Amazon updates book seven placeholder
Posted By Matthew on 12-09-06 @ 7:57 PM - 16 comments | Link

Amazon.com has updated their placeholder page for the seventh Harry Potter book, which now says "publication date to be confirmed," making it sound as though a confirmation may be forthcoming. Prior to today, the page simply had a standard "Harry Potter Year 7" cover picture.

Of course, nothing regarding the release of book seven has been announced yet, as the year of its publication will hinge on Jo's completion of it, but in case you've forgotten, Order of the Phoenix pre-orders began on January 15, 2003 and Half-Blood Prince pre-orders began on December 23, 2004, so a summer 2007 release is certainly still a possibility for book 7.

Thanks to Alex and HarryLatino for the tip!

woot.gif Now that looks promising to me!!! Who-hoo!!! My money is on July 7th!!!

Do you reckon that maybe there's a new puzzle behind the door on its way for Christmas? JKR's been very quiet on that site since the Wombat's!! What a Christmas present that would be, eh?!

mushy
if this does't bring butterflies to your stomach, i don't know what would. I'm with you Louise, my moneys on the 7th!

July 7th would be a good date to put it on, that would just complete the series! And I know the conflict with the movie and everything, but still, it would be really cool! happy.gif (As you can tell, I've been leaning that way for a while now)

Do you suppose they are implying that they have already picked a realese date? Or just that they will pick one?

And about the website, I think that either she has been completely submerged in plans for the next book (amoung family and other stuff) or she is planning something really cool and just making us wait for it! Jo is very Christmasy, as shown in the books, so, yes, I think she has definately got something up her sleeve! wink.gif

I think it's unlikely that the book will be released this summer. It would make a whole ton of sense--Book 7 on 7/7/07.... And we know that JKRowling is sneaky like that. She likes to kind of ground her books in the real world (i.e. Nicholas Flamel being a real person; using pre-existing mythology and magical creatures). But... I don't know. This book is a monster. It's her last chance to tie up any loose ends. She can't just do it in the next book. And no matter what she says, I think the temptation to continue will be strong, even if its just to incude things she hasn't had time for, like Dean Thomas's history. This is kind of like... the grand finale. It's gotta be as perfect as she can get it. If I were writing this, I could see it being terribly hard to let go of it. Like sending a child off to college for the first time. Parents cram their children with little pearls of wisdom up until the last moment of separation. If I were Ms. Rowling, I think I'd want to hold on to my manuscript and baby it for a little longer, just to make absolutely sure.

And, coming from a fan's point of view, I'd like to draw out the anticipation a little longer. 2007 belongs to Movie 5. Let's leave Book 7 to 2008. I don't want it to be over next summer, with just the movies to look forward to, and perhaps other little charity works from Jo, like Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quiddich through the Ages. (Although I would LOVE to see, Hogwarts, A History.)
Sond
07/07/07 seems a nice date to me as well.

But the summer of 2007 is allready for movie 5 and I really don't think they will be competing against each other...
I do hope book 7 will appear next year cause I probably won't be able to wait till 2008 biggrin.gif

Anyway I put my name on the amazon mailing list to be warned when the book is able for pre-ordering, I assume by then the release date wil be known as well...
expelliarmus
I agree completely with Sond. It's all about business. Book and movie in the same year will create conflict.
We might have to wait for the book in summer 2008. It will give us more of a dramatic effect as the last book. santa.gif

I don't know whether or not i want the 7th book to come out in the summer or not because i would like it to come out in the summer because i can't wait to read it(though i wish it wasn't the last HP book sad.gif ) but i don't want it to come out in the summer because it would be a competion between the Order of the Phoenix film and the 7th book. I just wish that the 7th book wasn't the last one because i would like to see what harry, ron and hermione do in the rest of their lifes not just their school life.

You could always write fanfiction. And JK Rowling said she'd include an epilogue. I don't know, I think that once this story is done, it's done. Anything after Harry defeats Voldemort would be an anticlimax, I think.

I think seven is a good number for her to stop at. Any longer, and I miiight just be in danger of losing interest. Well, maybe not with something I've invested so much of myself in, but there have been other series that are nine, ten, twelve books long, and I just can't read that many of them. I get bored.
Capricorn
My main page still isn't working. sad.gif

But that would be wonderful! I've been suspecting something like that coming - I thought it would either be the release date or the title, but I suppose the date would make more sense. I can't wait!

