I heard a rumor that Christian Coulson, the guy who played Tom Riddle in Chamber of Secrets, might be in Half-Blood Prince. Has anyone else heard that? Would he be in the Pensieve scenes?

See for yourself @ imdb.com.
El Barto
That would be my guess too, the pensieve scenes. Where else would he be? biggrin.gif I'm not entirely sure he would be in every scene, though. I can imagine as he gets older in the movie that they place Ralph Fiennes himself and show him sort of eventually becoming what we saw in Goblet of Fire. Know what I mean?

Such as Coulson playing the one at the orphanage, and a few other scenes, and then Fiennes for the Hepzibah Smith scene (with Gambon explaining that he had gotten older and changed somewhat).
the silos chronicles
Even i saw Christian's name on imbd. He is rumoured , but i think i read somewhere that he is interested in coming back.
Miss Minerva Mcgonagall
Yeah he probably will be back. But I can't wait to see how they are going to pull off this one in the pensieve scenes. When Dumbledore goes to visit Tom in the orphanage he's only how old Harry was, 11 (I think) Can Christian really manage to play this? Don't think so. Then in the scenes with Hepzibah he's probably the perfect age for them.
The Fiennes idea is good, but I think Fiennes is too old for these scenes.
Thornberrycake
Iīd definitely *lurve* to have Christian Coulson as Tom Riddle again. But in spite of my private obsession, I canīt really see him portraying an elven year old boy.

Itīs gonna be quite hard though to find the proper kid to do the job. In my opinion, Fiennes is too much of a hysteric Voldmort huh.gif whereas Coulson was pouring more "pure balanced evil" into the character. I think a young actor of eleven would need that smartish, evilish quality.
I didnīt watch the fourth film in English, yet, so maybe Fiennesī portrayal was somewhat altered via dubbing.

What was I gonna say? Oh, yes: Please bring back Coulson for as many scenes as possible. He is doing an awesome job! wub.gif
xox-lilrach-xox
It would be great to have him back! Not only is he another good looking male to goggle at blink.gif it would be stange having another guy play Tom Riddle!

In an interview last year he said he'd love to do another HP film!
dan
Christian Coulson would be a good choice to play Tom Riddle again, however i saw Hannibal Rising at the weekend and the actor who plays Hannibal would make an excellent Tom Riddle. I'm not sure of his name and i would guess he's about early twenties.
El Barto
If I'm not mistaken, the actor who played Hannibal is actually French. We know Tom Riddle wasn't French biggrin.gif

I still say keep Fiennes and Coulson, only to show one younger, one older (Fiennes) and his continued change into Lord Voldemort just like they did with Gollum in Lord of the Rings with Andy Serkis (sp?).
dan
However, actors tend to be could at changing their voice and dialect, it is what they get paid for afterall. Speaking of Lord of the rings, is Vitto Morgenson from an English speaking country? He pulled off the accent perfectly whilst playing the King! Although Christian Coulson has apparently already been signed, he will struggle to do the scene at the orphanage when Riddle is eleven.

Well said. Coulson has done a marvelous job performing the character of young Tom Riddle and we can actually see his nature and how he became Voldemort. I would enjoy seeing Coulson up on screen again and I hope that they decide to keep him for the role.
iheartron
I liked Fiennes. He's a keeper. But Coulson didn't really seem like a Voldemort to me. When you look at him...then to Fiennes...theres no physical relationship when it comes to characteristics of the two. Coulson looks too...goody two shoes...rich boy who is bad on the side...i don't know. It's difficult to explain.

But if Coulson were too appear as young voldy...i would have to objections. I like seeing the same actors playing parts threw series. That's why I say it's rubbish that the trio is too old. WHO CARES. we're used to them already
dan
Iheartron in the books it has been said by Dumbledore that the reborn Voldemort has no physical characteristics to Voldemort before he began splitting his soul. So Christian Coulson and Ralph Fiennes both playing Voldemort would not matter in that respect
Seriouslysirius
Yeah i think i heard that on IMBD as well. It said rumoured the last time i checked so i think it's a maybe.
I'd like to see him come back he is good at playing Riddle he did really well in COS.
So i hope he comes back.
Lil Cougar
Yeah I hope he does come back for pensieve scenes... It would be to confusing if they changed people...
I can't wait for the movie!

