Hello everyone!

First off, I want to apologize for being well, invisible. It's been a really trying couple of weeks, but hopefully things will settle down soon.

Jana's debate question really seemed to spark some conversation which is wonderful! It certainly is a wonderful topic that I will try to reach in my post, but I have a feeling that I may have to prioritize and catch some sleep soon (it is 12:30 a.m. afterall tongue.gif).

I would like to welcome Moonlight, our newest member!

I would also like to thank each and every one of the SOSS members for making Snapeweek successful with your intriguing posts! I for one had a blast reading everyone's wonderful letters and looking at drawings. I hope that everyone enjoyed Snapeweek, and it won't be too long until Rickmania Week will be upon us (time sure does fly!).

I apologize once again for my absence, but I promise that within a couple of days, I will catch up with the latest questions! Keep it up!

Ashley

Has anyone seen the trailer to Bottle Shock?

I think it looks very funny...well Alans role does anyway.

I just love the line...'Your a snob'...and he says...'Am I?'...and 'Why don't I like you'?...'Because you think I'm an {Swearword} and I'm not really, I'm British and well....you're not'!

Brilliant!

Did anyone ever watch Nobel Son? I must have blinked!

Oh, thanks for the link, Elaine! Two big obsessions of mine (wine and Alan) united in one movie? What a treat. tongue.gif

And you are right, the "British" line is hilarious. He can say such a thing in a tone that is so fitting and just saying everything implicitly.

And on a different note now. Never worry, Ashley, about being invisible for some time. We all know that you’re a wonderful president and Snapeweek was the fun it was only because of the fabulous challenges you'd come up with. So, don’t worry. wink.gif

I have seen the Bottle Shock trailer and to tell you the truth I am not very excited seeing Alan with that mustache.LOL.I think it hides too much of that beautiful face of his and his yummy lips.LOL,sorry about that!Anyway,I would still not miss seeing the movie just to hear that lovely deep voice of his.

It's funny how Bottle Shock seems not to appeal to that many poeple, yet I adore that type of movie. Janet said something about there being A Walk in the Clouds about wine. But Janet, how can you compare, Alan Rickman and Keanu Reaves, let alone force me to put both names inthe same sentence!

Personally, I don't watch Alans movies for his lips or anything that may be covering them, I'm more into that with his recent co-star...Mr Depp **swoon** haha. So any movie with AR being funny whether it be about wine, vinegar fuzzy top lip or full facial hair doesn't bother me...I'm in it for the superb acting....and ofcourse as you say Trish, that smooth as silk voice.

Ashley, you have a lot on your plate and anything you do is greatly appreciated. You do what you can when you can.

I recently got the chance to watch Alan Rickman on Sweeney Todd, playing the judge who stole the wife and falsely sentenced the husband to prison. He was so good and not to mention his voice, oh never mind the blood, but he was really good with his performance and a bonus, because you can hear him sing, that voice is enough for any Rickman fans to watch.

Hello guys! smile.gif

First, welcome to SOSS, Trish_Rickman! And a good idea to start a little bit of a movie and Alan-Rickman-as-an-actor discussion.

I agree with Elaine here, that no matter what Mr. Rickman has on his face, it does not affect his acting in the least. First I must say that I really do love the way he acts (to say nothing of the voice of his, but that’s been already mentioned by the others). Now, I definitely don’t want to sound blasphemous, but is it only me or are Alan’s performances (in movies, as I’m not familiar with his stage acting) somehow resembling each other more and more? I cannot shake off the feeling that he is just the same in each and every one of his recent movies. Please, don’t throw anything at me, and if you do, at least grab something soft. *covers her head*

I wanted to answer my own Severus related question from a while ago, but I’ll wait for the blows to come and I will proceed only after I recover from them.

And oh, all of you are talking about Sweeney Todd. I just can’t wait to see it! It will only open on February, 7, here. sad.gif Anyway, knowing how obsessed I am, my fiancee sent me this link yesterday. It’s from the English premiere and Alan talks there about how singing and hard work was required from him while shooting the movie. But I guess you've already seen it.

Thanks for the welcome and Sweeney Todd was a great movie.I do however wish Alan had a bigger role in it.But do like Johnny Depp. So,I got to double enjoy the movie.I loved the song "Pretty Women" Rickman and Depp sing together and was very surprised how well Mr.Depp can sing.As you will also notice in the Sweeney Todd movie there are also two other people who act in this movie who also have starred in Harry Potter.Look for Mrs.Lovett and The Beedle and you will know who I am talking about.I just bought the Sweeney Todd soundtrack today to download on my laptop. So,I can listen to that deep voice of Rickmans anytime I want!I did however enjoy a few of the songs in the movie and the soundtrack to me is worth the cost even if Im not much for broadway type music.I also recently purchase Alans movie "Mesmer"that hard to find and was wondering if anyone else has viewed this movie and what they thought about it.If not what is your favorite movie other than Harry Potter that Alan plays in.

