Try "The Warrior Heir" just the first book in a completely brilliant trilogy
monkeymushroom
'His Dark Materials' is alright. Sometimes there are moments, though, when nothing happens and then all it needs is that reference life's questions. Like, for instance, i was reading the second book and only at the end did it start to pick up. I cannot believe it though, my favourite character died - if you've read it you might know who i mean (his daemon is called Hester).

I also quite like 'Twilight Saga', but as a film it was so much better and it really touched a lot of nerves which the book didn't.

I read a book during the previous summer holiday, which was also very good; it's new and it's called 'Young Samurai: Way of the Warrior'. I really recommend it, even if you know nothing about the Samurai way of life; it will teach you alot about Japanese culture and the tradition and value of warriors.

I also read 'Airman' last year and i really liked it: although it was pretty difficult to read, what with the complicated way it was written. I read a book that was called 'Here Lies Arthur' and that was rather interesting.
But i have to say, next to 'Harry Potter' and 'Airman', 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' is by far the best read for me. I don't know why but it seems to me that there are not that many fantastic books in the world - hense why JK Rowling is the best writer.
hot-for-harry
I have heard before (not just here, I mean) that the Warrior Heir series is a good read.

I think everyone here already knows that I love the Twilight Saga so I won't go into great detail about how much I like that series.

I was reading To Kill a Mockingbird, but about halfway through I decided the book was too dry and I couldn't stand to read it to the end. If anybody else has read it and wants to let me know if it is worth reading to the end, please do let me know. I will give it another try.

Over the weekend I read the series Uglies. There are three books in the series: Uglies, Pretties, and Specials. But I will let you know that the ending is really disappointing. A good series, though. Nothing very inappropriate and it's actually a pretty easy read.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians are also worth the read for anyone who likes Greek mythology or if you just want to read a good book.

It's been awhile since I've had a good read, does anyone by any chance recommend any books? Books that aren't the Twilight series lol I've read them more than I can count. And by the way if anyone needs to read something I'd say Coraline and then go watch the movie biggrin.gif

the Demonata series by Darren Shan are excellent. if you like spooky books then its a must read! smile.gif

also the shapeshifter series by ali sparkes are great

Here's my list of favorites:

Pride and Prejudice (and other Jane Austen books)
The Lord of the Rings
The Grimm Fairy Tales (I don't know why it was in the children's section of the bookstore huh.gif If they were visual they'd be R-rated)
Wyrd Sisters
Witches Abroad
Hogfather

Other Terry Pratchet books
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Fitzwilliam Darcy trilogy (a well-written rewrite of P&P from Darcy's POV)
Shakespeare's works
The Canterbury Tales

I recommend - if you're an avid fantasy-book reader, like me - 'Howl's Moving castle' by Diana Wynne Jones. She's just as charming a writer and storyteller JK Rowling. If you liked the movie then you'll love this book; it's smoothly written and it comes second on my list to Harry Potter.
You Found Me
I just finished reading A Separate Peace by John Knowles. I thought chapters 1-12 were incredible... there is only 13 chapters. The last chapter was pointless, I wish I hadn't even read that chapter. The only complaint I have about the book is I correctly guessed who would die later in the novel by the first paragraph of chapter 4 and I had a decent guess of how he would die that was about half-way right. I guessed correctly where the injury that led up to his death took place. I thought his death should have been more exciting it was kinda lame how he died. I would give this novel a 9 of 10. A 10 without chapter 13 and the predictability, but im good at predictions.

Oooh. Bibliophile= Me.

Gotta love this thread. Okay well. Firstly, I agree with "Howl's Moving Castle" it is a hilarious read. Diana Wynne Jones, can't say enough about her.

Before I began, most of these books have strong female characters so you're forewarned. (If you don't like the type...which I can't imagine why but ok. )

Tamora Pierce's The Protector of the Small Series =

First Test
Page
Squire
Lady Knight

Not only is it a fresh insight into the world of Tortall but it's quite relatable and exciting. I must have reread these books many many times over.

Rewritten Fairy Tales by Gail Carson Levine=

Cinderellis and The Glass Hill
Sonora and the Long Sleep
The Fairy's Mistake
The Princess Test

And if you never read any of those at least read Ella Enchanted. TT___TT That book is divine.

I also like the Enchanted Forest Trilogy

Dealing with Dragons is the first.

Pretty sure that these have at least been mentioned already but those are the Young Adult books I read.

Oh and for a bittersweet, melancholy, weep for the no happy ending try DarkAngel, A Gathering Of Gargoyles and The Pearl of the Soul of the World.

I think those are the titles.

