CHAPTER 1


"Potter where were you last night? It was a full moon, people were sneaking out and I need help corralling them all, and I couldn't find those stupid friends of your either" Lily Evans questioned her bright green eyes brimming with anger as they looked at a seventh year boy with black mess hair he could never tame.

"Come on Evans, please don't tell me you reported this. We were out for a very good reason, you can't report this," begged James as he pulled his hand slowly through his hair.

"What is that reason? I would really like to know," Lily snapped back moving her hands to her small waist.

"I can't tell you, but I really want to, trust me on this" James pleaded removing his hand from his hair and reached for Lily's right arm.

"Don't touch me Potter, and I will let it go this time but next time you won't be so lucky," Lily retorted moving away from James then turn around; Her auburn hair whipping him in the face as she left.

"Prongs what was that about? You ask her out again?" Sirius Black joked coming up behind James and hitting him on the back.

"No, she wanted to know where we were last night. She didn't mention it last month or the month before but she isn't very happy about me not being there to help keep order," James answered slowly.

"She wants to know?! Well you can't tell her. You might even have to stay behind next month. We can't have her and anyone else knowing," raved Sirius.

"Padfoot calm down. Next time you and Wormtail will go with Mooney and I'll stay here and keep Evans from wanting to know anymore, that works doesn't it," James calmed.


" I don't know, it took all of us to control him last time, I don't think wormtail and I can do it alone," Sirius pondered.

"Hey guys, how are you? Sorry Padfoot about the cut you know I didn't mean to" apologized Remus Lupin as he joined the conversation.

"Prongs is going to have to stay behind next time. Evans in getting nosy and we don't want her to keep an eye on us" Sirius explained.

"It is time for class boys, don't let me catch you tardy" called professor Slughorn as he went into his classroom. The three boys looked at each other before rushing off in three different directions to their own classes.

James arrived in transfiguration to find every seat full except the one next to Lily and he wondered if today she would say yes. He had often asked her out and every time she had said no, but James was just waiting for when she became so annoyed she would just say yes to make him leave her alone. Another trip to Hogsmead was coming up and then there was the Christmas feast, she would say yes to at least the Christmas feast. All she had to do there was sit next to him and she was doing that right now.

A note landed on Lily's desk addresses to her. She cautiously unfolded it. The note read 'Evans would you like to go on the Hogsmead trip with me or maybe the Christmas feast?' Another attempt to get her on a date with him only this time he succeeded, she said yes.

CHAPTER 2

"she agreed?! how did that happen? she never accepted before. Why now? quetioned sirius as the four boys walked into the great hall. Peter had just shown up when James had come running in undoubtably happy.

"i don't know, padfoot, maybe she was tired of me asking and decided to get it over with," James attempted to answer.

"if she had wanted to get it over with she wouldn't have said yes to both but just one of them,"reasoned Lupin.

"that's true, maybe she is warming up to the idea of liking you prongs," joked sirius with peter giving a nervous laugh.

"it's about time she has had seven years," joined in Lupin.

"can we eat now?" peter pettigrew interrupted timidly, his sunny blonde hair falling into his eyes and a shy smile spread across his face.

"sure wormtail go ahead and eat. so sirius which girls are going to be lucky enough to get to go with you to hogsmead and to the feast?" Lupin asked as he looked at the food in front of him.

"i don't know, i would ask alice but longbottom would kill me. so maybe Jennifer Hoxe to hogsmead and kaylen Harmen to the feast, and ana Brinin if one says no," sirius annoced thoughtfully.

"poor ana she doesn't stand a chance" smirked Jennifer as she ran her fingers through sirius's long, think, black hair before sitting down.

"oh really, and why would that be?" sirius flirted back moving over to give the blue eyed blonde more room to sit down, who didn't care and sat on sirius's lap.

"because you are taking me to hogsmead and Kaylen likes you too much to turn you down," jennifer answered smoothly.

"and who should remus here ask?" inquired sirius, putting his arm around jennifer and looking into her eyes.

"hmm... maybe that Molly girl, she would have no grounds to turn him down, she IS dating that Weasley guy, Authur isn't? anyways he could ask out Kaylen ans sirius here could take me to the feast or even Ana brinin would do even though she is out of remus's league," laughed Jennifer.

"so if i asked you, you'd turn me down," mocked Lupin as she got up and began to walk away from the table.

"where is he going... he isn't really going over to ana is he... she won't say yes... she is waiting for sirius to ask her... and she is out of his league" jennifer reasoned. Everyone watched as Lupin went over to ana and talked to her for a few minutes before she turned back around and Lupin began to come back to the table with a shocked face on his face.

