My friends and I have been debating this for some time at school;

Which Hogwart's classes are like our general school subjects?

I think there are a few obvious ones, such as

Potions=Science or

Potions=Math...

and probably Transfiguration=English

But what about all the others? And does anyone else ever think about this kinda stuff? Or am I just completely mental!? wacko.gif biggrin.gif

Please, step into my office and enter your musings...::flourishes hands::cool.gif
Hermione_Weasley
ha ha ha, no, you're not completely mental, I've thought of that too, and this is what I've come up with:

Science: potions
P.E.: quidditch practice/flying lessons
History/Social Studies: History of Magic
English/Language Arts: Transfiguration
Math: Arithmancy

Please tell me whether you agree or disgree, or if you would like to add anything, I would love to hear your opinions!
El Barto
Thats an interesting question smile.gif

I'd say this:

Potions = chemistry, only each and every year sad.gif

transfiguration = see below smile.gif

Charms = English or another language. Its more about the motions and the way you say things.

Defense Against the Dark Arts = PE, only because there is somewhat more freedom (from Harry's perspective), and you have the opportunity to practice.

Care of Magical Creatures =

Divination = study hall mellow.gif

Herbology = biology

In my opinion, Arithmacy and Astronomy are pretty much the same in the real world (only not with a magical background). Same wtih ancient runes and history of magic being...history.
etphonehome
Not that I can remember much about school lessons...it was so so long ago in a land far away.....

Potions is definately Chemistry

Herbology is Biology

Transfiguration would be Art and Design (think transforming nothing into something)

Devination would be ICT contacting people magickly through psychic messages (PM)

History of Magic has to be History of the French renaissance (1977, Mrs Still...slept for a year)

Defense against the Dark Arts...Physics (if you ever met my physics teacher you'd know why!)

Great topic by the way!

El Barto
What about the mood of each class? For me, the mood was everything. What I mean is, chemistry itself was tough, but the teacher made it pleasant. My Spanish 2 class was horrible. So, for me, the classes based on the mood (mostly taken from the movies I guess) would be:

Potions = Spanish 2 (my teacher was evil, but good inside if you think Snape is good still)

Transfiguration = Design and Human Behavior in my university...exact same attitude and everything as McGonnagal

I guess I'll leave it at that, don't want to bore you guys.
sw33t_Evanna
No you're not mental. I already have changed the title of my subjects to make them more intersting. In my textbooks i write:
This book is the property of the
Half-Blood Prince
And then i cancel the "half-Blood Prince" with a single line and write my name. All my notebooks have Potions or Herbology and other stuff written on them. My ideas are:-

Maths=Airthmancy

French=Ancient Runes...well it is about tranclation and stuff.

Botany from Bio=Herbology...it is about plants.

History= History of Magic o course.

English=i really think it easy so i have matched it up with Charms.

Chemistry= It can be Potions, I don't know...i call it Transfiguration too cause it's tough.
Aguamenti353
Hmmm well this is what I think:

History of Magic would be like History, but I also think its like my Bio class because I feel like I am about to fall asleep in that class.

Transfiguration would be like French because it's about altering things: transforming animals, and translating words.

Flying: P.E., of course. smile.gif

Potions I compare to English because my teacher is absolutely EVIL just like Snape! mad.gif

laugh.gif Thats all I got....
Marieke
Hi, let me add something too:

History of Magic would be History, because of obvious reasons. I don't think the teachers should be compared with subjects - they're teachers, not subjects themselves, of which we're speaking.

Potions could be compared to Chemics, though potions have a meaning with them - a chemistry set doesn't. Potions could be compared to farmacy, if it's healing, or something like that...

Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures would be combined into Biology. Biology is a wide subject, which, in high school, includes plants, as well as creatures. Biology isn't as "live" as Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures class, though. It's mostly books in high school. It'll improve in university - 50/50, they say.

Flying and Physical Education, obviously. I'd be surprised if one would think it otherwise.

