Full Version: Book Parties?

im not actually having a party, but its the only title i could think of at the time.

so yeah, picture this, its July 20th, 2007, the final hours before the new book are ticking down slowly, counting closer and closer, until finally, its midnight. you know youll get your copy really soon, and all that separates you and the holy grail of books is a couple minutes/hours or perhaps three more people in line in front of you to get their hands wrapped around the book. where will you be?

I usually head out to St Johns to go to Coles bookstore in the avalon mall for their midnight opening of the book just to be around the 200+ people in line behind and in front of me. this year i might not be though, I have to be abbout 6 hours away from st johns on the 21st by noon, so i havent figured it all out yet. but i was curious as to how people from different places plan to get their copy. whether it be pre-ordering of the internet, waiting up til 12 midnight to buy it with dozens/hundreds more people, or maybe just waiting a couple days and not having to deal with the crowds.

I pre-ordered my copy of Deathly Hallows today at my bookstore and I am going to go with my dad around 10:00 to wait in line. When I finally get my hands on the book I'll probally faint...

Then I'll drive home and read the whole book in 10 hours(depending on the size it will take me longer/shorter).

But a month or two before I'll obviously read all the books twice. And on the 13th I'll watch the movie, too to prepare myself.

My dad thinks I'm crazy for liking Harry Potter so much. biggrin.gif

tongue.gif i'm going to WHSmith at redcar to get my copy at mignight, i went last year for the 6th book and there wasn't realy that many people there!

then in the back of the car for the 30mins journey home i sat adn read the book with the light on tongue.gif

it took me 10hours to read it fully

I expect that I will bop down to Wal-Mart at midnight and pick up a copy. Last time, I went into Wal-Mart the day it was released, and there were plenty of copies left, which kind of surprised me. I may pre-order a book, but at the moment I'm not sure where I'll be living by that time. We presently live in Southern Maine, but I have convinced my wife to relocate down south after the kids get out of school. I've had enough of these darn New England winters for one lifetime!

I doubt that I'll actually have the luxury of reading the book nonstop, since I've got two kids and a third on the way who will not care if Dad has been up until the wee hours of the morning reading the book. I do expect, however, at least to skim the end of the book and see if I should be happy or depressed.

Well i plan on going to see the fifth movie for the second time after opening day around 7. And then im going to drive over to Barns and Noble cuz they always have a big party, and just hang out there and enjoy that this is the last time i will get to wait up til midnight to get a Harry Potter book. sad.gif
Feena91
When they released the Half Blood Prince, Chapters had a party from like 8 o'clock so it was crowded since then & they had a bunch of Harry Potter stuff and even had a rat and snake there..since that was for the 6th book I'm pretty sure they will do something even bigger for the release of the last book
Quidditch 101
I will be pre-ordering the book at my bookstore. I may also talk my mom into letting me do the midnight party.

I am having a HUGE party for the 5th movie, though.
FawkesyGirl
i reserved a copy about a month ago for barnes and noble book store and i'm going to their book party with all my friends. i've never been to one before, and it sounds like fun. since i have a copy reserved, i won't have to wait in line as long.i can't wait!! i'm gonna be up like all night that night reading! i'm just a dork like that.

~FawkesyGirl~

Nooooo! Skimming the end would make me depressed if I hadn't read everything up to that point! tongue.gif What if you happen to read something like 'And suddenly he understood - it had all been a big mistake. Kreacher was the chosen one'? Nah, no self-inflicted spoilers for me, thanks. tongue.gif

As for the party - the book gets released at 01:00, because we're one hour ahead of the UK in their summer. That means I'll probably go stand in the queue by about, hmm, 8-ish. It's too far away to plan that yet. tongue.gif But I have ordered my copy already! They said there's going to be a party, but I get irritated when I'm anxious and excited about things like this. I don't think I'll be in the mood for games and give-aways. Unless they had Alan Rickman there doing Snape impressions, I doubt anything would take my mind of the fact that within hours the series would officially end. I'll just stand hopping around in the queue out of excitement, anticipation, and sadness. I'm definitely not staying for any sort of party afterwards! It'll be straight home to see what happens!

July is too far away!!!
meanmuggin
I've never been to a book release party for Harry Potter and I've read all the books at least 10 times each. It's weird. I always end up reading the new books way after they've come out which ruins some things for me. I'm definitely going to go at midnight to get this book I think because NO ONE is going to ruin this book for me like some have done inadvertantly in the past. Ugh. I've already reserved a copy, though.