"what did she say?" james questioned.

"yes" Lupin whispered, and remained standing there, not making any move to sit back down.

"that's the way remus, now we just need to get Peter a date. So which girl do you want peter?" Sirius both congratulated and asked.

"molly" stammered peter as he looked at the floor embarrassed.

"ok, i'll see if she will but you can't talk to her until hogsmead, not one word, you understand?" Sirius offered Roughly as jennifer moved to a seat ans sirius stood.

"yes, sirius" studdered peter timidly. Sirius stood and strutted down the table to where molly and weasley were sitting.

"hey molly, would you do me a favor?" sirius asked smoothly.

"what can i do for you sirius" molly replied just as cool.

"would you go to hogsmead with one of my friends and me? i would really like that," sirius continued.

"yes, i would love to," blurted molly and weasley rushed out of the great hall mad, quickly followed by molly. sirius turned back to his closely watching friends and innocently shrugged.

CHAPTER 3
"Lily why did you agree to go out with me?" asked the confused but happy James as the group walked down Hogsmead.
"Because I like the fact that you have grown up, you aren't that stupid immature kid that used to pull my hair anymore, you are a sweet, sometimes kind, young man." Lily answered as the rest of the group snickered behind her, "Are yuo saying, I'm lying? If Severous doesn'y count who has James bothered? No one! And Sirius, you've grown up too, so stop snickering." Sirius immediately stopped laughing as Lily finished before she quickened her pace and storming off, closely followed by James who hit SIrius in the head as he passed him.
"Come on Lily, don't be mad, oh great your'e crying, come on, why are you so worked upi? Come here." James tried to comfort her, but as he moved Lily's head towards him he realized she was laughing.
"That was funny, and it got us alone." Lily giggled.
"It was kind of funny, anmd another thing. Why do we need to be alone?" James asked eagrly ,
"Hw else can we have a real conversation?" lily anonced dashing James's hope for a kiss "Plus they will think more happened and that is going to be hilarious" Lily finished.
"I don't know about that, if I go back not smiling they will really think that you have been crying and then who will be laughing? not you," James joked.
"Well then put on a smile and lets talk," Lily began buybefore she could say anything else james interupted her.
"Lily have you ever liked me?" James asked eagerly.
"Well just like you i have liked you since first year but i wasn't about to date you before you grew up and matured a little" Lily shared as a smile spread across james's face.
"Well if you like me, why can't I kiss you right here, right now?" James questioned moving closer and taking Lily's head on his right hand and playing with her hair with the other hand.
"That maybe ok," whispered Lily as if his carmel brown eyes had her ina trance. James moved forward towards her untillthier lips touched and time stopped. Eerything around them melted away and all that was left was them. When James finnaly pulled away, Lily reached for his head and pulled it back to her up to him. The connection was pure bliss. They stepped apart realizing where they were, an ally between The Three Broomsticks and the wandshop, they rushed out hand in hand and rejioned the reast of the group in the three broomsticks.
"So what werre you two doing?" mocked Alice, who was sitting next to her boyfriend Frank Longbottom. Peter had a large frown on his face, Molly was still sitting next to him but on her other side attached to her hand was Arthur Weasley.
"Nothing I assure you, so what is new with you Arthur?" Lily changed the subject.
"We're getting married" beamed Arthur as Molly showed Lily her ring.
"It is about time, I mean you guys graduated four years ago, I still don't see why you stayed," congradulated James as he scooted over to sit in between Lily and Sirius.
"Well I stayed because Dumbledore told me i could stay my parents dead and all-" started molly before being interuppted Arthur "and I stayed because she stay"
"Well that was sweet;" stated Alice who stood up," escuse me I need to go to the rest room; Lily will you go with me;"Alice finished all to obvious to the reason.
"No you can go alone, you'll be fine and I don't need to go anyways but if you need someone to go with I'm sure Jenn wouldn't mind," Lily threw back, stunning Alice, who stalked off, quickly followed by Jenn, Molly and Ana. That left Lily alone with all six boys.
"So Lily what really happened in that alley?" teased Sirius who then recieve a slap on the shoulder from Lily.
"Nothing really, we talked a little," Lilly shrugged off.
"And judgeing by James's smile kissed alot," add Remus who wasn't joking.
Lily stole a sideways glance at James before before answering "Maybe a little, no more than twice," James's smile widened as she spoke as if reliving the kiss over and over again.
"I want to go Frank, and so does Molly and Jennifer"Alice snapped as the gils returned to the table.
"Ana, do you want to go also?" Remus asked kindly.
"No, I wouldn't mind staying a little longer with James, Lily, and of course, you." Ana added softly as she sat back down.
"Okay, lets go. Peter, why don't you come with us?" Sirius ordered as he stood and took Jennifer's hand.
"We'll see you when we get back, so save a seat for dinner." James shared as he said good bye.
"Three saets or four?" Sirius asked inquiringly eyening Lily. James placed his arm around Lily's shoulders, who surprisingly didn't shrug it off.
"Yes four seats." Lily answered for James. Lily leaned back against James ending Sirius' joking and demolishing his smile. The group walked out without another word. Lily sat up from James and burst into laughter joined by the others.
"I haven't seen his face so surprised, or even that defeated ever" joked Remus also putting his arm around his date, Ana. The conversation continued, all four continued to laugh and enjoy eachther until it was time to return to Hogwarts.

