Chapter 37
Regulus Black stood in a circle. He wore a black cloak and a skeletal mask identical to those around him. The dark lord stood in the centre, a cruel smile playing on his lips. Regulus feared him, he was powerful, and a far greater wizard than he would ever be.
Regulus’ hair bristled as the dark lord turned to him, his red eyes searching. He tried to block his mind, but he knew it was a futile attempt.
“You failed me.” His master hissed. Regulus thought back,
He grabbed the girl whose hair fell over her face. Her pale skin and delicate features were beautiful. No wonder his brother loved her.
“Don’t do anything or she gets it.” He said, trying to conceal his voice. His brother. Sirius, looked scared. He angrily glared at Regulus, who was hidden behind a mask, Regulus knew Sirius could beat him with one wave of his wand, he hoped the threat of his girlfriend may stop him.
He clung to the girl tightly, he didn’t want to hurt her, but the Dark Lord’s wrath was something to fear.
Suddenly James sprung from behind a bush, wand out. Regulus jumped and released his grip on the girl. She turned and hexed him, her blonde hair flying, before running into a hiding place.
Regulus lay on the cold floor and allowed blackness to take him. He had failed.“Lord, I never meant –“ He stuttered.
“Black, I thought you were stronger than this, and yet your brother’s best friend scared you.”
“But Lord I – I –“
“Silence. Crucio.” His master spat. Regulus feel to the floor, tears in his eyes.
*
Lucius Malfoy stood in the circle of people, he fingered his mask nervously. He watched as his friend fell to the floor screaming. He knew it was him next.
“You too,” The Dark Lord whispered as he turned around, “ - failed me. Lucius Malfoy you are pathetic.”
“Don’t you dare hurt the dark lord!” Lucius screamed, leaping forwards, as he did this his mask fell and his face was uncovered.
“Lucius!” Sirius cried, sending a spell at him. Lucius fell to the floor, paralysed. He had failed his master. “Crucio.” The Dark Lord whispered. Lucius fell to the floor in agony.
“No! Master!” He cried out, hoping that he would be released from the pain.
“I have an idea,” Voldemort said, a smirk playing on his face, “ Something you can do for me.”
“Anything master. Anything.” Lucius whispered.
“Get revenge.”
And so he had been assigned that simple task, and he knew exactly what to do.
*
It was the day before Lily and James had to return to Hogwarts. After the previous incident Lily had not returned to her grandmother’s house. She sat quietly on her bed, fingering the music box that James had retrieved from the house. She lifted up the lid and listened to the music.
“Hushabye mountain…gently blow o’er hushabye bay…” Lily sang, hands shaking. She feared that she may never return to her grandmother’s house.
“You ready?” James asked, walking in.
“Yeah.” Lily smiled weakly. She stood up and dropped the box on her bed. James took her hand and they strolled out together, ready to meet Lily’s friends for the last time.
The music box lay open on the bed, the twinkling tune stopped playing and silence fell. Had Lily looked closer she would have seen, carved into her family heirloom, the crest of Gryffindor. The Gryffindor Lion.
Lily and James walked towards the café. Carla, Clarice and Anna were already there, grinning as they entered.
“We ordered for you.” Clarice said cheekily, pointing at a single, huge milkshake with tow straws in. Her green eyes twinkled.
“Clarice, what do you want to tell us?” Lily asked, sensing her friend’s excitement.
“She’s got a new boyfriend.” Carla blurted out, her eyes wide after she realised what she said.
“Carla!” Clarice cried, “It’s a secret.”
“Oh yeah.” Carla’s dark cheeks turned a light pink. Clarice rolled her eyes, she flicked her hair and said,
“His name’s Lucius and he’s really sweet.” James and Lily shivered at the name,
“Do you know him?” She asked,
“No, probably someone else.” Lily said, half frowning.
“Well he’s great, with lovely blonde hair and fair skin. We have to meet him soon actually.”
“What?” James asked.
“She wants us all to come along.” Anna commented, raising her eyebrows. Strawberry blonde hair fell into her face from her messy ponytail. “We have to meet him.”