07/07/07 would be incredible! Can you imagine the hype around that week? The last book and the 5th film released within a week of each other would have the Harry potter world alive like it's never been! I can't wait! woot.gif
beyondtheveil
Gosh, I'd love it to come out this summer, but somehow I don't see it happening. I mean, this is the LAST book. JK might want to take some more time on it, to make sure everything's right.

But no matter when it comes out, I can just see the tension in the air until the very first person reads it and finally someone knows how it ends.

I can't wait!

Love,

I dont think there will be any conflict at all if the book and the movie come out together. you just go and see the film, and then read the book!!!(or alternatively ... read the book and then see the film!!!)

Although, i don't think that they will come out together as it would be too much too get your head around. The book that people have been awaiting since the very first one came out, and the film that has got to be one of the darkest yet.
Albus Dumbledore
I almost as if the last book has to come out before the movie. The movie will start setting things up for those who dont read the books earlier and we will no what is truly important to the plot, and what is not. Think of this, if they make dramatics of the Locket in Grimmauld Place, then we can almost guess for sure that RAB is Regulus, and I, for one, would like to it be a surprise.. even though all believe it is Regulus. Too much hints are given in Book 5 to have the movie version of it be released before the end of the Series. I think 6 days is plenty of time for an average HP reader... I will have finished on the first day

~Albus
Usagi
It would be soo cool for it to be released next July 7. WHat a perfect date..and as for it conflicting with the movie opening, I doubt it....I think it would add even more hype to the movie opening..a great Harry Potter Summer..I predict mega bucks rolling in for that.
Can you imagine a week with nothing revolving around anything but harry potter? wow..
i don't know about ya'll but once i get my book, it will be read in 24 hours...I am just so excited about it..I hope it is soon...the suspense is killing me...lol wacko.gif

I don't think the movies are that accuate. And I don't think J.K.Rowling would allow them to give away more than that is in the book. I hope she still has as much control over the movies as she had before, although there are reasons to think she doesn't. Also, I don't think the movies can be considered canon... I don't think that we can look at what happens in the movies as proof or clues to what will happen later because they are separate entities, and they will emphasize what looks good, because they are a primarily visual medium.
rongotahowler
Itd be nice if the book was released on the 7/7
but at the same time, it might be put off because of the tragedy in London last year. The 7/7 bombings of course, are what Im referring to.
It may seem a bit stupid, but publishers might take that into consideration; Im not sure though.
Just a quick thought.
Louise
Ah....you know, I don't think it's stupid at all... unsure.gif I think that's probably the single most strong reason for not publishing on that date I've heard yet. I never even thought about that, and being British, I should be ashamed of myself...

It's the type of thing that us Brits really frown upon, so I don't think it's a stupid thing to consider at all. You're probably right. Well...if it's not 7/7, but the cogs are beginning to turn, what could that mean? From that news update, it certainly looks as though they're gearing up for an announcement very soon, doesn't it?

Well...I don't want to take this thread down the what-other-dates-could-there-be route because there's already a thread for that, but don't you think that it certainly does seem as though they're getting ready for an announcement?
quidditch rocks
i really want it to come the book to come out in 2007!!! I mean she can't put it off can she? I mean from what i heard they are already getting ready to film the next film, hbp,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So if they are already in the starting stages of the next film then she can't put off realeasing the book can she beacause they will want to have filmned all of the movies before the actors completely outgrow thier roles! I mean they are already pushing the butten. If she puts of realsing till 2008 then the poor film peopl will have to wait for anthor year instead of just realeasing them one year. she has always been two ahead of them and i don't think she can let that stop if she wants the movies to be a succse, can she? dry.gif Well I'll stop my rambling.
Louise
Well, I think that some things are more important than publishing dates and satisfying a rabid public for the movies....

I don't know, I guess we'll just have to wait and see smile.gif
Miss Minerva Mcgonagall
I agree, it does look as though they are readying themselves for an announcement but it is very hard to tell. It would be the best xmas present to get the release date! Does anyone know if the release date and the title usually get announced together? Though 07/07/07 would be the perfect date for the final book I don't think they would release it so close with the movie, they will want to make as much money as they can from the movie and the book, releasing them at the same time isn't the best way to do it!
RaigleihJohnson
Well I sure do hope it comes out on July 7th 2007. Because that's 777 and 777 is the good number!!!! Hahah, I am so excited. I hope the book is really long. I keep hearing JK keeps thinking of more to add, however she said it won't be as long as OotP, BUT I think it will be just as long, if not longer. That's at least what I am hoping.

