I'm finally reviewing! Sorry it took me so long.
This just struck me from a purely grammatical standpoint:
QUOTE
Lucius Malfoy raised his hand from the table in front of him to brush away a stray lock of platinum hair from his pale, gaunt face
It's a bit better to say "to brush a stray lock of platinum hair away from his pale, gaunt face." It's not exactly a rule, but it stands out.
QUOTE
hard glare of a noble born that intimidated lesser men.
For some reason, this one sounds odd to me at all. It sounds better to me as "noble birth" instead of "noble born" unless you were going for that whole muggleborn type feel.
QUOTE
Inwardly, Lucius smiled, amused that they would treat him this way; as such a danger.
Oh, I can definitely see Luicius finding amusement and pride in something like this! Nothing, given his current position, should make him feel any measure of pride, but I guess a leopard can't change his spots. (Thanks, gram, for that saying . . .)
QUOTE
I am beginning to think you must secretly enjoy repeatedly hearing tales of all the creative ways I found to remove the worthless scum of our society.
Nice teaser line here! Knowing that he's going to have a choice to make, this line really creates a sense of animosity between the reader and the character.
QUOTE
He had been sure the almost totally pure-blood Wizengamot would not have allowed the law to execute him, one of their own, and his trial had proven that.
I like this line as well. It's more realistic to think that even in a post-Voldemort world there are still injustices. Life after Voldemort should still have its share of troubles. After all, Voldemort didn't invent evil.
QUOTE
“The retroactive Phoenix’s Choice offer you have been made is outside of the normal laws and courts.
Hmmm. . .this line makes me think that nothing good will come of this choice for Lucius. I almost suspect it's Potter under Polyjuice getting ready to kill him!
QUOTE
The second choice is called Lockhart’s Blessing
This one made me laugh, too. Imagine Lockhart having something named after him for being his own!
QUOTE
This final option is the Dementor’s Kiss
I find this an interesting name for the potion given what it does balanced with what we know of the Dementor’s Kiss. . .it seems that this potion would almost act as a reverse kiss, in a way. Interesting.
QUOTE
This is a blood quill.
Ah, that old, dear friend of Harry’s. . .
QUOTE
You were right, Harry.
I had a feeling.
QUOTE
Everything that happens to them is by their own hand, and is only in their own mind.
This is an ingenious idea.
QUOTE
Taking a quick look at his watch, Kingsley decided Ron had the right of it and a drink was in order.
I absolutely love this line, as well. I love it because they are finished with him, he’s made his choice and it no longer effects them . . . even though moments before taking that potion, Lucius was convinced he would be returning to his former glory. It was just such a stark contrast that, despite everything he’d done- he no longer had any effect or power over anything. I also think it speaks to how either side can remain distant and even blind to the pain they cause. . .
Very nicely done, as always! Thanks for sharing!