Finally. My favorite book. Keturah and Lord Death. IF you love Severus, and dark tortured anti heros this is the book for you. It's stirring, poetic and I want my own copy.

............

I may have gotten a bit carried away. Sorry.

Ah, and hope you get addicted!! wub.gif

I was looking in a bookstore a while back and i came across an aouthor by the name of Ted Dekker? Im not sure if anyone has said this already but He is a very good author that rights some really intense books.

He is a christian author that rights about serial killers or people that are supposed to represent the devil and people comeing and sacrificing themselves for each other and saving each other just as Jesus did. I find them very interesting and very good

Here are a couple that i enjoyed!

-Three (theres a movie)
-Saint
-Showdown
-Obsessed
-House (theres a movie)

All of those are great reads for young adults that i found.

Speaking of Nora Roberts, I just read her Born In trilogy and I have to say...I LOVED it. wub.gif I don't usually like Nora Roberts books, but somehow, these were good. They are a little graphic in terms of sexual content, but not too bad. Each book (Born in Fire, Born in Ice, and Born in Shame) is about a different Concannon sister and how they find their way to true love and happiness. I really like how she keeps the characters' personalities consistent throughout the trilogy and that they only change in appropriate ways (through growth and development). It's kind of refreshing that the characters don't just change in the middle and you go "Say WHAT?"

I also love Tamora Pierce's books! biggrin.gif I like all of her Tortall books, not just the Protector of the Small series. Although I do have a special fondness for Keladry.

The Enchanted Forest series is awesome, too. I loved the whole idea in the first book of that happening. laugh.gif

I have to say I do read a lot, and that being the case I have lots of favorites!

I guess I should start off by saying that the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer is an extraordinary work of literature. Her other works include The Host, which is sci-fi type of story, which I also enjoyed reading.

I also enjoy reading the classics, which consist of the Jane Austen works, Charles Dickens, and Emily Brontė, amongst others. I was thrown into classics when PBS started showing Jane Austen. I loved the Northanger Abbey "movie", and believe that JJ Field was an amazing Tilney. Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensiblity, and Persuasion are some of my other favorites. If you get a chance, I would strongly advise you to read them.

Like hot-for-harry said, Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a great series, and I would suggest it to anyone, if you want a good book about Greek mythology, or just a book to read on a rainy day.

faz
It would take all day to list all the books I've enjoyed, but apart form HP of course, my favourite has to be the Pellinor series by Alison Croggon.

Aside form that I love anything fantasy/mythology based. Anyone got any reccomendations?
Sinsdaemn
sleep.gif Same here Eisa, although I can't believe I forgot to mention Terrier (the 2nd book should be coming out soon), Alanna, Circle of Magic, Verilidaine (sp?), and well, there's so much more.

Hmm..Nora Roberts....I was very much into Dance Upon the Air and her Drake sisters series. Just waiting for Jolie's story.

And Rick Riordan is a gifted storyteller. My brother in elementary and sister in middle school got sucked into books because of him. ^_____^ Percy Jackson is a true marvel.

Well, I just finished reading Graceling and it's right up there with Keturah. It's fantasy based and I would recommend it to anyone.

Here's a Short Summary:

In a world of 7 kings there are those who are Graced with a Gift. Once their eyes settle on two different colors (a green eye, and a black eye for example) one only has to wait for their special ability to emerge.

Sometimes these are harmless things, like being able to swim like a fish in the sea, or holding one's breath for a long time.

In Katsa's case however, it is deadly. Graced with Killing she is a lethal weapon, which her uncle takes full advantage of. Yet Katsa longs to become free and master of her own fate, instead of an executioner for petty problems.

I am really bad at summaries.

Am reading Fly by Night. Certainly colorful so far.

I happen to love "The Society of S," its awesomely great! I know alot of people on VTM including myself despise vampires becuase of "Twilight." Well This book is so good, the vampires do not GLITTER! Its about an girl who doesn't know she is a vampire. Well its kinda hard to explain so I will leave it up to you to read the book or not. Then you will understand.

I have a couple more books to add to my fav list... Angels and Demons and Tex. Angels and Demons was so amazing, I thought I had it down, but something new would be revealed and I would have to completely revise my predictions. Tex is another S.E. Hinton book and I thought Tex and Mace were just awesome characters.

Some books that I've come to love because school teachers assign it are the following:
-The Great Gatsby
-Night by Elise Weisel
-In Cold Blood by Truman Capote.

Great books and I recommend (:

My fav books are:

The HP series obviously!!
The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini
Fire Bringer, The Sight and Fell by David Clement-Davies
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman

Other than HP, I especially enjoy The Inheritance Cycle, as I love anything to do with dragons and magic!!! And I like how Christopher writes as well.

