WB sues over Indian 'Hari Puttar' movie

Posted By Matthew on 08-28-08 @ 1:20 AM - 42 comments | Link
Warner Bros. has sued the Indian studio behind a new movie called Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terrors, charging that the title bears too close of a resemblance to the Harry Potter movies. The film, which is slated to hit theatres September 12, centers around a 10 year-old Indian boy whose family moves to England.

WB spokeswoman Deborah Lincoln said, "We have recently commenced proceedings against parties involved in the production and distribution of a movie entitled 'Hari Puttar.' Warner Bros. values and protects intellectual property rights. However, it is our policy not to discuss publicly the details of any ongoing litigation."

EA working around difficult HBP ending

Jonathan Bunney, executive producer at Electronic Arts (the makers of the Harry Potter video games), spoke with MTV about how the company is working to include a distinctly un-fun ending to Half-Blood Prince in an engaging game for kids.

Without discussing the plot details of the end of the movie, as he is under contract not to discuss it (even though it has already been written and published by JK Rowling), Bunney said, "But I can tell you that you will not be...interacting.

“Whatever you’re alluding to, you won’t be doing that. Obviously, it’s a massive — I was so shocked when I read it. I put the book down and said, ‘That’s crazy! You can’t have done this.’ We’re dealing with it very sensitively because it’s a big deal, right? Obviously, we’re making a game that kids are going to be playing, as well.”

In response to the eight-month delay of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Sony Corp. has announced that it is pushing back the release of the new James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace -- but only by a week. The new release date for that film will now be Nov. 14 instead of Nov. 7, as the studio wanted to take advantage of the now less-crowded Thanksgiving weekend.

Dan talks 'Prince' in New York

Posted By Matthew on 08-20-08 @ 11:45 PM - 50 comments | Link
In a New York TimesTalk session tonight, Daniel Radcliffe spoke at length about his preparation for the upcoming Broadway production of Equus and also about the Half-Blood Prince movie. Thanks to SnitchSeeker, we have these nuggets from the interview:

- Dan said that, of the Half-Blood Prince move from November 2008 to July 2009, he was told about it 24 hours before the rest of the world, and begs everyone not to blame him for the move.

- About Half-Blood Prince, Dan says that the parts with Dumbledore and Voldemort are the darkest, while the scenes with Ron are the funniest yet; he also mentions that Jessie Cave (Lavender Brown) was really great to work with.

- Dan talked about a particular incident on the Half-Blood Prince set, where Rupert had his first kiss with Jessie, and Dan was in the background of the scene laughing and trying to get Rupert to break out from character and laugh as well.

- Dan addressed how Emma Watson was hesitant about signing up for the final films, and her reason for doing so was not because she did not want to, but because of her education and the need to evaluate what her options were, especially since the last Harry Potter films would require another three years of their lives. Emma chose not to rush into the decision, but her reason was not because she did not want to.

WB responds to fan concerns about HBP

Alan Horn, the Warner Bros. Chief Operating Officer, has released the following statement regarding the 8-month delay in the release of Half-Blood Prince to Harry Potter fansites:
Many of you have written to me to express your disappointment in our moving "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" to Summer 2009. Please be assured that we share your love for Harry Potter and would certainly never do anything to hurt any of the films. Over the past 10 years, we have nurtured and protected each film, and the integrity of the books upon which they are based, to the best of our ability. The decision to move "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" was not taken lightly, and was never intended to upset our Harry Potter fans. We know you have built this series into what it is, and we thank you for your ongoing enthusiasm and support. If I may offer a silver lining: there would have been a two-year gap between "Half-Blood Prince" and the much-anticipated first part of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," which opens in November 2010. So although we have to wait a little longer for "Half-Blood Prince," the wait from that film until "Deathly Hallows" will be less than 18 months. I am sorry to have disappointed you now, but if you hold on a little longer, I believe it will be worth the wait.
The countdown is now 331 days.

Dan says he suffers from brain disorder

Posted By Matthew on 08-18-08 @ 7:27 PM - 44 comments | Link
In another entry to the department of Harry Potter headlines that are causing double takes, Daniel Radcliffe told the Daily Mail in an interview this weekend that he suffers from a mild form of a brain disorder called dyspraxia, which is associated with clumsiness. Apparently, the diagnosis is not new, and in fact, Dan has been aware of the problem for some time.

His spokeswoman said, “Yes, Dan Radcliffe does have dyspraxia. This is something he has never hidden. Thankfully, his condition is very mild and at worst manifests itself in an inability to ties his shoe laces and bad handwriting.”

The Mail also quoted a dyspraxia expert, NYU Medical School’s Dr. David Younger, who said, “I’m a big fan of the whole Harry Potter series and I am surprised Daniel Radcliffe suffers from dyspraxia. He clearly suffers from a mild form, but the fact he shows no sign of it at all is a great tribute to his acting skills and makes him a role model for other people with this condition.

“In the majority of children and young people with dyspraxia, we cannot find the cause so the basic treatment is occupational therapy – teaching them to make a plan for their actions and rehearse their movements.”

Breaking: HBP release moved to July 2009

Posted By Rodrigo on 08-14-08 @ 3:58 PM - 209 comments | Link
Warner Bros. has announced that the release date of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has been moved to next summer from its original date of November 21. HBP will now open in theatres (both domestically and internationally) on July 17, 2009.

Alarn Horn, President and Chief Operating Officer of Warner Bros., said:
Our reasons for shifting 'Half-Blood Prince' to summer are twofold: we know the summer season is an ideal window for a family tent pole release, as proven by the success of our last Harry Potter film, which is the second-highest grossing film in the franchise, behind only the first installment. Additionally, like every other studio, we are still feeling the repercussions of the writers' strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films--changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of. We agreed the best strategy was to move 'Half-Blood Prince' to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent pole release for mid-summer.
Update: Sadly, this is not an April Fools' joke. We are stunned as well!

New HBP video game trailer and review

Posted By Rodrigo on 08-14-08 @ 3:08 PM - 11 comments | Link
IGN has published a new trailer for the Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince video game for Nintendo Wii.

They have also written a review for the game and reports the game environments have been improved in comparison to the previous ones.
Last year Potter heads were able to explore a 3D rendering of Hogwarts. But since players couldn't control the camera, the environments were essentially set pieces that didn't even have ceilings. The camera can now be adjusted by holding down the B button and pointing where you want to look. Players will be able to see more of the school than they ever have before. Once again, the game environments are presented just as they are in the movie.

A review for the Nintendo DS is available too.

"Fine, I'll try and teach him again!" Snape snarled at Professor Dumbledore.

"Severus, please, for me, don't take all those old wounds that you gained from James out on Harry. Harry is not James - do not blame him for what happened." Dumbledore spoke quietly, but his blue eyes held a warning. Snape sighed in frustration...
