Harry Potter Book 7
Release Date: TBA
One of the questions we are asked most frequently is when the seventh and final Harry Potter book will hit stores. As of now, no date is set for its release, but our best guess is the summer of 2007, based on comments made by JK Rowling and Bloomsbury.
When Jo was asked when the seventh book would come out at the Half-Blood Prince cub reporter press conference in July 2005, she said, "I am going to say now I think it will be at least another two year wait. Sorry, I think it probably will be just being realistic. My plan is to start writing seriously at the end of the year because I still have a very young baby, although I am doing some work on it at the moment."
In an update to her official website on December 25, 2005, she wrote, "2006 will be the year when I write the final book in the Harry Potter series," leading most to believe that that task will only take one year to complete. Later updates to her site in the early months of 2006 told of great progress on the seventh book, and although she wrote on February 28, 2006 that the book was growing considerably longer than she originally anticipated, she was still experiencing "floods of inspiration" as she wrote.
Reuters caught up with Jo at the Queen's 80th birthday party at Buckingham Palace on June 25, 2006, and she told them she's "doing well" on the seventh book. "You can never really tell till you get near the end. I am not quite there yet." A week later, Reuters published an article in which they mentioned that the seventh book will be released next year, but they did not quote Rowling or cite any other sources.
Jo hasn't been the only source of good news regarding the book 7 release. In May 2006, Bloomsbury Publishing Director Liz Calder told several Indian publications that "[t]he next 'Harry Potter' book is likely to come out in 2007," but she also said that no date (or year, for that matter) has been decided on yet.
On the whole, fans are confident that the yet-to-be-named seventh Harry Potter book will come out in 2007. In a recent poll on Veritaserum, a whopping 90% of voters said they expect to see the book on shelves next summer rather than in 2008.
The main complicating factor in the release of the seventh book, however, is the fifth movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which will come out on Friday, July 13, 2007. Many fans were hoping for a July 7, 2007 (07/07/07) release of the seventh book, but that seems highly unlikely now, as neither Warner Bros. nor Scholastic would want to steal the other's thunder. June and August remain possibilities if the book will indeed be released next year, but there is always that chance that either Scholastic will not want to release it in the same summer as the fifth movie (which will undoubtedly be filled with movie promotions, press junkets, and premieres) or that JK Rowling will want to spend a bit more time writing and editing, in which case it may not come out until 2008.