I just read a book called Three Cups of Tea: One Mans Journey to Change the World One Child at a Time. It is a very inspirational and moving book about a man named Greg Mortenson. He went to climb the second highest mountain in the world: K2. He got lost on the way back down and was helped by a man from a village in Afghanistan. While he was there, he asked about schools there, and saw that they really didn't have a proper one so he promised the chief, Haji Ali, that he would build them a school. He went back to the US and tried to raise all the money he could while sleeping in the back of his car. He is a true American hero who helped those he didn't know.

Definitely read this book. I have to warn you that this is sad though.

I'm a fan of older writers... F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allen Poe, Mark Twain, Henry David Thoreau, etc.
But I'm also in love the works of Sarah Dessen, Ellen Hopkins, Herbie Brenan, and Stephanie Meyer.
And of course J. K. Rowling!
I'm more of an author person. Like, I look for books by authors I know, not by what looks interesting.
East of Eden by John Steinbeck is probably one the best books I've ever read. To A God Unknown is probably my other favorite of his, and The Grapes of Wrath.

I saw someone mention a few posts (and a few months =D) ago that s/he reads the Luxe series by Anna Godberson...I love that series! It's amazing =)

-Just After Sunset, Stephen King
-Everything's Eventual, Stephen King
-Misery, Stephen King

And I just finished the Notebook, which I thought was absolutely amazing.(:

My most recent find is Th1rteen R3asons Why by Jay Asher. Its an amazing book, very sad, but great just the same. It really speaks to you, m best friend pretty much forced me to read it and I don't regret it one bit.

This is the summary I found on the web page for it:

Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker--his classmate and crush--who committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out how he made the list.

Through Hannah and Clay's dual narratives, debut author Jay Asher weaves an intricate and heartrending story of confusion and desperation that will deeply affect teen readers.

I have just finished reading The Time Travelers Wife which comes out in movie form in a few weeks time.

Oh my, what a fab story. The basics outline is that Henry has a quirk in his genes that when triggered by stress, make him jump time since the age of 5. At the age of 28 (in his real time) he meets a girl called Clare aged 20 who apparently already knows him. Clare first meets Henry when she is six year old and he is 36, hence why the real time him doesn't know the 20 year old Clare. The book tells the story of their life together and how she copes with his sudden disappearences. Henry's determination to find a cure with the help of a genetisist is heart breaking.

Although this is primarily a love story, it is in no way slushy but has really touching moments especially with Clare as a child. There is some sexual language used in this book, but I'd still recommend it to anyone over the age of 15.
UnknownLocket
Wow, just reading your description of the book The Time Traveler's Wife has me confused already. But the movie looks very interesting so maybe I will read the book before I watch the movie. But who knows, I said the same thing about the Notebook but well... I still haven't read that book yet happy.gif

I'm such a book junkie so my list of favorites is way too long to recite. Basically, every book that I pick up becomes an instant favorite, even the ones I'm forced to read in english literature. But anyways, I very recently got into this author named Brad Meltzer. His books are amazing! They usually deal with the government or big time professionals and different plots, schemes, and conspiracies. So far he only has seven books out, and his storylines are always very well thought out or researched. Almost every job detailed in the books are jobs that he once worked so the details are incredible! The Tenth Justice, Dead Even, The First Counsel, The Millionaires, The Zero Game, The Book of Fate, The Book of Lies They are all great reads, full of suspense and mystery. Just amazing!

The second best series ive read is the Inheritance Cycle by Paolini. This is an amazingly well written series and it dosent disappoint. The third best series is the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer. this is a very thrilling series. I been hooked on them since they first came out. I highly recommend both.

Hahaha...actually reading back what I have written, so am I!!!

I am a fan of Jodie Picoult who wrote My Sister's Keeper. I have a book on my shelf called Nineteen Minutes about a 17 year old boy who one day, fed up with being bullied walked into his school and shot 10 fellow students. The story is from the point of view of his mother in the aftermath. I'll let you know what it's like when I've read it!