Chapter 4


it had only been one hour and yet she began to miss him. why couldn't they have more classes together, WAIT!!!! Lily stopped herself she wasn't suppose to miss him, it had always been the other way around and i was good that way bad this was starting to scare lily.

"Miss evans, you aren't at the top of you game today" noticed slughorn as he walked by her table and peered into her bubbling cauldron.

"sorry professor, i was just thinking," Lily apologized as she turned back to her potion. The door creaked open but lily was still distracted by her now reaking cauldron.

"what can i do for you potter?" slughorn asked. Lily's head jerked in the direction of the door where James was now standing.

"dumbeldore need to see lily for a moment" james answered but his eyes didn't leave lily's. lily quickly gathered her books and zapped her cauldron clean. She then rushed out of the room before slughorn could say anything about anything like homework.

"so what does dumbeldore want me for?"inquired lily as she walked to his office. James snickered as he replied.

"not much except that i was to tell you that we need to keep order tonight after the feast." james bursted out as he tryed to keep from laughing to hard. Lily hit him on the shoulder, but she smiled and changed direction to go to the head's room. Lily whispered the password and stepped inside their room. she went and layed on her stomach and pulled her book out of her bag.

"ah, you are going to study,"whined james as he sat down at the foot of her bed.

"what am i suppose to do, james. sit and do nothing?" Lily mocked as she shut her book. she layed against her pillow and pulled a reading book off her nightstand and began t read.

"oh, come on, what are you doing now?" james continued to complain. Lily lowered her book and looked over it at him. James smiled weakly as he turned to face her and lean up against her footboard.

"get your shoes off my bed potter, you are going to get dirt everywhere," lily ordered. James quickly moved his feet so that they were dangling over the side of the bed. He then proceeded to take them off. Lily looked back at her book and sighed as she shut it.

"ok, what did you have in mind? Lily gave in. James smiled as she spoke.

"well i was kind of hoping to relive hogsmead and then go to the feast fashionably late" James said very carefully. He started to fidget as he waited for lily to answer.

"hmm, i don't know on one hand i have always wanted to be fashionably late but your choice of pastime i am not sure of but maybe if you keep asking and are persistent, you never know it has worked before" teased lily as james saw the little sliver of hope she gave him but didn't want o have to ask for the rest of the year. he crawled over to her and layed next her, beginning to play with her soft waves of red hair. Lily moved and placed her head on his chest. James had never know this simple bliss tell now and was content.lily could hear james's hear beat and it was comforting. Lily basked in the ability to know that they could be together and james stay calm and let the relationship bloom slowly.

James hadn't realized they had fallen asleep until he woke up to find lily's head still on his chest. He slowly leaned forward and kissed lily on the top of the head as she began to wake up. james saw the smile on her face as she looked up at him and began to sit up. James reached for her arm and pulled her back to him but pulled to hard and found lily was resting nearly on top of him. Everything seemed to click as once again their lips met and nothing seemed to matter. Lily was the first to pull away but only to glance at the clock on the night stand. she immediatly jumped up and hurried to the door.

"the feast starts in five minutes james we have to go, NOW!!" lily freaked out pulling a nicer shirt out of the closet. she would have usually gone into the bathroom to change but there was no time so she just tore off her first shirt and threw on the other. she then proceeded to grab james's hand and pull him out of the room and into the great hall.