I can't believe this is the last time there'll be a Harry Potter book release. I keep hoping it's some kind of a cruel joke and I kinda wish I'd gone to the other ones. :[

I'll probably go to the book release party with a friend and then go home and read until I finish it. Whenever I start one of the new books, there is no stopping in the middle. I read and read until it's done. Everyone knows not to even breathe near me for fear of being murdered. No doubt I'm going to need at LEAST 2 boxes of tissues. It's going to be so bitter sweet.

I want July to come faster and slower at the same time. This is so sad. :[

I'm already preparing, I've got my notebooks, and highlighters and other note-taking utensils. They first time I read it, it will be for my enjoyment. Then I'll re-read it to pick up all those great gossip worthy topics. Hand out congrats for people whose predictions came to pass and have the same happen to me. I've got my whole day planned. I will have meditated and cleared my mind of all chatter and extraneous thought in preparation of reading such a [fill in your word-of-wonder here] book.
Moon(I luv you Luna)
Let's see ... In NZ it comes out at 12 noon, so i won't have to spen all night reaing it. I'll probably go down to the warehouse an hour before, and stand in line and chat with whoever is behind or in front of me about whether Harry's going to die or not.

Last year that's what i did and got a free hat for being one of the first 100 in line! happy.gif

speak for yourself, in Romania (or Retardsville) it's not going to be released that soon. there's always the internet, anyway biggrin.gif .

on the 20th i have my last exam, so reading DH is gonna be a great treat for me.
amortentia_lover
I'm bummed out, i was going to go to the bookstore with my friend at midnight and we were going to have like a tree day sleepover and read the entire book out loud. ( basically because my mum reads it first *sob* so last year we took turns reading ehr copy out loud happy.gif what a great friend )
But this year i'm on holiday in DEvon and get abck THE DAY AFTER it's release. *sob* so no midnight openings or anything... although i'll try and convice my friend in devon to do something Harry Potterish tongue.gif
One good thing, by the time i'm back my mum will have finished reading biggrin.gif

Well, Ive been on the website for the place im getting my book (waterstones) and so far in the events they dont have a launch in my area Birmingham. In england these are the places listed for the launch so far -
WATERSTONE'S ARNDALE CENTRE
WATERSTONE'S HIGH WYCOMBE
WATERSTONE'S WILMSLOW
WATERSTONE'S STIRLING THISTLE
WATERSTONE'S BRAEHEAD
WATERSTONE'S GLASGOW ARGYLE ST
WATERSTONE'S GLASGOW SAUCHIEHA
Lionacleit School Library, Lionacleit, Isle of Benbecula

Basically , these are like midnight parties, anyone in the areas where one is taking place can turn up. In some of the launch parties you do need to go dressed up.

This is a post for people to leave dates for launch parties all over the world, and discuss them

I am so so sssooooo excited about this book, but I will be majorly sad because it's the last one sad.gif . I mean, what will all us major HP fans do when it's all over?
Anyway, I've happily pre-ordered my copy and am counting down the days until the release. It's driving my friends, and family, completely mad! Lol.
So hopefully I'll get it at midnight, that's if I can force my parents to drive me to WHSmith at 10:00 pm and wait until I get it, which hopefully they will.
Then I won't sleep until I've read it all. No way can anyone spoil this for me then. Every other book someone has spoilt the ending and telling me the big moment before I get a chance to read it.
But book parties? I would love to, except I don't know anyone else that is a big enough fan of HP to join me. And I'm not having a party on my own, lol.
But to everyone else who is having one, have fun!
Layla
I am trying my hardest to get to the midnight release...because if I don't know what happens the second I'm able to then it's likely that I might explode. So basically, me and a few friends will go hang out downtown for the day and then go to the bookstore at seven or eight. Then we'll hang out there until the book comes out at midnight. We thought about a sleepover...but if you spend the night at your friend's house then it's most likely you'll talk and get distracted...So we'll go home, read all night, and then call each other the next day and talk/cry about it.
Ha-ha, can't wait!! 98 more days.
potterprincess
i have already pre-ordered my copy of the book ay whsmiths.

i wanted to go and queue up outside and get it at midnight put my mum and dad wont take me sad.gif

megan_de_lioncourt
Now im happy =] I checked in to my local store yesterday to ask if they will be doing anything at all.. and they said they're opening at midnight =] Which is a good thing because i want to be one of the first to get my book .

