Me, as a really insentimental person, don't really cry in much movies. The only movie I cried on was the 'Little Princess' when Sara's dad remembered that Sara was his daughter and hugged her in the rain.
Have you cried in a movie?

You name the movie I've cried!! When Harry and Ron made up in GoF, when Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy got together in Pride and Prejudice, when Will Smith defeated the aliens in Independence Day... I'm a sucker for a happy ending!!!

I'm the same! I don't know why, I think I'm just a hopeless romantic or feel a great sense of empathy even though they are fictional. As movies is one of my addictions, I get so easily invested with the story, especially if it includes closed captioning (I'm hearing impaired) and it just records every single sound e.g. *sigh* or *breaking voice* and I just get very caught up with it. It is quite embarrassing actually - when I'm with friends or family, I start bubbling in happiness or sadness...sigh, I'm getting emotional just by thinking about the movies.
I can't honestly think which movie I did not cry - I mean, I even had a little tear in X-Men 3! I adore Pride and Prejudice (the current version) and the special features of the alternative ending had me sobbing for couple of minutes...

Is there an answer on why people get emotional about movies and others don't?

I don't know why some people cry at movies and others don't, but I can say this, I don't remember being this emotional when I was in my teens or before I had children for that matter. Even my husband has a cry now and then and he used to be so 'hard'. So maybe its an age thing or even hereditary. But it is definately not a girl thing.By the way I cried in the new Pride and Prejudice as well as the old Colin Firth series.

Going to GoF, I didn't cry but I have to admit that I was very moved by the scene of Harry's return to the maze with Cedric's body. That was truly heart-wrenching. The cheers that turned into silence and then cries. Cedric's father edging forward -- "That's my boy!" -- and taking up his lifeless son. All around me people had started crying. I wondered how many of them had read the book and been prepared (in a fashion) for Cedric's death.
The second time I went, the atmosphere was different. Perhaps everyone had seen it before? Getting to the same heart-wrenching scenes, I was as moved as before, but nobody cried.

I have cried in many movies like Harry Potter, Raise Your Voice, Pride and Prejudice, Little Princess, Secret Garden and heaps of other movies. I cry in a lot of romances because the happy or tragic endings are always worth a tear or two.
I think crying adds feeling in the movie because you understand what is going on and are more sesitive than someone who doesn't cry.

There is only one film that has ever made me cry and it does so every time that I see it - Schindler's List. The very end of the film, where the survivors, along with the actors who portrayed them, pass by his grave and place a stone on it which is the Jewish equivalent of placing flowers on a grave. This moment never fails to start me off.

i have never cried at a movie. but when i was watching a movie called 'Click', it made me want to cry. i know, kind of weird for those who have only seen the preview and not the movie, but whoever cries during movies might cry at this one. harry potter & the prisoner of azkaban made me a bit sad and so did harry potter & the goblet of fire. but i have never really cried at a movie!

i've cried in a couple of movies, but not that many times as some other people... i think the movies i cried when i watched was a little princess, a walk to remember (only the first time), cheaper by the dozen ( i know i shouldn't have cried... but the whole family reunion made me cry), and some other movies that i don't remember... i get sad a lot of times, but unless it's really depressing, i usually don't cry when it comes to movies

Well...I never want to cry during movies, but I can't help it. When I was younger, I used to watch loads of movies, but I couldn't see why people would cry at them. Now that I'm older, I have cried at quite a few. Titanic was one, where they had their first kiss, an Indian movie called Chalte Chalte (opposites attract), because the girl was leaving the guy forever..yeah, the same old love story

. HP4 just made me sad, but not cry. Oh, but I did cry at the end of CoS when everyone was clapping for Hagrid.
Let's see...there was Conan the Destroyer (I think that's what it's called). I haven't seen the movie in ages, but I remember it mking me tear up in the end. Oh, and not just movies, but on the episode of SpongeBob, when he didn't want to come outside for fear of breaking his butt. When he sings that 'Indoors' song, that just has me blabbering! Seriously, I have no idea why, but I love his voice.

I cried when Harry was lying atop Cedric's dead body, after he took the portkey back. Hagrid and Mad Eye said Harry "Come with me," and he kept saying "NO,NO, NO," and his voice started to crack a bit, that's what got me, too.
The Notebook, and Brokeback mountain are also the only two other ones un-Harry Potter related that I cried in, they're just both so sad!

I've cryed in quiet a few movies, not as many as some, but quiet a few. The last few times I've wacthed SS when Harry says "I'm not going home, not really," I've teared up. And when he touches his shoulder to feel that Lily isn't there infornt of the mirror, I feel really sad and moved, but I don't cry. I think the ending of CoS is really chesey, so I don't cry...but I love the line "It's alright Ginny, it's over, it's just a memory," I don't know why but it moves me. When I first saw PoA, I cryed a lot because I just finished reading OotP, thinking of Sirius

. I still cry, but not as much as I did, when he touches Harry's heart. Of course GoF as well, the first time I saw it I didn't cry right when Cedric died, I strated when the dome was made and when we see James and Lily and I strated to sob when Lily say "Let go, sweetheart you're ready." I'm actually crying as I write this. And of course Amos crying when he sees is son is really moving as well.
Other than HP, I cry everytime I wacth Moulin Rouge, the Baz Lurhmann version of Romeo and Juliet, the third Star Wars...And when we wacthed that in my film class, almost everyone was crying. But I cryed in Rent as well, but when they layed Mimi down I said to my sister and cousin "that table always has crumbs on it," so I say some werid things durning serious sceens. I have also cryed during other movies as well.
Hermione_Resilda, I've been moved by eps of the Simpsons, never cryed though.