I love books! HP series is one of my favorites but I also like the Twilight Saga. I think my second favorite group of books is the Sevenwaters Trilogy starting with Daughter of the Forest, then Son of the Shadows, and Child of the Prophecy. I liked the first two a lot more than the last though. They have a beautiful story line mixed with action and love.
I also like My Sister's Keeper, the Anne books, Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Shack, and others that I can't remember.
The Time Traveler's Wife sounds really good! That will have to be the next one I buy.
alkisti
Elaine, this book sounds very interesting. I haven't read My sister's keeper, but I am going to watch the movie, and then maybe look for the book. I love those stories!
It kind of reminds me of "Thirteen reasons why". Someone in here had recommended it, and I absolutely loved it. To think that we can avoid suicide and such. unsure.gif

I just finished reading Bridget Jones Diary, the first one. Is it okay to say that I liked the movie better? I thought it wasn't very...coherent. Maybe I've watched the movie so many times that I can't appreciate the book? Not sure. Of course, there have been many changes, but the movie adaptation was very good. I lol'ed at the fact they actually used Colin Firth for Mark Darcy, after mentioning in the book that he played Mr. Darcy in BBC's Pride and Prejudice. laugh.gif

Me too. I wish that they had cast Hugh Grant as the Muggle Prime Minister in HBP, for the same reason. It would have been a nice nod to "Love Actually", particularly as Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson were in it as well.

At the moment I have four books on the go. I'm rereading Harry Potter (again). I'm about two-thirds of the way through Goblet of Fire. I'm also rereading the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb, which I fell in love with four or five years back. My flatmate nagged me into starting on "Nation" by Terry Pratchett, and it is, unsurprisingly, hilarious. Finally I'm reading "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell" by Susanna Clarke. I'm still unsure whether or not I like it, as I've got real issues with the main characters, so I keep putting it aside and coming back to it after reading something else.

I just read the mortal instrument series. I have to admit after the first book I was angry and almost gave up on the series. My sister pushed me to read the last two and I am so glad that I did. This series was fantastic, the author cassandra clare takes you into a whole other world and it is a easy read which is sometimes nice to have. Great series to read!!!!

i love HP (obviously), twilight's not horrible (HP is just amazingly better by a million-trillion), my sister's keeper is a great book, so is before i go (sorry, i don't remember any authors), the uglies series by scott westerfeld is really good too, i just finished re-reading it, also, i'm an animal lover so i love all those animal biographies out there, like christian the lion and wesley the owl, also, 13 little blue envelopes is a good story, and cross my heart and hope to die is another, the lion, witch and the warobe is another good series, i read artemis fowl too, and i liked them
haha, i think my list is getting too long, so i'll stop now(:

How about Agatha Christie? Anyone like her? I find her books to be very intriguing although sometimes the way Hercule Poirot, the lead detective, gets to his conclusions are so incredulous it's like wow, who would think of that! even though he always seems to arrive to his conclusions so logically. What I really love though is that her books have a real element of surprise to them. You never really know who the murderer is until the explanations are out. I've tried and guessed several times as to who the killer would be but I have never been right yet.

I know! I always have the same feeling myself! I don't know how his (or her actually) mind works, but it doesn't go from A to B!

I really like Agatha Christie! I've read a few of her stories, and I always admire her writing style and the crimes she comes up with. She's definitely a master of her genre. smile.gif

Anyways, I just finished reading Princess Diaries series, all 10 of them. (I know there are 7 more but I can't find them, and I'm not really interested in them) You know I liked the first three a lot. But the rest were...argh! They should be called "Mia obsessing about her boyfriend's prom", "Mia obsessing about her boyfriend going to Japan", "Mia obsessing about not having money" blah-blah. So tiring!

I've come to the conclusion that I really don't appreciate romantic series. I actually don't appreciate any series other than Harry Potter. Why drag a story, ruin the characters and the readers' fun? dry.gif
HPnerd_0512
I just finished reading "Hades' Daughter" by Sarah Douglass, an Australian fantasy writer. This is the first in her "Troy Game" series and it was amazing! I read the fourth one, "Druid's Sword", a couple of months ago, and I really enjoyed, but it was a bad idea as I had to stop every ten or so pages and make my flatmate explain the backstory, as it is so complex.

Anyway, having now read the first one I can officially say that I am a fan! I was up til three in the morning reading this, it was so addictive. There were a couple of bits that squicked me out, including a particularly violent miscarriage, but otherwise the series is great.

The only problem is, I really hate all of the main characters! It's like "Gone With The Wind", an amazing story, but sometimes you just want to shake them and tell them all to stop being such idiots.

That said, I definitely recommend them.

I really love the inheritance saga by Christopher Paolini. He's similair to JKR in the fact that he's really created an in-depth different world. Can't wait for the fourth and final book to come out (: Eragon >> Eldest >> Brisingr >> ______
Love them (: Not as much as HP of course wink.gif

I just finished a really good one called Cracked Up to Be by Courtney Summers. It is the story of a girl who once was poised to be valedictorian, cheerleading captain, most popular girl in the school, and girlfriend of the most popular guy of the school. However, she did something and started showing up to school drunk, broke up with her boyfriend, quit cheerleading, started failing her classes, and cut social ties. Little by little you learn about her past, what she did, and it's a very hard book to put down.

