What about "in college right now" biggrin.gif

Just remember that you can always change your major if you find that its not what you thought it was, or you don't particularly enjoy it. The statistics now say that people change their major, on average, five times.

Right now, I'm going to Arizona State, second year! I moved from Louisiana with my family and I was accepted there, so I decided to go there and live with my family (could've gone to the University of New Orleans, but it was a good thing I didn't but a month later the city was flooded)! I started out in architecture, but found that it wasn't my thing. I'm more into planning, science behind geographic...things (entities, or what have you), sustainability, all that stuff, so I found Urban Planning to be more of a fit for me...likewise, architecture as it appeared to me to be a lot of work for little pay...but I guess I could be wrong laugh.gif

I plan on mastering in Environmental Planning, and going for another degree in geography (with a certificate in GIS)! Sounds crazy, and it'll be another 7 years or so in college to get all that done!

Something that will really help you plan your schedule is ratemyprofessor.com. There, it'll have what other people think about a professor and how the class went (though sometimes its best to find out for yourself, and other times you don't have a choice as to who teaches you). If you're still in high school, explore your options and find a college that fits you...a place you feel comfortable at...as my uncle told me "you're a paying customer, if you don't like the service you can take your money elsewhere". Sad, though, that its come down to us being called customers rather than students laugh.gif

I plan to go to college away from home. I already have a list of my first choices!

1)Juliard
2)BYU Idaho
3)BYU Utah
4)LSU

Thats pretty much it... I live in CA right now, but we just moved there from MT...So, if i can, i want to go some where on the east coast...but...if possable (but VERY unlikely...) i want to get out of the country.
HPFan792
Sorry El Barto for not putting in college right now.Well i enjoy reading what you guys have to say about college.I want to go away to college i think it will be the best thing for me.I don't know where i want to go yet but, i am starting to think about it now.You guys are very helpful.Hope to hear from more of you. biggrin.gif
ILoveHarryPotter07
I want to go to college because (no offence to those of you who don't want to go to college) people who do get better jobs. Also I think that it would be good to further my education into somthing that I really enjoy. I have some colleges picked out that I want to go to even though Im only a softmore. I would love to go to JWU or RISD somewhere kinda local but not to the point where I have to live at home lol. As for jobs my mind is set on like 3 different things lol. So we will have to see..chef,actress,author lol.

I went to university as an adult. It was interesting. Most of the other students didn't know I was a mom and all that. smile.gif It was a nice time, sharing the table with my son at night as we did our homework. biggrin.gif

I didn't finish. I was only 25 credits short, but it didn't matter. I wasn't doing too well emotionally and so I fell away from it. The good thing was, I run my own business now and I love it! Though I miss studying history and German. I took some theatre classes but couldn't believe what a total waste of time they were. Why anyone would go to college for theatre is beyond me--just go out there and do it!

I did like the university atmosphere though, because it's a lot freer--there's more of an exchange of ideas. And you can lose that label you may have had from high school--you have more freedom to be who you really are!

I'd suggest that if you go, though, you should definitely stay in a dorm the first year at least. University life is such an adjustment--it's just better if you don't have to worry about budgeting for rent, and going to buy groceries and having to cook. You'll be busy enough without that.

Ok boys & girls, here is my fatherly advice of the day. I have three girls of my own so I am more than qualified to give some. biggrin.gif

The best thing that you can do is find a local community college offering a RN nursing program and enroll in it. The program takes about two years and costs far less than a four year degree from a college. Here is the best part. The starting pay is nearly double that of most four year degrees. Even better is that almost every city in the US has nursing shortages so jobs are easy to find. I do not know of any other profession that can guarantee you that straight out of college. In my area, the hospitals will even pay your way through school in exchange for a commitment to got to work for them when you get your license. You will not beat that with any other profession.

Ok, my fatherly advice is done for the day. As for me, I went to college for Mechanical Engineering. It took me 5.5 years and was a very difficult degree to get. Do not follow that path unless you know what you are getting into. In my University, only about 25% of the engineering students made it through the program and got a degree. The rest either dropped out or switched to easier programs.

I want to go to a college out of state.
I'm in High School, and i want to start planning for my future!

well, going to try and get a scholarship (any would be nice!)
I want to be a Forensic Investigator....
Forensics fasinates me for some reason, but you have to go to medical & law school for that.
I live in California, and i want to go somewhere else than CSU, Berckley, ect. i wanna explore!