Anybody elses local book shops doing a launch party?
cjstafford
Noone in TX is doing a launch party. Noone in this hill-billy of a town is. My friend and I are going to the midnight showing of the new movie and we have also preordered our books. I know that a store in the mall is going to be opening up especially for the release of the new book. i am getting there every early since I am off that Saturday. I am going to read the book and then come in here and post my lil heart out b/c I have a feeling it's not going to be a happy ending sad.gif

I feel SO disapointed! At times like these I really wish my entire family were Harry Potter maniacs (like me) because then we would throw a huge party for the release of both the new book AND film!! I really would like to queue up outside of the nearest book store to get the new book but I highly doubt thats' happening, my parents would refuse to spend an entire night waiting outside of WHSmith when they could be inside watching Eastenders. (Really, what is better? Lets' get real parents!)
I'm really disapointed about that, but, oh well! I'll still get the book as soon as I possibly can because my mum does read the books and I'm sure she'll be eager to read it before me ... no chance laugh.gif
I'm happy to say that I'll be seeing the film on its' release day, my mum refuses to have us see it "second hand" as she says. Teehee. hardly second hand, I know, but you don't want those who have seen it on its' release day to tell you all the details (even though I know what the story is, but you know what I mean biggrin.gif )
I'm not liking the idea of Harry Potter 3-D (i know this is off-topic but i must have my opinion, im over opinionated) I think it might have the non 3-D version a bit ... well ... an example would be too much "wands pointing at the screens" scenarios.
Amanda_Malfoy
I actually went into the borders that I pre-ordered my book from and specifically asked them if they were having any kind of party and if people would be dressing up, and they said yeah, so I'm really excited about it. If anyone around here lives anywhere near Newark, Delaware, you should go to the Borders at 101 Geoffrey drive! I'll be there! It'll Be fun! biggrin.gif

Hey!! Well my friend is taking me to the store and then im getting a lift back by her dad. Ill only be 14, so my mom is actually being quite cool about it all. Although my parents wouldnt come with me either lol. What i would suggest is perhaps going with a friend whos parents wouldnt mind picking you up or waiting..then you could tell them your having a sleepover at your mates house or something .. not that id recommend lying *cough cough* I hope i can go to the film on the release date. Ill have to go straight after school or something. Im well happy because my birthday is the 22nd July so i can make it harry potter themed and get away with it lol

how do you find launch parties?
etphonehome
I live in a little hick market town in Gloucestershire. We have a small family run childrens bookshop and they always have a midnight launch. So if you live in the Stroud area get yourself there. Dress up is optional but I think it's all part of the magic if you do!
megan_de_lioncourt
The best way to find out if theyre is going to be a launch party is -
1. If it is a big store or a chain, see if they have a website, and if they do, then have a look on there.
2. This way really is probably the best, just go into your store and ask if theyres any launch parties, or anything for the deathly hallows book. If it isnt having a launch party, never fear because you can always ask if they will open at midnight for people to get the book.
Hope that helps.

Ok, I live in NH, USA... I have gone to barnes n noble in newington for the last couple books... anyway the store has not said anything abuot a party that i know of as of yet...I pray there is (but i'll go check after i type this) but I am thinking of being there at like 4 pm, just to be the first in my area to get it... just to say i was. (If anyone is from around there come join me)

so yeah... i guess you can call me obsessed but dont bother... i know

The only party I am going to be having is the party in my mind while I am sitting there reading DH at long last! biggrin.gif Who needs anything else. A real party will just be a distraction away from my time that I could be reading. And to me, any time spent not reading DH until I have read it through is a waste of time.

Well thats a long list - Some have been already mentioned but that is the full list for the moment . If you are interested in going then vist the waterstones website www.waterstones.co.uk and go onto events. Put in the month July or press on authors and the list will come up with more details. Or you could just pop in the store.

I noticed that my local store is conspicuous by it's absence from the above list. I even checked the website just in case, but it's not there. I might phone them tomorrow, but to be honest I'd much rather support the local independent store I mentioned in my previous post.

