Full Version: Jk Is "almost Finished" A Non-potter Book

Killian
Watching the J.K Rowling interview on Richard and Judy, I noticed she said that she was putting the final touches to her next book after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, an as-yet-unnamed fictional "fairy-tale" book for children.

What do you think this book could be about, and will you be buying it? I don't know if I like the term "fairy tale", or the term "childrens book" for that matter, but when I think about it, wasn't Harry Potter also labelled a "fairy tale, children's book"?

She said it's not as big as Harry Potter, but interesting nonetheless. Apologies if this has been passed on before!
poisonedXhoney
Along the way, Harry Potter became more than a childrens book, because the people who were younger when it came out are older now. I'm 20 and I plan of attending the release party in July in full costume. biggrin.gif

Anyway, back on topic...

I'll probably skim through it when it comes out, then if I like it in any way, I might buy it. It's not definite though.
Moon(I luv you Luna)
That's true ... just because it's been considered a children's fairy-tail doesn't mean it'll turn out a chirldren's fairy-tal! Look at HP! Anywho ...

I dunno, i think i'll buy it. This is a book coming from the wonderful JKR, so i think anything's possible. Besides-it sounds somewhat interesting. I always wondered what she'd write after HP. happy.gif
K_the death eater
I dunno about that. I mean Harry Potter was considered a fairy-tale children's book like you guys already said. But I might just look at it or even skim through it, and if I like it or think that it's interesting, I might as well just buy it. Or I might just buy it because I want to so I can read it when I go out of town or something if it's long enough to keep my occupied.

I would definitely read it, out of loyalty to J.K because I'm really not sure how that book is going to turn out. blink.gif

I would buy it for sure anyways
wonwon*&*hermy
thinking about it i will probably read it too but i hope we find out what it will be called soon only because it is going to be different to have a non HP book writing my Jk.Rowling... happy.gif
ILoveHarryPotter07
I will probably read it along with many other hp fans. Regardless that its not HP its by JK Rowling and I bet it will be good..maybe not as good or as popular but I still will read it. Even if it is a childrens book.

Harry Potter is a childrens book. Well the first three definately were for children but the last three are for a more mature age. E.G secondary school students like myself. I am 16 and I love the books, they are aimed at teenagers I think but adults enjoy them aswell. My mum loves Harry Potter. I dont think i will read this new book. Nothing JK rowling can wrtie compares to Harry Potter. Although I would be tempted to read it if others my age said it was good.
snapeslittlewitchie

I think I might buy it when it comes out mainly because it's Rowling who wrote it. But i dont' expect that it will be as good as Harry POtter. The next book is probably something she just thought of unlike HP which just crept into her mind somehow.

But, who knows. Is there a book that can match Harry POtter? I doubt it.

But like I said, I think I'm buying it anyway. biggrin.gif

Let's all support Severus Snape!!! biggrin.gif

Fairy tales are nowadays seen as stories for children because they contain a message about how one should behave. But that was not their original purpose.

The original ending of Snow White had the stepmother dance on hot coals until her heart gave in. Hardly suitable for children one would have thought, but because it is a fairy tale, its considered to be suitable for children. My mother once told me that she went to see it as a youngster and was traumatised by it.

Watership Down is a UK rating U (suitable for everyone) because its about nice fluffy rabbits.

Yes, nice fluffy rabbits that get brutally murdered and get into absolutely bloody fights which looking back on it 15 years after I first watched it, is a load of nonsense because rabbits are veggies. I am not actually sure what Richard Adams is doing here unless it is a ecological warning. My brother saw it once and again was absolutely traumatised by it. I think a pattern is emerging here... I wouldn't let my kids (if i had any) to read the book until they were much much older.

One version of Cinderella has the ugly sisters cutting off their toes to fit into the glass slipper. But nowadays would be considered a story of how to attract a man and reinforce the notion of the stay at home mother.

