Hi all!

firstly im real sorry if this has already been discussed or something so feel free to close it if it has..and in advance sorry unsure.gif

anyways
I noticed obviously there was a different dumbledore sad.gif ...but when the fat lady was attacked you got a shot of dumbledores nails (which weren't looking particularly nice) sleep.gif when he was observing the portrait and then i realised that his appearance had just completely changed...he wasnt wearing as lush robes (in my opinion) as the previous dumbledore and his beard was tied up..i no it is a different person but why do you think they changed his appearance so much??

Well there were many different things about the Michael Gambon Dumbledore vs. the Richard Harris Dumbledore. (Personally, I like...or loved...Harris MUCH more) One of them being the characteristic of Dumbledore's beard. Long, flowing, and white (like Richard's), unlike Gambon's.

I don't care for how Gambon looked, but I do care how he portrays Dumbledore and I wasn't too happy. Not very Dumbledore like, in my opinion, but I'll discuss that in another thread wink.gif.
D.A
yes i get what your saying and i do care about the way gambon portrays dumbledore more...but i dont know when harris played DD...(i loved Harris ...he is exactly how i imagined DD to be)..he seemed to bring about that calmness that DD has his long flowing white beard his luscious robes etc. the way they have put gambon i mean his robes are dull which for me kind of reflect the way he plays DD his beard doesnt look right either....then again this is just my opinion im probably just being picky ...but hey! unsure.gif happy.gif

62442al_Man
That's alright, I understand where you are coming from. And I think I am picky too. When it comes to the noblest, boldest, most positive character, or whatever you want to call him, I should hope that they try and get that feeling off. But Gambon, meh, I don't know. he just isn't Dumbledore to me.
D.A
yes!...just seeing harris (RIP) sad.gif as DD it was such a perfect choice!

But gambon isnt a bad actor..i just think with the combination of the way he looked..(also when he kind of attacked harry in GoF) put me off!..

sayin that when this movie comes out he might be a little different maybe theyll change his appearance a little more happy.gif *mayb thats wishful thinking*

oh well here's to wishing!

Wasn't Gambon's fake or did he actually grow that? I personally like Harris' appearance more than Gambon's but I like Gambon's acting better, we are seen as he is a very nice, quiet guy but I just can't get past how Harris' is so tame and quiet, I'm sorry I couldn't live with that.

I think it was fake because I saw an interview with him that was taken I think either while they were making the movie or right after and he didnt have a beard. I don't think he'd shave it either, because then he'd have to grow it again, so I'm pretty sure it's fake. *sigh* I wish the old Dumbledore hadn't died he was awesome! sad.gif

Richard Harris had the twinkle in his eye which is often told in the book. But Gambon didn't have it.It looks like he is so fierce and not nice to see.You saw the scene in GoF where he shakes Harry like anything and asks very rudely whether he had put his name in the Cup.The character doesn't even suits him.Harris was actually forced by his daughter to accept the role of Dumbledore. She told him that she wouldn't talk to him unless he accepts the role.Sad...I wish Harris didn't die..
Albus Dumbledore
The shaking was not Gambon's fault, it was the directors. But He does have the twinkle we so want to see... think about POA, the scene with the Time Turner... before and after they return, I see that Dumbledore-esque smile and twinkle! Minus the dirty nails and wierd attitude, Michael Gambon would be perfect. Lets judge his performance after OotP... this is where he can show his true colors... the sad ending, the fighting. I am excited to see how he does.

~Albus
D.A
Hmm i guess the shaking wasnt his fault but i mean whether i think he had the dumbledore twinkle or not (i personally think he didnt but thats just my opinion) i do think that they have made him look i dont know how to say it...like less majestic. i dont think his robes complement what his character should be. he is always in grey.

Yes, i know what you mean and i am glad i saw this thread because this issue was annoying me for a quite long time. So, this new dumbledore is a great actor, surely i can`t contest that, BUT IT DOESN`T FIT IN THE ROLE. i mean, has he read the books anyway? i didn`t see nothing and i can`t tell you that ABSOLUTELY nothing in the way that i imagined dumbledore. Harris had a great vision about DD and he managed to put it on the screen in a proffesional way! Everyone who i talked too have the same opynion about this, and i am glad to see that you noticed too. So i was thinking: why aren`t they changing Gamblon (or whatever his name is)?
Moon(I luv you Luna)
I LOVED Richard Harris. He just had the Dumbledore feel. You know what i mean? Graceful ... yet powerful. Gental ... yet strong. He just acted exactly how he does in the books. Michel Gambon however ... he's just ... um ... er ...