Maths and Arithmancy would be accurate as well. J.K. Rowling never has let us look into those classes, but what I understood about it, it's like Maths.

Ancient Runes is like languages - whatever you'll take. Wasn't it Hermiony that complained about the meaning of "eihwaz" being something else in her OWLs? For me, the language would be English, because I'm Dutch, and we translate English (or French or German, if you chose to have those subjects, which I didn't) and for me, Latin also (or Greek, one of the two, we had to chose). I'd be more like Latin for me, actually, because I can just read English and understand it without having to translate it - Latin you have to translate first, then try to understand the meaning.

If it's about toughness, Transfiguration would be Physica, because however hard I study it, I can't understand it at all! But then, Transfiguration would be Chemistry for a classmate of mine, because he doesn't understand that at all, etc. etc.
So, looking at this, I don't think the toughness should be compared to some subjects you have difficulties with, either. Like the teacher.

I don't have theories about Charms or DaDA at the moment, sorry... tongue.gif

After the Burial
Here are my thoughts:

Transfiguration - English
Charms - English (same as Transfiguration because they seem to be a necessity for life)
Herbology - Biology
DADA - Social Studies/Psychology
Potions - Chemistry
Arithmancy - Math/Physics
History of Magic - History
Care of MC - Phy Ed
Muggle Studies - Foreign Language
Ancient Runes - Weird Elective?
Divination - Home Ecomoics (all those tea leaves)
Unknown Subject - ???
Potterfan7
umm..

Chemistry is like potions to me because not only do I hate my teacher but I am no very good at it. The teacher always finds new ways to torture me.
beekyk2001
Hogwart's Classes In The Real World

I would deffintly have to say Chemistry. because of adding all the chemicals together, stirring, using a pliers, etc. also maybe disliking the teacher.

Also maybe if there is a self defense class in gym, then that could relate to DADA class.

That's all I can think of for the moment.
TH3 CHOS3N ON3
math- arithmancy
science potions
history- history of magic
english-charms, transfiguration
astronomy- astronomy
phys ed- DADA or Care of MC
foreign language-Ancient runes or muggle studies
Study Hall- study hall lol

Sabrina_Rose_Snape
Well here are my thoughts. . .
English= Mugge studies/ Transfiguration
Maths= Arithmancy
Science= Potions
French= Ancient Runes
Food= Herbology
I.C.T= Muggle Studies
P.E= Flying Lessons/ Quittdicth training

Cool thread biggrin.gif
tigerlily231105
i used to relabel the classes on my class schedule to HP classes XD
Belatrix Lestrange
Hmm ok all the time when we would play Hp games at school(turning school into hogwarts) this was a struggle on matching the classes:

Potions-science
PE- Quidditch/flying lessons
Art: Transfiguration
Language Arts/English- Charms
Math-arithmacy
comp tech- Divination

that's what me and my friends would always do....
DeeD
well..

Flying and Physical Education.

Ancient Runes is like math.. boring subject.

Botany is Herbology..it's all about plants.

Chemistry maybe It can be Potions.

Arithmancy could be like Physics.
love_angel_music_baby
I'd say

history is like Defense against the dark arts when Umbridge taught it, all we do is take notes and read the book.
English is like Charms, it's pretty fun...
science is like Muggle Studies, we never do anything but study objects like microscopes and magnifying glasses etc.
megan_de_lioncourt
Maths - Arithmancy
P.E - Quidditch
Science - Potions
English - Charms or Transfiguration
History - History of magic.
Another Language - Maybe Ancient Runes

But you can actually do divination now, thats a subject that both wizards/witches and muggles share
=]
obwhp
[font=Tahoma][size=3][b][color=#CC0000]
i think that:

math = aritmancy
foreign language = muggle studies
history = history of magic
chemistry = potions
biology = herbology
english = either charms or transfiguration

i'm going to be thinking about this all day now! biggrin.gif
hterry1969
Well, here are my thoughts....