I agree, Forensics is quite cool! You might get to find out if someone got cursed by the Avada Kedavra! LOL

I'm stil in high school, and i want to do something fast and furious and exciting in the future, maybe something like a secret agent or something? My mom wants me to study medical but i think it might be kinda boring. I don't like science, u know. But i want to study in Cambridge! It's so pretty.
HPFan792
Finally someone like me,Thegirlwholived i also want to do something exciting and my mom wants to make me do something boring.imtherealluna*I know what you mean i want to go away to college and explore also.
El Barto
biggrin.gif Don't get me wrong, I wanted to do that exact same thing...going to become a CIA agent or FBI agent...but here's the rub...I'll explain it to the best of my ability.

You can either go into the military (or go from college, then to the military) or join the police academy and get your training that way...either way, though, you'll need some sort of training for that. You pay for tuition, of course, and you get all your things (utility belt, cape, booster rocket boots, etc.), and you take a series of tests. If you pass the police academy part, you now have to wait for a spot to open in your city...though I don't think thats as much of a problem now...but if 50 people graduate with you there is bound to be some competition. Then after gaining experience, you'd apply for the CIA or what have you...you'd definitly get there faster if you took a language, and/or political science.

As for going through the military...I suppose thats enough training, you'd just have to be selected based on your abilities and strengths. Or you can do what I'm doing and still be in the CIA in intell or something like that! You can pretty much apply your major to a lot of things. But, from what I'm hearing, all that people are looking for now is just somebody with a masters degree in something...anything...unless I heard wrong.

Hey Greg, is that legit? Maybe a lot of people don't know about it! Do you think its possible for somebody to get that certification quickly, go to work for a few years, then come back to do what they really wanted to do with the money they acquired to help pay off tuition, books, etc? One of my sisters' was gonna do that, and she was doing great, but quit for some reason ohmy.gif

And Aethonon is right. Its probably best to live on campus your first year, though if I'm not mistaken thats a rule now on most campuses! You have everything right there for you, all set up...you don't have to worry about waking up say 15 minutes earlier to get to school because you're already there, if you have a long break you can just go back to your dorm and play video games or something (or, if you want to, you can study)...OR if you plan on staying close to home maybe you can stay there while you go to school.

Alright, I'll stop there before this becomes a novel...
Anglophile92
Well I just started High School, but now everything counts. I want to go to University far from home. Not in the same state, not in the same country, not even the same continent! biggrin.gif I would love to study Law in England. It's less years, costs less, and it's England! As an Anglophile, it's kinda like duh, of course I want to study there. Plus you start learning your major, I don't want to spend time.

My dream Uni: Cambridge University. It's hard to get in, and as an International even more. So now I'm in the Pre-IB Program (I will be in the IB Program in 11th and 12th) it gives me more of a chance to get in. Plus I'm taking AP World History. As freshmens you're only allowed one AP class. biggrin.gif
Emmi Weasley
I voted "going to college away from home". However, I'm thinking about staying in the same state, since instate tuition is miniscule. But I'm also planning on visiting my favorite place in the world, England, rather soon. I will be there for a month. And I'm actually thinking about checking out some colleges over there. Who knows, I'm so impulsive I might just decide to live there and never leave again. haha
yuzna
If you can afford it try to go abroad...at least for a semester. Since I was originally from another country, going to college in the US was kinda like being abroad. Anywho, I have also been to college in Sweden and Germany. England would be nice, maybe some day...if the misses allows smile.gif
Esrb99
I'm a Junior in High School, and am currently talking with Berkeley and Orange University in Cali. for Creative Writing Journalism, and Music Theory. The only thing I need is toraise my 29 ACT to a 30+, then I get a half ride scholarship!

However, The band I'm in is currenty working at Nico-Intentions Studios on our debut Ep, Covers, and will release it on 33 1/3 gatefold vinyl and cd. we're also talking to Nitro and SolidState records. if that goes through, I will be postponing higher education indefinately.

so im in the middle.

I'm just now entering my last bit of graduate work to get my master's degree (nearly done). My field is English Literature. I actually looked into going into federal work, as a matter of fact. I considered applying to the DEA (most open in their applicant requirements). I figured someone with a background such as mine could get a job in research, etc. But then I figured if I somehow got myself killed, my wife would perform the blood, flesh, bone incantation to raise me from the grave so she could kill me again. So I decided not to. wink.gif BTW, if you are going into forensics, I recommend a college with a forensic science program. My university, The University of North Texas, has a program, if anyone is interested.

