Małe, niezależne księgarnie już od lat narzekają, że ogromna popularność książek HP działa na ich szkodę, ponieważ duże sieci sklepów są w stanie dać większe zniżki. Teraz jednak sieć księgarń Barnes & Noble również zaczęła się martwić zniżkami na książki HP:
Kiedy "Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows" autorstwa J.K. Rowling pójdzie na sprzedaż 21 lipca, Barnes & Noble planuje sprzedawać je po bardzo obniżonych cenach.
Chodzi o to, że jeśli rozreklamuje się taką książkę jak HP, ludzie ustawią się po nią w kolejkach pierwszego dnia i w rezultacie kupią w sklepie dużo więcej. Ale Barnes & Noble uważa, że całkowity zysk wyniesie zaledwie pomiędzy 4,6 a 4,7 miliarda dolarów w 2007, czyli od 2 do 4 procent więcej niż w roku 2006. Sprzedaż w sklepach otwartych ponad rok nie zmieni się lub w najlepszym wypadku będzie niewiele lepsza niż rok wcześniej.
