Sirius's Mirror

by Jen
June 10, 2005

"I want you to take this," he said quietly, thrusting a badly wrapped package roughly the size of a paperback book into Harry's hands. "A way of letting me know if Snape's giving you a hard time." Harry stowed the package away in the inside of his jacket, but he knew he would not use whatever it was.

We all remember the day Sirius gave Harry a small, square mirror. Harry was readying himself to exit the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix, when Sirius pulled out James' old school tool. Sirius explains to Harry that back when he attended Hogwarts, Sirius and James used these two mirrors to communicate, and now, would like Harry to use his if Snape acts of line.

Ever since we discovered Sirius was Harry's godfather in the Prisoner of Azkaban, we began to notice that Snuffles has a thing for bestowing gifts upon his grandson, gifts that I believe have been vital to the Harry Potter plot. Some of the items that Harry has received from Sirius are:

1. The Firebolt
2. A Knife
3. A Mirror

All but one of these items has demonstrated their usefulness throughout the series. The Firebolt, for instance, was Harry's replacement broom. Harry's Nimbus 2000 had been utterly destroyed by the Whomping Willow, and the Firebolt allowed Harry to play Quidditch again. Not to mention that it most definitely solidified Sirius and Harry's relationship. The knife has served an even greater purpose. Although one could argue that the knife got Harry and his friends into a spot of trouble every now and then, we can also state that the knife has allowed Harry to gain access to the deeper chambers of the Department of Mysteries, where Harry technically saved his prophecy from Voldemort. Sirius has never presented his godson with a useless present.

And now, onto the one object that has not yet taken a great toll on the plot, the mirror. Near the end of the fifth book, Harry is distraught about Sirius' death, and tries numerous ways to communicate with him once again. He tries talking to Nearly Headless Nick to see if Sirius will become a ghost, and even screams Sirius' name into the mirror. Sirius unfortunately never returns the call. When Sirius does not respond, Harry decides that Sirius cannot communicate with him because Sirius did not have the mirror when he fell through the veil.

Sirius didn't have his mirror on him when he went through the archway, said a small voice in Harry's head. That's why it's not working!

After J.K. Rowling led us to believe that the mirror of communication is useless, I immediately became suspicious. I, for one, find it hard to understand why Rowling would introduce such a powerful object during the middle of the book, and then never allow it to be used again. It just doesn't make any sense. Did our favorite author present the object for additional irony? I think this is very unlikely.

I have put together a short list of how the mirror could appear in Half Blood Prince, or very possibly in the seventh book:

1. Harry could retrieve both mirrors, and give one to Ron, Hermione, or another character to communicate with in times of need.
2. Kreacher could have found the mirror in the house of Black, allowing Bellatrix or even Voldemort to watch Harry's actions.
3. The mirror may have a function other than communication, which Harry may activate in the future.
4. Sirius may not have been able to respond to the call because he was still "crossing over."

Either way, Sirius's mirror will be back.