JAMES'S POV

James's eyes shot open as he was woken up by a sound near his bed. He then felt the comforter move as he reached for the light. Lily was standing next to his bed when the light flicked on. Her eyes were swollen and red as if she had been crying and by the time James's eyes had ajusted to the light he noticed she was shivering, too.

"What happened Lily?" James asked, moving the comforter just enough for Lily to crawl in to the bed with him. Lily didn't answer him she just scooted over to be closer to his body and placed his arm around her waist. James gave her a reassuring squeeze still wondering what happened. They layed there for what seemed like hours for James before he could hear Lily's breathing even out and he felt it was safe for him to fall asleep himself.

LILY'S POV

'Run, and don't stop Lily. Just run' that is all Lily could hear when suddenly she awoke with a start, it had only been a nightmare, a terrible, terrible nightmare. She had been running away from someone who she couldn't even see and was told to run by some one she couldn't see also. She couldn't stop shivering and she had begun to cry. Lily hear James roll over in his bed no longer wanted to sleep alone tonight. She rose from her bed, wiped her eyes and tip toed over to James's bed. Lily began to lift the covers when the light flipped on. James lifted the covers for her as he questioned her.

"What happened Lily?" he whispered as she scooted over into the bed. Lily moved in close to his body desperately in need of warmth. She then processeded to lift his arm and place it around her waist to destroy her fears. He gently hugged her tightly slightly moving her closer to him in the process and for the first time since she went to bed Lily felt safe. She knew it was the fact that James was holding her in his arms and she soon fell asleep.

THE NEXT MORNING

Lily woke up the next morning and found herself in James's bed and him laying right next to her his arm still around her waist. She couldn't help but smile at this as she slowly lifted his arm and moved behind her and crawled out of the bed.

"Five more minutes" mumbled James as he rolled over and faced the wall. Lily chuckled at this and headed to the bathroom to take a shower. She returned fifteen minutes later to find James still asleep and smiled as she changed into cloths.

"James it is time to get up" Lily whispered into his ear when she was done changing and putting makeup on. James quickly reached up and grabbed her arm and pulled her back into the bed with him.

"I though you were asleep James" LIly giggled as he pulled her on top of him.

"Simply pretending" James smirked back as he pulled her towards him and kissed her. Lily returned the kiss willingly . They remained this way until someone knocked at the door. Lily jumped at the soft sound and rushed to answer it. The door swung open to reveil the rest of the rest of the Marauders.

"Umm.. i was just wondering if James wanted to come eaat breakfast with us but I am pretty sure he would rather stay here and snog you, Evans," Sirius joked as he wiped some lipstick off of James's face who had unknown to Lily was now standing behind her. Lily blushed and smiled.

"What time IS it?" questioned James as he pulled a deep maroon sweater on. Lily ducked under Jame's arm as she went to gather her books.

"Oh.. about eight thiry, and it is saturday Evans no classes." Lupin added to his response.

"I know but i need to go to potions and talk to slughorn about class on monday to see what we are doing becasue i don't plan on being in class then," Lily annonced as she rushed out of the room and headed down th long corridor.

"So our little Prongs has finally gotten the lovely Lily?" Sirius mocked as he turned and headed to the great hall. James just shook his head in disbelief and followed him.

CHAPTER 6

*James Pov*
James was walking up and down the corridor once again trying to find Lily who had not gone to Slughorn's class. James had finally given up after the second hour of looking and returned to the head room. There he remained waiting solemnly, staring at the door and know that it would not open tonight. When finally went to bed he still wondered what lily had been running from and what she now believed she had to do.

*Lily POV*
Lily was sitting on a very comfortable velvet couch think back on her dream. She now remembered the actual event, the death of her parents. It had been a muggle. Her parents had begged her and petunia to run and petunia had plead with Lily to save them all. Lily couldn't she didn't know how and yet petunia still blamed her for it. Petunia hates all witches, wizards, and magical creatures because of it. Lily never told anyone, she didn't want pity, she needed understanding and yet she still wanted to tell James.

THE NEXT MORNING

*James POV*
James looked up as the door to the head room open and Lily climb in.

"you waited for me?" Lily said slightly annoyed when it was actually quite sweet.

"I wanted to make sure you were ok, after yesterday morning when you rushed away with that fake excuse and didn't come back until... until well now. i was worried," James sincerely said as he stood and began to walk towards her. Lily thrust her hand in front of her signally for him to stop.

"I don't think I can do this, but i know i can't go back so please can we please just be friends" Lily annoced. James was thrown back by this and felt as if he was being shot through the heat. He didn't even bother to go to his bed but sat down right there in the middle of the floor. Lily then conjured a wall to divide the room in half, giving james the last look at the love of his life.

