Another Look at the HBP

by Lindsay
August 18, 2004

Most of the new theories floating around focus on one thing, the Half Blood Prince. Questions such as "who is he" and "what is his importance" continue back and forth in discussion rooms and in editorials across the web. Is he a prince who's a half blood? Or, is he the prince of half bloods? The theory I now present to you, is certainly...plausible, though hard to believe. So please, as unlikely as it may sound, read it through and give it your attention and consideration.

There are more than 50 (I read 81 in one editorial) male characters that we've met in the past 5 books and it is just as likely that the HBP is one of these characters as it is a new character. Personally, I believe that JKR isn't going to throw any new major characters into the mix so close to the ending of her series. Many people got worked up about Mark Evans being a potential new character and it turned out that he will have no importance other than being a filler character. There are only two books left and enough mysteries already from the first five books to fill both of them. This makes me lean towards one of our already known characters as the HBP.

If you read any baby name books (or just the list of names on this site), you see that Arthur may refer to KING Arthur and his knights of the round table (the OoTP maybe?). If this reference was JKRs intention, then wouldn't Ron be the prince?

Think of Arthur's LOVE for muggles and muggle-made inventions. Think of how he is constantly in defense of muggles and muggle-born witches and wizards (or to all you Slytherins, "mudbloods"). Could the HBP mean the "Prince of Half-Bloods" rather than a "Prince who IS a half blood"? I feel this is entirely possible. Isn't is Arthur who tells Harry about Sirius in the POA? Isn't he trying to protect Harry? This is what Kings do; they protect their people. If Arthur is the "King of half bloods" and Harry IS a half blood, then Arthur is constantly fulfilling his role as the "King of half bloods." Arthur's enrollment in the OoTP suggests this as well.

I know what you're thinking, "if this is true then all the Weasley sons are princes, right?" Yes, that's very true. But Charlie's thing is Dragons, Percy is a git, the Twins are inventors, and Bill works for Gringots... to me, Ron shows the most interest in muggle-made things such as the car (he's the one who's driving it to Hogwarts). He also is very helpful in protecting Harry. In the SS/PS Ron is the one who plays a Knight (one of King Arthur's knights of the round table?) and helps Harry get through the game of Wizards Chess.

Also, Arthur is Sirius' second cousin once removed. Remember Sirius' line about his family thinking that being a Black made you practically royal? It didn't say it MADE them royal! If Arthur is Sirius' second cousin once removed then Ron is Sirius' second cousin. This means that Ron and Sirius had a common great-grandparent! If this great-grandparent were a Weasley king and had two children, the older Weasley would have become king. If that older Weasleys son was Arthur, then Arthur would be King. Follow the chart...

If Mrs. Black feels that the Weasleys are blood traitors, maybe it is because the royal bloodline passed to Arthur's side of the family rather than her own. Maybe she feels that SHE is the rightful queen and is jealous of Arthur. This would validate the Black family's hatred of the Weasleys despite their relation.

Also, I feel JKR gave us a hint with the "Weasley is our King" chant! It didn't say "Ron Weasley is our King" is said "Weasley." Feel free to contact me with your opinions on this theory!
