Hi all,

Just got back from England, where I went to London, Oxford and Gloucester. There I saw platform 9 and 3/4; the market place where Hagrid and Harry go before the Leaky Cauldron. In Oxford I saw what the Great all was based upon and in Gloucester some of Hogwarts' corridors.

My question to everyone is

Has anyone been to any Harry Potter movie locations?

If you have what did you think of the place in comparison to what you saw on screen and what were your feelings within the space? I felt a bit embarassed at Kingscross, as technically I was just taking a picture of a wall.

Cheers for reading my first post, bit long...but just want to know what people think.

I -puffs out my chest proudly- have been to Platform 9&3/4!

I know that's a common movie places that many people have been in, but for god's sake, I live in the opposite end of the globe! (Or very far) And the cart thing was a bti wobbly.

This one's a bit of a cheat for me. I used to work in London and had to catch a train to Kings Cross everyday. I now live in Gloucestershire and since Gloucester Cathedral is in my local town centre I visit the cloisters quite a lot. In fact Gloucester has a Harry Potter trail that you can go on.
Kells bells
I've been to the Chamber of Secrets (Wokey Hole). I went into the huge cave and I said to my friend "Woah, this looks like Harry Potter!" Then later in the tour, the guide confirmed my suspitions. There was no huge snakey thing though, it was kinda a normal cave.
I've been to platform 9 3/4. And although it isn't the actual film location (I don't think) my brothers old collages dining hall was so hogwartian you really had to double take.

I was wondering if anyone knew the filming locations for Harry Potter. They used to use several old castles etc across the country and I wondered if they were still doing that or if it was mainly filmed in Leavesden these days. If anyone knows anything that would be great!
evanescence
Well, there are some places!!!
They have filmed in Glencoe(POA SCENERIES), in Glenfinnan, in Leavesden Studios, in London and Thames and in Virginia Waters....There are 6-7 other places and I'll let you know when i find their names... tongue.gif

Wasn't there somewere in scotland? My teacher said she once went there and saw it. It would be a great vacation spot. ~~Come see the Amazing Harry Potter Castle~~. That would be funny.

Little off topic, but maybe they will use one of the safe castles for the posable theam park. Just thinking...

Are you reffering to the scenes like where Harry talks to Cedric about dragons and Draco gets turned into a Ferret. If you are then they were filmed in Oxforfd. Oh the knowledge that Special Features DVDs can bring you tongue.gif

I know that the Hogwarts castle is a castle in Scotland. But things like the Entrance Hall, the Great Hall and the Gryffindor Common room (I think the latter is anyway) are actually sets that have been created in Leavesden studios and are filmed there.

I'm not too sure about any other locations, but a lot of places in England and Scotland are used for a lot of the scenes.

It was rumoured that the actors were seen filming there but whether or not this is true I'm not actually sure.

I think that The castle is real it may not be named Hogwarts but I think that it is real. In the first two movies, the castle lokks so real it is not even animated, because i bought this $800.00 computer disk that tells you what is animated in a movie and what is not, it circles areas in red that are not animated and the whomping willow and the quidditch pitch are the only things that were animated so I think that its a real castle.
deatheater13
Yeah, it's a real castle. There are castles like that all over Europe. Actually, I believe that there are different castles used for the interior and exterior shots.
Ygraine
Um. Do you mean the castle that you look from far away? With that big tower? ( this one?) I hate to shatter your hopes but that is most most definately computerised. I live In scotland and I've been to pretty much all the castles here and... yeah. It's not real sad.gif

However.

The interior is real (some of it at least) but it's not one place. It's different castles catherdrals and the like. In the first film, where the flying lesson is? That's Alnwick. Some of it's in Gloucester (can't spell sorry) catherdral, and a few more including Durham. Hp-Lexicon are quite good at the film locations. I did a search (the link will take you there) and as you can see there are a number of different locations used.

I hope that helps smile.gif

Hogwarts castle in particular, comes in many guises. For the interior they have used, Gloucester Cathedral, Lacock Abbey, in Oxford, Christ Church. Some of the exterior, such as the first flying lesson in PS was filmed at Alnwick Castle, although there are no turrets or towers, they were all CGI.

Actually, They did film at KIng's Cross Station...why wouldn't they?

Anyway, this website shows a few of the places used in the films. Enjoy!

I think that the interior was Kings Cross but for the outside they used St Pancras (sp?) which is like just by Kings Cross because it was more 'visually appealing' than the exterior of Kings Cross.

Wow, etphonehome, thats really cool thanks smile.gif

the castle is real the exterior shot with the big tower and all of that. i live in scotland and found it it is a real castle non computerized.
etphonehome
I'd be interested if you could provide a link for this castle. None of the known sources have ever stated that a castle in scotland was used for shots of Hogwarts castle. The only one documented is Alnwick Castle and even then the long shots were computer generated.

I'm not trying to say you are wrong, I'd just like to see it for myself.

Edit: The above post by Ygraine, who also lives in Scotland and whom I know has visited pretty much all the castles in Scotland, also comfirmed that this is a computer image.
Hermione66
Wut do you mean a LINK! The castle is real i have seen it go and see for your self. Its huge, i wonder what they use it for?

Mod Note: For your information net speak is not allowed on the forums, please refrain from using words like wut in place of what~ thanks.

If this castle exists. there is bound to be a picture of it somewhere on the internet. So I'd like to see it. If you have been to this castle as you say you have, then you will at least be able to name it.

PottyHead
From what I've heard they do use castles to film certain things in, but things like the transfiguration courtyard where Malfoy gets turned into a ferret and Harry talks to Cedric about the dragons in the fourth film were filmed at Oxford Uni.

M most of the corridors and stuff, and mainly in the first two films were filmed in castles in Edinburgh (I think) but the outward appearance of the Hogwarts castle is mostly CGI or a set, Hogwarts isn't actually a real castle as far as I know.
LadyMalfoy
I've been to Almwick Castle, the Castle they use(d?) to film the exterior shot of Hogwarts with, it was quite fun because "Hagrid" and "Dumbledore" showed up. smile.gif

The corridors used in the first two films were shot in Gloucester Cathedral, Lacock Abbey and Durham Cathedral being used for the exterior shots (Harry and Hedwig HPPS)

Gloucester as seen here for CoS and Lacock Abbey.
Not a Scottish Castle in sight!

I have never been to any of the movie locations... and by extension I have never been to any part of Europe. I've only been out of my home country (The United States) three times... Canada when I was three so I don't remember and Australia and New Zealand when I was fourteen.