Jul 2 2006, 03:23 PM
I just remembered one movie that made me cry. It was "Allegro non Troppo", an animated film set to classicial pieces of music.
This film has been termed Europe's answer to Dinsy's Fantasia, but that's only because both are animated films set to classical music. I think of it as a brilliant piece of artwork in its own right, and in many ways better than Fantasia.
Now about the crying. The film has these six segments:
Claude Debussy (from "Prélude ŕ l'aprčs-midi d'un faune")
Antonín Dvorák (from "Slavian Dance")
Maurice Ravel (from "Bolero")
Jean Sibelius (from "Valse Triste")
Igor Stravinsky (from "The Firebird")
Antonio Vivaldi (from "Concert in C-Major")
The Valse Triste piece had me bawl my eyes out, and it does still make me cry every time I listen to that piece of music, every time I talk to someone about it and try to describe why, every time I think about it, and yep, even now.
So, why did it affect me so much? Not only me, but a lot of others? Because it tells a sad story through the eyes of a cat, because the images are so well timed to the music that it breaks your heart. Because it tells us of the uglier side of our society's pursuit of Progress. Because the cat in story is helpless and like us, unable to stem the tide or bring back all the things that we've lost.
Has anyone else here seen this film? Well, if you have, I can't imagine that you haven't been moved. And if you haven't, get a copy and watch it -- bt be warned, keep a box of tissues at hand.

I have cried in the following movies:
Edward Scissorhands- the ending becomes so beautiful, then it is messed up by someone, then by the very end it's so beautiful again.....makes me cry every time I watch it
Sleepy Hollow- I'm a sap for endings that are so sudden....
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest- I'm not gonna spoil anything, but the ending made me cry, even though there was some humor in there as well.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire- Thinking back as to the first time I saw it in the theater, I cried when Cedric's dad is crying over his son's corpse. When someone cries in a movie, I usually do so too.
Finding Neverland- I always have a lump in my throat as it ends because it's so sad.
I can't think of any more, but there probably are more.

SPOILER FOR PIRATES 2
I didn't cry at the end of the second Pirates, because I knew he can't really be dead, because he's in the thrid one, so...People die in these movies like in the X-files, everyone drops like fly, but then they pop up like daisys. Serious, no one ever died in X-files till the end, even if you're a wheel chair bound guy, and you get thrown down some steps. And I knew that Elizabeth was going to do that, halfway though the kiss, I dunno how, I just knew.
SPOILER FOR PIRATES 2 OVER
Finding Neverland is such a beautiful movie, I cryed as well.
You know, I just cryed like an hour ago to because of an ep of Sex and the City. And Uptown Girls, has anyone ever seen that?

It is ok to cry in a movie, Werewolf of Londen.
I cried at the end of the Notebook! It was so beautiful

The kind of movies I cry in, and I know I am going to cry in, are movies about mentally challeged people who struggle throughout the movie, and even though everyone is mean to them they are still good to the mean people. It just makes me cry

whenever I see them getting picked on.
I think I am going to cry in HBP and OotP, when Dumbledore dies and when Sirius dies. I didn't cry when I read it, but I felt really sad.

Sigh. I supposed it's high time I got myself in here to 'fess up. Sigh. The easier question for me would be: "What movie have you NOT cried in?" So, let me think. . .I definately cried in Harry Potter 4. . . (I can't remember if I've cried during the other three. . .pepperimp? you around? Have I cried at other Harry films??)
I cried, most recently, during (brace yourselves)
-"Pirates 2 (though not as much as I expected, and not at appropriate times. . .<ahem>
-"The Devil Wears Prada" (even though it was a completely stupid movie)
-"Suprman Returns"
-"X-men 3" (JEEAAANNN!!!)
-"Cars" (oh my word, I KNOW it's a kid's cartoon!)
Let's see. . .classics that I usually bawl my eyes out for:
-"Breakfast at Tiffany's"
-"Henry V"
-"Hamlet" (Specifically Branagh's version as he's not as obsessed with close-ups as Gibson)
-"Titanic"
-"Serenity" (well, it should be a stinking classic! WASH!!)
-"About a" freaking "Boy." (Why? No clue. . .something hit me)
"Lord of the Rings" (I was sad that I couldn't go on the boat. . .really. . .

)
Movies I shouldn't have cried in but did anyway so they wouldn't feel bad:
-"Terminator"
-"Terminator 2"
-"Italian Job"
-"Saving Private Ryan" (Oh, this one is okay to cry in, but I will NEVER see it again. I still ocassionally have nightmares from it)
-Anything Disney. . . stupid disney movies.
Okay, I'll stop for now before I embarrass myself. . .pretty much if it's been made and I've seen it; I've cried. I'm a pretty emotional person, and more often than not, I'll find one thing in a movie that strikes a certain chord-whether it be for the moment or forever-that will make the tears start flowing.