I put College Away from Home, because I plan on going to University over in anothre province- I hear in British Columbia they let you in automatically with an International Bacc, which I'm in the process of getting right now cool.gif

Oh, I would really like to get away to a more exciting place for college. Currently, my sights are set on New York City. I love the environment of this city and I know it pretty well already. Perhaps it won't work out, but I will try my hardest to at least go to a college in a metropolis.
r0n8urg4ndy
I can't wait for college. Im a senior in high school and i can't wait. High school is getting boring and I want something new.
zoabella
I'm four years away from going to college, but I know exactly where I want to go, Yale University, or NYU. For the theatre and film programs. I'd like to do so many things, but I think I want to be a screenwriter. And an actress, but the odds of doing that successfully are low. rolleyes.gif
Silence Dogood
I agree with you r0n8urg4ndy, I think high school is getting a little boring also. I'm a junior (11th grade), but what is exciting is next year is my senior year!

I would like to go to a college somewhat close to home, but all in all it depends on who gives me the most scholarship money to play baseball. If it's close to home great, but if it's not that's great too.
After the Burial
The past four years in college have been good to me. I only wish I had a little more fun along the way. I am graduating in May, and the only thing I have to boast about it how I made it through college.

I will graduate in four years with a double major and with honors (high GPA and alum of the Honors Program). Better than that, I will graduate with absolutely no debt. AND, I paid for every penny by myself. No help from anyone. Sorry about my boasting, but it feels good to be able to say so.
alkisti
I haven't voted anything because none applies to my case. In Greece, we have many types of college. We have universities which are superior to any other college, we have public colleges, private colleges and institutes which last only two years. It is complicated actually. Well, i am at a university and i'm studying journalism and communications, which have proved very interesting so far. The only problem i have, is that the past month we have been in a strike kind of thing and we can't have lessons. It is hard to explain, but the students decided that they don't want to have classes, as a way of a reaction against an up and coming law alteration, and thus, i do nothing which is...tiring! I really liked going to classes and now, i can't do that...Oh well... wink.gif
Ginevra_hena
I am in High School, and ofcourse it's started to get pretty serious now, I guess for now, I'd rather dream of studying somewhere close to home...but if far away, I'd always choose Warwick University of England...we'll see after 2 years..
Misto
Well, college doesn't exist here but I left home for university and moved about 750km north. I didn't regret it for a single second.
I'm home nearly every holidays but now, after two years I just don't feel like staying there any longer. Here is my home and I'm just a guest at my parent's house. This holidays I'll leave for London and only stop by my paretn's house around easter for a few days. There are so many people who stayed close to home. I honestly don't understand them. I'm young and free now, not later. One day I'll have a job that ties me to one place or another. That's already horrifying enough in my eyes.
As for the argument "my friends are at home" - just leave and see how many friends you really have. Those who are your friends won't stop being so just because there's the whole country between you. And the others - you can find mates everywhere (as well as some new real friends)

Yes, I'd do it again and if I get the chance to move somewhere differently tomorrow I'll be gone in an instant.
Silence Dogood
After the Burial, how can you not have any debt at all!?! That's amazing these days! Kudos to you! What were your majors? I'm thinking about majoring in either business, or communications and marketing.
After the Burial
Silence, my majors are Mathematics, Mathematics Education and Physics with a Statistics minor. How have I managed to not have debt? Good grades in high school and the university helped pay for about 40% of my education (scholarships, etc.) The rest was working several jobs. In the last four years, I have held jobs at a library, indoor pool, outdoor pool, referee for city league sports, tannery (deer hides in the fall) and construction for a small company. There were times when I would work 60 hours in a week on top of my 20 credits. Didn't need to do that often. I usually worked about 30 hours a week.

I am proud of what I accomplished, but it was not easy. Finding time to maintain a relationship was almost impossible. (But I am pretty hard to put up with anyway.)
shanshan
All throuhg high school I just wanted to get as far away as I could. But then senior year came and I wanted to stay, I didnt even want to leave. I eneded up going to a college about two hours away from my home town. When I first went to college I almost came home, I hated it. But I stuck it out, and never I would never dream of anywhere else. So if that happens, just stick it out, and give it some tiem...
little_aussie_witch92
In Oz we don't have 'College' as you call it. I actually attend a school called Warrnambool College, but it's pretty much like your high school. It goes from year 7 to year 12. After school I plan to go to University, but from what I know about College they're quite different. I have no idea what I want to do or what I want to study, or even where I want to go to Uni. I hope to get into a good one like Melbourne Uni or Monash, and I am definitely going to one in Melbourne (capital city of my state). I'm only in year 11, so I have time to decide biggrin.gif
Silence Dogood
After the Burial, I still can't belive you don't have any debt, it is abselutely amazing! In those subjects too, I am completely dumbfounded.
fany_monkey
i was actually atending a college near home but well i had some problems (not with grades) and i had to take a semester of *tear*
but this time off has been good for me because well i've realized that i want to a college in the US! so emm it's going better that way!
Accidentprone25
I'm a freshman in High school and I'm already thinking of college. I want to go to college in California because the have really good design schools. I want to be a designer so it would be perfect, but I will definatelyhave to get a scholarship to get in.
workaholic_1231
Well I'm intending to go away to college to major in about 4 different areas. I have high hopes for my future and hope to go to an Ivy League university followed by becoming a lawyer. smile.gif
Beater
I'm already in college and it is fairly near my house

