Is Aunt Petunia a Squib?
Good question. No, she is not, but—[Laughter]. No, she is not a Squib. She is a Muggle, but—[Laughter]. You will have to read the other books. You might have got the impression that there is a little bit more to Aunt Petunia than meets the eye, and you will find out what it is. She is not a squib, although that is a very good guess. Oh, I am giving a lot away here. I am being shockingly indiscreet. |
This is from JK's interview at the Edinburgh Book Festival.
Jk says there is more to Aunt Petunia then meets the eye. What do you think it is?

Could she be....a witch who denied it? Or....or she has latent powers that she...oh I dunno, I'm sleepy...
But yeah, that intregued me greatly also...
Oooohhh, do you think she maybe got expelled from Hogwarts for some reason and has been bitter ever since?!?!?

Oh yeah. Maybe. She was mad at Lily because she finished school and she didn't. In OotP when Dumbledore sends the Howler 'Remember My Last' it's like she knows him or something. It can't be just from the letter he wrote to them when he put Harry on their doorstep. Something is very fishy. She isn't telling the whole truth to Vernon. How does she know what dementors are? Unless she went to school. Hmm.. She said Lily talked about them but that can't be it.

Yeah Dementors are hardly over-the-dinner-table chat subjects, are they?
But it's more what JKR said...that she's not a squib....she's a muggle....but there seems to be like this massive BUT about it...
I mean, as much as anything else, what on earth would lead her to be so so very anti-magic? It can't have been the way she was raised, her parents were so proud of Lily...and of course it could easily be jealousy....but that's a mighty ENORMOUS grudge to hold, so so many years later, against your dead sister, just because she had a talent that she didn't...
Hmmm...

Who's older? Lily or Petunia because if Lily was then maybe at first Petunia was jealous because Lily was a witch and she wasn't and then later she got her letter. She didn't know at that time that she was a witch. Hmm..

well, i don't think she can be a witch. muggles are non-magic people, no? so she's just your ordinary muggle. although, she could have studied some magic in the past, not doing magic (jealous that her sister could so something so cool). she could have been the target of some magic prank, or voldemort could have tortured her for the information of her sister. <--reason why she hates magic now. hmmm, rowling could be hinting that some subplot that she's writing? probably, but i can be wrong.

Maybe Lily's sacrifice for Harry not only worked on him... maybe when she died, Lily passed on certain powers to her sister as well?
It could be that Petunia wanted desperately to go to Hogwarts, and spied on her sister and all her sisters conversations to try to learn what she could... (similar to her spying on the neighbours now that her sister has gone)... but outwardly shunned the magical world, because she knew that she didn't belong and was extremely bitter because of it (like Filch).
I think that Petunia has some powers, but I'm not totally certain that she knows she has them yet... I figure that they'll come into use whenever there is great need, and she might not even realize what has happend. But then again... maybe she does?

Ooh, that's a good idea, severus! Nice one...yeah...I can see that sort of happening...can you choose to be Muggle, even though you have latent witch powers? Mmm...
Although, to be honest with you, I don't see anything particularly wierd about Petunia knowing about Dementors...she said that she overheard HIM (namely James) telling Lily about them...she was probably spying on her sister and her boyfriend, listening on the stairwell, you know? Which is the sort of thing that younger sister's do...which makes me thing that maybe Petunia was younger than Lily. Not by much, maybe....
Although they could have been non-identical twins, ya know....I don't think it's ever been said anywhere that they couldn't be. That would go a long way towards explaining Petunia's jealousy....I mean, she obviously is jealous of her sister, but of what exactly? Of the fact that she was a witch? Or the fact that she thought her parents thought more about Lily than they did about her? Or because Lily found James maybe....do you think it's possible that maybe Petunia once had a thing for James herself? I suppose there are many reasons....
I wouldn't have thought that Petunia ever attended Hogwarts though....not after she went on about how her parents reacted when Lily got her letter...she would have said something then about missed opportunities or something, wouldn't she?

I dont know, lol, humm. Maybe they were twins, it never said they werent. I still dont think Petunia has any magic what so ever though. Or maybe she had a little, and really did hate it, who knows? 0_0

I agree with doomed_renascence that Aunt Petunia was probably subject to some prank based on magic. She only talks about her sister twice right? Once in the Sorcerer's Stone and later when Dudley confronts a dementor. Was Aunt Petunia married to Vernon when James and Lily married? Maybe James and Lily stayed at the home of Lily's parents when Petunia was still there. Or Petunia could've lived with Lily and James and heard all about the magic.
Maybe Petunia is only faking she hated all the magic. Maybe at first she was interested and Lily would talk about it with her.
It's such a strange circumstance-having one muggle in the family go do magic. Think about it. Colin Creevy and his brother Dennis. Rowling's original idea to have Hermione's sister didn't work. Rowling no longer had a muggle sister and Hermione being a witch. So the theory that Petunia's acceptance to Hogwarts, but Petunia shunning it is possible.

I don't think she's a witch or a twin...I really don't know what to think. I hadn't even read that. I really should look at her site and stuff more often. Um, maybe she is...grrr...I dunno, maybe she just wanted to be a witch and was upset that Lily was and she wasn't. Something like that.

okay, this is my first post and a bit off the wall because I have no proof of this whatsoever, but... this is only my theory about aunt petunia because it's clear that there's more to her than meet the eye and i can't think of anything else. i thought maybe she might be secret-keeper for harry's location. the ministry and the order may have pieces of paper on file writen by her that say where harry is so they know and no one else does unless she tells them. we know she's not a squib or witch, secret-keeper was the only other thing i could think of. just thought i'd share that.

Well hi there, Melodic! Welcome to the forums!! Hope you have a great time here as we all do! And you're off to a cracking start, that's quite a good theory actually! I've never considered that before....Mmm.....I guess it's possible, isn't it?
But, then again, the Weasley boys knew where to find Harry when they rescued him in CoS, didn't they? So they must have been told where he was living....and the Hogwarts letters all go there....
Ooh...hang on....it's possible that maybe Umbridge doesn't know exactly where Harry was living though, I suppose, because she just sent the Dementors to Little Whinging in OotP, didn't she? They didn't appear exactly at Harry's front door. Plus it's entirely possible that the Weasley's would have been trusted with Harry's location because they were all in the original Order, weren't they? (Well, not the kids, but Molly and Arthur were). And, of course, Mcgonagall (who sends the letters) would certainly be trusted with his location!
Mmm....I'm going to have to think a bit further on this one! I really like that idea......
Good one!
