I was just thinking that mabey Snape doesn't hate James just because of the pranks James polled. I was thinking that maby the reason Snape is so cold and joined the dark side is because he had a crush on Lily.

If you have any thoughts on the matter please reply a.s.a.p.

If we think about it, when Lili tried to help Snape, he refused and called her mudbood! I don't think that Snape would easly fall in love..and it's even more strange that he would call the one he loves "mudblood"... But it's possible, just because it's Snape!
But I remember that JK said that no one would liked to be love by such an horrible person as Snape! So... I don't know...
The Silver Unspeakable
GinnyBrou, I've been thinking the exact same thing. I think that Snape infact did have a crush on Lily, and that's one reason why he hated James so much (then he hated her too later for marrying James.)
As for why he called her a mudblood, well, perhaps that was a cover-up. Like Magic Krixx said, Snape doesn't seem like the kind to fall in love; that is, he doesn't seem like it, because he doesn't show it. He's the kind of person who would keep his emotions bottled up and hidden, and also might want to behave the opposite of his feelings so people wouldn't guess his real feelings. Also, Snape really wouldn't want to act like he liked Lily, because James was right there, which would make matters even worse.
Another thing is, that he was probably angry and embarrassed at the moment. Just imagine being picked on and humiliated right in front of your crush. Especially for a boy to be picked on and loosing a fight in front the girl he likes, and then to have her be the one trying to save him. It's the whole male ego thing.

And one more thing. this is slightly off topic, but still related:
I was reading HBP and it was one of the parts where Harry is doing really well in Potions (thanks to the HBP) and Slughorn says that he must have his mother's talent; that she was extremely talented in Potions. And it got me wondering...why would Snape go through all that trouble to perfect all those potions? Could it be that he wanted to impress Lily?
Or, perhaps it was in fact Lily who wrote in the book for him. She appears to have had pity on him, so perhaps she was trying to help him do well in Potions. I got this idea because at one point, Hermione makes the comment that the handwriting looks more like a girl's. Just a possible, crazy theory.
GinnyBrou
I stick by my and the silvers opions. I still think that snape had a crush wub.gif with Lily. Thank you for replying. If you are reading this PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE reply!

I think that Snape did love Lily.

He just couldn`t show it Lily was very popular and I imagine her to be like Ginny is now. James made no secret that he wanted her to go out with him and I agree that it was a cover up that he called her a mudblood.

Can you just imagine what it would have been like if James and Sirius found out that he even liked her. They would say things like "what makes you think Lily would like a greaseball like you " or " you couldn't make a love potion strong enough for anyone to even like you snivellus"

The reason I think Snape came over to Dumbeldores side was the true remorse that he felt when Lily was killed and that he was responsible for the death of Lily after passing the information onto voldermort about the prophecy he heard (although we all know he only heard part of it ( but thats another story).

the idea that snape had a crush on lily is a good one smile.gif

maybe he did try and brew a love potion, because he is good at potion making (obviously) and it is a link to what happened with tom riddle senior and merope (because she made him fall in love with her)

maybe there is a link and if so what is it...
shanna
I really don't think I can get a good one.

First, Lily hated people using curses as much as they like without control but Snape did. James snogged Lily and so Snape hated James and Lily.

Second, one's in Slytherin and the other's in Gryffindor. Gryffindor and Slytherins never come together, and Slytherin was too much of the Dark Side.

Third, Snape knew more curses along than his gang.

Fourth - Snape must've joined the Dark Side early.

Fifth - What about starting to jinx each other as a joke and started to hate each other when one did great damage to the other?

Some contradicts this.

Peter Pettigrew must be a Gryffindor to join James not Snape. How come he joined the Dark Side?

Lily Evans didn't like people jinxing each other. Why she didn't do something about it to stop Snape and James? She only refused to go out with James but she didn't jinx them.
Nem
Would you like someone who dangled you upside down by your ankles for the school to see? lol. I believe Severus's and James hated each other in a very Harry Malfoy way.

