In this editorial, I want to talk about what I think will happen in future books based on clues and occurrences in the first five books, as well as with reference to classic story structures and reader expectations.
I believe that Dumbledore will die. I am almost 99% certain in my mind that by the end of the series, Dumbledore will have been murdered by Voldemort. It is likely that Harry will be unwilling to let the prophecy become true and he will not want to be murdered or become a murderer. To provoke Harry into pursuing his destiny and defeating Voldemort, Dumbledore must be killed. It is a tragic and upsetting scenario, and that is why it will be so potent in forcing Harry to accept his destiny. Throughout the first five books, Dumbledore has been Harry's wise, powerful, ever-present guardian. To take him away is essential in forcing Harry to stand alone, finally out of Dumbledore's protection. Dumbledore has so far assumed the role of the archetype wise old man (see Gandalf in LOTR) and Harry must lose him before he can win the battle. I think this will happen at either the very end of the 6th book or sometime in the 7th.
I think that Hermione and Ron will fall in love. This seems to be quite obvious, although JK does delight in subverting expectations, so she may go a totally different route. However, at some points her books seem to follow archetype, mythic structures and at others they seem to be purposely subverting such structures. In the case of Hermione and Ron's relationship, I think that JK Rowling will choose to please the fans, who are wildly in favour of a Hermione/Ron relationship, and make them get together. The first five books are littered with clues as to the direction of their relationship, the one that most sticks out in my mind is the scene in book five where Hermione looks at Ron the same way Mrs. Weasley looks at Mr. Weasley. I think that in the darkness that is sure to come in the next 2 books, the fairytale romance between Ron and Hermione should provide some happiness. But knowing their tendencies to fight all the time, maybe not...
I think there is still so much we don't know. The prophecy is meant to be the explanation for why Voldemort wanted to kill Harry. We had assumed that it was something to do with Harry's parents and family, but the prophecy proves that assumption wrong. However, the prophecy doesn't really explain that much. Why Harry? Why Voldemort? Is there some significance that links them together, or is it just chance, was Harry just randomly chosen by fate to be the only one with the power to defeat the Dark Lord? What about Lily Potter? JK Rowling has hinted that she has some significance in the plot that we have yet to discover. Speculation that she was once a Death Eater has flowed through fandom. Or could it be something to do with her eyes ... those green eyes that are exactly the same as Harry's? JK Rowling said in an interview with the BBC that she had written a whole history of the Death Eaters, who were called a different name when they were first established, many years ago ... before Voldemort. Will we ever find out anything about the original Death Eaters? Will Trelawney ever make another real prediction? And what about Wormtail? Dumbledore said that a special bond had been created between him and Harry. Undoubtedly, the consequences of this will be felt soon. Will Wormtail be unable to hurt Harry at Voldemort's command? Will this be a key in Harry's defeat of Voldemort? What about Nagini? The Dark Lord's serpent companion. Is she a young basilisk? Or some of magical snake? She must have some kind of part to play in future books, otherwise her menacing introduction in Goblet of Fire will be a pointless red herring.
In this column I have only scratched the surface of my predictions and thoughts for future books. I will probably write columns on this topic before the time comes when we devour the 6th book. |
