In Essence Divided: We Already Have the Third Horcrux

by M. Regina
August 21, 2005

Spoiler Warning: This editorial is riddled with major plot details from the sixth book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - read at your own risk!

"I have been hoping for this piece of evidence for a very long time," said Dumbledore at last. "It confirms the theory on which I have been working, it tells me that I am right, and also how very far there is still to go…." - page 449 of HBP (American version)

… How very far indeed.

We know for a fact that the principle of immortality has always fascinated and consumed Lord Voldemort. After reading the Horcrux chapter, I too, was intrigued, however not with the Dark Lord's ambitions, but with the idea soul splitting. It is ideally the perfect weapon, or rather, was. Though now, after gaining this knowledge, we ultimately know how to bring Voldemort down. Well yes, ha. Easier said then done.

"He made seven Horcruxes?" said Harry, horror-struck, while several of the portraits on the walls made similar noises of shock and outrage. "But they could be anywhere in the world – hidden – buried or invisible--" - page 503 of HBP (American version)

Not only must Harry and Company find the Horcruxes, but we mustn't forget that the curses surrounding and protecting them don't prove to be a walk in the park. For instance, when Harry and Dumbledore arrived at the cave (and when Dumbledore went to find the ring), Dumbledore could see traces of magical concealment. At the cave, he even knew that blood had to be sacrificed upon entrance. We all remembered Harry's reaction:

"Here," [Dumbledore] said. "We go on through here. The entrance is concealed."

Harry did not ask how Dumbledore knew. He has never seen a wizard work things out like this, simply by looking or touching; but Harry had long since learned that bangs and smoke were more often the marks of ineptitude than expertise."

[Page 558 of HBP (American version)]

So yes. We know it won't be easy (to say the least). And, with four reaming Horcruxes, like Harry said, they could be anywhere and could be anything. Dumbledore and Harry, though, assume with confidence, that two of the four remaining Horcruxes are Hufflepuff's cup and Slytherin's locket. I personally was devastated to learn that the Slytherin's locket was a fake. We were, however, given a huge clue as to the whereabouts of the real locket Horcrux: R.A.B., Regulus Black.

Now onward to the real point of this editorial. For me, it is tradition to read the series before receiving the latest installment. This year, though, time was hard to find, so I ended up reading the series after HBP. One, two, three, four five, six. Wait, stop! Let's go back to five.

After reading Order of the Phoenix with the clues I now had from book six, I believe we only have three Horcruxes remaining, because the locket is, in fact, in Harry's possession. We see the third Horcrux, the real locket, while they are cleaning at Grimmauld Place, the home of Regulus Black:

"There was a musical box that emitted a faintly sinister, twinkling tune when wound, and they all found themselves becoming curiously weak and sleepy until Ginny had the sense to slam the lid shut; also a heavy locket that none of them could open, a number of ancient seals, in a dusty box." - page 116 of Ootp (American version)

See! That kind of jumped up and bit me on the nose while reading. And after reading this, it does seem to confirm R.A.B is Regulus, and that that particular locket, is, in fact, the third Horcrux. Thus it is logical and completely valid to say that this locket is the third Horcrux, and that R.A.B is Regulus Black.