Terry Pratchett writes Fairy tales for adults. In Lords and Ladies he writes

QUOTE

Elves are wonderful, they provoke wonder
Elves are marvellous, they cause marvels
Elves are fantastic, they create fantasies
Elves are glamorous, they project glamour
Elves are enchanting, they weave enchantment
Elves are terrific, they begat terror

(p.169 Lords and Ladies by Terry Pratchett published by Corgi 1993)

Hes demonstating the difference between words used about a thing and what a thing actually does. This goes back to the way that stories are passed on by word of mouth, that they change, become sanitised for younger audiences. A bit like Terminator being an 18 in UK film rating when i was a young one and is now rated 15. Not sure what the equivalents are in the US.

The development of HP as a modern day fairy tale (which I doubt it really is, more of a literary version of Star Wars laugh.gif ) , is quite interesting. You can see how the people who were 11 years old or so when PS was released literally grew up with HP.

As a result, JK would probably want to go back to her roots really so good luck to her.

Be interesting to see whether she will maintain the types of sales that made her richer then the queen.
megan_de_lioncourt
Hmm, i dont mind if its for children, ill still read it all the same.. Because harry potter is still considered as a childrens series, so i think it may not be totally for children, if you know what i mean. Anyway, id say harry potter is more adult now.

witherwings09
I will probably read it if I have the time. I would think that if it is even half as good as Harry Potter turned out, it should do pretty well.

Lots of people will probably read it just because Rowling wrote it, which is probably why I'll read it too. I'd want to see how she writes something besides Harry Potter.
etphonehome
Millions of us are fans of HP, and one of the main the reasons is because of the way JKR wrote the character and the stories. So I guess that I could say I'm a fan of her writing as well as her characters. Her style of writing may well change . It may become more attractive to a younger audience, but what I'd like to see is something for adults. A grown up fairy tale if you like.

It's strange that you say this Blackfan, because I work in a primary school with 7/8 year olds. Recently they studied classic fairytale stories and were asked to rewrite them with a modern twist. Pretty much all of them named Harry Potter as a modern day fairy tale. And when asked what stories would they expect to be reading to their own grandchildren, most agreed the HP would be amongst the classics like Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.

Personally, I think that no matter what she writes, she will have an avid audience for it.
megan_de_lioncourt
I dont think id class HP as a fairytale..Although it has got the elements.Id definetly read it to my children though

No.1_HarryPotterFan
It sort of is a fairy tale, but in novel form. I mean, it's got all the elements of a fairy tale... but anyway, I'd read another book by Rowling. I mean, any of her work will probably be good. I'd read it.
Dumbledore's Widow
I have been wondering whether or not there are two versions of Harry Potter? One version written specifically for younger kids, and another version for adults? Unless there are two versions, I just don't see HP as being considered a children's book, or should it be called a fairy tale.

I'm waiting for the final book in the HP series, because, well, I just have to see how it all ends. But, I do not plan on reading anything else written by JKR.
ohmyHP!
I'll probably buy this new book. Even if it is for younger children, JKR is such an amazing writer it'd be nice to see what she could write other than Harry Potter.
julielynn44
I personally think that there are a lot of "children's books" out there that are better than adult fiction so I will read this book to see what it is like. I am hoping for something as NON Harry Potter as possible to see if JK has the ability to write well about something else. I am not sure that JK is that great of a writer. I do think she is good, but part of the draw of her books is the charachters she created. Can she do the same thing with just one story? I will read and find out.
Seriouslysirius
I'll read any book she brings out. Because even though it's not Harry she can really capture and that's an uncommon skill.
I remember saying she's doing another book for children and one for older readers. Is that right? Well i don't think they can possibly become anymore popular than Harry Potter but none the less. I bet due to her popularity for HOP Books that her new book will get a more than warm reception.
krazy4kreacher
Wow, she's done writing another book? Doesn't anyone find that weird? No one's really said anything about that, but wow, Harry Potter's barely over, and, she's already written another. Must be interesting.

I'll definately read it. Just to see, you know, what it's about and if it's really really good. When I first read HP, I was like 7 or 8, I don't think I saw myself going to midnight releases of the 6th and 7th books. Maybe this new book will do that for other little kids.

