I'm sorry if there is already a topic up like this (couldn't find one when I searched) or if it is not allowed (I'll completely understand it it gets deleted)Ive got presentations next week, having eventually got through school, college and a degree I have signed up for more punishment in the form of a masters (no exams but we do have the more evil form of dun dun duuuuu...presentations) - I have an anxiety disorder which makes me have panic attacks and stuff at such times BUT I have got through it, and since I'm sort of specialising in affective disoders I thought that it might be a nice idea to set up a topic where people who are doing exams and stuff who are feeling the stress might be able to share ideas, and tips for coping or perhaps you may just like to come on the rant about the injustice of the exam process (this stage usually hit me the few days before an exam

) or defend it. So that people could support each other through it - what do you think, would anyone be interested?
I'm going to be a bit busy over the next couple of days (like I said, but I still manage to get distracted - all too often

) but when all of this is all over I could post some of the stuff that I have learnt on my course(neuroscience) and from personal experience about ways of coping through panic attacks, stress and exams but please feel free (it would be appreciated) topost your own tips for exam revision etc.
I think that exam time is coming up isn't it, so maybe if you just wanted a break and say stuff like 'man, these exams are stressing me out' and we could all nod sympathetically

or give a heart 'woo hoo' to people who are doing really well, just to give each other a boost
I hope that you like the idea
for now, Good luck to anyone with upcoming exams/presentations/coursework

I just finished exams myself--always a nice feeling to get through with everything.
My advice for exams is to remember that in the end it's just a grade. You may close some doors by getting low marks, but the diplomas and degrees that you're working for are more important than your GPA--especially once you get into a college or university.
Also, not that it's any consolation, but grades are just imperfect measures of the knowledge and ability you've gained. If you work hard to make sure you know, understand, and can apply what you are learning, you will have far more success in your life than if you cram all the information into your brain the night before an exam, then forget it as soon as the final exam ends. What's most important is that you learn the material--grades are secondary.
Good luck with final exams everyone. And please don't interpret what I've said to mean that you shouldn't try to get the best marks possible.

Being in year 8 we don't have many exams, we don't get half-yearlys, but I always manage to do well in exams without studying hard. My form of studying is reading a few notes the night before the exam and then completely forgetting about it until school the next day!
We have exams for Japanese every ten or so weeks just to make sure we are learning and in other subjects, instead of making us write essays they give us an exam.
When I get to year 10 I have the school certificate, which, basically you need but then you can choose to stay for your Higer school certificate in year 12. This determines whether you get into University at the time but the HSC isn't everything.
My friend has exams all this week and next and isn't too happy, she's in year 10!

Well being in 8th grade, I do have to take Mid-Terms and Finals. Mid-terms are done in the middle of the year, and now we have finals left. Usually we start finals early, but they are leaving it near the end of the school year. We have 13 more school days until we go on summer break. School is over on May 26, and finals start the 19 and finishes the 23.
Not looking forward to it really. My mind is on summer break already!

We just finished our end-of-year official exams, which are called CRTs. I am not really sure what it stands for, just something something testing.
I dont care about my grades that much, because they dont measure intellegence, like IQs or stuff like that, and i actually do better on my exams when I dont care about it. When I took my test to go to high school early, I aced it only because I didnt want to go there in the first place, but my mum made me go, and here I am. I think it was for the best though. All my teachers told me to get extra sleep before exams, but its all a big fat lie. When I did my math exams, I only got 2 hours of sleep, and I got a pretty good score on it.

Ewww exams. My school is on kind of an odd schedule, so I won't have to worry about those for another few weeks, but I can certainly empathize. I think my best advice for those of you who are taking exams right now would be to
not worry. Especially with final exams, you really do already know the material if you've been going to class, so all you need to do is run through the study guide to refresh your memory and then relax. I firmly believe that stress is the biggest cause of people doing badly on exams, so try not to let it get to you