James didn't know what had happened they had been just fine yesterday. He hadn't even said something stupid. He only wanted was lily to be happy and if that meant leaving her alone he would do that. He had never thought she ever meant it when she said to leave her alone until now but he understood and he accepted it.

i am so sorry for the wait but i have been so brain dead lately and i can only give you half of a chapter right now but i promise a long long long post soon but here you are
CHAPTER 7

Lily didn't know why she had done it but she was so afraid to admit that she loved James Potter. still it was no excuse for what she had said to him, it was mean and a lie. James ignored every attempt Lily made for the next week and a half for forgivness but James had just walked away.Lily didn't know what to do she had tired everything. she had even gone to sirius for help but like she thought he wasn't serious and couldn't help. she refused to admit that the only way she was going to get James back was to tell him the truth. So she went through and stood in his doorway.

"James I don't know what you want me to say, all i can say is that when i am with you my heart soars and i feel like i can fly, like i can touch the air and fireworks would go off. i know that my days light up when i am with you and when you leave my heart breaks amd my nights are filled with dreams of you and you chase my nightmares away. i don't know what you see but i don't see you or me i only see us and i don't know about the future but all we can worry about is the here and now and life as we live it or else we are just waiting to die. I don't want to worry anymore, i did that for six and a half years and all i want now is to be able to live my life and love my life and hopefully live it with you and us lovig each other becasue i love you and i am done waiting to die and i am readdy to do this. this relationship with all my heart ans oul with no worries, fears or regretts, because James Potter i am all in" Lily explained, hoping the truth would give her the ability to be loved once agin by the man that rude scrawny first year had become.

Lily opened her mouth to say more she found her self engulfed in James's arms. Lily looked deep into his carmel brown eyes that seemed to be swimming in passion she had never noticed before. She didn't want to wait another second for him to make the next move. She leaned in and put more passion into that single kiss she planted on James's lip than she knew she had. James then returned the kiss with love she had only dreamed off. Lily hadn't relised she was walking forward until James abruptly stopped his back against the wall. they did move from that position his lips on her.

James POV

James had avoided Lily for almost two weeks; avoided the pain of not having her love him back. Yet here she stood in his doorway telling him she wanted to be with him forever.
She stopped talking for only a second but that was all the time James needed to take her in his arms. He could hear her heart pounding as she leaned in and kissed him. She seemed to pour more emotion into that kiss, more than just her love all her pain and all her worries every peice of her that she had hid for so long from him.This was the first move she had ever made and James liked that. Lily moved closer to him and James began walking backwards until he ran into the wall and had to stop. the remained there for only moments before lily pushed him down on the bed. James began to play with Lily's beautiful auburn hair twirling it around his little finger.

James rolled over forcing lily under him. Through all of this they had yet to stop kissing. They continued to snog for over a hour, when once again soneone knocked on the door. Lily pushed James off of her and headed to the door. On the way she signalled James to wash off the lipstick not willing to make the same mistake twice. It wasn't until Lily reached for the door knob that she relised that the wall had disapeared as if was made by her hidden feelings for James. Lily opened the door slowly as James came up behind her. They were both shocked to learn that is was......

(who can it be? i did this because i love to torture every last one of my readers HAHAHA.
lol just kidding)

They were both shocked to find Dumbledore standing in front of the door.

"What is it proffessor?" James quickley asked opening the door all the way and taking Lily's hand. The proffessor seeemed out of breath as if he had run all the way to they room.

"Shall we step inside?" dumbledore answered after a quick glance down the corridors which to both Lilly and James seemed empty. They both moved to the side to let the proffesor in and James followed him inside as Lilly shut the door.

"James it seem that Remus has losed control of himself and i do beleive that your friends are in great need of you assistance." Dumbledore alluded as he gestured to the open window revealing the full moon.

"We have to go" Lily nearly yelled at James at the same moment James was telling her that he had to go.

"Lily you can't go it is too dangerous, you might get hurt," James pleaded pulling on his shoes. Lily stood shoes on and jacket in hand.

"This wouldn't be the first time that i have helped you boys deal with Remus and it sounds like you could use all the help you can get"

"WHAT!" James yelled stopping dead in his tracks.

"This isn't the first time I have helped,” repeated Lily. As she began to walk down the corridor, James ran to catch up but was lost in his own thoughts already. If she knew about Remus then she must know about Sirius and me. Then I won't have to tell her. But that still means she wants to help and this time she doesn't want to wait outside!!! But if she has helped before who is to say that she can't help this time? How did she help last time anyway? Why don't I just ask her instead of just wondering?'