it takes about 10 minutes to go there if you have a car , but it takes half an hour when you take a bus or any other mean of public transportation blink.gif

here we go to college according to our grades in high school, and thank god I got what I wanted, looks like it's a bit different with you
Ladie Lily Potter
I'm in grade eleven so I'm still thinking about Universities (or colleges) but I am planning to enroll in: Full Sail - School of Art, Design and Film, International Acadamy of Design and Technology, or Boston University. Not quite sure yet. I might change my mind.
LittleRed7771
Well, I'll tell you one thing, I wish I had gone straight to college as soon as I graduated high school. I made the mistake of taking time off. One situation lead to another and it became harder and harder to be able to finally take up college classes. Kids came along and pushed plans even further.

I have since started taking classes whenever I can. I've almost reached my 2-year degrees in business and accounting. After that, I'm going to start working towards my 4-year degree.

If only I had gone right after high school I'd already have my degrees and could have been working at a really nice business making really good money. As it is, it's taken me 4 years to get to where I am and haven't received a single degree yet.

My advice to all those who are fixing to graduate, if you are given the opportunity to go to college, go. Don't wait thinking you can go the next year. Things don't always work out like you plan due to unforeseen circumstances and next thing you know, you'll be in your 30's wishing you had gone to college all those years ago. A little extra studying now will save you a huge headache down the road! tongue.gif
HPFanatic2
Great advice LittleRed7771! I definitely plan on going to college, though where, I'm not quite sure. I think I'd like to end up becoming a doctor, so of course I'm going to need to go to a school with a good medical program. I've always been interested in Butler University, but I'm going to have to get a lot of scholarships to even begin to think about going there. Same with John Hopkins, Stanford, and Dartmouth. I've got a lot of options though, there are so many different medical schools.

I know people say they aren't the "college type," but there are so many different things in college to explore that basically everyone is the college type! I'm still in high school, but I know that I definitely want to go to college. Things may be tough for you at home, but you can always go away to college, which is what I'm planning on doing. Never give up because you think you're not the "college type."
dewet_pdw88
Heya

OK where I live it is called Varsity and I am attending I am studying B.com Accounting and I wanna be an Accountant of a big firm. It is an hour to drive during traffic and I have a bike so it is really quickly. To all you guys out there that don't know what to do with your life think about going to college or varsity it will do you a world of good and look on the bright side you might get to meet your true love.

I'm going to a college about two hours away from where I live. It's just the right distance for me. I'm gonna double major in biochemistry and spanish and double minor in theatre andpsychology. I'm moving in two months from now, and I'm really excited!
HJP/HJG_TrueLove
I want to go to college in a different state i've always kinda wanted to go to Boston College or somewhere in Colorado but only time will tell. I definetely want/neeed to go to college it will be major in my future career path.
Caitlin in Australia
The high school (7-12) I attend is called a college here is Australia so when I go to university in a few years I want to go to the Australian National Uni in Canberra (as it has one of Australia's best law schools), which is about five hours away from where I live or I want to go to Singapore Uni for a dew personal reasons to do with family, which is about an eight hour plane flight from where I live so wherever I go it will be far from home.
I plan not to have any debt (thanks to my dad), which here is quite hard to avoid as my teachers are forever reminding us at school (mainly commerce class).
Sofia_Snape
Where do you want to go?

What do you want to do?

Personally I want to go to Durham Uni to read German but I'm going to apply to Oxford too to see if I can get in tongue.gif

For those of you who are already there... What's it like??
Axoria
Well, I'm already there, I'm in my second year and I study international economy at the Budapest University. I must say that I love it, because it absolutely fits me. Languages are also important, but the subjects are partly humanities, partly scientific, and that's why I like it so much. And of course it offers big freedom, it's not so terrible! tongue.gif You must take your exams, but you can decide when would you like to prepare for them, it's a great thing, I think.

So good luck to all of you who apply for university! magic.gif
fany_monkey
i'm back in college so i'm so super happy about it! i'm just using this school so i can apply to another one somewhere else but i like my classes! it's so much work though! i had forgotten how hard it is to actually study tongue.gif
Lauren0891
I don't know if I'm going to go to Uni or not. I have no idea what I want to do when I'm older so if I don't know what I want to do then I'm not going to just go to Uni for the sake of it. I would like to go though.

If I do go, then I probably won't be taking a gap year. Anyone here thinking of taking one or have taken one?