I had my German Oral exam today - I don't know the mark for sure yet because the tape has to be sent of the the examiners to be marked but my teacher thinks I got at least 35/40 which is an A! I was so chuffed!
Our school broke up for study leave today. I have no more school for 16 weeks! But I have to go in for my 4 weeks of GCSE's exams. Our school is actually really wierd, they don't tell us when our study leave is till last lesson of the day we finnish so we don't riot or something. But we knew that today was the last day we definatly were in school, so everyone went around signing peoples shirts and stuff. Of course we fount out in the end that we had some amazingly official cemimony at the end of the day, so everyone was supposed to look way smart and all, but actually had really graffitied shirts on! It was quite funny at the time.
My exams start on the 22nd may, I have my Music listning. I then have exams every week day untill the 19th June.
My really odd tip that I descovered when I was preparing for my music practical is this:
Find a random food or drink that you very rarely have. Mine was Diet Coke. Convince yourself that the amount of E's in that drink make you the most amazing at whatever your exam is on. This raises your confidence, which raises your ability, which raises your confidence...ect.

these are the thing that I always do whenever I take any examination
-review at night, I don't review at dawn because for sure I'm still asleep during that time
-before I start reviewing I get some sleep then when I woke up I started to review so that the things that I am reviewing will be the first things my mind will absorb.
-I don't like people asking me questions about the exams, like if my classmates are tesing me, I don't like that because I always found out that I missed to review some things and that would just make me panic.
-the most important thing for me during exam is to stay calm and relax.

I'm currently studying to get into university and are doing a bridging course which is first year university standard and is moderated by the university. It is an extremely stressful course and I have exams in around 5 - 7 weeks.
I find that singing really loud, (it doesn't matter if it's good or bad) helps, for me, it releaves a lot of tension.
Also I find that a soak in the tub, while reading your notes can be handy, just be careful not to drop them
Good luck everyone.

Eeeek, I've got my Physics and Calculus semester finals this week, and I feel slightly stressed.

Good luck, Rickmansmissus, it sure sounds stressful!
We had a presentation on an educational game we had to build on Tuesday and I had to write most of what we had to say and the final report. That nearly had me cranky, because my group kept hinting at us having little time and that we really should be getting on with it. In the end, our product rocked. Well I think so at least ... have a look (I didn't build much, though, just added my expert opinion

)
Whoozball!Whoozball! It's a lot like Foozball, but it works with wind blowing through valves in the tube, so it shows the effect of vectors and force.
Well anyway, it was fun in the end, but it was still a lot of work.

Wow, that's awesome Laurette!
I started this year at a UK secondary school, so i had to sit exams last year. Most people do Common Entrance, which is important in that if you fail your education is stuffed, but the fact is that it is insanely easy...Anyhow i didn't do CE as i took a scholarship to my school, but alot of people get stressed about it for some reason...
Anyhow good luck with the Whoozball Laurette!

1. Remember to breathe.
2. Study as much as you can, but not to the point where you lose your mind.
3. Rean each question and answer carefuly.
4. If you don't know the answer, move on to the next one and come back to it later.
5. Don't rush; pace yourself.
6. Relax

Ahhh *puts feet up on desk*...May 26 was the last day of school! I finished all my Finals and got my FCAT results! Boy that was a sad yet happy day. High School here I come!
On the FCAT they score you from 1 to 5 in Reading and Math. And lucky me I got both a 5 for Reading and Math! Yay!
When you prepare for exams you should not be stressing it. Either you know the material or you don't. I'd suggest people to study for an hour before bed. But before that just relax. I find that studying before you go to bed helps you remember things easier. Plus you go to bed with what you studied embedded in your mind. Trust me that helps a lot! That's a method I did the day before I took my FCAT.