Waterstones are a huge chain and the nearest launch party to me is in Cribbs Causeway Bristol and that store isn't that big, and I can imagine that it'll be mobbed. No, I'll stick to the small store.
workaholic_1231
Well there's a mall close by where I live in St. Louis, and the store is called Books-A-Million. That's where I preordered my copy of DH, and the night before, they're having a huge launch party. Supposedly, they show the movies all night, they have little stations where you can make butterbeer and oth HP treats. Also the employees dress up in costumes and everyone else is welcome to do so as well. I was told they would have a costume contest.
That should be one interesting night! laugh.gif
Insomnia
The only party I will be going to is the party in my mind while I am reading DH at long last. Any time taken away from being able to read it as soon as it comes out is a waste of time in my book! tongue.gif I'll have to dust the cobwebs out of my brain so I don't get embarrased when The Trio shows up on July 21!! Have to make a good impression as they wander around my inner mind wink.gif
megan_de_lioncourt
Waterstones is a big chain shop but in my area, Birmingham, the only other book shop that has pretty much all the books i want is Borders. The independent book shops are a dying race in england ..well birmingham at least. I hope it isnt mobbed, but it doesnt really matter because my school have the half day off, and im going up for my birthday to see the film so im probably gonna start outside for like 8 pm... Im going to be so tired. Ill hopefully take lots of piccies

Here in my part of Florida..Borders is having a midnight release party and I wouldn't miss it for the world. Costumes, wizard candy, and Deathly Hallows....its like heaven. laugh.gif

Yep. They're having Deathly Hallows launching parties at most of the Barnes and Nobles in Virginia. It starts at 7pm eastern time in Virginia Beach. They're having prizes for the best dressed person in costume, and snacks, and stuff like that. Sounds really cool. cool.gif
Hilly
Barnes and Noble and Borders up here in Minnesota both always have the midnight release party. I've been trying to get into them for the last three books, but I haven't been able to get a ride. This year though, one of my good friends has an uncle in the business who has gotten her two tickets. I just hope that she takes me. If not, I guess I should start looking for some parties of my own. smile.gif
megan_de_lioncourt
Hilly, If your friend doesnt give you the tickets, heres what to do lol. Get one of your other friends, whos parent preferably have a car lol, and convince them that the harry potter party , will be the party of the year. Lie , but its all in a good cause lmao. Im just hoping my friends still giving me a lift, but i think she is, because we're then having a harry potter themed sleepover at like 2 in the morning.
DracosLady
I am in Las Cruces, New Mexico at the moment and for the next 5 months or so and the Barnes & Noble at the Mall is having a Midnight Madness Party on July 20th and me and a few of my friends are going, I'm going as a Slytherin chick (probaly Pansy Parkinson) another friend of mine is going as Dumbledore (even though he is like 100 years younger than Dumbledore) and another friend is going as Hagrid. We are scoping out costume shops right now for our attire for the night. B&N is going all out, serving butterbeer and the whole nine yards. I can't wait!

Marcey tongue.gif
megan_de_lioncourt
I was thinking of either going as Ginny , because i kind of have the same coloured hair, and we're the same age and all that. Or i might go as narcissa. I think im just going to hire a cloak or something, because ginny doesnt really wear like that weird clothes, so i havent got to dresss up much to be her.
A really fun one i was considering ( although i think the people at the party will hate on me) is Snape. Not that i look like him ( thank the lord) but i think he'd be really fun getting dressed up for and walking around my town lol.
Everybody whos going to a launch party, take photos and then perhaps we could have our own little gallery lol.
etphonehome
I just thought I'd post this link to Bloomsbury Press's web site. It lists some of the indendent bookstores, not only in the UK, but elsewhere in Europe, well France anyway, who are holding launch parties.
Seriouslysirius
Well i wouldn't get a chance to read the book if i did go to the launch partys. And i wouldn't be aloud to go anyway. I'm still fighting the case to go to the bookshop at midnight to get the book. Which i'll say i'm loseing so not a chance in chance for me.

I've pre-ordered my book off amazon so I've kind of ruined going at midnight sad.gif.

Unfortunately all my friends don't read Harry Potter and think I'm a nutter! My family read it but they think because I've read each book more than once that I'm abnormal!!

I might just buy 2 books smile.gif One for all my family to have and one just for me that i can keep in good condition smile.gifsmile.gif I like collecting books you see smile.gif