"Lily you said you have helped before. How did you do that?" James finally broke the silence that only Lily had noticed.

"I guard you guys and make sure that no one is in the corridors when you guys are on your way out or in and I draw people away from the whomping willow when you guys have it stilled and that is mostly it" Lily answered truthfully as she reached to open the door to the outside. They were silent when the door swung open and they could hear the piercing howl of a werewolf. Lily broke into a run and James turned into a stag and began to gallop ahead hoping to lose lily. Lily knew she would never be able to keep up running like this.

James was in his stag form and was almost to the willow feeling pretty proud of himself because when he had looked back. Not only had he left lily in the dust but also she must have gone back inside because she was no longer behind him. At that exact moment he felt two clawed feet land on his back stopping him in his tracks. The bird flew off his back and landed on the ground. It was a beautiful red-shouldered hawk. The hawk quickly turned back into Lily. James then turned back into James because of the shock.

"Why didn't you tell me?" asked a very hurt James.

"The same reason you didn't tell me." Lily shot back. She had begun to work her way passed the frozen branches of the whomping willow. James soon followed still shocked.

"It was different with me" he tried to reason.

"Not really. It was exactly the same and now we both know and it doesn't matter that neither of us told the other." Lily finished. She took one big breath and turned back into the bird and flew down the hole as James did the same.

They were both shocked to see what had become of the inside of the shrieking shack. There was nothing intact and there was blood all over the walls, floor and ceiling. They both turned as they heard a whimpering behind them. It was Sirius and he was not in good shape. His was bleeding from a multitude of places and one cut on his shoulder was so deep you could she the bone underneath. James scanned the room to find Remus as Lily landed next to Sirius nudging him into the nearest corner where he collapsed. James finally spotted Remus digging at the wall, probably going after peter. The werewolf stopped and charged at James who moved out of the way, sending Remus into the far wall. He was about to attack again when he saw lily fly by and immediately began to chase her. He did so until he got a paw on her and she fell to the ground. James had seen that coming and already had begun his charge that resulted in the large whole in the wall.

"It is almost morning. We have to go" Yelled peter from above the shack. Lily flew over to Sirius who was now unconscious. James simply picked him up and carried him out on James's antlers as lily followed.

James, Lily and Peter changed back into themselves and looked down at the

uncounsious dog. They had no clue what to do with Sirius. None of them had been unconsious and still in their animal forms.

"We could force change him," suggested Peter, as he poked Sirius in the side.

"That won't work, it would probally cause more damage and it might even be

easier to treat him as a dog," Lily shot down. James lifted sirius up from the ground and began to carry the large dog into the building.

"WAIT!" yelled Lily as she ran to catch up. James stopped in his tracks and

turn just in time to see Lily throw the invisiblity cloak over James and sirius. James brought him all the way to his and Lily's room and laid him down on the couch. Lily went and got her wand and pulled a large book from under her bed, How to Heal Animal Ailments Magical and Not. She spent the rest of the night putting sirius back together again piece by bloody piece.

ok so i had lost like all my momentum 4 this story and i really hope to get that back and you all probally hate me for this (that the post was shorst and that is took me forever) but i and i am going to try and do better

Chapter 8 (or atleast i think)

The couple was silent as Lily healed Sirius. They had brought him to the head's room and told him not to change back. Lily had never healed an animal other than a few scatches here and there as a child. She hoped that everything she was doing was going to be enough.

"That is all i can do, i hope it is enough" Lilly sighed as she closed her book. James came closer and began to pet Sirius as if he really was a dog. the sleeping drought that Lily had given Sirius was starting to wear off as he began to whimper mournfully. Lily gathered the large dog in her arms, attempting to sooth him while rocking him back and forth.

"How much pain do you think he is in, Lil?" James whispered. he was now sitting beside her on the couch gently stroking sirius' back. He was worried about his friend and also about how Remus would feel after he knew that he had done.

"I don't know, but i do know that it is easier to deal with in this form than in human. I broke my wing a couple of years back and let it heal in human form and it took forever so when i broke it again last summer i just let it heal in my animgus form and it only took two days. you are going to need to get his school work for the next couple days with the excuse that he is sick in bed but not sick enough to go to the hospital wing. i'll do his work and you will turn it back in for him. he will be out for atleast a week," Lilly finished as she stopped rocking. Sirius had drifted back to sleep or maybe unconciousness but he was no longer whimpering.