“Ok, ok.” Lily smiled, seeing the look on Clarice’s face.
“We have to go now actually.” Clarice giggled, pulling everyone up.
“But we haven’t had our milkshake yet.” Lily complained, trying to take a mouthful. But Clarice persisted and slowly they followed her out the café.
“We’re seeing him at the cinema.” Clarice informed everyone, “C’mon!”
She, Anna and Carla sped up ahead and started crossing the road. What happened next was a blur.
As if in slow motion a car rounded the corner, it seemed to have lost control. Lily saw the man through the windscreen; he had completely let go of the wheel and was covering his face with his hands.
“NO-!” Lily cried, leaping forward. James caught her mid-jump and pulled her back.
The car sped towards her three friends who were in the middle of the road. James whipped out his wand and tried to redirect the car, but something else was controlling it. Dark magic.
Lily watched as it screeched on it’s brakes, but to no avail. Carla, Anna and Clarice stopped and turned in the road. All of their eyes widened and they stood paralysed as the car drove into them.
They crashed into the car and rolled under it, all three of them unconscious.
The moment was over in less than thirty seconds, but to Lily it seemed an eternity.
“NO!” She screamed and ran into the road. The car had disappeared round the bend and people began rushing over.
She knelt beside them. Clarice looked the least damages, but was still bleeding lots. Carla’s chest was bleeding heavily, her breathing raspy. Anna’s arm was sliced, and her chest, too, was bleeding.
“No.” Lily murmured. She was about to draw out her wand but saw muggles all around, crowding them. She didn’t care.
“Call an ambulance!” She cried, and all the muggles sped off to find phones. Lily and James were left alone. Both pulled out their wands and began waving and muttering spells.
Carla opened her eyes, but they were cold and empty, They rolled back and she stopped breathing.
“Carla, please no.” Lily begged, waving her wand furiously. Anna coughed, and blood splattered out her mouth.
“No, Anna, come back, please.” Lily stuttered, as Anna, too, stopped breathing. Tears streamed down Lily’s face as her third and final friend, Clarice, opened her eyes and said,
“Goodbye.”
“Don’t do this, don’t give up.” Lily cried, as James continued muttering all the spells he could think of. Clarice smiled weakly and her chest stopped moving, her breathing halted.
“NO!” Lily screamed, trying to grab her friends. James wrapped his arms around her and held her back. “NO!” she sobbed shaking and cursing.
James looked to the end of the road, he saw a man, with long blonde hair, slip a wand in his robes, and disappear into thin air.
James held Lily tighter but glanced up as an owl flew down to them. He ripped open the letter, and the scrawling, green ink read:
Just a little revenge. Sweet I think is the term. Sweet revenge.
Chapter 38
Lily’s friends were long since dead by the time the ambulances arrived. The paramedics covered them in a white cloth and gave Lily something for shock.
As they made their slow way home Lily howled with tears, even James felt wet, warm tears on his cheeks.
They got home and Lily ran straight upstairs, leaving James to try and explain to Mr and Mrs Evans what had happened. Mark and Camilla seemed very distressed. Turns out all of the girls where family friends too, and they had thought of them as daughters. Camilla went for a very long walk, and Mark started making phone calls. Dinner that night was a very subdued affair.
It was late in the evening before James dared go upstairs, even he felt a great sense of loss, what Lily must have felt must have been terrible. He quietly pushed the door open,
“Lily?” he whispered. She sniffed. He saw a bulge from under her covers. “I think you should see this.”
Lily sat up confused, James saw tearstains down her cheeks, and her eyes were read and puffy. He handed her the letter and then walked to the window.
Lily looked curiously down at the crumpled parchment in her hand. She unfolded it gently and began to read. James watched, almost scared, as her cheeks turned an angry red colour.
“Lily?” he asked tentatively.
“He killed them. He murdered my friends.” She spoke quietly but her voice was full of rage. “I hate him.” She muttered. “I HATE HIM!” She bellowed. The mirror exploded and glass flew everywhere. The window cracked and fell into the street below. Feathers flew out of Lily’s pillows, James’ bed upturned and the lights short-circuited. She hadn’t even touched her wand.