However, with the 'Snape loves Lilly' theory flying around It wouldnt hurt to go a bit further and say he hated James more so for that reason. As people have said above, James did not hide the fact he liked Lilly, and TBH, if you were Snape (Currently infatuated with Lilly) Be very happy about that?

XxCeliaxX
In Snapes worst memory (Half Blood Prince) he is humilliated by James and Sirius, maybe it was his worst memory for another reason though? He was always being bullied and humilliated by James and Siruis so why is this the worst? I was thinking and maybe it was his worst memory because he called Lilly a mudblood and after that she wasnt nice to him any more and got with James, or somthing like that. I dont know but i really do have a feeling that he did like her.
xXTonksXx
i think its possible that snape loved lily wub.gif but also why did he call her a mudblood? i suppose its probably because he didnt want anyone to know or he would have got bullied more. but how come snape still hates james and sirius? he has no feelings for anyone else so how come he keeps saying how much he hates them? cant he just let it go? huh.gif although i suppose he feels like he never had any friends at hogwarts and spent seven years playing with a chemistry set. if he was that upset at school how come he wanted to go back and teach there? everytime he went past the lake would he not remember his 'worst memory'? personnally i think that if he wanted to teach potions that much he would have been better off in durmstrang. i suppose he had to pretend to dd that he was on his side though. im not sure.... huh.gif dry.gif
idiot
i think snape hated james of jeasley
james was good at qudditch and snapes mother was a qudditch player
so snape wanted to llive up to his mother expectation but gets beaten by james
and then that same person makes or play jokes on him.
it is natural to hate them .....
i think that expalines the memry when snape is trying to ride a broom stick......
lavender brown
i agree that snapes basis for hating james was jealousy because of quidditch, popularity, school work and probably lily

i like XxCeliaxXs idea that it was snapes worst memory because he was horrible to lily becaue i agree that it probably happened all the time, it also shows that his hate is probably more than a school grudge
DoubleD
Has anyone of you thought about Snape having a crush on James?

Ok, this was just a joke (although it would explain why James called Lily 'mudblood', he was jealous on her! wink.gif). No, I think that Snape was really jealous on James, because he had friends and was good-looking, maybe even because he was good in Quidditch.
If Lily was a reason? I daresay yes. He may have had a crush on her, but he didn't dare showing it, maybe because James and Sirius or some Slytherins may have bullied him (more).
His brain told Snape not to be in love with someone he had to hate because he was in Slytherin. DD said that our decisions make who we are and not our skills. Maybe Snape wanted to be in Slytherin and so he got in there (though he was a mud-blood himself). Yet, his brain couldn't control whta his heart felt. Then, his decision didn't allow him to love Lily, because as a Slytherin, Snape had to hate mud-bloods.

I think that Snape hated James in a Harry-Malfoy-way, but he pretended to hate Lily because he was desperately in love.
iwishiwasginny
I belive that Snape's mom wrote in the book, not Lily. Maybe he liked one of the girls that James dated, and he hated Lily because she was a mudblood.
Tarquin the Proud
Snape obviously hated James because James was an arrogant little toe rag. James flaunted his power over everyone else just because he could. Snape may have held feelings for Lily, and as James beat Snape and won Lily, that would have further enraged him. Snape joined the Dark Side, not so much out of revenge for James, but rather, I think, because that was the thing to do for Slytherins. In Book III, McGonnagal said that one of Dumbledore's spies told him that Voldie was after the Potters. Perhaps that was Snape. The book reiterates over and over again that Snape hated James but hatred isn't necessarily a prerequisite for wishing death on him. And further, it never said that Snape hated Lily.
I think Snape hates Harry for a two-fold reason. Firstly, because his appearance and mannerisms are similar to his nemesis James Potter.
Secondly, if he did care for Lily, I can't imagine how much it would gall him to deal with the product of their union on a daily/weekly basis. Se gap lai nhe.