*headache* Hmm...I hate exams - I'm one of those people who really excel in research assessments/essays but can do reasonably average in exams. I guess with practice, it will improve over time. I have exams upcoming in the next few weeks and my tactic is just relax and take my time in reviewing things and dot down some points/sentence in an interesting way so that way you remember under the exam conditions. I'm happy that one of my units has a major essay as a final exam (which you are given a month to prepare) rather than 3 hours exams because I work much better under that conditions.
Yes, I agree with you pisces_girl - I don't like when we discuss before and after the exams because then I get stressed and I panic that I missed something important etc etc. So I just ignore them and just bring a fun book to read before the exam. Perhaps that's why my marks a bit funny in exams?
I guess this year is easier for me because I've chosen the subjects that I'm interested in and want to focus on them further, therefore I'm much keener and take an active interest in them. If you do subjects that you hate (my past experience - maths) then it's so hard to study for it and be proactive about it.
Good luck guys with your exams and for those who have already completed them, excellent work! *jealous* (just wish it was over)

At the moment I'm pretty fine with my work amount but I'm already scared of next semester. I will have to take 4 courses. Doesn't sound much? Mind you that makes 12 hours of lecture, 2 hours of exercise each and 2 hours of tutorial of two of these. Finally leaves me with 24 hours of actual work in university per week. So far so funny. There are others who sit in there more. But these are rather difficult courses so there will be loads of homestudy and I only have one try at each exam. Every four in two weeks or otherwise I'll be gone.

I wish I had managed to get at least the two comapably "simple" *haha* off my chest this time. But noooo. One I failed because of two points and the other one - well, I never asked
My only hope is that when all is done I will be able to move. I love this town but after then 2 1/2 years I need a change.
Ah well, if I fail I'll have to move back with my parents and will be unemployed without any idea what to do with life

but I try to block this thought now.

-sigh- tell you what, exams are the most sucky thing on earth. I am in 7th grade and we are going to have the exams on Friday and our school are still giving us projects and loads of homework to do!!! And I can't watch my world cup.

And or exams are going for more than a week. I have no idea why are we doing religious studies---I am not even a Catholic or anything!! And I don't suppose people will ask you to recite something from the bible or tell them about history in a job interview, would they? I just hate exams. There are so much revision to do and you have to start revisioning weeks before it (yeah, I am those if-i-don't-get-the-top-three-i-will-die nerds). And i am sure I'm gonna fail Chinese and Math! I don't think projects are that bad though. You'll just have to read something and analyse it and rewrite it.
Yeah-Rickmansmissus, if only we had a Time Turner.

Thankfully, all of my final exams for the year are over...except for one. And that
one is the biggest of the year! For those of you who live in New York State, you know about the Regents. They are definitely not the most difficult exams in teh world, but our teachers have their way of making the students the most stressed people in the world over them! I did wonderfully on my Earth Science Regents last year, and this year it is Biology time. I
am a fan of Bio, actually, but I must say that my teacher this year was not the greatest. It really is not her fault; it is her first year teaching a main subject (she was formerly a teacher of Support Classes, for students who do not score up to par, in a way). Plus, my class was filled with bigmouths, which did not help her first teaching experience.
Anyway, I am one of those kids who cannot study, but scores very highly on tests anyway. I absorb 95% of information during class, and have very good visual and audio memories, which is quite lucky for me. Even still, I do not feel fully prepared for the test and I think I need to study badly. And now I am getting stressed out because I do not think I will score up to my personal standards.
So what do you guys do in these situations? Study, study, study, or stay cool and relax?

Just wanted to say congratulations to everyone who has completed (well almost) their exams/essays! It must be a great feeling when something is done and you don't have to worry about it for a while. Good luck to you, David, with the Regents - sounds positively frightening...but sounds like you have a great attitude so I'm sure you'll be fine! I have three exams coming up this week and next Tuesday - each of them go for 3 hours (man, why so long...zzz...)
Hmm...I'm not too good with studying either, and like you, when I'm learning, I can pretty much remember things because I love learning but for some reason, I get bored or distracted easily when studying for exams. Surprisedly, I do quite well with the exams results. My solution is just to revise on the past papers and I also write out some brief point form notes - nothing intense...I was never one of those people who get really stressed over it, and at the night before exams, I actually read a fun/enjoyable book so I can relax and go to sleep peacefully.
Once again, congratulations and good luck!