“Lumos.” James muttered. Lily looked at the bright light, James stood by an empty hole in the wall and she realised that she had just destroyed her bedroom.
“You’re a sorceress.” James said, astounded. “You don’t need your wand.”
“Yes.” Lily muttered. She closed her eyes and suddenly the room righted itself. James eye’s widened as he let the light from his wand fade.
“How long have you known?” he asked,
“Only since last year. It’s easier with a wand though.” Lily replied. Tears began to scorch her cheeks again. She shut her eyes and covered her face with her hands. She felt James’ arm slip around her and his lips kiss her cheek.
“I’m sorry.” He said simply. Lily nodded and remained in his arms until they fell asleep.
The next morning Lily woke with a start. She couldn’t remember why she had been crying and then it hit her.
Carla, Clarice, Anna. Dead. “Mum?“ She cried immediately. James stirred next to her as she ran downstairs. Her mum lay wide-awake on the sofa in the lounge.
“Oh Lily.” Her mum sobbed. Lily ran to her and hugged her. Both girls burst into tears and began weeping.
*
Lily’s dad sat in his bedroom. He was propped up against the bedpost. His heart was weeping as if it had been his own daughter, but not emotion left his eyes. He was too full of thoughts to cry.
Earlier he had strayed into his daughter’s bedroom. Both Lily and James were asleep, but that’s not what had interested him. He bent over and picked up a small music box from the floor. He had seen it before. It was his mother in law’s - Lily’s gran’s.
Lily’s grandmother had been pushed out by Lily’s mother. When Camilla had found out that her mum was a witch she flipped out. She refused to let the old woman see her grandchildren, even on her deathbed.
She had told Mark, in a letter, all about her family. The truth. He had sworn not to tell anyone but Lily. Not to tell anyone about her bloodline.
Somehow Lily had been back to Godric’s hollow,
has she found out about her bloodline though? He considered. He didn’t know whether to tell her or not. He decided that she’d be safer not knowing. He decided no to tell her.
*
Lily and James sat on the Hogwarts express. Lily had her head pressed against the glass, and James sat silently with a book. Neither spoke.
“Hey,” Sirius said, he still bore bruises from the attack, and he seemed a lot grimmer than normal. “Did you guys hear? More deaths occurred, it was reported in the daily prophet. Three muggle girls were killed.”
Lily looked up and then began to sob uncontrollably. James hugged her tight. At first Sirius looked confused then suddenly he realised.
“Oh my gosh, where they your friends?” Lily sobs became louder and Sirius took that to mean yes. He too, put his arms around Lily. All three of them sat hugging each other sorrowfully. Sirius had only met the girls for a few minutes in passing, but he knew how much Lily cared for them.
Luckily Lily had managed to sort herself out by the time everyone else arrived. They didn’t mention what had happened to them. Their friends didn’t need to know about Voldemort or his “revenge”.
The train trip was more subdued than usual, mainly because Lily and James sat in stony silence. At about three in the afternoon James stood up and walked out,
“I’m just going for a walk.” Everyone shrugged and let him go.
James walked down the corridor slowly; he ached all over and just wanted to go to bed. He felt terribly sad and just wanted to sit alone. But with 7 friends that would never happen.
Suddenly, out of nowhere a girl walked over to him. He recognised her as Bellatrix Black, Sirius’ cousin. She was vaguely good looking but had a cruel personality and her eyes could stop a lion dead in it’s tracks.
“Hey James.” She smiled. He nodded curtly and tried to walk past. “So James…” She said twiddling her hair, blocking his way.
“What?” he asked coldly. She fluttered her eyelashes and came towards him. James pushed her back but she came again and this time something happened to James.
A nagging voice in the back of his head whispered to him: Kiss her
No. James’ voice replied
Do it. The first voice said. James knew someone was using the imperius curse on him, but he couldn’t block it. He felt himself kissing Bellatrix passionately. He did his best to pull away but each time he did the spell hit him harder and he jerked back towards her lips.
Lily wandered out the compartment, her hands running along the wall. She was half in dream world, half in reality. Carla, Clarice and Anna’s voices kept running through her mind.