I really liked him in Galaxy Quest, mostly because his character matures. It seems nearly every role he gets is a grown man who just never matures into a fully responsible adult. Go figure! I’ve yet to see Sweeny Todd, it looks brutal! But there’s the bizarre twist of AR’s character being attracted to Helen Bonham-Carter (Bellatrix) which will make it interesting.

I’m lucky in that my man likes to mimic Alan Rickman’s voice & style. The best time was when he Snape-enhanced the ‘Quigley Down Under’ movie for me and acted out new scenes where Snape/Masterson wins. Screamingly funny!

A little note! In a recent issue of Toyfare the writer proclaimed that there should be a toy made of every role Alan Rickman has ever played. He’s that awesome! happy.gif

Reading the previous posts, I have to humbly admit that I haven’t seen many of the movies starring Alan. Definitely not the one you mention, Trish_Rickman. Obviously, I have huge gaps in my knowledge.

The one I’ve seen and liked him in is definitely Sense and Sensibly, some *gasps* twelve years ago. This must have been the first one with him, actually. I particularly adore the costumes in the movie, the one of Alan reminds me so much of the costume he has on as Severus. The combination of the black cloak and white protruding collar (or cuffs for that matter) looks simply awesome.

Just recently I’ve been enjoying him in Love Actually. I can watch this on and on and on. When I was talking, in my last post, about him being more or less the same in each movie with regard to his expression and gestures, there is a little example here. Have you ever noticed the expression he wears in Love Actually when in his office he answers Sarah’s question: “Do you think Karl knows?” with a simple “Yes.” His slightly raised eyebrow always makes me laugh. And he makes the very same gesture in GoF when says: “Veritaserum. Three drops of this and You-Know-Who himself would spill his darkest secrets. The use of it on a student is, regrettably, forbidden.” The twitch of his eybrow accompanying “regrettably” is just the same and adorable to the same extent.

Ok, this does not enhance the discussion any further, but I think a little bit of rambling on Alan simply cannot hurt. smile.gif

Trish, "Mesmer" is an odd movie, and I think if anyone other than Rickman had played Mesmer, the movie would have been completely unbearable to watch. It's very slow, and pretty strange in concept. It's a beautiful movie, though, as far as looks. Costumes are gorgeous, actors are on their A game, settings are beautiful. The plot is the thing that slows it, in my opinion, but it's definitely worth watching for an Alan fan.

I think that Alan brings a certain amount of cynical comedy into each of his roles, but I don't think he does it at all to the detriment of the characters he's portraying. Perhaps thats what makes it seem that he's cast as similar characters. I don't see that as the case. I think that he's got a great ability to chose roles that fit him, ones that he's confident that he can portray accurately. I also think that he's got a rare ability as a star not to take himself too seriously. He's not afraid to take risks, though, and his spectrum of roles can attest to that; it's just that he's able to bring a certain familiarity to each of his roles.

My favorite role of his aside from Snape is probably the Sheriff of Nottingham. Colonel Brandon. Hans Gruber. Yeah, well, it's hard to pick just one, isn't it?

I love the word cynical to describe Alan because it fits oh too well for all of his characters.

As for my favorite movies he stars in, I would basically agree with Janet when saying that his roles in Die Hard, Robin Hood: Prince of Theives, Sense & Sensibility, Sweeney Todd, and, of course, Harry Potter are the best.

I have a rather large list of Alan movies under my belt, both watched and owned. The list has been accumulated from over the past 5 years, so that just goes to show my obsession.

The winner for the weirdest role I've seen Alan in is An Awfully Big Adventure. This movie was odd... very, very odd. Other than that, Dogma is the only other that I would consider 'odd', but that's just because the movie is a little out there; funny though!

Thank you for your support, guys! I appreciate it. Things are settling down, slowly, so hopefully I will be back full-force soon!

Ashley

I've only watched few of Alan's films, but most notably was Sweeney Todd. I just kept singing Pretty Women (the song sung by Depp and Rickman) after watching it at the movies. The song just stuck in my head. Playing Snape is still my favorite of all time, he brought the character of Snape to life.

sad.gif I'm a little deprived in the movie department that Rickman's been in. I watch a lot of movies, but they're the new, special effects loud movies. Either that or war movies.

I have seen Robin Hood though, but it was a long time ago, before I knew about Alan Rickman. I got more into Snape and Rickman after The Prizoner of Azkaban came out. (Well, I feel in love with the character after that movie.)

I haven't seen Sweeney Todd, but my friend has the soundtrack, and I fell in love with Pretty Women after I heard it. It's now on my iTunes and iPod, I can listen to his voice whenver I want now tongue.gif

I might have to have a movie weekend and watch some Rickman filled movies. Ahhh! That sounds so fun shutup.gif