Yeah so it doesn't really matter who plays young voldermort... as long as its the same guy who played him last time in CoS... tongue.gif
iheartron
it response to that...yes, i do recall reading that.

I didn't expect them to be exactly the same. I should have elaborated on what I ment. I mean, you can't change 100% but you do change an awful lot.. But it seems to me very unlikely that he'd end up that diffrent. I guess I can't explain what I mean...it's difficult. So we'll just leave it at that.

I have heard these rumors and yes I think they are true bcuz he would has to be in the pensieve scenes bcuz thats the main part of this book/movie. To exclude him would throw the whole movie off basis.
HermionesTwin
The actor who played Tom Riddle in The Chamber of Secrets would be great for the Hebzibah memory, but they should bring in a younger one for the Wardrobe-on-fire scene. For the I-want-to-teach-DADA scene they might need an older Riddle though...unless they can make him look older.
xox-lilrach-xox
Yea, they should deffinately have him for the Hebzibah memory and a younger guy for the other memories. I think for the I want to be DADA they should just put prostetics (SP?) on his face because doesn't DD say that he's starting to look less human when he applies?
HermionesTwin
He is supposed to look more Voldemort-Like (or at least less human) in the job interview thingy, if you can call it that. They should use similar stuff that they used for Lord Voldemort in Goblet of Fire for him to make him look less human.
r0n8urg4ndy
I do not know if he will return as Tom Riddle, but I think he was the perfect one. If they choose someone else, then it might not be as good. Tom was not in a lot of the second movie, not more than ten minutes. But in Half-Blood Prince, when they change it a little, it seems like he would be in 5+ scenes, a lot of time. So if they don't get the original, they will have to get someone really good.
Dugiefrsh08
well i would hope soo.... i hope they keep the cast the same as much as possible..... of course our dd dieing didnt help anything but u kant do anything about tht.
zernerman
how much of the movie do you think there going to take out? huh.gif

When i first read the Hepzibah scene with Tom Riddle aka Voldemort, i immediately pictured this image in my had, of Christian Coulson standing on a cold step in the rain, with the hood of his cloack up and his snakelike eyes protruding from his hood. This to me was my favourite scene because even in the book it seemed dramatic the way he entered the scene. In a away his character reminds me of Anakin Skywalker in the third Star Wars, when he turns to the dark side and you see him marching across a dark hall with his hood up, and his yellow/red eyes protruding from them. This i think would work pretty well in the Hepzibah scene because it is the part where he is beginning to transform into what he finally becomes, The creature of Voldemort, and he is changing into something which would take away his identity forever.

A thought i just had whilst writing this: i think that the reason why Dumbledore still always calls Voldemort 'Tom Riddle' is because he is trying to seek his redemption to how he was before, and i think that Voldemort's evil didn't just come to him just like that, but there is a whole different story behind his transformation into Voldemort - and i believe that Dumbledore is trying to make Voldemort see that he is still the man he was once before but his determination and frustration to be better than everyone else has got the better of him.
Felipe_Black
I think that it would be great if Christian Coulson returned as Riddle for the later memories, he is almost 30 after all (DOB 3 October 1978). but the producer David Heyman has already said that some of the memory scenes will be cut!!! mad.gif

see Vertitaserum page for details:

http://www.veritaserum.com/article.php?a=s...0&aid=20126

I am already annoyed!!

So they may just use Rlaph Fiennes (though to date he has not confirmed yet). Also they have held open casting for a young Voldermort, so he may be an unknown.

I assume they will want to play up the similarities between Harry and Tom Riddle, and pick a boy who looks like Harry.
rebel_megz
Sorry to burst your bubble guys, but he won't be returning. He was PERFECT for young Voldemort. In a topic here on Veritaserum (on the homepage where they talk about the HP news) they said that they were holding an audition for young Tom Riddle. There was an age limit, like 11-15 or something, and he's to old, sorry!!!
Marichris
Director David Yates twisted.gif has said that he will not recast Christian Coulson as Tom Riddle in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, simply because of his age (28)mad.gif

An online petition has been set up at:-

So please sign so that there will be continuity in the films. People power will prevail, so please help! magic.gif
paulmcq1888
He is like twenty-seven now! There is no chaance of him being in the HBP movie, except he could possibly be in the scene were he wants to teach dada.
trtrzgunners
He can do Voldermort at the time of Borgin and Burkes and the DADA scene.