Lily and a small child with braids splashed in a paddling pool.
Four little girls played in the park.
Lily sat on a swing with her friend, dark hair swinging.
A quiet child with strawberry blonde hair leapt around by the radio.
Three girls hugging the redhead, wishing her goodbye and good luck at boarding school.
Clarice punched a boy; Lily smiled with thanks in the background.
Lily sending all the girls Christmas presents.
The girls sitting in a café with her and James.
The girls running across the road.
The car swerving towards them.
The moment where Lily was paralysed to the spot.
The moment when each of the girls died.
Their last moments together. Lily looked up suddenly, her heart stopped. She saw pressed tight up against a wall, James and Bellatrix snogging furiously.
“JAMES!” She cried. His eyes were staring at her, but he didn’t remove his lips from Bellatrix’s. Lily turned and fled down the corridor. What she didn’t see was Snape in the next compartment, pointing his wand at James.
James felt the spell lift off him, he pushed Bellatrix away and spat on the ground. He saw Snape sneering from a nearby compartment. Snape still had the remains of pink in his hair, but he looked almost back to normal. James pointed his wand at him and said,
“Silencio.” Snape gasped and pointed at his throat. James had temporarily muted him.
James ran down the corridor. “LILY?!” He cried. “LILY!” But she was nowhere to be seen.
Lily entered the baggage cart and locked the door behind her. She slumped down next to a large tank that was full of water and wept silently. Behind her small sea creatures swam, stroking the glass, trying to soothe her.
Lily smiled weakly at the sea nymphs, they were closely related to Nereids, and so were always kind and helpful, even if a glass tank wall was between them.
Lily made a shrieky noise and they shrieked back. Luckily they spoke merman.
“Talk to him.” They urged.
“But just because I didn’t kiss him for like one day, he starts snogging some other girl. I thought he changed.” Lily cried.
“Maybe he did.” One said thoughtfully.
Lily had spoken merman since first year. She had met a mermaid who had come to the surface of the lake for a swim. She quickly became friends with her, and began to pick up the language.
Her mermaid friend had been the one who initially told Lily to give James a chance.
Great help now. Lily thought bitterly. Never before had her mermaid friend been wrong, first time for everything I suppose.
*
Phoebe sat in shock.
“You’re a -?”
“Werewolf.” Remus confirmed. “Yes.” He looked tense and scared. “I told you because I didn’t want to keep this secret from you any longer. I hope you can forgive me.”
Phoebe opened her mouth, then shut it again. She tugged at one of her blonde curls then said,
“Lily knows doesn’t she? That’s why she was all scratched up when she and James first got together.”
Remus thought back, it seemed so long ago; he dared to think of how simple it seemed back then. If only half a year ago.
“Yes.” He said solemnly. Phoebe sat in silence for a moment then, she continued pulling on her lock of hair.
“I love you.” She said simply. Remus’ jaw dropped,
“Really?” he asked, voice shaking. Phoebe nodded. A huge smile broke across Moony’s face and he hugged her tight.
“I love you too.” He said happily. Phoebe grinned and kissed him passionately. She didn’t care that he was a werewolf, all she wanted was him, forever.
*
The train drew to a halt and all the students clambered out. James searched desperately but Lily was nowhere to be seen. He rushed to the great hall; he hoped she would be there for dinner.
Lily climbed out the back of the train. She turned and ran towards the lake, rather than the hall.
“Pasithea!” She called in mermish.
“Are you there?” She heard splashing ahead and saw a fin flick out the water.
“Lily?” The voice asked cautiously. Lily ran forwards and lit her wand. The light cast upon her beautiful mermaid friend.
“Hello Pasithea, I need help.” “What is it?” Asked the mermaid, pulling her long hair out her face.
“Oh.” Lily burst into tears and fell to her knees.
“It’s not fair.” She sobbed.
“Everything’s gone wrong.” The mermaid swam as far to the edge as she could and beckoned Lily forwards. Lily hoisted up her robes and walk into the lake. She was knee deep in freezing cold water but was too upset to care. Her friend pulled her into a tight hug and began to comfort her.