I've just got the computing theory and sociology exam to go for this half of the year. Not sure about the next half.
To relax I read, not text books and if my eyes are too blurry I chill out and listen to music with headphones on. If I find I am too restless for that, I take it out on the punching bag or sing at the top of my lungs

Yay! I just finished one of my exams this afternoon - now I'm exhausted from the information overload in my head...eek...I have another one this Friday but it wouldn't be so bad as today! I'm not doing any study tonight - I deserve a break from studying and go online to VTM for a relaxation
Are you majoring in computing theory and sociology next semester - Did I get that right? I am not sure what to do next semester as I have so many opportunities I want to try out at once and it's hard to make up my mind - at least I have end of July to make a decision...
Yes, I agree with you - something fun to read before bed is probably a good way to wind down - I read a bit of CoS last night and I was just so relaxed that I dreamt of Snape! It must have worked because I felt so good today and felt like I could tackle the exam questions

I finished my last exam on Monday! Hense on VTM again - first time in ages. Welsh was my last one - easiest exam on this planet. Although parts of it were plain hilarious - "fflipin 'ec!" is apparantly fliping heck in Welsh - that caused me to have a laughing fit in the middle of the exam. Not a good idea!
But before that I have failed maths. I did well in English - that paper was written for me! My answer to one of the questions was pretty good if I do say so myself. So, thats good.
My German was OK, the lisning was so hard our German teacher had to look up words. The reading was so easy I thought I had been given the wrong paper.
I now have no school until September! Yes!

oh my god! i have only just begun year ten and already the stress of exams and coursework is being piled upon me! I think it's daft what some teachers do and say because they really don't think about how it will make you feel, the pressure they put on you is stupid, i mean how is it meant to help you! i've already had to draft a piece of english coursework and we didn't even have our real teacher for the lessons and when it came to taking it home to finish we couldn't even have the text to work form which i thought was stupid because you could hardly do a thing as we hadn't really done any preperation work in class! so stressful, so annoying! Snap, K.Lupin_werewolf! I've just started year 10 too (well, I say just started, it's been a month). And we had to do a whole descriptive piece for English in the first week, and the final complete thing is due in next Friday. It's really annoying because the teacher didn't even look at our first drafts, we had to mark someone elses in the class and the guy who marked mine said it was an A* (I mean, as if!). I think he must have been a bit weird, I can't say his was all that good though.
Anyway, I don't really have any tips, I really do need some though for keeping up with homework, I find it so boring that I just come on VTM when I'm meant to be on the computer looking up stuff. I get so much Art homework, I don't think I'm going to be able to keep up with it. I'm rubbish at it anyway, last piece of work we did I only got a C... not very good when everyone else had As or Bs. I really don't like my art teacher!

Wow, I haven't been in here for ages either. Guess what? You know that piece of work I was talking about before, I actually did get an A* for it. I was really amazed. But I have this weird thing about my English work... I never think I have done well at all, but I end up getting really good marks. I think I've always been like that, I'm too much of a perfectionist so I have to keep redoing work until I think it's okay.QUOTE

Yes, I agree, English is a really bad subject for all the essays and stuff. In fact I have one that I should be doing right now (about Frankenstein) but I'm not. I can't really get started on it... I'm really bad at thinking of a good introduction. And the first draft of the essay is due in either tomorrow or Friday. I really hope it's for Friday because if I'm going to do it now, for tomorrow, it will turn out to be a load of rubbish just shoved onto the page. What courses have you done so far? I think my class is just about to finish the Frankenstein stuff and we did this poetry thing first term. There's loads of other subjects I have to complete essays for as well. The main one at the moment is my religious studies coursework which I wrote out last night (it took me about three hours to copy it off the computer because our printer wouldn't work) and then the teacher said that it was way to long, so instead of improving it I actually have to make it loads shorter. Did you know, if you go way way over the word limit in an essay the marker just stops reading where they reach the amount of words you should have even if they've only read half of the essay. That sounds really unfair, doesn't it?Hmm... I think I have to do a History essay soon as well, about Germany after the first world war, but that's quite interesting to write about so it won't be too bad...

Golden Phoenix, I might have some helpful hints with your introduction. My writing teacher told my class that the most important thing about a paper is to get the reader hooked into reading it. When I start a paper I usually like to start with a rhetorical question, and that's when the wheels in my brain start turning.