But i heard he was already rejected or something, but i'm not really sure.
Marichris
They shouldn't lac.gif replace Christian Coulson because he was brilliant as Tom Riddle. I was so excited biggrin.gif when I read about Tom Riddle in the HBP, because I imagined Christian playing him. David Yates just can't replace him because of his age. I mean he doesn't look 28. All they have to do is give him a bit of makeup and a wig and then he'll look the same again.

Our only hope is that people power will prevail and that David Yates comes to his senses. grouphug.gif

Not too long ago i read somewhere on veritaserum that some little kid was cast for the 6th movie but they didn't tell him who he was cast as, and they arn't releasing it. I thought, at the time, he might have been cast as little voldy. It woudln't make sense for Christian Coulson to play an 11 year old, but i hope they keep him for some of the older memories, for consistency's sake...
keith
I actually kind of agree with that decision.I dont think a 28 year old could accurately portray a teenaged Lord Voldemort. It's a little easier with the main three actors because they're only o few years older than the characters, but Christian Coulson is at least a decade older than the character he'd play!
Disneymagic
Christian Coulson shouldn't be replaced. He has already proven himself to be a very talented actor in the Chamber of Secrets. As a Harry Potter fan, I believe that he shouldn't be replaced not only for continuity issues but because he did such a brilliant job as Tom Riddle. Age is just a number and doesn't determine your acting ability or phyiscal appearance. If we are going by the facts, then why don't we just replace everyone because they're older then they are supposed to be. Anyway, Christian Coulson wouldn't have aged that much (If All) in 5 years, so just let him continue the role which he helped make so famous.
Disneymagic
I would totally love to see Christian Coulson come back for HBP. He wouldn't look too much older than he did in the Chamber of Secrets, so they should definately come back for Horcrux scenes and DADA teacher. Of course they can't make him look 11 so they should hire a kid to do the scenes at the orphanage. There should be some way to help save Christian, so I'm going to sign that petition, because hopefully it will help in some way.
No.1_HarryPotterFan
So they're not going to have the original Tom play... Tom? pinch.gif That doesn't seem very smart to me. I mean, he was a very good actor, he made it very believable. I think that is quite stupid, to use someone else. mad.gif
Packers
i would love to see the guy who originally played tom riddle in CoS come back, and i don;t care if he looks older, but the director felt that the guy, Christian Coulson was to okld
HP#1_wee_lil'
Oh, I hope the old Tom Riddle comes back. I thought he made a very good young Voldemort in the Chamber of Secrets and I can imagine him doing the bit when he acts all charming and worms the information about the Horcruxes out of Slughorn in the pensieve. He says he would like to be in the films again, so from the makers point of view there would be no point in going through all the rigmarole of casting someone new when not only actor wants to return, but the viewers also want to see him back. I'd like to see Christian Coulson come back as Tom but if it's the directors choice... unsure.gif
smartman299
It has already been confirmed that Christian Colusian (sorry if the spelling is bad) is not doing it. Yates announced, and they held auditions to recast the role... I thought Colusion was ok but it's not bothering me that he's being recast
Disneymagic
To me, it doesn't really matter if David Yates announced that they held auditions to recast the role. What if David Yates can't find anyone good to play the role? Is he just gonna get some mediocre actor just because they are younger? David Yates still has the opportunity to go back on his word - sure a couple of young teenagers might feel a little bit annoyed that they couldn't audition, but there are lots of fans of Christian Coulson out there who would feel so hurt if David Yates allows this to happen.

