This has bugged me since the first mention in SS. Does anyone know why the movies refer to the Dark Forest instead of the Forbidden Forest? Was there another Forbidden Forest that was just so famous that they had to change the name so we wouldn't get confused? I'm really stumped by this one, as I think the Forbidden Forest is just such an appropriate name. JKR doesn't use words lightly, we know, so if anyone has any inside information, I'd love to know!

Unless I'm much mistaken, I believe they use both terms? If not, I doubt it is something that should be taken seriously. The exact reason I can only imagine...assuming that they only use "Dark Forest".

As obsessive as i am, I know in the movie Harry Potter world, they call the Forbidden Forest the "Dark Forest". Has no one else noticed this? Have I actually come up with an original and yet overlooked item? How can that be? I'm just shopping at Diagon Alley!

i agree its stupid that they call it something different, the foridden forest is so much of a better name. though i do suppose it keeps the books separate from the books which is a good thing

I'm so disappointed! I thought for sure that someone would have the answer to this. I'm starting to think that it's something to do with Warner Brothers copyrighting a lot of the series-specific words. But they haven't copywrighted "Dark Forest", so why the switch from Forbidden Forest, which I like ever so much more than DF?

I agree, Half Blood, the film makers have changed a lot of things throughtout the films, all of which bug me, but not half as much as the name of the Forbidden Forest. Although the appearance of Professor Flitwick makes me crazy as well. I forgive a lot of the changes in the movies because I know they can't put in all the little details I love. I'd sit through a 5 hour HP movie! One of my biggest disappointments was the exclusion of Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday party, and I can see why, as the special effects would have been astronomical. But change the Forbidden Forest? I liken that to changing the name of Hogwarts itself.
Guess I'll just have to take a deep breath and let it go. I thought there may have been a logical reason why it was changed, but I guess not.

I actually didn't notice. I thoguht they used both terms in both the movies and the books. Hmmm... Maybe WB just changed it becasue they thought it might sound better?

Hmmm... I noticed i just i quess i don't think thats really good to do. Like was said before Forbidden Forest sounds way better. Thesse littles slip ups in the film can be really annoying but it's not major so it's not to bad. I suppose they both really mean the same thing. Dark and forbidden in a way.

I wonder if the term "Forbidden Forest" is trademarked or something in another movie or show with the WB. Maybe they didn't want to have to deal with any legal issues so they went for the next best thing, perhaps. I actually didn't notice that, I'll watch the movies again and look out for it.

I always thought that they used both Forbidden and Dark forest... I know DD says Dark forest when he says its out of bouns, but I think Draco calls it the forbidden forest when they have to do their detention.
Thats another thing that they got wrong, It was supposed to be Neville, not Ron who got the detention with them. But that's for another thread.
I supposed the film makers just though Dark Forest sounded more menacing or something??

I noticed that too! But I think that it's not a big deal if JKR didn't say anything. But, I thought I did hear them use both the Forbidden Forest, and the Dark Forest in the movies!

I was watching the special features DVD of PoA last night, and it shows a map that JKR did of Hogwarts and on her map its referred to as 'Dark Forest' as well. So I'm guessing that in the actual HP world of JKR's mind it's both too.
