Hello,
I have read all the HP books and they are great. I have since looked at the cast list for 'Goblet of Fire'. Does anyone know who will play Professor Umbridge.

Hiya!! Welcome to the forums, Dawn!!
Professor Umbridge is Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher in Order of the Phoenix, not Goblet of Fire, which is why no one has been cast in the role yet. Although nothing has officially been released about the Order Of The Phoenix movie yet though, I'm pretty sure that there's a script floating around somewhere.
I dunno....I kind of liked the idea of Dame Judy Dench playing Umbridge...I think she'd be brilliant at it...although they'd probably have to pad her up a bit because Umbridge is supposed to be a bit...er...round, isn't she?

Welcome to the forums Dawn!
Yeah Umbridge is in OOTP not GoF. But still, hmm, I can't think of any actresses, although my Enlish/Lit. teacher looks (and unforunatly acts) just like her, but I guess that doesn't really count. I can't wait to see who they pick for her though (and for young Snape!)

[FONT=Arial][SIZE=7][COLOR=blue]I do not know who'll play Professor Umbridge, but i have a pic in my head on who'd play her. There is a woman by the name "Roseanne" i got her face stuck in my head while reading about Umbridge, roseanne is well known in hollywood. Write to me and tell me what you think.

I can't imagine anyone being able to play the part right. She's such a unique character that I don't think anyone could play her just right. But I can't wait to see who they cast for her.

Umbridge?....I'm kind of curious about which actress they'll choose to play her in the fifth movie, I personally can't think of any actresses that'd be perfect for her role...but I do actually picture her as a rather tall, skinny lady. Do they ever actually describe her in the books...appearance wise?
Luke_57
Apr 11 2005, 10:09 PM
um she is a very very very short witch that is rather plump with a wide smile and the face of a toad

if someone can find the quote when she is described in the book please insert it

Yes but Umbridge was destroying the entire school....she was sacking some of the professors and putting most of them on probation, just because she wants to be sure she's like, in charge and everything. I personally don't like that about her. I actually don't see much good in her character at all. She sacked Dumbledore!...and basically changed the entire Hogwarts atmosphere....I just don't like her at all.

There are just too many places where JK writes about her wide complacent smile, which reminds Harry shockingly of a toad...her voice is exceedingly irritatingly girly and high-pitched...she is stout, her legs are short and has short stubby fingers...that's about it...and yeah, i think they'll skip the part in the movie where harry enters Snape's memory and sees his Father...though, i'd LOVE to see Young James, Young Sirius and Lily...and Snape too, of course...

Black_Velvet, here's a description of Umbridge from the book. This is the first time we get to "see" her:
| QUOTE |
| He thought she looked just like a large, pale toad. She was rather squat with a broad, flabby face, as little neck as Uncle Vernon and a very wide mouth. Her eyes were large, round and slightly bulging. Even the little black velvet bow perched on top of her short curly hair put him in mind of a large fly she was about to catch on a long sticky tongue. [...] The witch spoke in a fluttery, girlish, high-pitched voice that took Harry aback; he had been expecting a croak. |
And I totally agree with your previous post, she was attempting to make a whole transformation of Hogwarts that was just WRONG. She is just an awful person, and I hate her for what she did to Harry. That quill is illegal, surely!!! (which would be ironic since she's working for the Ministry

)

I think my Media Studies teacher at my old school would have been perfect

, she wouldn't have to act or wear makeup. Lol.
Umbridge was so annoying. I think half way through OoTP i actually through it accross the room! I think Dame Judy Dench would have been great too! Also Pam Ferris, but she played Marge so i don't think that she's be playing ol' doloris. lol.
mmmmm Maryland cookies.....
Sorry comlpetely off topic.
As for the young marauders, i've got a funny feeling they'll get Dan to play James

Hmm, i think Judy Dench would be better as Madam Bones. But yes, if she was to play Umbridge, they would need a lot of padding.

But Back on topic though, yes Umbridge is in OOTP, not GOF. But I wonder who will play her though?