James sat at the dinner table, he picked at his food. All he could think of was Lily, she still hadn’t turned up, and James was getting really worried.
“Prongs, she’ll turn up.” Sirius smiled. “And it’s that git Snivellus’ fault. I’ll go punch him if that helps.”
James grunted and Sirius walked off.
“Sirius!” Remus called after him, frowning. He returned thirty seconds later and grinned.
“That felt good.” He said flexing his hands. Snape stalked past, blood pouring from his nose. James snorted and smiled weakly.
“Thanks mate.”
“Black, detention.” Mc Gonagall snapped as she stalked up to them.
“Sure thing Prof!” Sirius grinned cheekily.
“Two weeks.”
“Damn.” Sirius said.
James wandered outside. He was heading towards the forest, his friend lived there. He transformed into a stag and whinnied into the empty night. A response came and from the darkness ran out another huge stag.
“I need help,” James explained. “
It’s my girlfriend. Well hopefully she’s still my girlfriend. She’s missing.” “What does she look like?” the stag bleated back.
“Beautiful, with long, red hair and green eyes."
“She’s down at the lake.” “Thanks.” James cantered off into he darkness.
He reached the lake and saw her sitting in the shallows with a mermaid. Lily caught sight of him and stood up instantly. She obviously recognised him. He ran towards her but she picked up her stuff and began to run away.
James transformed back into a human and chased after her.
“Lily, listen to me!” James called, Lily continued running. “LILY!”
“What James?!” Lily wheeled around. “You need to explain that just because I’m having a few troubles suddenly I’m not good enough. I don’t kiss you for one day and you run off with some Slytherin! “
“But Lily-“ James stuttered, her red hair was flying everywhere in the wind, it seemed like the elements felt her anger. The trees shook and leaves feel everywhere. He looked around, they’d run into the forest.
“Humans.” A noise clacked. Both he and Lily span around, a spider of huge proportions stood behind them. More and more spiders appeared, they crawled closer and closer.
“LILY RUN!” James bellowed, she didn’t need telling twice. They turned on their heels and sprinted.
The acromatula chased after them.
“Food.” They clacked, their pincers whacking together. Suddenly Lily screamed, a spider leapt out in front of her. James caught up with her. They had cornered them.
“What do we do?” Lily asked frightened.
“Fight.” James said simply, he whipped out his wand and pointed it at them. James began firing hexes at the spiders but there were too many for him to deal with. A spider leapt forward and James dropped his wand. It disappeared in the darkness.
“Lily.” He whispered.
“I don’t have my wand.” She cried.
“You don’t need it!” James said. Lily shut her eyes and summoned up all her energy.
Reducto. She thought, a blinding light flashed, sending James reeling. The spiders were thrown backwards and many sliced open. James and Lily were splattered with black blood.
“Urgghhh.” James said, Lily kept her eyes closed. “Lils?”
Lily opened her eyes and collapsed on the floor. She was shaking from the effort of it. James found his wand and then scooped her up and charged out the forest.
He laid her on the grass as soon as he was well clear of the forbidden forest.
“Lily?” he asked, checking she was breathing.
“That hurt.” She coughed. James smiled with relief,
“I knew you could do it.”
”You’re not off the hook you know.” Lily said, “But I’ll let you explain.”
James grinned gratefully.
“It was Snape,” he began.
“You kissed Snape?!” Lily cried.
“NO! Eww gross!” James exclaimed.
“Phew.” Lily laughed. She loved James’ company, even if he had just kissed another girl.
“As I was saying, Snape put me under an imperius curse.” James explained, “He wanted to cause havoc between us so he made me kiss Bella.” Lily looked confused for a moment before shouting something very rude to do with Snape. James hugged her and she kissed him passionately.
“Thank goodness.” She whispered. “ I thought I’d lost you.”
“I’d never leave you, no matter what.” James replied romantically, Lily kissed him again and took his hand.
“Come.” Lily said and led James to a beautiful spot in the grounds, he’s never been there before, which was odd. A small stream trickled down the side of a hill and two willow trees overhung it. They sat beneath the trees together all night.