In Hamlet really, the Branagh verison, I feel like an awful person but I began to laugh when everyone died. But the movie got on my nerves and honestly when it ended I was just glad it was over. No movie should be over 4 hours long! I will say that I liked the end, it makes more sense than Fortinbras just popping up and saying, "Hey, I'm going to rule over all you now." But Shaskespeare is really hard to act, it's either over done, under done, or just right. Over done, you laugh when people die, under done, you fall alseep, just right is just right.
I'm honestly a pretty sentive person, I cryed when I read PoA when Harry half wanted to hear his parents vocie again, it's so heart-breaking.

I don't really cry a lot, but some movies just get you.
Well, the other day I was watching an episode of Monk and I know it was suppose to be a funny show, but I saw the episode when someone impersonated(sp?) his wife(who was murdered a few years before, and he started to have OCD) and he thought it was her and the way he was just made me want to cry. I didn't, but I got all teary eyed.

See, I could watch his version over and over again and not get bored. I love the way he interprets Shakespeare! (In all fairness, though, I've not watched his version of "Love's Labour's Lost" out of, well, sheer terror . . .) I don't even mind it's length! (Not that I have time to sit straight through it in one sitting, but I could make it through for Kenneth.)
Books make me cry all the time, too. . .even the stupid sappy ones. . .People who love manipulating emotions really do LOVE me. I give them the reaction they want! Even when my brain screams against the waterworks; my stupid eyes don't listen. Sigh.
The worst TV episode I cried during was, now don't laugh, an episode of XMen. .the dark phoenix saga. . .I said don't laugh!! I was in college, even! The stress of exams and the late night hours! I'm pretty sure it was that and not anything "real."

I cry every time I wacth the Baz Lurhmann of Romeo and Juliet, but I laughed during some serious parts when I wacthed the one from the 60s, I think the guy who plays Romeo is awful. But I've cried well reading it, and Othello. Hamlet really isn't my most favorite play of his plays, still love it, but not my favorite. What's wrong with Branagh's version of Love's Labour's Lost? I don't know anything about that play either.

Given Laurence Olivier was a better actor, but I don't see anything wrong with Mr. Branagh. He is the best Shakespearean actor of our day.

I think it had to do with the fact that it was 4 and a frickin half hours long. No movie ever should be that long! I mean he even included Shakespeare's plug for plays, which most people cut when they're acting it on stage. Some parts I did like a lot, like Hesston’s monolog, and when Hamlet breaks up with Ophelia, but as I've said before, Hamlet isn't even my favorite play, anyway...so...::shrug:: But I do think the thing with the thrown sword was way cheesy.
Padfoot08
Jul 18 2006, 07:39 PM
Well it was a bit long I agree with that.
However, It was a brilliant movie. It is my favorite play, so I am very protective of anything having to do with it. As for Shakespeare's plug for plays it was shown in the cinema not the playhouse therefore if they wanted to add it who cares.
Now a movie that wasn't the best for Branagh would be Much Ado About Nothing. I absolutely adore the witty play, but he screen adaptation didn't do it proper justice. I mean, Keanu Reeves? Come on.

Yeah, Shakespeare isn't an equal opportunity employer. I've never seen that because of that fact. But I think that that's why the plug shouldn't of been in there, because it's a movie. But I like Hamlet better than MacBeth, which I don't like much at all ::hides:: There's no one in the whole story that I feel is remotely relatable to anyone with a moral compass. I think that whole fate verse chocie is very interesting but still. That's always the hook for me, relatable characters.

Movies I cried/wept openly to:
Friday Night Lights-- I dont really recall the boys name, but Garrett Hedlund played the troubled kid, as his dad hit him a lot and they never got along, and then at the end, when they lose the championship game his dad hugs him and puts his chamionship ring on his sons finger and they just hugged and it was really touching.
4 Brothers--I wanted to see that movie just because of Garrett Hedlund, I admit it, but then I got really into the plot and all the brothers had something really emotional about them and I got attached to them all, and then when thier house was attacked and Jack was shot I cried. The water works started right there....and then the other brothers were trying to save him, it just was so tragic. I'm actually tearing up just thinking about it.
Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire: I knew it was coming. I read the book about a gazillion times and I knew it was going to happen, but when Wormtail killed Cedric, I pretty much lost it. And of course, Fluer had to scream when she saw him, and Danile Radcliffe can pull off a good emotional scene. "He's back..He's back" I couldnt take it anymore...Wept openly like there was no tomorrow.
X-Men 3: Just a little teary-eyed when Wolverine killed Jean.(sp?) They were completely meant for each other and he had to...it was so sad.
Tru Confessions: I couldnt even believe that was a Disney movie. Shia did an amazing job playing a boy with a mental handicap. After watching Even Stevens and then seeing that movie, it was like a completely different person. I cried though. Thats how great he was.
