Harry Related to Gryffindor?

by Ashby
June 05, 2004

I seem to read the second Harry Potter book the most; it seems to be all I read nowadays. I read it again just the other day and I realized that something about Godric Gryffindor is very interesting. He seems to hold the same traits and qualities that are shown in Harry. I looked around more for evidence and I gather the facts. It turns out that Harry Potter seems to be the last remaining descendant of Gryffindor.

I obviously believe that it is on Harry's father's side. Because his mother has muggle parentage most likely means that Harry has none of Gryffindor's blood that comes from her. We know nothing of Harry's father's side of the family so that greatly reduces all chances of us knowing for sure.

Harry shows a lot of traits that Gryffindor himself has. Gryffindor says that he only wants the loyal and brave wizards for his own House. Harry seems to be very brave and loyal. Harry will die trying to save his friends as we have seen on countless occasions, and there is no one braver than Harry Potter. If Gryffindor only wanted the brave and loyal for his house then that may mean that he has those traits himself. If he does contain those traits then Harry Potter may have inherited them.

There seems to be more proof of him being related then you think. It was mentioned in the later part of the series that the Sorting Hat had actually belonged to Godric Gryffindor himself. In the second book, Harry went down into the chamber of secrets and Fawkes gave Harry the hat down there. It just so happens that Harry Potter had pulled out a sword which he used in order to beat the greatest beast of all time: the basilisk. Harry not only showed true bravery down there but we find out that Harry had pulled out Gryffindor's sword. Harry pulled Gryffindor's sword out of Gryffindor's hat. Dumbledore himself said to Harry, "Only a true Gryffindor could have pulled that out of the hat". Whether Dumbledore was actually telling us all that he was related to Gryffindor or not, we will never know.

Another minor detail is that Harry's folks lived in a place called Godric's Hollow. The name is obviously the same as Gryffindor's first name and this may prove that the house his parents had lived in might have belonged to Gryffindor himself. J. K. Rowling does not put something like that down with out it not being a coincidence.

One question asked is that how could J. K. Rowling insert that kind of information in the books? I have no idea either but I am sure that JK does. It may be important for the series later on so it might be brought up that they are related. Some people say that might be too cheesy. I think it is brilliant. The heir of Gryffindor versus the heir of Slytherin in a final battle may sound cheesy to some people, but to others it may be one of the greatest moments in all of the Harry Potter books.

Why did the Sorting Hat say that Harry would do well in Slytherin? If he had Gryffindor blood then why was the Sorting Hat persuading Harry to go to Slytherin. Duh, this has obviously something to do with Voldemort transferring his powers to Harry the night his folks died. The Sorting hat must have seen the Slytherin part of Harry rather than the Gryffindor part.