James put his arm around Lily's shoulder allowing her to relax onto his chest. She wasn't sure if James had said anything but she drifted to sleep when he told her to. James was listening to the deep even breaths that belonged to Lily and the ragged pain filled ones of Sirius as his eyes finally shut for the evening.

Lilly awoke four hours later to the whimpering of a dog. She tried to reach for the pain removal draught she had made earlier that morning but was unable to move with Sirius' large form still gathered in her lap. She nudged James gently and pointed to the vial. He didn't make a sound as he stood and retrieved it. Lilly tipped Sirius' head back and uncoked the vial. She poured its contents down his throat. The whimpering died away as the couple worked to remove Lily from underneath the large black dog.

They got ready quietly and shared a quick kiss before James headed to his first class and Lily prepared to miss her first class, ever.

James could barely sit through class nor could he concentrate. His body was in the room but his mind was back with Lily and Sirius. They had agreed that Sirius couldn't be left alone but they had fought over who would stay.

"Mr. Potter do you find something boring about turning your enemies into toads?" Professor McGonagall snipped. she had stopped lecturing and everyone was staring at him.

"No professor, I am just alittle preoccupied today. Sorry," He mumbled back. he shifted in his seat again unable to find a comfortable postions with all they eyes on him.

"You might as well go check on Mr. Black and Ms. Evans that is ovbiously where you mind is. Just mind someone to take notes for all of you," McGonagall dismissed with a wave of her hand. James gathered his things as quickley as possible and jogged out the room towards his room.

James heard Lily shriek with suprise when he came bursting into the room. She hit him playfully in the shoulder before filling him in on Sirius' condition. Sirius wasn't doing worse but he wasn't doing better either. She had to restitch his stomach gash and give him another blood replinishing potion. Sirius' animagus was whimpering even though he was in a deep, unconcious sleep.

"He seems in pain," James announced the ovbious. He was petting long streaks up and down Sirius' unmarked back.

"Thank you for the ephiphany genius, I couldn't figure out what he was thinking or feeling," Lily joked giving James a shove before continuing. "I can't figure out why he isn't getting better. All his bones have mended and besides his scars and stitches he should be fine and he should be ok to change back tomorrow but i don't even know if he will be ok to change in a week at this rate," Lilly finished. You could hear the frustration in her voice and almost feel the fatigue that was edged into it. James didn't know what he could do so he just pulled her into a hug and held her close.

"I think I have figured it out!" exclaimed Lily as she came bursting into the head room after a long visit to the library. She had a book in her hand and a page marked. James grabbed the book from her hand and read the title,Werewolfs: Bites, Scratches, and Myths. Lily snatched the book back and flipped to the marked page.

"Listen to this. 'On the rare occurance that someone is attacked by a werewolf in his or her animigus form the healing process is slow, painful and sometimes fatal. Once attacked by a werewolf one should not be allowed to change back from their animigus until they are healed and the werewolf venom is eliminated from the victim's blood. When the attack leaves only a few scatches but no bites wait atleast twelve hours if the damage is minimum or longer depending on the degree of damage. If the victim has indeed been bitten you must wait atleast forty-eight hours before changing back even if the bite is the only dammge. In some cases the victim has substanded irreversible damage and even if they heal in their animigus it has been found that they are incapable of regaining their human form. With werewolf attacks survival and quality of life are determined only with time.' We will just have to wait atleast another day but i think with time Sirius will be just fine. I mean he has to be the only thing left to heal are his bites," Lily layed the book done on the table next to the couch. You could almost see the optimism drain from her body as she looked down at Sirius's whimpering form. Lily look up at James with pleading eyes, hoping he would tell her things were better than they looked. He only pulled her into his arms as she began to cry.

James led her to her bed and sat down, drawing her into his lap. They sat there in the comfort of each other's presence until Lily stopped crying and James had whipped away the final tear. They layed back and promptly fell asleep in mere moments, exhustion and fear finally winning over.

James woke with a start. Something was banging and James wasn't awake enough to discover what.

"James open up! James! They say that Lily and Sirius are both sick. Let me in. please," yelled Remus as James began to register what was going on. HE carefully moved Lily off his chest and got up. He paused to pet Sirius before opening the door. The door swung open and Remus bursted in. He scanned the room slowly slopping only a few moments on Lily before zeroing in on Sirius and not looking away.

"What did I do?" Remus whispered so softly James barely heard him.