Ok, i don't want to be mean, but he sucks at being Dumbledore!

Ok, ht eifrst Dumbledore was graceful, but Gambon ... like in GoF, he practically slamed Harry into a wall! And strod in like all macho and "Oooo look at me! I'm all supirior!" just not how Dumbledore is portrayed.

I'll understand if he was told to act like that by the directors, but i just didn't like he way he acted. He didn't protray Dumbledore that well.

R.I.P Richard Harris. May you rest in peace. sad.gif
HermioneClone
I much prefered Richard Harris. He was so serene, gentle, and likeable.
As for appearances, I noticed that the new Dumbledore's beard is much shorter than Harris' and DD's in the book. I don't like how it's tied up, either. I think his hair is a bit grayer instead of more white as well. I don't mean to be so picky, though.
HPFanatic2
Gambon seems much too fierce to play Dumbledore. He portrays Dumbledore in a completely different way from the books. When I imaging Dumbledore, the first thing I think of is him being extremely wise and calm. Gambon doesn't really seem to have that air about him. I agree that he does have that Dumbledore "twinkle" in his eyes, but he just seems too severe to play Dumbledore.

I also agree with HermioneClone in that his beard is too gray. I don't know though, because I saw the first movie before reading the book, so maybe Harris influenced my vision of Dumbledore too much.
xalliee
Coincidentally, I'm watching GoF and the part where Gambon attacks Harry was just on! Even though it's the director's fault, it just bugs me. It's not very Dumbledore-esque at all!

Personally, I prefer Harris to Gambon. He just fits the role in the most perfect way. I think its really horrible that he died, because I don't know how well Gambon will fit into everything that goes on in OotP and HBP. How will he describe the prophecy and everything with the calmness that JKR makes a point to describe often in the books? I just don't think he's right for the job, in apperance or mannerisms.
snow-white
i don't mind gammbon as dd he did a great job in poa
but i slso loved richard harris as dd and was suprised
when he was replased with gammbon i always wanted peter otoole
i think he would have been better but i could have just been the director falut in gof GIVE GAMMBON A CHANCE TO PROVE HIMSELF tongue.gif
ChOco
yeah, i rekon richard harris had a more dumbledore-look & character than gambon, but gambons' alright as well, and i agree, it seemed a bit out of character when dd questions harry harshly in GoF. i mean he was practically attcking the poor lad. But, its' not gambons' fault.
D.A
Woo hoo people replied well i havent been on for ages but thanks!
Yay im glad some people agreed with me happy.gif
I just thought it was a bit strange to also change the appearence of Dumbledore when Gambon started playing the role because i think they had it spot on when Harris played dumbledore in the 1st two films.

D.A cool.gif
SnakeCharmer74
Gambon was fitting for Goblet of the Fire. When he burst into Professor Moody's office after the TriWizard tournament I had goosebumps. I don't think Richard Harris, in all his serenity, would be able to pull it off quite like Gambon did.

I also agree with Albus Dumbledore that he definitely had the 'eye twinkle' in PoA. When he walked down the stairs humming the Mexican hat dance I can't help but giggle!

Gambon also did magnificant when he talked about Cedric's death. He was morose, and sad, yet determined and very powerful.

The fight scene between Voldemort and Dumbledore in the MoM will be amazing to see. I think Gambon will pull it off beautifully.

Guys remember this thread is ment to be about what dumbledore looked like in POA not comparing gambon to Harris on their acting happy.gif
so anyways i agree with HermioneClone i dont like how they have tied up his beard in POA either. I cant remember if it was tied up in GoF though anyone know?