I guess I'm not terribly upset if he's recast. I mean, I loved Coulson in CoS, but since he didn't have a huge role (where we could see him, obviously Voldy did), then changing actors isn't going to bother me. I would like it if he came back, just for the consistency. But they'll have to have to actors, won't they? Once for young Riddle and one for teen Riddle? I hope they get really good people! I'm excited!
mayfair
David Yates remarked somewhere, that he did not foresee Christian Coulson (the actor who played Tom Riddle in Chamber of Secrets) returning as Tom Riddle in Half Blood Prince movie. The reason he cited was that Coulson was nearing 29 and it would be difficult to have him play a 16 year old. Though, understandable, I don't find it very convincing. Makeup can cover up much these days and we actually have an instance of actor Shirley Henderson who herself is nearing 40 play the role of Moaning Myrtle in not one but two movies. Agreed that she plays a ghost, but the point is that age can be masked. We do not have only a 16 year Riddle in the movie, there's Riddle after Hogwarts, when he worked in Borgin and Burkes and the Riddle who came back to Hogwarts, seeking a job and to hide his horcrux. Coulson could easily play those alongwith the 16-17 year old who killed his family and framed Morfin and the one who spoke to Slughorn about Horcruxes. As it is they would need another to play the child Riddle in case they decide to retain that in the movie. Also Coulson could have played Tom Riddle senior, a good appreciation for his performance in the second movie. But then directors and producers do seem to have different priorities and we have seen much that makes little sense. I wonder if they have chosen anyone to play Riddle after all.
lemon_tree_girl
I agree with you myfair. With make up, nowadays there are a lot of programs to cover the ages. Just look what they have done with voldemorts nose, i mean they can even make a whole new character no matter how that person looks. I like Christian Coulson, he has that scary voldemort look so I think he is perfect. Its a big mistake they are finding another actor. When its not such a problem, well Daniel is getting older so in the 7th movie he cant playe 17-18 year old. So why dont they find a new Harry ? Because we are used to see Daniel. Thats also hapenning with Christian. When I imagine Riddle, I imagine Christian, so I think they are wrong. But thats only my opinion.
IamNotaDeathEater
If have they cut Christian Coulsen out I won't be happy! Lol! I think he's one of those people who look younger than they are anyway. How old would he have been in CoS anyway, and he still passed that off! He's the perfect Riddle.
The only thing is, they're probably gonna change the whole structure of these 'lessons' to fit in with the movie so the chances are half of the scenes in the book will be cut. Which means that it is possible to do the whole thing with out that aged Riddle in it. However, the Hepzibah scene, I think is vital because that's where he finds the locket and the cup.
keel
They said Christian Coulson was too old to come back so they're going to find a new riddell. They were looking for someone to play that sort of age (15-18) at the open auditions, weren't they?
They'll probably use someone from there.
i think they'll have to keep that scene in also.
LadyLuna
I would love Christian Coulson to come back as Tom Riddle! Unfortunately Yates is an idiot and thinks he's too old to play the part. HELLO!? He still has his boyishly handsome looks and he may be 28 but he still can pull off teenaged Voldy. I always imagined him to seem older than his classmates anyway. Here's the most recent pic I found of him so far. He has the red eyes to complete the look too! lolol

Recent Christian Coulson pic

As far as looking like Ralph Fiennes, I can see just a little bit similarity but I'm sure the transformation was a bit more drastic as he got older and killed more people anyway! I made a banner for you Voldy lovers out there lol

Voldemort Tribute Banner

Of course, I have to share the manips I did to support Christian. Check them out!

What are horcruxes?
Working at Borgin and Burke

I also put up manips to support Joely Richardson as Narcissa Malfoy in one of the topics on this board.
Marichris
They have to bring Christian Coulson back as Tom Riddle! He perfected the role and it's not fair to bring in someone new just because they might be a little bit younger. Just think: it's the opposite for what orginally happened in the Lord of the Rings. Peter Jackson originally hired Stuart Townsend as Aragorn, but he seemed too young for the role, so they hired Viggo Mortensen who was perfect. There is nothing wrong with hiring actors who are older. David Yates just needs a little more faith in Christian Coulson.

Please David Yates, even if you don't bring back Christian as the 16 year old Tom Riddle, then bring him back for when he is working at Borgin and Burkes or applying for the DADA position. cool.gif

he absolutly should not be replaced,, he is the face of tom riddle , u cant change that, itd just screw everything up
lancelot243
I actually don't disagree with this decision. Don't get me wrong, I think he did a great job as Tom Riddle. However, 28 is a little old to be portraying a teenager, and Tom Riddle has not had a big part leading up to the sixth movie/book, so I don't think the change in actor's will be that big of a deal either.
loveSeverus
I was always against replacing the actors,it can spoil the whole thing. They should do some make-up and photoshop(at least thet is possible today),but leave the actor.
Or if nothing, find someone who looks like him so much, that is creapy.....
JBock
haha nice point by loveseverus..find someone that looks so much like him that its creapy..nice one

yeah i think that that is how it should be...or like i said before...just keep the actor
monkeymushroom
HI, i recently saw a picture of young eleven year old Tom Riddle and he doesn't look intimidating. All the cast were saying that they were scared of the actor but in the picture he looks all innocent. But, i suppose he does look a bit intimidating.