"You were out of control. I had to stay behind, remember? Well Dumbledore came to get me and Lily and I came running, but it was to late for Sirius he was like that when we found him. We got him out and healed most of his wounds but you bit him Remus, more than once and badly. we have done all we can andonly time will tell if he comes out of it or not," James tried and tell it just as he remembered it, hoping that the truth would atleast make it atleast a little easier to swallow. James could tell by the look on Remus's face that nothing would make this any easier. Remus slowly inched closer to Sirius and layed a hand on the dog's sleeping head. He knelt next to the couch and began to mumble incoherantly.

"How long as he been here?" Lily asked quietly from behind James. James turn to meet her gaze but long to hold her in his arms the second he did so. Lily stood and wrapped her arms around James's waist from behind. She laid her head against his back, as they watched Remus in silence.

Weeks past and nothing changed. Lily forged a note that said Sirius was being called home but besides that everything was just like the first days after the accident. Remus walked around in a depressed and depressing fog that few could even momentarily penitrate and people began to avoid him. Lily and James were never far apart and Peter stayed away from them all. Sirius seemed no better physically but his whimpering had decreased and Lily refused to see it as anything other than a good, no great sign. Many thought it strange that most the time you couldn't find the couple apart but when James had the urge to fly or to play quidditch, Lily would be no where near but seemed to be replaced by a red- shouldered hawk.

It had been two months and things had changed. The living and walking had not but the dying and suffering had. Sirius's bites had finally began to heal and his whimpering had all but stopped. Sirius's condition went uphill while the rest of the groups relationships to each other went downhill, excluding Lily and James who seemed to cleave to each other constantly. It seemed to take forever but Sirius had begun to walk and alough some of his mannerisms were the same as before, he seemed changed. his body had gone from a large furry dog to a slick, smaller type and they all hoped it wouldn't become permanant.

"He's never coming back, is he? he is going to be a dog forever," Lily whispered to James in bed one night. Graduation was rushing towards them faster than they ever thought was possible, and no one knew that the future held. Remus and James had mended their fences and were once again inseprable friends. sirius was as healthy as any dog could claim to be but still canine.

"Even if he does, we don't know if he will ever be the same again. Lil i don't know which would be better for him. I don't want him to wake up and find out that he isn't the person that I grew up with or the person that is my best friend, I know it is selfish but to me it feels like I can't lose him if he stays this way forever," James confessed. He pulled Lily tighter into his chest and placed a kiss on the top of her head before letting go.

"I want him to be human again even if he isn't the same, I mean nothing can take all of what made Sirius himself away right?" she questioned. She wanted everything to be the way it had been almost a full semester ago, where she had stupid boys teasing her and James chasing after her and she thought nothing bad would happen to any of them.

James leaped from the bed as they heard Sirius bark from his spot in front of the fireplace. James and Sirius reached the door at the same time. James eased the door open to find Dumbledore once again at the door. Lily called Sirius into the bathroom as James invited Dumbledore in.

"It would seem that Sirius has pulled pout of this semester to go home and come back next year and yet he is not home," Dumbledore shared with a twinkle in his eye.

"I don't know where he is and I didn't even know he was leaving to go home until the day he left and then he hasn't even written," James lied as everyone sat down before the fireplace.

"Ah, but I think you do. that is why I have come to you two. James not only were you two best friends but Miss Evans is smart enough to pull something like this off. Please don't waste your time telling lies and just come clean so that i can help on anyway possible," Dumbledore reasoned. Lily and James glanced at each other before Lily stood and opened the bathroom door letting Sirius out.

"Ah, Mr. Black. I see that they have taken care of you well," the headmaster chuckled as he petted the black dog. Sirius began to purr, if dogs can puff that is, from the attention, finally laying down at the headmaster's feet.

"What now?" questioned Lily who was sitting once again.

"He seems to be doing well and I doubt he could of gotten better care any where else. I just needed to see it for my own eyes to make sure. Sirius, should he recover in time, will in fact graduate with you all. He was doing well enough and the assignments that 'he' has done so far leave him in a good position to graduate, but if he should not recover in time then he will not be allowed to attend the ceremony. Take good care of him," Dumbledore replyed as he showed himself to the door. The couple sat in silence for a few long moments before Lily slid to the ground to pet Sirius.

"What now? Lily repeated to James.

"I don't know. I guess we just hope he gets well and if he doesn't, well if he doesn't get well then i guess we are a pet dog for the rest of our lives," James answered with a sigh before
he continued, "What else can we do?"