Book 7 better answer all the questions. I am dying to figure out some things. Who's with meh?! Haha.
jakewax
I'd expect the release date to be 7/7/07 but it's kind of overlapping with the movie and you got to cut Jo some slack for not yet revieling the release date. It's the last book let it be a surprise. Ya never know maybe will get the release date as a new years present! biggrin.gif
padfoot17
They have to put the 7th book out on 7/7/07. That would be a great. But the book would take away Warner Bros glory. I read that somewhere. But we are all waiting on this book. The movie can wait we already know whats going to happen. The need to ask the actors and actresses and the author. If the actors are really into the books they will want the book to come out first. Plus this 07 the year I graduate. Or they can put out both on those dates. Half the popualation can watch the movie and the other half can get the book then when the movie is over the people reading the book will be done. Then they can switch. Both groups crying cause Sirius died and the book series is over. But really by the time the movie is over the book readers will be done.
Killian
The terrorist attacks in London should not effect the release date, terrorists shouldn't be allowed to affect our lives in any way and yeah, Harry Potter books are "just books" but they shouldn't effect us in any way. If the books are released on July 7th then so be it, considering it's he seventh book, a 07/07/07 release date would be kinda cool. Looking forward to it! biggrin.gif.
Hollister_Witch
I was discussing this with my dad the other day and neither me or him think it will come out next year......First of all, the movie will be coming out on July 13th and on DVD around Christmas next year... We don't think that people want the publicity of the movie to mix with the publicity of the book, it would be too much publicity at once for one series. Second of all, i dont think Jo will want to release it on the date of the London bombings, considering she's british herself. We think the book will be released in the early to mid spring of 2008....No I don't want to believe it, but its just the facts...... I can't help but want it to come out tommorow, but its just not reality....

It's not the terrorists we're bowing to. It's the people they killed and their families who are left behind. Having to deal with their grief while people are squeeing over something as trivial as a book seems a little in bad taste to me.

Looks like they are readying themselves for an announcement soon though, so who knows?

Where I'm coming from it, why should it matter? People look forward to books, movies, video game releases, new clothing lines, building openings, everything. Should the whole country come to stand still on the date of a terrorist attack or death? I don't think so. I know people who were affected by the London attacks, and I doubt they'd want the world to come to a stand still because they're remembering their loved ones.
Animagus_Black
I doubt it will be released so close to the release date of OotP and the OotP game as people will want time to finish the game and watch the movie and buy it and that sort of stuff. Most Fans wont want to many things coming out close to each other. Just think if the book comes out on the 7th, people will be reading and re-reading it and then they'll get the game and that will interfere with there reading then the movie will come out and theyll watch that then ull want to re-visit the movie so ull go see it again or read the book again so it will just ruin everything if it is released that close to the other release dates though i wouldnt mind it smile.gif My bet is mid-October

Publication Date for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

01/02/07

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be published on Saturday 21st July 2007 at 00:01 BST in the UK and at 00:01 in the USA. It will also be released on Saturday 21st July in other English speaking countries around the world.

Thought those who don't go on her website would like to know that.
El Barto
I also found an article, here, with Rowling saying that its going to come out on July 21st. And you gotta forgive me, but when does the next movie come out? Is it also July? Like I said in another thread, the two are separate. One doesn't go hand in hand with the other, know what I mean? Unless I'm completely wrong. Does Rowling submit to the merchandise or does she not really care and does what she wants, or what her publishers want?
etphonehome
The OotP movie is released in cinemas in the UK and US on 13th July (a few other countries on 11th), so that gives us an 8 day gap between film and book release, we will definately all be hyped up ....hang on to your hats guys we're in for a bumpy ride!!!

Um...Merope, you seemed to have missed the latest. The book will be released on 21st July. I am rather sad about this...isn't anyone else? I mean this is it, the end boo hoo! Interesting thought, anyone else think that annoucing this just 2 days after Dans Equus pictures caused such a fracas is a bit of a coincidence? Takes the heat off a bit doesn't it?

Ok, the thread I was responding to was deleted in the midst of my replying. I'd had one locked while I was posting before, but that was wierd! laugh.gif Anyway, this is still relevent at any rate.