i also think that Snape liked/loved lilly sad.gif and he didnt show it [because] he knew james liked her and if james found out he would torment snape even more
And harry looks so much like his father that snape doesnt actually see harry but james shutup.gif and harry has lillys eyes so when ever he looks in harrys eyes he sees lilly the only girl he might have actualy loved wub.gif
what do you think? cool.gif
lavender brown
hmmmm that interesting i never thought about it like when snape looks into harrys eyes he sees lily in them, that could be very interesting

throughout the book JKR reference snapes eyes as being cold and dark/grey, maybe this could mirror the love lost when he looks into harrys eyes??

that a bit weird sorry but i wanted to extend my post a bit
craZ
I think the only reason that Snape hated them was explained in the 5th book and now we also know *spoiler* that Snape is good after all so it doesn't have anything to do with good and bad (I don't think)
Spencer Potter
I think Snape told Lily a secret, I think those spells he created, told her, then she told James, then James used them on Snape as Harry found out looking into Snapes Worst Memory. Then when Lily stuck up for Snape he said he doesnt need help from a "mudblood." I guess you can say she had it coming. Thats why he hates Lily.

As for James, well, they were bound to be worst enemies from the start as were Draco and Harry. James teased Severus because I guess he was a loner and always had his nose in the books making things and being interested in school while James and Sirius were too cool for school.

P.S. That last sentence their rhymed ^^ happy.gif
PotterrockS
I think that Snape really liked Lily. I think he felt like she was out of his league and tried to resent her for it..... and then resented James even more for being able to make her fall in love with him. James could always do what Snape couldn't...including having a relationship with the girl of THEIR dreams. wub.gif
molly72989
it is probably for those reasons & also maybe he is jealous of their relationship & wished he had a spouse like Lily. maybe the next book will tell us why, hopefully because that is what i've wondered for a while. i can't wait for the next book!
needless_needing
Here are some of my theories why Snape hates James and Lily Potter:

>James is all Snape wanted: smart, clever and a superb quidditch player

>Lily married James even though Lily always defend Snape everytime they played a prank on him

>Lily is muggle-born.

>The pranks James did to Snape.

Or maybe he just disliked Lily and James by nature or by envy or insecurity by means of talent and popularity.
Maybe it doesn't have anything to do with the Dark Side or not. happy.gif
Layla
I cannot see Snape loving Lily. It just doesn't fit together and is kind of gross when you think about it. Snape hated James because he was basically mr. perfect, with good grades, good looks, a good quidditch player, and head-boy. While Snape was some freak obsessed with the dark arts. He wasn't popular at all. The fact that James was always humiliating Snape in front of everyone didn't help too much either. And then there's Lily, a muggleborn.I don't think he hated Lily as much as James because whenever he is taunting Harry he mentions his father, not his mother. But I don't think Snape loved Lily, just disliked her because of the fact that she's muggleborn.
Silence Dogood
There is no doubt that Snape hated James, but I don't think he hated Lily. Mostly because she stood up for him when James, Lupin, Sirius, and Pettigrew were making fun of him all the time. But when Lily started to date James, his opinion on Lily probably changed, not completely, just a little.
hogwarts
hey,
u know what i just thought? maybe the reason that voldy asked lily to hand over harry at the start was because Snape had told him to or rather hinted him to, because voldy would not be very comfartable with one of his faithful follower being in love with a Muggleborn. any thoughts............... rolleyes.gif
hp1
snape definatly hated james, but i don't believe he hated lily, but actually loved her

he didn't really let people know because she was a muggle born and snape supported pure bloods, even though he was half blood.

i think part of the hatred towards james was because of lilly and because they just loathed eachother, like harry and malfoy's relationship
Perure
Why Snape hated Lily before she started to go out with James is a riddle but anyone who's ever gone to school knows that you can hate someone by the guts without really knowing them, it's just their personality and well I can't really say what it is but I've known the feeling, not to the extent as it was between James and Severus...
Severus Granger
Snape either loved or Hated lily and i am going for that he loved her.

