1984 is an amazing book. Down with Big Brother!

I just finished reading it in my English class and I hated it. It probably has something to do with the fact that I hate my teacher and she made us booknote it and write an essay after every chapter, and yes, I mean chapter, not part. It was so boring. It also may have had something to do with the fact that I had to read it right after finishing Animal Farm, and they are both trying to get the same point across. But it just really bored me. Now I'm reading Romeo and Juliet. Much better. (I'm a sucker for love stories...)

Wow Kristina, you are the first person that I have head of that hasn't liked 1984. Didn't it make you feel good knowing you didn't have to live in a society like that?
Haha, an essay huh? What about when he had to read "The Theory and Practice of Oligarchial Collectivism?" That had to suck!
D.A
I remembered some others that i liked:

Blood Sinister
The hobbit
Flowers in the attic
The Lovely Bones
Ive read half of The Stand and its great so far
Ive read a little of 1984 aswell but need to finish...i really like it so far though
kelli
Hey everyone! I just finished reading some of the best writing ever! The book is called Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, and her sequel is called New Moon. They are most definitely chick flics...very well written and it is from a girl's perspective as she starts a new high school in a little town in Washington state called Forks. It relates her adventures there and I can't tell anymore or it would give it away tongue.gif . The 3rd book comes out August 7, and it should be just as good as the first 2. I really recommend it, so happy reading! wink.gif

I like being different. lol. Yupp, I actually had to write two essays on that, one on the chapter, and one on the book. I'd say the word sucked would be an understatement. lol. True, I was glad I didn't have to live in that society, but the book bored me. I've liked everything else I've had to read for my English class this year (Five People You Meet in Heaven, To Kill a Mocking Bird, Night, Outsiders, and House on Mango Street), but I haven't been able to get into either of Orwell's books. Maybe there's something wrong with me...I don't know, but I just didn't enjoy them.

Edit:
Sorry kelli, missed your post. I agree, those books are amazing. I can't wait for the next one to come out. Do you know what it's going to be called? I read it someplace but can't remember and it's driving me nuts.

If this is the case for you, than I suggest that you read "Keep the Aspidistra Flying" by George Orwell. It takes a different approach than 1984 and Animal Farm, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's about a guy who has had multiple opportunities to gain wealth, but repeatedly turns it down.
kelli
Thats okay, I think that it is going to be Eclipse, and it has a pink ribbon connected with a few strands..it looks really good! I am sooo excited for it! wub.gif Oh yeah, and did you hear that they are going to make a movie of Twilight?! You should go to her website and see who they have for the characaters!

kelli
Yeah, all you have to do is google Stephenie Meyer and one of the choices is the "official" website, and you click on that and it will pop up. Then you click on the Twilight button and when it opens up there will be buttons on the side and one of them says "Twilight: the movie". Tell me what you think of the choices for Edward!

No problem!

Ok, so does anyone else here like Edgar Allan Poe? I love all of his stuff, especially his short stories. I began to read his writings in 8th grade when I had to do a report on him, and fell in love with it. Now we're studying his works in my Literature class, and I'm really excited! So tell me if you're a Poe-freak, like me...Hah!

I read Animal Farm right before I read 1984 and I wasn't all that fond of that one either. Like I said before, maybe something is wrong with me, considering I seem to be the only person on the planet who doesn't like them.

I'm debating what to read next out of my collection... decisions decisions! lol
Polandbaby16
ummm books love them all. but the last book that i read was the series of "Landover for sale-sold" by Terry Brooks, who also wrote the shannara series. I really enjoy reading his books, they are all fiction, with magic, knights, and quests. And i was just wondering if anyone else has read any of his books? Another book that i finished reading was the series called "Emperor" by Conn Ingualdo i think thats his last name im not sure, but he writes about the life of Julius Ceasur its really good even though i didnt like the ending. sleep.gif
kelli
Mmmm, nope, never heard of him, but maybe I should check out his writing...was it good? What does he write about...fantasy? I love fantasy....obviously, since I like HP. tongue.gif . I also love the author Robin McKinley...some of her books are really good, they are twists on the well known fairy tales..like Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and Robin Hood, etc. They are childrens books, but hey..they are good. biggrin.gif .
Polandbaby16
Hahaha yah kelli I never heard of Robin McKinley, but I definitally will look her up and probably read one of her books, just to see what her books are like. Terry Brooks is a really good author. All of his books are fantasy, whith wizards, knights, and stuff like that, they are all very interesting. With Conn Igualdin, I dont think that you would like his books Kelli.
fany_monkey
Terry Brooks... *thnks* i've heard that name before *thinks* oh darn i don't know if i have read any thing by him darn memory!
currently i am reading runaways by V.C Andrews it's a really good book even tho i don't like all of V.C Andrews books i like some biggrin.gif
Weasly_Girly_83
hmph...I haven't heard of any of these authors before...*goes and sulks in a corner* lol. Have any of you guys heard of Gregory Maguire? He wrote Wicked and Son of a Witch, and a few other things. I have read 3 of his books and really love his stuff.
Polandbaby16
lol this is so funny!!! we all have our own fav authors, but no one else knows them lol.

Weasly_Girly_83- lol never heard of that author
fany_monkey-also i have never heard of that author.

A book that i am planning on reading is The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Briece, he wrote this book in like 1914 so i would not be surprised if no one heard of him. lol

In response to witherwings09, I really liked number 13.
My favourite was probably The Slippery Slope, but they're all pretty good.
I read the first book from the TTYL/TTFN/l8r g8r series, and I thought it was pretty good. My sister liked it more than I did, and has read all three... yeah.