I agree. Most series that I've read besides the Unfortunate Events series and Harry Potter can either just be one book, or several separate books with different character names. Too many times they drag the series on forever with some of the most boring and unusual plot twists.

This actually sounds very interesting. At first I was like oh wow, a story about someon'e life who is perfect. But then I kept reading through your description and it really started to become more interesting so I think I may look and see if I can find the book since I'm looking for a new book to read now just before school starts. happy.gif

I just finished reading Twilight for the first time! It was actually better than I thought it was gonna be. I used to hate the series because everyone was comparing it to Harry Potter and claiming it was better, but it wasn't that bad. I really enjoyed it, although I still can't understand the crazed obsession everyone seems to have with it. I guess I still need to read the rest of the series to find out.

Oh, I love books!
I read tons of books and even if I don't like them I will just keep reading, hoping that it will get better. Sometimes it does and sometimes I just end up thinking, 'Wow, that was a serious waste of my time.' smile.gif Some of the books I've really gotten hooked to are..

- Twilight (now I have been having second thoughts, was it really that good?)
- The Clique series (Ehmagawd, AH-MAZING!)
- Double Identity by Margarete Peterson Haddix (read it!)

I only put three because I am very picky. I chose Twilight because when I read it, I will be honest, I was completely hooked.. not so much anymore that I have been reading better books. The Clique series is seriously brilliant. The author, Lisi Harrison is so funny! The books are so well written and I have actually started laughing uncontrollably while reading. I am hooked. Double Identity is a book that I actually risked myself throwing up on a plane to Australia just to read it. Seriously.. I just couldn't help myself! I had to read it!!

I won't rant anymore... tongue.gif

That Cracked Up to Be (by Courtney Summers) book is starting to go all around my school. My best friend is reading it right now, and then there is a huge waiting list behind her. I think I'm going to get another copy because I'm not going to get it back forever and I really want to read it. The main character Parker is hilarious, my best friend and I always laugh at the mean things she says (as terrible as that sounds).

When “Perfect” Parker Fadley starts drinking at school and failing her classes, all of St. Peter’s High goes on alert. How has the cheerleading captain, girlfriend of the most popular guy in school, consummate teacher’s pet, and future valedictorian fallen so far from grace?

Parker doesn’t want to talk about it. She’d just like to be left alone, to disappear, to be ignored. But her parents have placed her on suicide watch and her counselors are demanding the truth. Worse, there’s a nice guy falling in love with her and he’s making her feel things again when she’d really rather not be feeling anything at all.

Nobody would have guessed she’d turn out like this. But nobody knows the truth.

Something horrible has happened, and it just might be her fault.

Just a warning this book is not appropriate unless you're at least in high school... explicit language and some sexual themes are present in this book.

Cracked Up to Be (by Courtney Summers), sounds like a pretty good book. I might give it a try. There are a few books that I've read that I absolutely LOVE!

First would The Reader By Bernhard Schlink.

I was so excited when they made this book a movie! I read this book about 10 or 11 years ago and I loved it!

House By Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker. This book is pretty good. I heard it was being made into a movie too, but that was a while ago and I haven't heard anything else. It might be out and I don't even know about it. But it's good!

The Wednesday Letters is awesome! This book is by Jason F. Wright. Whenever I have kids I would recommend them reading this for sure. It was on the New York Times Best Seller List. It's a love story with a bit of humor and suspense. It's just really really good!

Dracula By Bram Stoker is a classic...nothing needs to be said about that.

And finally...Why Do Men Have Nipples...By Mark Leyner and Billy Goldberg, M.D. This book is basically about Hundreds of question you'd only ask a doctor after your third martini. It's very interesting. I found myself saying...OMG...Really...an awful lot! HAHA

So that's all the books I can think of for right now. I'll have to check my library for more. wink.gif

Dawn I LOVE books!!

Hearing what the book Cracked Up to Be is about reminds me of the book I recently read called A Solitary Secret by Patricia Hermes. It's pretty brutal, too, because the narrator is a nameless 14-year-old girl who's an incest victim. It's all in her point of view, like she's writing it down in her journal, and it's all about how her father starts molesting her. sad.gif It's really sad, and it's also really brutal because the language and emotions aren't sugar-coated, it really gets into her mind and the conflicting emotions she feels.

I just love books too. It's soooo hard to pick but one of them would probably be The Giver!

You guys/gals should read it to!