I really liked the dumbledore that played the role in PS and CoS. I miss him. He looked exactly lik ei pictured Dumbledore! blink.gif shutup.gif rolleyes.gif unsure.gif ohmy.gif biggrin.gif
Harry Ballsonia
Yeah, changing the actor who played Dumbledore wasn't exactly a great move. The original Dumbledore portrayed the calm and patient Dumbledore you read in the books. The new one is DD when he iz cranky n stuff. I myself liked the original better.
Weasley King
i hate dumbledore's new hat since Michael Gambon took over the role
snapesgirlforlife
ok....i totally agree with the whole thing about Harris being a WAY betterDD than Gambon. Although i really think that he's a talented actor, but he's just not a very talented person to be playing DD. and when he attacks Harry in the 4th movie, then if you think about it, i don't think that Harris would've done that. Harris was much more layed bakc and Gambon is just out there with too much more energy. i really hope that Harry will through things of DD around a bit in the 5th movie, because i think that it would've been better if Gambon had to sit there and be DD for that part rather than Harris. in the 6th book, DD and Harry argue in DD office after they saw Slughorn's memory and i was thinkin that Harris would not have yelled or anything, but Gambon i know for a fact, will yell if the directors tell him tat is what he needs to do, and i really dislike that whole thing if you tell me, and i really don't understand why they changed him so much from the 2nd to the 3rd. i didn't like it either, so you guys aren't the only ones.

I agree with pretty much everything that has been said. Harris was the perfect DD, in my opinion. I see him as someone who appears quiet, kind, friendly, welcoming, but if you cross him - if you threaten his students or if you're "evil" (sounds cheesy, but true) then he can become more dangerous to you than you've ever imagined. He's kind of silent but deadly, in a way.

That said, I don't think that Gambon is doing justice to the part. I think, as some has said, he's played the part too aggressively at times. And perhaps, that is the director and the script. I think the aggressive parts are overshadowing anything else - because the films are missing so much of what made Harry and DD's relationship special. We don't see Gambon take Harry to his office and talk to him after revealing Barty Crouch Jr., so we don't see anything other than an aggressive, forceful DD. It kinda sucks, really, that the character and the relationship is being lost in translation.
D.A
Hey Fawks102 thanks for replying laugh.gif
I totally agree with everything you said.

But anyways thought everyone would like this article that Aethonon kindly posted on the general movie forum.

QUOTE
Temime’s designs also help give Michael Gambon’s Professor Dumbledore a distinct identity from Richard Harris’ portrayal of the character. “Alfonso wanted Dumbledore to look like an old hippie, but still very chic and with a lot of class,” she explains. “His previous costumes had been quite heavy and majestic, but we took some silk and tie-dyed it so when Dumbledore is walking around, his robes float behind him. It’s a much lighter look, which also gives the character more energy.”

Personally why oh why would you want DD to look like "an old hippie"...rawr makes me so mad!

Thanks D.A. smile.gif

I think the whole "old hippie" thing is a little strange too. And I hope that this doesn't come out wrong, because I'm not trying to criticize Gambon personally, but I always pictured DD as being somewhat thinner and taller. I think of his character as seeming weak, yet infinitely knowledgable, and with, as I said, a kind of quiet power. I think of his robes as kind of enveloping him rather than being some kind of hippie garb...oh well.

Your welcome! hug.gif

I completely know what you mean because I feel the same way!
Putting the acting aside from the two different DD's in my opinion they had it spot on in the first two films.
Because for one his beard was white (i know its nit picking but it just looks so much better white!) and his robes seemed majestic and beautiful and although he did seem a bit fragile for me i still got the feeling that he could be really powerful and angry when he needed to be.
But from PoA onwards the really thin materialed "hippie" robe just looks completely weird and when they tie his beard up and stuff...i dont know I just find it strange is all!!

I agree with everyone here, Richard was perfect, and now Gambon is just... Ok I guess... He's a little to crazy, I know that Dumbldore is supposed to be a little random but Gambon is just too random...
As for the beard I didn't like it tied, I liked it the way Richard had it, and I liked Richards robes better, Gambons looked a little more like a rag... not to be rude or anything...
But I defenitly liked Richard better, appearace and acting...
synchro spell
I liked both Harris' and Gambon's acting, but whenever I read scenes from a Harry Potter book with dumbledore in it, i always imagine Harris.
time turner
I prefered the first DD, he is how I imagend DD looking, before I saw the movies. But the new DD is a good actor, and plays the part well.
vicki34
Yes! For a while there I thought I was the only one that didn't like Michael Gambon as DD. I just watched SS again recently and noticed how Richard Harris really acted as the Dumbledore I always pictured in my mind when I read the books (calm, kind, but powerful). Then I went and saw PoA and GoF with Gambon as DD and I must say I was disappointed. He just didn't seem to fit with the role of DD. I am not saying anything against Michael Gambon, it's just different to how i thought Dumbledore should be. But then again, JK Rowling's Dumbledore is different to the dumbledore in the movies.
miss dolly
yeah i noticed that, and i dont think director wanna do this blink.gif i like dumbeldore in first and second movie,he doing a great job on it ,if u know why its been changed plz tell me
UnknownLocket
Oh well Richard Harris who played the first Dumbledore passed away. sad.gif Therefore, it was only necessary to replace him with someone else, Michael Gambon.