Hi Golden Phoenix and K_Lupin werewolf,I'm going to finish 10th grade (There is till 2 months for me to finish).I have currently my model exams(they are like Board exam or the Annual exam and Boards exams are the one which creates our future. If you get less marks in that exam you won't get any job in the future)
So next model exam is English and I don't feel it is difficult!.I mean, you don't need to mug up anything English.Just use your common sense and write the exam.Maybe in England it is difficult though many people say the only exam which difficult is English(here)!

and I agree with you that 10th grade is pretty hard!.and I'm waiting to finish it.I've the Boards in march and 2nd model is coming next month. So I think I will be pretty busy studying and won't be able to come online.Anyways,Golden Phoenix and K_Lupin werewolf,do your 10th grade well!
P.S.a small tip for 10th grade students-Do your lessons daily and don't wait for the exams to come and don't study your lessons at the last minute because then you will suffer very badly. So do the lessons which are taught on that day itself.

Okay, thanks for that. I remember now that I got the best grade in the class once for this essay I wrote... and that started with a rhetorical question. But that was in year 9 though. Oh well, it was still a good piece of work... I'm not really sure how I would use a rhetorical question in the essay I'm currently writing though because it's like a description of the language used in Frankenstein which you can't really begin with a question or anything. But I guess I could try. Either way I'll remember it for future coursework.QUOTE(Phoenix92 @ Jan 10 2007, 04:20 PM)

You'll be fine don't worry. If anyone should be worried about exams then it's me. Last year when i was in year 8, i did my English SAT exam (a year early and i got a level 7 not bad really) but that means that this year while i'm in year 9 i have started my English and English Literature GCSEs. It's hard to see what i'm doing when i write it like that, i'll write it in a list instead.
This year after the Easter holidays I am doing:
Maths SAT
Science SAT
I.T GCSE
Statistic GCSE
Art GCSE
English language and lit GCSE.
I have to revise for my maths, science and statistics, finish a piece of Shakespeare coursework and all of my statistics coursework and i.t. I have already done my art exam before the holidays and it went really well. My teacher said that if my coursework is at the same standard as my exam, then i'm well on my way to an A* and i'm only 14! The statistics is only a 1 year course though so i have my exam on the 21st of June and i am soooooo nervous.
You probably didn't understand a word of that but oh well, i am getting so stressed about it. VTM sort of calms me down though, i just come on here and chat to forget about it all because all of my friends are the same.

Ugh. I've had so many exams in my lifetime. I absolutely deteset them! haha! But what I do to relieve my stress is to study with music on and with a milkshake. And to help me sleep, I have a glass of milk. You need sleep in order to be alert and ready to study the next day. A good night's sleep will reduce stress. For those of you who have insomnia like me ... if you can't go to sleep, just lay in bed and relax. It's so much better than laying in bed and being stressed. Hope I could help!

Yes! I just finished my first 3 exams...they were the hardest and now only have two ones to go. My brain is already sorta fizzing out, because those tests were so freaking long! My Economics test was 11 pages and my Trig test took me almost the entire two hours, and that Spanish final today......lets just say that my final translation she won't be able to understand! I am sorta relieved, but am freaking out that I am so relieved and not studying right now!

, anyhow, I should just chill out, I had an Italian Soda this afternoon, with fluffy whip cream...yum! So my advice is to study, but not too hard otherwise it gets all mixed up in your brain!

I just finished my exams I know for sure I did good on my geometry, biology, and history exams. But I don't know what my grades are for my English, Gym, or Art. I did good, and I hope this will keep my GPA up.
Good luck to all the Exam takers out there!!

I detest exams!!!! I have 3 or 4 tests per week. Then I have finals in December and May.In December you have to take them, but in May if have an A average you don't have to.Last year I didn't have to take any finals in May.Some tests I have to take are absoloutely ridiculous.Like Religion come on.My best subjects and easiest are English and Math.

I've also finished my GCSEs and I'm also going into grade 12. I'm pretty excited because it's my last year but it's also stressful thinking about how much work I'll have. And I'm not going to be going to my school in New York for the first two or three weeks because I'll be going to one in Maine while I'm doing "Grease" for a big theatre company. So I'm going to be pretty stressed out for the first little while.