Transfiguration - Art class because your changing things

Herbology - biology

Potions - chemistry

Arithmancy - math

Ancient Runes - Languages

Astronomy - obviously, Astronomy

Care of Magical Creatures - zoology (this was offered at my highschool)

Charms - could be a language since it's about how you say as well as what you say

Muggle Studies - Social Sciences

Hermonie4ever
I have never really wondered that... until you brought it up. Now, let me think.

History - History of Magic
Chemistry - Potions
Gym - Flying
Botany - Herbology
Armithacy - Math

No clue about any others though.
Jef1234
Potions- chemistry

DADA- home economics or Family Consumer Sciences Education bcuz it gets you ready for life

CFMC (Magical Creatures)- Ag

History with Binns- History

can't think of any others
Sypher1590
social studies/history of magic
potions/science
defense against the dark arts/?
divination/?
charms/?
astronomy/astronomy
Xavira
For me, I've thought about this alot, it's how I make muggle school interesting. And seeing as how I'm a college student, some of my matchups are kind of...sad. You'll see.

Astronomy = Astronomy (except we don't learn anything about constallations, no wonder I've never been able to find Orion's belt, been looking in the wrong sky all these years).

Potions = Chemistry (most unfortunately my first chemistry teacher was the equivillent of a blindfolded Neville standing in front of a cauldron mixing random ingrediants for an hour. the one thing you never want your teacher to say is "at least I think that's what happens")

Transfiguration = English or Art In both you're transfiguring something mundane (words or pencils, etc) into something beautiful.

DADA = At my school, I chose to equate this with "Beginning Judo" it seemed the best fit.

Arithmancy = Math, all numbers

Ancient Runes = Any foreign language, especialy ones with non-english alphabets

Charms = Physics, why? because most charms seem to defy the laws of physics, making objects fly and the like.

History of Magic = Any history class of course

Divination = Divination, though I study this outside of school

Herbology = Agriculture

Care of Magical Creatures = Creature related classes (seriously, my school offers a whole semester course on what cows eat).

Anyways, those are my opinions lol.
Mr_Khan
i think that
herbology=botany
care of magical creatures=zoology
history of magic=history or social studies
arithmancy=maths
potions=chemistry
charms=physics
DADA=Martial arts
forsaken_wolfess
Well:

History is like History of Magic. (How many of you are reading this post and going 'No DUH!!!!!'? All of you? Thought so.)
Potions is like chemistry.
Herbology is like botany.
Charms (And some people aren't gonna like me for this) is sort of like english or *shudder* math. It's something that's sort of your bread and butter.

And I've had a creative writing teacher that did a MEAN Sybill Trelawny. biggrin.gif
PottyHead
Hah I was thinking about this yesterday because I really didn't want to go to school so I was like 'oooh if I was at Hogwarts I would have such and such instead'

So my timetable for yesterday would have looked like:
Drama - Transfiguration (kind of linking it with acting - becoming different characters and such)
Media - I cant remember what I put here I think it was DADA because I couldn't think of anything that would fit media studies and I wanted to do DADA smile.gif
English - Charms or Divination
History - History of Magic

And those are all the subjects I take but there are more obvious things like:

Maths - Arithmancy
Astronomy - Physics (we did astronomy in physics when I did that)
Herbology - Home economics or something like that
Potions - Chemisty
Ancient Runes - Languages

forsaken_wolfess
I've done that a few times with my classes too. Somtimes I'll even like do a roleplay in my warped Harry Potter head. Some guy will say "It's three fourths", but in my head, he'll be saying "The correct charm is Lumos". I know I'm crazy.

