Prisoner of Azkaban Summary: Chapter 14: Snape's Grudge
After that, the castle is searched again, but again Black is not found. Sir Cadogan is sacked and the Fat Lady is brought back. Extra security measures are all over the castle, including security trolls at the Gryffindor Tower entrance. Ron is in instant celebrity, as all the other students want to know what happened with Sirius Black. The one thing Harry and Ron can't figure out is why Sirius ran when Ron woke up, since Sirius had already proven he didn't mind killing innocent people. Neville is disgraced, and as punishment he is banned from all Hogsmeade trips, has detention, and is not allowed to know the password to Gryffindor Tower. Worst of all, a few days after the break-in, Neville gets a Howler from his grandmother, which screams how he has shamed his entire family by his stupidity.
That afternoon, Ron and Harry go to visit Hagrid. They both feel very guilty, because in all the excitement they have forgotten to help him prepare for Buckbeak's trial, which is only two days away. However, what Hagrid really wants to talk to them about is Hermione. She has visited Hagrid a lot lately because she is lonely. She has bitten off more than she can chew with schoolwork and is miserable because Harry and Ron aren't talking to her because of the Firebolt and Scabbers. Hagrid thinks that they should value their friend more than rats or broomsticks.
A notice is posted for a Hogsmeade trip the following weekend. Harry figures it is safe to go, since no one knows about the secret passage yet. Hermione threatens to tell McGonagall if he goes, so Harry decides to take the invisibility cloak. After getting rid of Neville and Snape, Harry hurries down the passage to Honeydukes. They walk around Hogsmeade, looking at owls and buying sweets until they run into Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle near the Shrieking Shack. Harry, being under the invisibility cloak, uses the opportunity to throw mud at Malfoy and have him believe it is ghosts. Unfortunately, during the mud-fight, Crabbe steps on the hem of Harry's cloak and pulls it off his head. Upon seeing Harry's head floating in midair, Malfoy screams and runs off. Harry hurries back to the castle as fast as he can, so he can pretend he had been there all afternoon.
Snape catches Harry as soon as he gets out of the tunnel, and drags him to his office. Harry tries to play innocent, stating that Malfoy must have lost his mind. Snape goes on to say that Harry is just like his father, strutting around Hogwarts as if he is above the rules and says how swollen his father's head was. Harry yells at Snape to shut up about his father, saying he knows Snape hates James because he saved his life. Snape tells Harry that James played a trick on Snape, which would have resulted in Snape's death and James's expulsion if he had gone through with it, but James chickened out at the last moment to save his own skin. Snape then orders Harry to turn out his pockets, and Harry produces a bag of Zonko's jokes, as well as the Marauders Map, claiming that Ron brought them back for him from Hogsmeade last time. Snape uses a spell on the map to make it reveal its contents, and words pour across the page from Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs, insulting Snape. Harry simply stares, horrified, at the paper. Snape, who is furious, throws a handful of Floo Powder into the fire and calls Lupin. Lupin looks at the map and does some quick thinking. He says it appears to be a joke product, perhaps from Zonkos and that it isn't dangerous. Snape asks if Harry had gotten the map directly from the manufacturers, but Harry insists that he doesn't know any of the Messrs. Ron then bursts in, saying he had gave the Zonkos stuff to Harry ages ago. Lupin considers the matter settled and hurries Harry and Ron out before Snape can do anything. Outside, Lupin is very angry with them for not handing in the map and will not let Harry have it back. Both Harry and Ron are surprised that Lupin knows it is a map. Harry asks why Snape thought he had gotten it from the Messrs, and Lupin says he has met them, and that they would have think it entertaining to lure students out of the castle. Lupin also tells Harry to take Sirius Black more seriously and not to gamble his parents' sacrifice for a trip to Hogsmeade.
