Prisoner of Azkaban Summary:
Chapter 10: The Marauder's Map

Harry is getting worried because he has seen the big black dog, the Grim, twice now, and both times he has nearly died right afterwards. He has also realized that the screaming voice in his head was his mother, begging Voldemort not to kill him.

In Defense Against the Dark Arts the next day, Lupin has finally returned, looking very ill. He tells the class that they don't have to do the essay on werewolves, much to Hermione's dismay, as she has already finished it. After class, Lupin calls Harry back, saying he is sorry about what happened to him on the weekend. The Whomping Willow was planted the year he came to Hogwarts, and they had been forbidden to go near it. He also tells Harry that the Dementors affect him so much because of the horrible things in Harry's past. Dementors feed off of happy memories, and only leave the worst ones. Lupin says Harry's worst memories would make anyone fall off a broom. Harry reveals to Lupin that he can hear his mother being murdered when the Dementors come near, and then Lupin promises to teach Harry a way of fighting the Dementors, should he ever encounter them again.

Ron and Hermione decide to stay at Hogwarts for Christmas to keep Harry company. The day before holidays start, there is another Hogsmeade trip. Again, Harry is disappointed because he won't be allowed to go. Then Fred and George pull him aside and give him a strange piece of parchment, claiming that it is the secret to their success. They stole it from a drawer labeled "Confiscated and Highly Dangerous" in Filch's office during their first year. When one taps the parchment and says, "I solemnly swear I am up to no good," a map of the school appears, showing all the secret passages. The map has little moving dots indicating each person in the castle's location. It was created by Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs. Several of the passages lead straight into Hogsmeade. Taking the opportunity, Harry uses a secret passage through a statue of a one-eyed witch, through a long tunnel, and right into Honeydukes. He sneaks into the store and meets up with Ron and Hermione. Both of them are amazed at the Marauder's Map; Ron because Fred and George had never mentioned it, and Hermione because they might be able to catch Sirius Black by guarding the other passages. Ron assures them no one would break into Hogsmeade while being guarded by the Dementors. They decide to go to the Three Broomsticks, and they sit at a table between a window and a Christmas tree drinking Butterbeer. Unfortunately, Professors McGonagall and Flitwick, as well as Hagrid and Cornelius Fudge come into the pub, and sit on the other side of the Christmas tree. Ron and Hermione force Harry under the table and out of sight.

The trio overhears their teachers talking to Madam Rosmerta about the Dementors and about Sirius Black. Madam Rosmerta knew Sirius, and has difficulty believing he could go to the dark side. She fondly remembers when Sirius and his best friend, James Potter, came into the pub on Hogsmeade trips and made her laugh. Apparently, Sirius and James were inseparable, like brothers, and Sirius is Harry's godfather. Fudge also reveals that when Lily and James went into hiding, they named Sirius their secret keeper, under the Fidelius Charm. The Fidelius Charm works by concealing a secret in the soul of a living person, and the secret keeper is the only one who can reveal it to anyone. Dumbledore offered to be secret keeper, but the Potters insisted that they could trust Black with it. Then, Sirius betrayed them and used the opportunity to tell Voldemort the Potter's whereabouts. When Harry caused Voldemort's downfall, Sirius was in a very bad position, since his master had fallen just when he had revealed himself to be a traitor.

Sirius came to the Potter's house after the attack and met with Hagrid there. Sirius was very upset and offered to take Harry, but Hagrid refused as he had orders from Dumbledore to take him to the Dursleys. Then Black made a run for it and met up with Peter Pettigrew. Pettigrew had been a friend from school, who had worshiped James and Sirius but never had their talent. Sirius then blew up the entire street, killing Pettigrew and twelve muggles. All that was left of Pettigrew was one of his fingers. Black was found there right after by the Ministry, and was laughing. He has been in Azkaban ever since. Fudge reveals that he met Black on his last inspection and noticed that he hadn't gone mad; he even asked if Fudge was done with the newspaper so that he could do the crossword. Harry is in shock at all of this news.