I thought of another one...
Care of magical creatures: animal science.
MrsMcPhee4EvaInHeart.
Transfiguration - Art.
Herbology - Science.
Potions - Chemistry.
Arithmancy - Math.
Ancient Runes - History.
Astronomy - Science.
Care of Magical Creatures - Science.
Charms - English/Grammar.
Muggle Studies - Science.
Quittich - P.E.
Divination - Social Studies.
Defense Against the Dark Arts - P.E.
WEASLETTE...GINNY POTTER
Before i reply i would just like to say that it feels good to be back after so many days smile.gif . My computer had come up with some problems and that's the reason i had to be away...

Well...This is a wonderful topic we've got here. I've always thought about this. There is definitely a close relation between the HP world and our world (thanks to JKR's characters). This is what I think:

Herbology-Botany
Both the subjects deal with the plants. So undoubtedly they are similar.

Care of Magical Creatures-Zoology
Save the magical background both the subjects deal with the knowledge about animals in particlular. Care of Magical Creatures has the added information about how to take care of animals whereas Zoology does not.

Transfiguration-Chemistry
There are spells in transfiguration for changing things from one form to another. In chemistry two or more chemicals are mixed to get a completely new product. So in a way there is a transfiguration operation happening.Transfiguration is related to chemistry as a whole i.e. physica chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and stoichiometry.

Potions-Chemistry
Potions is particulary similiar to inorganic chemistry where one has to deal only with chemicals.

Charms- Languages
As charms deals with the way you say things and also the motions of hand while speaking the incantation, it is similar to languages where one is taught more or less the same things.

Defence against the Dark Arts-physical education
well..this one was a little difficult for me to relate. the reason for relating to physical education is because in PE we are taught skills, tolerence, etc. So more or less similar to DADA.

Arithmancy-physics
Well...this comparison is basically based on the complexity of the subjects. From what Hermione said arithmancy seemed quite difficult to me, and from the introduction of physics in my life, i've found it difficult (not to mention the dip in my science marks because of that subject). So, thats why i've compared these two.

History of Magic, Astronomy are similar to History and Astronomy of the real world sans the magical background.
Moon(I luv you Luna)
Hmmm ... i felt so sure i'd posted here, but apparently not.

Transfiguration-Art
I like to think of this as art, because in art, you create new things. It'd be more like a sturdy art subject, like Design or something, because Transfiguration deals with what is there, wheras in just general art, you can let your mind do whatever it likes.

Charms-Photography
In photography, you change something, into something else, like a negative print into a positive, and you can change the properties of a picture, make it blury, brighter, etc. In Charms, you change the properties on a thing, into something else. Plus both can be rather fun subjects and times.

Potions-Food Technology
Everyone thinks chemistry, but i think cooking, because you're adding lot's of different ingrediants together, to make one thing-just like in potions. You even cook the potions on fires. laugh.gif

Herbology-Biology
This was closest i could get. In bio, you learn about the world around you, and nature and whatnot, and Herbology is, well, plants. Which could come under Biology.

Defence Against the Dark Arts-Self Defence/P.E
Your're basically learning skills how to defend yourself, and in PE, you learn how to co-opperate with other's and how sometimes you need help with something (A team sport, or a duel) and sometimes you must learn to work alone (traped by yourself and you have to duel your way out, and a one-person sport like tennis or something).

History of Magic-History
Well, this one is self-explanitory, really. Both learn the history of their world.

Astronamy-Astronamy
Well, duh.

Divination-Careers Advice
This was a difficult one, all right? In divination, you predict the future, and in careers advice, you, well ... sort out what you want to do with your future career. A very obtuse reason, but i've made it fit. biggrin.gif

Muggle Studies-Sociology
In this subject, you learn why a person would make a certain choice, or how a person opperates. That's basically Muggle studies, which teaches how a muggle works (Which is just an ordinary person, so it's basically the same thing)

Care of Magical Creatures-Zoology
This isn't actually a subject that is taught at my school, but it is a University subject, and basically both are dealing with animals. Though we don't deal with magical ones. tongue.gif

Arithmancy-Maths
They both deal with number's, and though it can sometimes be hard, there are people out their who like both subjects (Hermione, and my maths teacher). laugh.gif