I don't know if i'll buy it though, there's always the library. Unless I go to the bookstore, and see it. then i would need to get it to feel satisfied. I think anything that JKRowling writes, I'll read, most like buy too.
Sakuya
I'll probably at least read it, just because it's JKR, and if I like it, I'll obviously buy it.

I didn't know she had been working on another book...
missginnypotter
i have a younger sister so i'll probably read it after her lol.
i think that HP has definately prgressed from being a childrens story into something more mature. it was quite obvious that they would have to mature though because as well as the fans getting older, the character get older and JKR couldn't have written HPDH if it had have been aimed at the same age group as HPPS.
biggrin.gif
voldemort
I'll definitely read this new book no matter what.....JKR is the kind of author that you stick with for life...I mean I've been reading Harry Potter since I learned how to read....I can't imagine life without Harry Potter.... smile.gif
Equusfixer
Has anyone read any more about this new book, like when it is scheduled for release and what it is entitled?

I think I'll personally wait until it comes to the library unless there is some huge hype over it like there was for HPDH.

I assume this new one will be released worldwide as well?
deatheater13
Yeah, I'm definately going to read it. Like everyone has said, I'm going to stick with JKR for life. I sure hope it's released worldwide, because I'm American, so if it isn't I would have to order it online and I'm not so sure my parents woiuld go for that.

I definately want her to write a fantasy, but I would be OK with anything else.
amortentia_149
I don't feel very goof about the term "fairy-tale" either. But knowing J.K. it will probably be a very interesting read. And at some point, it will probably find it's way into my bookshelf happy.gif but i get the feeling it will be a little more of a children's book than Harry Potter. But still, i think it will be good....
nicky potter
i didnt know that she was writing another book? not harry potter i know, but all i did know was that she is doing some encyclopedia? maybe? but huh lol who knew? not i biggrin.gif whats its about ?
sadie_urlady523
Like Nicky Potter, I didn't even know she was writing another book! all I heard about was the encyclopedia thing. I can't wait to see it though! Anyway, what is the other book about? blink.gif

Unless there are two versions, I just don't see HP as being considered a children's book, or should it be called a fairy tale.

Why not? (Concerns the 'children's book' remark, 'cause as for the fairy tale label, it indeed doesn't fit here. Where has anyone seen fairies in HP, and who doesn't know what a 'tale' is?) In my opinion, on the contrary, children are the most able to appreciate all HP novels. Not young children, of course, but 10-15 years old seems ideal. Which doesn't imply that some adults shouldn't like it as well...

I know I enjoy reading children's books tremendously, and fairy tales too. Which is why I'll be pretty curious to take a look at Ms. Rowling's new offspring... I must even admit that the fact it will not be so 'big' as HP might turn into a quality. I often found that HP's weaknesses were due to an unfortunate contrast between what it claimed and tried to be, and what it really was, or at least what I felt it was. Being less ambitious, JKR could actually be really good.
~*~Psycho Seal~*~
I dont see why JKR couldn't have released the Tales of Beedle the Bard so everyone can read them. She could have released them like she did fantastic beasts and where to find them and Quidditch through the ages sad.gif
harryjpotter
I heard that she was writing or rewriting some sort of mythology. An adult book. I find that very interesting because as we all know, Jo has a fantastic imagination and to see how she will write for adults will be a fun new experience for those like me who have reached adulthood with Harry Potter.
acidpop
I remember hearing a while back that JKR was going to write a non-HP book. I'm not really excited about it because it's really just another book. I plan on still reading it though. One of the reasons I love this series is because its so well written, so I'm confident anything else that JKR publishes is going to be just as good. Plus, I'm kind of curious to see what it's like to read a book from her that isn't HP related. It just seems so weird in a way haha.
fcdxsza123
I'd like to see what it's going to be I hope it's really good because after Harry Potter if she doesn't do good she might lose some fans plus I haven't read a good book after the series ended. sleep.gif
MrBubbles
If she has another book in store I might just check it out depending on how well recived it will be.

Itīs always hard to follow up a succes with another one immediatley afterwards so even though itīs Jo Iīm not 100% postive it will be good.

Although I do think itīs good for her to spread her wings a little bit and get out a world sheīs written about for over ten years and do something diffrent.