Snape didn't know which parent he killed was a quote in the 5th book. Maybe he hated James but loved Lily but was to much of a Coward to show it. He was afraid that if he showed his true feeling he would get picked on more and then he would get laughed at. James was the main cause, James and Lily were GF and BF so Snape was like i will hate James then Lily will hate him to. It worked for like 5 years but then Lily and James hooked up and maybe that is why Severus Snape joined the Dark Side
alohomora
hmmm
i dont think i can go with the snape loved lily theory, although it is possible.
i'm just going to stick with my belief that snape hated james because james was everything snape wasnt, such as good at quidditch, that type of stuff.
Nymphodora
I think it's a combination of jealousy towards James and love for Lily. That was a good point about Harry having Lily's eyes, and maybe that's why Snape hates him so much, but again that could be coupled with the fact that James was everything Snape wanted to be... popular, good at quidditch, strong group of friends, and Harry has some of those qualities too. Seems like Snape was more of a loner at school. Maybe if things had been different then he may not have become a Death Eater in later life.

Any theories as to why he became one in the first place? And why did he then turned spy for Dumbledore? was it on the Dark Lord's orders, as it says in HBP? Or was it because LV killed Lily? Did he have a change of heart after his master destroyed the woman he loved?
amarata_lupin
I am all with you on this theory; this is because there is a lot of substantial evidence that maybe Snape was always jealous of the fact that in the end James’ popularity won Lilly over. Maybe this “crush” Snape had on Lilly has never really gone away, and is reflected in future actions.

For example when Snape told Voldemort about the prophecy, didn’t he say no matter what, Voldemort should spare Lilly Potter. We know for a fact Voldemort spare’s no one, when there is something in it for him. Didn’t Voldemort ask Lilly to move out of the way?……………

Then we know Voldemort did in fact kill Lilly, and Snape suddenly “switched” sides.

There is a key, or a link, maybe it is Love…

Because at the end of the day everything boils down to it.
juzkow
Well at first I thought that snape was hating james and lily because of a failed relationship. But after the exams(back in time) james had snape upside down because he hated snape(grey underwear tongue.gif ). But lily said something about not going out with him while snape was upside down. Therefore it was not because james was dating lily. It might be becasue james liked her and ruined his chances with her on purpose.
Kam
i think that snape hated james becasue he was so popular and he hated lily becasue she wouldnt go out with him or something. then when james started datinf lily he hated her and him even more.
Dingar
I think Snape didn't have a crush on Lilly, i just think he hated them because, he wea/is a servent of Voldy, and secine they were agasent Voldy he hated them, what do you think, well it willl be reveled in Book 7.
Ginevra_hena
I never really gave it a thought, why ? Well, I think that something else will be revealed in the last book...something more erranous that James had done to Snape than what we saw back in the pensieve. And Lily...does he really hate her?
anna_tank
I think he might have had a crush on Lilly, all those secret spells he put in his potions books to try out on James because he envied him. But then again it’s still pretty unlikely, I don’t think it could so far as him loving her because she was a Gryffindor and he was a Slytherin I just can’t see that working out
ChoChangizHot
I think that is definetly true he probably hated James because Lily had liked him so much, in there seventh year anyway and he didnt want to show he liked her so he insulted her, but i dont think he hated Lily. Another reason he hated James was because he was better than Snape in so many wsys that he sometimes wished to be James.
hp1
my guess is that snape did realli like lily, and he was mad that james and lily liked each other. also, i think the snape/james rivalry is similar to the one of harry/malfoy. it is unlikely that malfoy likes hermione or ginny, but i think the good vs bad characters deal comes into play her as well. i think snape and james relationship mirrors harry and malfoys, so as we can see from harry and malfoy's relationship, they hated each other from the start and had too many differences in choices and values.
slytherin89
hey i think most off you are all right but my opinion is that there might be a possibility that snape could be harry's father like you read in book 5 it shows that more of the persons knew that snape was in fact in love with lily it might also be that they went together and a week later or so she's with james or any thing like that i it might be so that harry is his son and that he knew just a few years before he came to hoggwarts(harry then hea..) because you see in the movies and read in the books that snape is to protective over harry so it might be hope not ansd hope so because then ofcourse harry and snape and hermione and draco and ronald would be able to defeat voldemort better and sooner