But anyways, I actually thought that I was the only one who noticed this. The New Dumbledore looks sort of.....trashy. His robes are gray and shabby, his nails are nasty, but the reason for that ponytail is because Gambon's beard naturally isn't that long. However, they could have just glued some astentions on, instead of using a ponytail. And not only has Dumbledore's appearance changed, but also his demeanor. I mean did you see the way that he shoook Harry forcefully in the GoF after his name came out of the goblet. That was so not DD-ish but amateur-ish. Dumbledore is strong and powerful, yet gentle. I just don't think that Michael Gambon portrays his character correctly.

Lol, someone said this another thread and I thought it was funny. The reason that Dumbledore is dead is because of Michael Gambon. laugh.gif
After the Burial
Given the abilities of film makers and costume designers and makeup artists, I find it ridiculous to think that they couldn't make Michael Gambon look more like what Dumbledore should look like.

I have seen some of the previews for the Order of the Phoenix movie. It appears that they have fixed some of the problems with Gambon's appearance. His beard at least looked a bit longer and whiter. I suppose that is a start.
Harry&Hermione4Ever
In my opinion I like Michael Gambon better. Because he is so energetic I don't know if Richard Harris could of pulled off the DOM scene because Richard Harris seems much to calm to do all that. I have seen some scenes of Michael Gambon doing to dueling scenes and he is doing them quite well.

As for the appearance I do agree that Richard Harris looked better. Michael Gambon's nails were horrible when I saw them.
Lauren0891
I hate his new appearance personally. It's just not what Dumbledore is meant to look like. His robes are shabby instead of the regal looking ones he used to wear. His beard should be white as well. I think it's grey because that is Gambon's natural colour but couldn't they dye it or have him wear a wig and a fake beard? huh.gif With the technology they have in film making it would hardly be impossible. At least change the robes.

It was Cuarons decision to change his robes, or so I read in an interview, so I thought that maybe another director would change it. But they haven't. sad.gif Apparently Cuaron wanted Dumbledore to look like an 'aging hippy'. Okay, so show me where in the books that Dumbledore is described as looking like a hippy? sleep.gif

As far as the acting goes, I'm not critising Gambon as I think he does a good job, but Richard Harris was just the perfect Dumbledore. But there's another thread for that so I'm going to stick to his appearance. You can't really blame Gambon though. It's the director's and the costume and make-up departments' faults.

His nails were awful - Dumbledore is not some dirty un-groomed man. dry.gif

Half_Blood_Princess
I agree that the new Dumbledore it's totally different from the "old one". I personally like Richard Harris's Dumbledore better!
I liked the way Harris's Dumbledore was talking and acting , he was calm and toughtfull, but Gambon's version of Dumbledore is much more energetic and totally different.... Ofcourse he has his moments when he's calmer and all, but it isn't the same!
I miss Richard Harris! R.I.P. unsure.gif That was the Dumbledore I tought at when I first read the books, and it still is..
Sofia_Snape
I think once you get to scenes like the lake in HBP, a stronger, more adventurous looking DD is needed and I don't think Richard could have done that, he's too much the Grandfatherly figure-you wouldn't imagine him to have that dark past with Grindelwald whereas Michael's portrayal is a bit more steely. Get what I mean?

I had a funny convo with my best mate who I've just got into HP. I lent her my POA dvd after she'd watched 1 and 2 and I asked her what she thought...

"Well, I didn't like the way they changed Dumbledore"

"That's because the first one died"

"Oh."

"So I guess they needed to change him"

"Yea. Oh I feel really bad now"
amortentia_149
I realized those things as well, but i don't think that was the only major change. There were so many more different things about that movie that it didn't even look like the same hogwarts. But yes, dumbledore looked extremely different from what is in the book. though, i think this one makes a better dumbledore, they didn't make him look like they should have. totally agree biggrin.gif
ChikkyD
I agree with most things that've already been stated. I too prefered Richard Harris (R.I.P) as Dumbledore, especially in the fourth movie, GOF, when he shakes Harry after he was chosen as a champion. That scene in particular made me dislike him even more. Gambon just doesn't have the same feel as Harris did...
