Ginny Weasley: The Key to the Ancient Magic

by Heidi Kneazle
June 21, 2005

Ginny Weasley may hold the key to the Ancient Magic, the same magic that Lily Potter used to protect Harry, and her potential for this magic will be instrumental in the final battle between Harry and Voldemort.

So, what is the Ancient Magic? Nobody's quite sure. One theory about the "Ancient Magic" is that the key is pure love. Lily loved Harry more than anyone else (possibly more than she loved James), thus making her protection spell stronger than even Avada Kedavra. If Ginny loves Harry more than anyone else, that love may be enough to trigger the Ancient Magic that may save Harry in the final battle.

Voldemort lacks the Ancient Magic. Voldemort fears it. He may have gotten past the protection that prevented him from touching Harry in Goblet of Fire, but there may be more to the Ancient Magic than blood, especially if love is the key to making the Ancient Magic work. Ginny, who loves Harry, may be the one to trigger it and thus defeat Voldemort.

Ginny loves Harry, even though he does not take her affection seriously. He doesn't even consider her for the Yule Ball and that stings. If it was just a puppy crush, she would have gotten over it soon enough, but she doesn't. She goes out with the first guy who asks her--Neville, then later hooks up with Michael Corner, when "'They met at the Yule Ball and got together at the end of last year,' said Hermione....". (Order of the Phoenix, p 310 Bloomsbury hb ed.) This, surprises Ron. "'I thought Ginny fancied Harry!'" But Hermione explains, "'Ginny used to fancy Harry, but she gave up on him months ago. Not that she doesn't like you, of course,' she added kindly to Harry...." (ibid, p 311) While his ignorant snubs break her heart and she tries to pretend that she's "given up" on Harry--even going so far as to tell Hermione so--it does not quench the fire of her love. This is a sign of true love and not just a puppy crush. She continues to love Harry, even after she realizes just how human he is.

Ron realizes her love for Harry too, even if only on a subconscious level, and wholeheartedly endorses it. When, on the Express back from Hogwarts he learns from Harry and Ginny that Cho Chang is now going out with Michael Corner, he is surprised. "'But I thought you were going out with him!' 'Not any more,' said Ginny resolutely." (ibid, p 736) Her reasons for dumping him were really shallow--a sign she was not truly interested in him. Ron replies, "'Good for you. Just choose someone--better--next time.' He cast Harry an oddly furtive look as he said it." (ibid, p 736)

Harry's not completely ignorant of Ginny's affection--just mostly ignorant. When Harry received a singing Valentine in his second year, he feels, "Hot all over at the thought of being given a Valentine in front of a queue of first years, which happened to include Ginny Weasley...." (Chamber of Secrets, p 177 Bloomsbury pb ed. 25) He wouldn't have noticed her if she hadn't already been in his thoughts as a romantic interest. Despite everyone's belief that Ginny sent the Valentine, she did not. Consider the last two lines of the Valentine: "I wish he was mine, he's really divine, The hero who conquered the Dark Lord." (ibid p 178) Ginny would never have used the words "Dark Lord" to describe Lord Voldemort. That is a name used by a Death Eater (or a Death Eater wannabe).

So, who sent the Valentine? A Malfoy.

Both Lucius and Draco know about Ginny's connection to Harry. Draco gives himself away when, "....he yelled spitefully after her, 'I don't think Pottter liked your Valentine much!'" Whereas poor Ginny "covered her face with her hands and ran into class." (ibid p178)

Lucius Malfoy knows things about Ginny, things we the readers don't know yet. This knowledge led him to choose Ginny to receive Tom Riddle's diary.

Why her? It wasn't just that she was a convenient person to give the diary to. If all he wanted to do was get the diary into any old student's hands at Hogwarts, he could have made Draco take it and deliver it to a convenient student or easily delivered it into the hands of some other student whose parents were bribed, blinded or bullied by Lucius Malfoy.

No, he wanted to be absolutely sure that Ginny Weasley--and no other--had Tom Riddle's diary. In Flourish and Botts during Ginny's first year, he saw his opportunity to deliver it to her. He waits until the Weasleys show up, and then deliberately picks a fight with Arthur. Despite being tossed around the bookshop, he hangs onto Ginny's transfiguration book, when most men would have dropped the book to free up a hand for fighting. After the fight he even hands her book back to her--an uncharacteristic act of "kindness" from one who wouldn't care otherwise. "'Here, girl--take your book...." (ibid p 51) Why did he take such great care to make sure that Ginny got her book back? So that she--and nobody else--got the diary tucked inside. (After all, Ron had thrown his books in her cauldron as well.)

Lucius knew that whoever had the diary was going to become the victim of Tom Riddle. So why Ginny? Some possible reasons for this are: she's a pureblood (but so is Neville), she's (the daughter of) an enemy (as is Neville), she's got a close tie to Harry (as Neville does, though not in the same way!) but unlike Neville, she is the one to be the key for Harry for the Ancient Magic.

Lucius Malfoy may realize this. He may also know that Voldemort lacks this Ancient Magic, but magical abilities can be transferred. Harry, thanks to the connection forged between Voldemort and himself as a baby, possesses some of Voldemort's talents like Parseltongue and a few others that may be revealed to us in the future. It works both ways. Voldemort, thirteen years later, was able to capture Harry Potter for a very important incantation: "'I wanted Harry Potter's blood. I wanted the blood of the one who had stripped me of power thirteen years ago, for the lingering protection his mother once gave him, would then reside in my veins, too...'" (Goblet of Fire, p 570, Bloomsbury ed. 3). So why didn't he try earlier? Because Harry's protection was too strong and he was too weak.

But what if he could get that Ancient Magic from another and imbue it into a body that wasn't near death? Enter the magical memory of Tom Riddle and the perfect victim: Ginny Weasley.

It's possible that someone (Voldemort or Lucius) figured out what originally protected Harry from the Avada Kedavra curse and also figured out that the best way to deliver that ancient magic to Tom Riddle would be by making Ginny a sacrifice, thus both bringing Tom Riddle to life, but also gifting him with the Ancient Magic. Thanks to Harry, he failed.

Dumbledore has hinted several times that as the Ancient Magic was once the key to defeating Voldemort, it may be the key to defeating him again. Lily Potter may be dead, but that doesn't mean that he cannot be loved by another.