Study of Anceint Runes-A Forrien Language Class
Because, i think in Ancient Runes, you learn how to inerpret the meanings, and that's basically like learning a whole new language. happy.gif
E.Austen
Potions: Chemistry

DADA: Self-defense courses

Astronomy: Astronomy

Arithmancy: Mathematics

Divination: Counseling happy.gif

Transfiguration: Practical arts such as carpentry or metals

Muggle Studies: Social Sciences

gryffindorgirlie
I think science is a bit like transfiguration. For instance, the other day in class we were making what us british would call 'slop dosh' into sedimentary rocks (the express way!) and in a week they were all solid. Therefore turning one thing into another!

P.S. If your wondreing what 'slop dosh' is basically its another name for mud mixed with water. biggrin.gif
PottyHead
I was thinking today in my Media Class that Media is kind of like Muggle Studies.
Yes - I really do nothing in school =]

'Cause in Media you look at newspapers and magazine covers and film posters and all of those kind of things and analyse and deconstruct them and I can just imagine Harry, Ron and Hermione sat in Muggle Studies staring at a rubber duck or something and working out why muggles use them and things =P

x
nicky potter
Potions -> Chemistry
Transfiguration -> English
Charms -> see above
Defense Against the Dark Arts -> PE a class that many look foward to have fun if you have the right teacher

Divination - >its that one elective that you took because you heard its easy lol

Herbology -> biology

thats what i've got so far biggrin.gif
BRoyals
Pretty much the same as everyone else tongue.gif

Potions-Chemistry

Herbology-Biology

Arithmancy-Math

Charms-Science

Muggle Studies-Social Studies
DeSs
This is interesting, because it turns out to be like Muggle classes have lots of the same than Wizards ones, but I'll always prefer the last ones tongue.gif
Ok, it's basically as most of you have said before:
Potions: Chemistry
History of Magic: History and Laws
Transfiguration and Charms: couldn't think of anything that resemble those, because they're so super great that nothing is the same sad.gif
Defense Against the Dark Arts: at high school, no one, but it'd be great
Herbology: Biology
Divination:
QUOTE
Careers Advice
tongue.gif Right!
Astronomy: Astronomy, Natural Sciences or Physics at school
Study of Ancient Runes: Literature, especially old literature, and languages
Arithmancy: Maths and maybe Physics
Care of Magical Magical Creatures: Biology and Zoology
Muggle Studies: History too, or as Moon said, Sociology, Antropology
harryp0tter87
Well, I think it would go:
Potions -- Chemistry
Charms -- English
Ancient Runes -- Old Literature
Transfiguration -- Math classes
Herbology -- Nature Science
Care of Magical Creatures -- Zoology
Defense Against the Dark Arts -- maybe a Real Events class or something ?

Just my personal opinions!!
harrypotterlover1024
Ohh i have always thought about this, super glad I found this topic!

potions: chemistry
herbology: biology but just learning about plants
arithmancy: math
ancient runes: latin
defence against the dark arts: hmm, self defence class?
charms and transfiguration i cant really think of anything
muggle studies: psychology
history of magic: history
astronomy: astronomy
care of magical creatures: animal care? ha i dont know if thats a class but some schools have farms and maybe it could be.

harrypotterfreak13
i guess...i'm taking creative cookery and that could be like potions a little bit and then there's the obvious ones that every has said so i won't repeat.
koukaki
History of magic-History
exciting but with our teacher is soooo boring we fall asleep....
forsaken_wolfess
I hate to say it, but a couple times I have pretended my classes in the real world were the ones in Harry Potter. I've just like pretended the plants we were observing in biology were, like, venomous tentacula or whatever. That sort of thing. biggrin.gif Heh heh. I worry about my sanity sometimes.
Rachelle-is-a-Ravenclaw
i think chemistry is most like potions for me laugh.gif laugh.gif , mixing the reactants together, the right way obviously.