well go to go bye bye love and kissi me amanda

I find this very unlikly because Snape obviously hates muggle-born witches and wizards. I mean he acts awful to Hermione(a muggle-born witch) but I dont think he has a crush on her. Im sticking with the fact that he just hated james because he was soo much more popula then him at school.
she who must be named
I THINK THAT SNAPE LIKED LILY. wub.gif HE HATED JAMES BECAUSE:
JAMES WAS A AGOOD QUIDITCH PLAYER
HE WASWAS POPULAR

JAMES AND LILY LIKED EACH OTHER
Prophecy408
I think we may all be looking to deep here. I mean there is no one reason why snape hated james. He makes some reference to it in every book. Snape despised everything about James. James picked on Snape, James was popular, James was everything Snape wasn't. Snape just plain hated James and thats all there is too it. Its not even that Snape just hast James. It was mutual for all the same reasons, one was the picture of all the other hated most, and i believe it is as simple as that. As for Snape hating Lily who knows. He could very well have liked her becasue she was the only person who was ever decent to him. I think whats more likely is that Snape hated James so much, and Lily was there. She was close to James and since Snape had nothing but contempt for James it was Inherent.
Phat Harry
Snape and lil in the tree K.I.S.S.I.N.G first comes love second comes married and third comes a babie in the babies carridge. wooh! snap did have a crush on lily it kinda makes the story more interesting ohmy.gif I hope we find more about this and why snape hated jamse so much in the 7th book <3
philwashere_24
listen to this... Snap's worst memory was because he insulted lily, causing a rift between the two. Lily married james. James and snape just hated each other. Snape tells voldemort to kill james, but leave lily alive for him. This is why voldemort says "your mother needn't have died, she was trying to protect you." Voldemort goes ahead and kills lily. Snape is POed and goes to dumbledor's side. this is what happened.
kelsHEARThp
Snape is just Snape.

He's a loser.
Diggory_05
James and Severus had a rivalry all throughout school... So say Snape did have a crush on Lily, James would be sure to know about it and do something about it... THerefore he pursued Lily, not because he had feelings for her, but because he knew Snape did... So James might not have loved Lily to begin with... But overtime grew to love her with all his heart... Causing Snape even more trouble... What I want to know however, is a little more about Lily and James' wedding? Who was there? Who wasn't? Who was invited and didn't come? Snape perhaps... Did James ever stop fighting with Snape? Did Snape ever forgive James for stealing the one he cared about? I know this is a lot of questions, but confront the ones you feel you can...
Weasly_Girly_83
Ok, say that Snape did hate James because he loved Lily, that can't be the only reason. Because Snape hated James back when Lily hated James as well. I think it's more likely that he hated James because of the pranks, and because he was in debt to him. I don't think he would like to be in debt to anybody. And he hated Lily because she was muggle-born and in Gryffindor. All Slytherins hate muggle-borns and Gryffindors by law practically.
Kelso2010
I've always thought that there was a chance that Snape had a crush on Lily. That's only because of the way she would stick up for him and he would still be mean. (kinda like in kindergarden when boys had germs and girls had cooties) But I don't think that that would be the only reason that he hated James. James was constantly mean to him and was always humiliating him. If someone did that to me I'd hate them too.

-Kelso
hermione.
i think snape did have a crush on lily and was trying to hide it by being horrible to her....i am not sure weather anyone else knew about that, but i think he was under a invisability cloak the voldy killed james and he begged voldy not to kill lilly thats why voldy gave lily so many chances, and snape came 2 DD's side wen voldy killed lily....maybe!!!

Well i am pretty sure snape hated james because of all the pranks and jokes he pulled. But i still dont get why he hates lily and why he joined the dark side????
