Potterphiles everywhere have been plagued by the endlessly annoying question: Who is the Half-Blood Prince? Truth be told, it's been analyzed so much that nobody wants to hear about it anymore. However, I really feel the need to put in my two cents on the issue. After all, when everybody thought the HBP was Tom Riddle, I knew it couldn't be... As usual, nobody listened. This time, I want my voice heard. I might be right about this, and, hey, it wouldn't be the first time (that sounds arrogant, yes... It's also true). Now, onto the issues! So, who is the HBP?
Look at the various Potterverse characters. It seems to me that a wizard or witch with mixed (both magic and muggle) parentage is actually more magically powerful than a witch or wizard with either pure muggle or pure wizard blood. For example, list the following characters in order of magical power:
1) Neville Longbottom
2) Lord Voldemort
3) Hermione Granger
If you're thinking like me, you would put them in the order of 2, 3, and then 1. Notice that the Half-Blood character is far more powerful than either the completely "pureblood" or the completely "mudblood" (I hate that word!) character. I hear you plead, "BUT WHAT ABOUT HAGRID?" He is a very different kind of Half-Blood. He is half HUMAN. Anyone who has studied chemistry will tell you that mixing chemicals A and B will not yield the same results and chemicals A and C. The effects of mixing giant blood with wizarding blood are most likely quite different than those of muggle blood and wizarding blood. Summing up, I strongly believe that the following equation correctly illustrates the balance of magical power:
1 Muggle Parent + 1 Wizarding Parent = 1 Seriously Strong Witch or Wizard (excluding squibs - those are rare, and we don't know what causes them)
This is why I think the Half Blood Prince is Albus Dumbledore. Who do we know that's more powerful than he is?
Besides...Isn't it rather suspicious that we know so little about Dumbledore? Being such a central character, one would think we'd have endless amounts of information on Dumbledore's past. However, that is clearly not the case. Why? I think Jo Rowling tells us nothing about Dumbledore's heritage for a reason. She's concealing the identity of the Half-Blood Prince! Both Harry and Tom Riddle are stated to be half bloods. Wouldn't it make sense that the third member of the so-called "trinity of power" would be half-blood as well? There is so much about Dumbledore that has yet to be explained (like that "glint of triumph" at the end of GoF that everybody was talking about before OotP was released). Jo Rowling likes keeping important characters a mystery. Look, once again, at the various Potterverse characters. It seems to me that the more central the character, the less we seem to know about his/her past. |