I am extremely upset with this release date. At first it seemed so ridiculous to me that I thought it was another Pillar of Storgé-type hoax. I had to look at the Bloomsbury and Scholastic websites before I bought into it. It's only a week after the OotP release! What's the point in practically overlapping two HUGE events? Is JKR trying to spite Warner Bros by diverting attention from the movie?

I realized this a week or so ago, but if you remember back, Order of the Phoenix and the PoA movie were released the same month. They even changed from July, when they normally release, to June to coincide with the film date. The idea is to build off of the popularity of one on the other. releasing the book after the film is a good idea too. People who are die-hard will probobly see the film opening weekend if they can (I sure will). The book comes out next weekend, and will build off of the buzz from the previous weekend, and the films get a boost from people excited about the impending book release. Just because Harry Potter is popular doesn't mean that Scholastic and Bloomsbury won't market it. They would be stupid to not capitalize on the popularity of the film release. Remember that Jo doesn't pick release dates. She just writes the books. That's up to Scholastic and Bloomsbury. They no doubt talked with Warner Brothers and everyone thought that this would be a good move for everyone. and it is.

what I have a problem with is the date they picked. I get why you'd want it within a week of the film, I guess. But why not pick an important date? Of course, I get the thing about the bombings and 7/7/7. Plus it's before the film release, which has additional problems, as I said earlier. Perhaps 7/31 was too far away? Another thing, I guess that no one besides die-hard harry potter fans would get 7/31, so it doesn't really help from a marketing perspective. harry potter 7: 7/7/7 looks good on a poster. July 31st isn't really much better than July 21st from a marketing perspective, and the 21st has the benefit of being close to the release date.

I'm going to go to the b&n party. Last time my wife (then my girlfriend) didn't understand why I would want to stay home that weekend to read a book rather than drive to see her (she lived 5 hours away at the time). I lost major points on that, but later she read the books, and was like, "baby, I love you, but if I had been a fan when the book came out, I wouldn't have driven to see you either." So I guess she understood. This year we're married, and she's totally coming with me to the party. I guess we'll have to get two books this time! laugh.gif

I was wondering whether or not there will be a competition like last time.

If you remember, JKR held a midnight moment reading session at Edinburgh Castle and kids from all over were invited to enter a draw to be present at this event.

I know I entered for my daughter who was really disappointed not to get a place...still, who needed JKR to read her the first chapter, she had me!

NB. Just checked Bloomsbury Press, no info on there.
mayfair
Well 21.07.2007 may not be 7/7/7, but it sure has a lot of features that tie it to the Harry Potter Universe. 21 is 7x3, we know that number three is quite prominent in Harry Potter series, in fact there's a discussion thread on this somewhere in the forums. It also happens to the the third Saturday of the month and the third week, so those too may have played a role. But I agree with those who point out that the release date was pushed back, not only to avoid the 7/7/7 anniversary of London blasts that would a sore spot for many fans, but also to avoid the movie suffering from a drop in collections. Though, the movie may end up suffering either way because there definitely will be drop in collections the weekend of the book release, one must remember that the maximum collections are in the first weekend and they would want to avoid that coming down.
SpinJam
So if you had to choose - would you see the movie, or get the new book. Hypothetically of course, if you had to choose - absolutely HAD to choose between the two?

Mod Edit: You know better then to post a short post SpinJam.

Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god.

That's all I've been able to say all day.

Thank god I logged into facebook before school started, and just *coincidently* happened to check out my Harry Potter group. (I can't believe it either, that I picked *that* moment to go, when they'd just released the date.) And there it was, in huge capital letters: the release date had been announced. So soon! So, naturally, I went to JK Rowling's site to see for myself, and there it was. July 21 - just six months from now.

Six Months. Oh. My. God.

And then, of course, my disbelief turned to extreme excitement and squealing in science to all my friends. We're all having a midnight sleepover, and a party. I can't believe it.

But now that the release date has sunk in (six months!!) I can't believe this is actually going to end. I'm going to sound so melodramatic here, but ah well...

Harry Potter is almost over. Has it sunk in for anyone yet? I still can't believe it. Six months is nothing. The year is passing so quickly, that it's going to come sooner than I expect, I know it. And I'm feeling so sad. It's going to end so soon. I'd expected summer 2008, or fall of 2007. But six months? Along with the fifth movie? Never. (July '07 wll officially become a holiday month for all HP fans.)