I like "My Teacher is an Alien" series because although it's mostly fiction, some realizations can be found in the latter part.

I also like "Teen Angels: Heaven Can't Wait". It's a love story that almost made me cry. It got me teary-eyed and very few books have made me do that.

What else? Hmm...

I dont know. Maybe I'll try reading Eragon sometime... I'll just borrow from a classmate. biggrin.gif

i like all of the books by James Patterson. my favorite though is probably Cat and Mouse and Along Came A Spider. i like them the most because they have Sonjei (sp?) and he is the best baddy. i also like other random books about mystery, suspense, and fantasy. my favorie fantasy book, besides Harry Potter of course, is Eragon + Eldest by Christopher Paolini. they are similar to LOTR and a little bit of star wars but they are really well written especially considering the authour was 15 when he started.
i also read a book called I Have Lived A Thousand Years. im not exactly sure who it was written by but it was about the holocaust and it was frightening how real everything sounded and made you feel.

I've started to read the series :Fearless FBI- by Francine Pascal. I'm reading the 4th book and its really good. For the "back of the book" reviw. "This girl Gaia, has a genetic defect, she can't feel the emotion fear. She's seen many people die, including her mother, and boyfriend(who were both shot). She is working and traing to be an FBI agent and is having alot of trouble adjusting."

I'm also reading the Alex Rider series. I'm on Eagle strike, the fourth book. It's interesting.

I'm getting into the adventure series type books, and if any people can tell me about another adventure series let me know.

Its called 'Alice!' There are many different things that go on in these books and they are great for everyone. And I found out they are making a movie so I cant wait!

Oh, Alice, I love that book, and I never knew that they were making a movie out of it. Ooh now I must see it, can't wait!

Right now I'm reading yet another V.C. Andrews book called My Sweet Audrina. So far it's really good yet there are some boring parts placed in between all the good stuff and it's sort of a slow read at first, but I love it!

Hmmm....here are a few off the top of my head, which I'll do this by movie ratings:

PG:

Mary, Bloody Mary!!!!! by Carolyn Meyer-- an AMAZING book, it's historical fiction abotu Mary I of England, very well done, you'll learn a lot, and yet it's a heart-breaking story at the same time!

Anna of Byzantium by Tracy Barrett--another amazing historical fiction book (though a little less historical) that will break your heart--I cried during this book and Mary, Bloody Mary

The Moorchild by Eloise McGraw--a fantasy that will also break your heart--so beautiful and touching, and exciting...read it!

Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer--sooo amazing! highly recommended as well, especially for HP fans! Colfer is hilarious, even in person! I saw him at a book signing...

The Chrestomanci Quartet--again, Witch Week in particular you'll love if you love HP

His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman

Daughters of the Moon series by Lynne Ewing

R:

The Sevenwaters Trilogy by Juliet Marillier--some of my favorite books ever (more so than HP!) so beautiful, so exciting, so well-written--these books will entrance you, starting with the first one, "Daughter of the Forest"--the trilogy is a family epic spanning three generations, set in Celtic 10th century Ireland as the old magic and ways and the Fair Folk are beginning to die out, and one family who still uphold the old traditions fights to save a certain Island key to their religion which has been taken over by a certain family of Britains....this is romance at its best (forget the juvenile nonsense of HBP!), though with lots of action and suspense as well.

HOWEVER there are some disturbing scenes and some sex, so to be save I put it under R...I wouldn't read it until high school, depends on the person.

Kushiel's Legacy Trilogy by Jacquline Carey--WARNING, there is a LOT of graphic sex in these books--definitely not appropriate until high school, and then it depends on the person (I did want to post it here though, b/c I know there are tennagers and adults here who I think would really like these books)...I found it pretty shocking when I first read them when I was 15, but you get used to it, and it has a purpose--the heroine is a courtesan, in a country (in a skewed alternate Renaissance version of our world--she's from Terre d'Ange, which is France, England is called Alba, etc) where the religious principle is "Love as Thou Wilt", lol...

But yeah, the first book is Kushiel's Dart, with the others being Kushiel's Chosen and Kushiel's Avatar and if you're old enough these books have it all--romance (REALLY good romance too--Carey is excellent at writing it--another "romance done right" situation), adventure, action, intrigue, suspense, fantasy, drama, etc....Carey is excellent at characterization, you will fall in love with the characters, especially the heroine, Phedre, who is the most unique heroine I have ever read, but who is very convincing and entertaining to read, and the grand villainess, Melisande Sharizai, who is the best villain I've ever encountered as well--she's very sinister and malevolent, clever, deadly, yet not a cardboard cut-out two-dimensional bad guy like say, Voldemort--she's complex and exciting, and has an unforgettable and fascinating relationship with Phedre in the most extreme love/hate relationship you'll ever see, lol...I think it makes a difference that Melisande is capable of loving, when villains can't love they're just not as interesting....and she has a son who now has his own trilogy, with the second book coming out this June! (Honestly, I'm in some ways more excited about this than DH, b/c I know I'm guarenteed to like this next book, as I love all of her books, while it's not as safe a guarentee with HP as I've learned these days)...but yeah, I would HIGHLY recommend these books to people of age, I was hooked from the first chapter, and they remain some of my fave books, one of the series I can always count on...
