Why were Unforgivable Curses made if you weren't allowed to use them? That is just silly. Why would you have something you can't use, and if you do you get thrown in jail? I mean c`mon what is up with that?

Fawkes
Albus Dumbledore
Well Fawkes, the wizarding world, as in our world is made up of a variety of people. These people are mostly good, but you get the occasional bad ones who do bad things. In our world we have drugs which are illegal, but people still make them and use them regularly. I think you would get a sufficient answer for your question by changing some words and asking a person who is involved with illegal drugs: "why were drugs created if you werent allowed to use them" Another thing, those who dubbed them Unforgiveable and punishable by law are not those who created it.
Spencer Potter
Also...... In this world if we created bombs and dropped them we'd land in Jail, World is full of bad people like the wizarding world. So yah.

well i guess some Wizards and witches can like Aurors or Hit wizards like when they are after a dark Wizard and they will not stop killing people now come one if i were and Auror and i needed to protect other wizards and witches then i would use the Unforgivable Curses if nothing else will even hurt them then yeah i would use them but they are like bombs or like guns some people can use guns with out getting sent to jail such as Police men they use them if the bad guy will not go down then they shot them. just like Aurors if the dark wizard or witch will not go down then use a Unforgivable Curse.

Im guessing that a bad curses like these were once meant to save lives instead of take them away, kinda like the atomic bomb was meant to save american lives, but now if it was used it would be used as a terrorist weapon so to speak, so maybe aurors made them to protect innocent lives, or maybe they were made for war like guns, but when war is over you still have all they extra guns, well in this case you still have the curses and now they are being used against innocent lives.

I'm assuming a 'dark' wizard created the unforgiveable curses and tuahg them to their followers. I'm not necessarily saying Voldemort created them, however he could have, but I'm assuming some dark wizard did. We know that Snape was able to create his own spells when he was still in school, - ex. sectumsempra, langlock, etc. Therefore, I don't think it would be a great feat for a powerful dark wizard to be able to create evil dark curses such as avada kedavra and the others. They probably only became deemed 'unforgiveable curses' after they became well known and were being used againt many, many people. But I don't believe that the minstry or anyone like that came up with the cruses, I believe it was a dark wizard, perhaps Voldemort, or maybe even grindlewald... and taught them to those they thought were worthy of knowing them.

I think that thery were made all by the bad wizards to do bad things and then all the good wizards found out about them and used them for good but the people at the MoM made them punishable because most good wizards dont use them anymore.
paige-potter
i think it was dark wizards who created the curses personaly but i can see where your all coming from biggrin.gif
third year kungfc
biggrin.gif i agree with paige - potter.

I mean snape created "sectumsempra" didnt he? and that was labelled (correct me if im mistaken) "for enemies"

So these curses MAY have been created to be much weaker and maybe as a prank, but personally i think they were created by evil to do the wizards/witches bidding....

There should also be good curses only to be used by those who can love though right? I think there is... What was that curse about that dumbledore used and it made a chilling note on voldemorts shield but did not damage it in ootp?

What does everyone else think?

jarn
The unforgiveable curses were invented by Grindewald, who Dumbledore triumphed over in 1945...

After the Burial
Where have you ever heard that Jarn? I thought that all the Unforgiveable Curses were much older than that. If Grindewald invented them, I can see why Dumbledore's defeat of him would be cause for a chocolate frog card.
Nimbus
I was under the impression that spells, jinxes, hexes, curses, etc were more discovered, not made. A witch or wizard can't really make a spell can they? I don't think we've been given any evidence that they can anyway. It was probably something more along the lines of a wizard wanted a way to control people, studied magical theory and found a solution with the discovery of the imperius curse. The same can probably be said for the AK and the torture curse.

Just my opinion.
Spencer Potter
Well I think the Unforgiveable curses were made by ''Dark Wizards'' used them but then they got outlawed, like.. uhmm I have no idea what rule in the world was legal, but now illegal. Oh yah, here in small town Chilliwack there are no fireworks because some arrogant people were putting them in places they are not supposed to be like( like dogs buts and tail pipes for cars ). But thats probably why they are Unforgivable and are Illegal to use now.
twiggysun
we don't know how long the unforgivable curses are illegal yet... maybe they were legal at some point, but then somebody decided that they were to awful and madse them illegal... there's lots of things like that in our world to, like the possesion of guns and stuff...
jiggery-pokery
I’m not sure, but I assume they were made by “evil do-ers” as to punish those who are not trustworthy to them. I could see someone like Umbridge making them smile.gif (remember in her office when she was about to use the Cruciatus on Harry?!). I agree it’s a bit weird that they were invented for people to get thrown in jail. A bit sketchy.
Years of exile
i think it depends which unforgivable curse we take into account.

the killing curse for example was probably never "allowed" as such however there probably were uses for it e.g. in extreme cases of law enfoursment.

the crutasioous curse was again probably never supposed to be used hoever id expect that it could have been used by the miisrty and other to gain info from enimys

how ever i think that the impirius curse was bounced around for ages before anyone really understood how dangerous it is.

i would say that all of the spells were invented way befor the time when whats wrong and right were put into laws and rules.

id say it probably wasnt just bad or dark wizards/witches who made them i think that they could also have been created by some normal joe or someone good but just fell into the wrong hands. for example the first person who turned opium into heroin probably wasnt evil, the were probably just trying to find a cure for a horrible disease or something and i think the same thang could apply to the unforgivavble curses.

yes years of exile i believe that the curses were never acvcually alllowed or considered good but they would have their uses. If you think of evil Muggle rulers like HItler and the guy from uganda that Forrest Witeker portrayedm heck even bush these spell represent the fact that these curces represent what those people did. Killed innocent people Adaver KAdavre, touture (guantonmo- even though we wont say tourcure so it is excessive interigation tackics) impirious curse is alot like creating a mole inside an orginaztion.
Dugiefrsh08
i think that who ever made the curses intended to use them witch i do belive l.v. made them thought i can not refrence itright now he says sumthing to the extent of he can make people do what he wants hurt people when he wants ....... this was in one of the memorys harry and d.d. were in and even if he didnt make them im pretty sure any wizard can make a hex or a jynx or a spell i mean snape made all those in the advance potions book did he not?

Fawkes

In a way, this is a little like the question, "why was foul language invented if you're not supposed to use it?" I know it doesn't land you in jail, but you're still not supposed to do it. Perhaps a better analogy would be the fact that (in most countries) you're not supposed to kill people, yet certain people will create weapons in order to do just that, in spite of the fact that using them could (and probably will) mean they end up in prison.

Unforgiveable Curses are there because with good comes evil. If there was no God (not to start a religious debate, because they suck, and please don't after this post), there would not be a Satan or a Hell without a Heaven.
xForeverxLoyalxToxDumbledorex
personally i think the curses were the work of dark evil wizards
i mean snape created sectumsempra
so it could have been done with all those
ad then the ministry just named them as evil curses and made them against the law
i doubt the ministry wud have created them

Oew that's a nice theory! I didn't know Snape did, was it in the half blood prince? I forget those things very easy..

This is quite similar to the other question on the forums - 'who made them?' and I think they are related - probably a dark wizard (Grindelwald or Slytherin maybe) created these spells, without Ministry approval, and in Voldemort's first rein (L/J era) they probably became popular due to many of Voldemort's followers using them, just like when Snape created the Levicorpus one.

OR

Maybe in the old wizard times the Ministry were more lenient with spells th they are now, so they may have created them to attack muggles or something, cos it could have been darker times back then - maybe there used to be another Lord Voldemort as Minister for Magic!