I think Umbridge will be very hard to cast. I have this mental image of her and can't possibly think of anyone who can play her. In my opinion whoever they get it might not do her justice.
They need someone with a squeaky girlish voice, that almost mocks everything you say. Someone short and with an evil smile.
I cannot think of anyone at all to play her.
Allie
Apr 24 2005, 03:38 AM
I definitely agree with Tarak. I have a stronger mental image of Umbridge than of any other characters, I suppose because her physical appearance is emphasized so much in the book. Not only do I have a mental image that cannot possibly replaced, but my mental image is of two particular black-and-white Mary GrandPre drawings from "Order of the Phoenix" -- click
here and
here to see, although I'm sure that many American-version readers can already guess which ones they are! Good luck coming up with an actor who can achieve
that standard, Warner Bros!

oh! mate i think tha't;s a mistake!
professor umbridge is the DADA teacher in the order of the phoenix

it will be really hard to cast a suitable person to play Umbridge, because Jo describes her in a very detailed way, and everyone has a clear picture of her in her/his mind.
i hope WB will find the right actress to play this awfull, ugly, old....hmmm....bat

She'll really be an effing cow. She made poor Harry right with that black quill that scars you everytime you write! Poor baby! Her voice sickens me. She sounds like a teeny to me... a teeny who needs help lowering her calories and blood sugar levels. She needs to go on a diet if you ask me.

Precisely what I was going to say, GH88, you took the words right out of my mouth, mate!!

I've noticed that many people tend to get the characters and actors mixed up.

There *is* a difference, people.

Couldn't agree more.
The lady in question is Annette Badlands - very good British actress and would be perfect for the part.
Matter of fact it was her face I could see all the time I was reading the books.
On another point someone suggested that Dan would probably play young James.
As they were all around 16 - 17 when Harry saw them in the penseive they could look quite grownup. Also the director may choose to make the penseive scenes a bit fuzzy and slightly out of focus - in that case they would maybe get away with the actor who played James in the movies so far - in the scenes involving the photo album and the mirror of Erised.
Just a thought.................

I have great confidence that they'll get a good actress for the role of Delores Umbridge. Two women who come to mind are Dame Judi Dench who has already been mentioned. She is a fabulous actress and a long-time friend of Maggie Smith. It would be great fun seeing them at odds with each other.
Another actress who would be an interesting choice would be Patricia Routledge who was on the BBC series "Keeping Up Appearances". She is mostly a comedic actress which is why I think she could give the role some sinister glee.
She is too tall for the way that Umbridge is described in the book and doubtless there are lots of actresses who could play the role. These are the two that come to mind.
And I am looking forward to watching the scene when Umbridge fires Trelawney.

Annette Badlands..I could definetly picture her playing Umbridge. If they don't chose Dan to play his father, I'd love to see who they'll pick, and on that note, I wonder if they'll even show the scene.
Patricia Routledge...I've heard of her. I'll just have to see her picture.

Greetings all - I looked up Annette Badland (no s) on www.imdb.com and found a photo of her from a production of "A Christmas Carol".
I agree, she would be an excellent choice. Do you suppose the folks from the casting director's team ever read these sites for guidance?

I think she colud portray Umbridge well. Good costumes and make-up...and i see, that she is Brittish.
Somebody mentioned Judi Dench. She is brilliant.
And a friend of Maggie Smith? ehhh good chances

No no no no no... The lady from Poltergeist would be PERFECT to play Umbridge. That;s how I pictured her when I read the book. I always picture a book as I movie when I'm reading it... Right down to the uplifting and dramatic score by John Williams or someone of the sort. Lately it's been Danny Elfman.

Greetings all - I know that this thread is almost dead... I looked up Zelda Rubinstein on www.imdb.com. She is an American - from Pittsburgh. So, she's out of the running.
Dame Judi Dench would be outstanding and I'm sure that she'd have fun with the role.
My vote still goes for Amanda Badland. I'd guess that she is up to the role.
We'll have to see who the director decides on. We know that Umbridge makes an appearance in HBP. It doesn't matter so much if it isn't a big name - readers of the book would recognize Umbridge in that brief scene, but she wouldn't be noticed by most movie-goers.
Cheers!

Hey guys, I don't know if anybody has thought of this before (and pardon me if someone has) but there's an actress- Zelda Rubenstein- she was in Sixteen Candles and Poltergeist- the first time I read OotP and read about Umbridge's 'breaty, little girl voice' I immediately thought of this actress. She's a very short woman with a little girly voice- I think she'd be great for the role!

Hey, and welcome to the forums! The Kathy Bates is a great idea, actually- I don't think she's too old for the part, at all. I was never under the impression that Dolores Umbridge was young, anyway.

So, yeah... thanks for pointing her out, she'd be great for the role!