I mean, my slight (*grins*) obsession with it has been a huge part of my life for four years now, and counting. (Thank god I had that stupid crush on Rupert Grint, or there's a possibility I wouldn't have come to love the books.) They've been my escape, really. And then I was introduced to the Harry Potter fandom, (best one out there, in my opinion wink.gif), and that was it - I was hooked. I've made friends and everything. Seriously have. They've gotten me through a lot, just the books. It's been huge. Seriously huge.

I still can't believe it's coming out in six months. I'm getting so sappy about it, but it's really the end of Harry Potter. Seriously guys, what are we going to do come July?
eagleanimagous
All I can say is YES! It's coming it's coming! I am a little upset too though. This is the end. But still, It's coming It's coming! haha. i can't wait until july 21. This is going to be great. I'm definately buying it as soon as it comes out. I am rereading the series for like the billionth time (like i always do when a new book comes out). I hope all turns out well for everybody, I am curious to see which two characters die that weren't supposed to though, and why Harry gets a new pet.
mosbydee
As silly as it sounds, I'm more scared than happy. I was talking to Lee and we realized that the end marked many things (most happily that her dissertation over Harry Potter will include book 7), but none so tragic, to me, than the thought of losing friends that I still feel like are alive. I really, really do not know how I can handle it if someone I love dies and I love so many of the people that Jo has introduced me to. Professor Snape, Hermione, Ron, Hagrid, Lupin, Harry--I mean, these people feel like my professors, my classmates, my friends and I hate the thought that they may not survive! It's really eating me up, but I know that six months is just going to be a long wait for me, during which I will worry myself sick and enjoy conversations with friends, discussing the end (who knows, I may even get in on the Las Vegas action-- rolleyes.gif kidding), and hoping that it all works out well in the end.
The one bright spot, for me, is the thought that Jo has spoken of writing Hogwarts: A History, which I think will be fascinating. Just my thoughts.
Esrb99
I know exactly how you feel, but hey! lets make this the big one, eh! They'll most likely be a huge thing in Chicago again, lets all go hand and meet there!

By The Way, Where did she say she might write Hogwarts: A HIstory??? I nned to see this interview or whatever....

I am so excited! I am so thrilled! This is the moment I have been looking forward to. I told my mom in December (22) that the book would be published within 7 months...and this is one day short of 7 months...so, I wasn't that far off. I am scared for all of the characters, but I know that J.K. will do what is best for everyone and I know that Harry (and the Order) will prevail...as to who makes it out alive? I don't know. I am now waiting for the book cover so I can have another piece of the puzzle...that old saying you can't read a book by its cover isn't necessarily true...you can get hints off the cover and I will look at every cover I can (American, British children's, British adult, and every other country I can get to look at)...Anywho...we all collectively hold our breath and wish for the best!

I expected July 31, 2007 for reasons that should be obvious.

I understand why it would be cool if it was released on the 7th but I am quite happy it's coming out on the 21st because that day is my birthday!! I turn 18 (wow!) I'm sure it's going to be a birthday present and that way I won't have to buy it myself! (It's always nice to save money hehe)

I really don't like that that's the release date for books only in English, because for the book in Spanish I assume it's going to be released a couple of months later.

I'm going to read it in English and then in Spanish like I always do, but it would be so much better that it were translated sooner so the books in both languages were released on the same date.
Moon(I luv you Luna)
I found out the date when we were in the middle of a resterant, and i just started screaming "Yes! Yes! Yes!" and everyone was looking at me weird ... all well, i am weird, so it wasn't much of a difference really ...

Here it's coming out on a staurday, so i won't have to suffer a day at school before i can read it and it's coming out at 12:01 pm, so i don't have to spend all night reading it!

Yay me! happy.gif

I actually found out the release date through a pm. A pm buddie has sent me a pm to discuss news for a band and she told me something like "Have you heard? The 21st!" and i was like huh.gif trying to figure out what would happen on the 21st. And then i visited the home page of VTM and i saw it was the release date of HP7 the 21st! And i heard it on the radio too! I am sooooo happy!
BTW, do you know guys if i can preorder it through ebay or something? I live in Greece so i don't know how many days it will take them to bring it here. Plus it is always more expensive in Greece the english version than in US or UK. So...can you help me?
