I had insomnia once,I was really stressed out....
Eventually I went to the doctor and he told me there are lots of factors that cause it; i.e.: eating late at night, hunger, alcohol, caffeine, nicotine...
There are also some physical health problems such as sleep apnoea ( is when you breathe abnormally while asleeping)
There are many things-according to what he told me-you could try before taking any medicines:
- Avoid taking cat-naps during the day.
- Reduce the number of cups of coffee, etc especially later on in the day.
- Take regular exercise, but avoid strenuous activity immediately before going to bed.
- Try to get into a daily routine. Go to bed the same time each night and get up the same time each morning...if your time schedule lets you
- Avoid heavy or rich meals, especially in the few hours before bedtime.
- Becoming unnecessarily stressed over insomnia can lead to a vicious cycle.
- If you can't still sleep , get up and read in a dim light until you feel sleepy. Don't watch television or lie in bed thinking about how much sleep you are missing.... (although sometimes I find that television bears me to sleep

)
- Other activities that can create a relaxed mood include taking a warm bath, having a milky drink, or listening to soothing music.
- Mentally dealing with the day's unfinished business is also helpful. Writing down any worries to deal with the next day may help to clear them from the mind and prevent them re-surfacing in the early hours.
Well, that kind of helped me in some sort of way (my insomnia problem was not only caused by stress, so I ended up taking some pills)
Anyways, I hope I've been of help
