Chapter 16
Lily woke up early that morning; something was tapping on the glass of her window. She rubbed her eyes and looked out her window and saw James’s new owl. She let it in and took the note off of it.
Hey Lily,
I was wondering if you wanted to come over to my house again like last summer and spend the last two weeks of summer with me…
Love ya,
James
Lily pulled out a quill and smiled. She had had so much fun with him last summer.
Hey James,
Would you rather come to my house? You’ve never really spent that much time with my parents and you’ve never seen my house.
Love you too,
Lily
She tied it to the owl’s leg and watched it fly out of the window and out of sight.
***
James read the letter three times. He really liked Lily, but he wasn’t sure about her parents. Her mom seemed nice enough but her dad seemed to hate him and James hadn’t done anything wrong that he knew of…
Hey Lily,
We could split it… I’ll come to your house for a week and then you come to mine… How’s that?
Love you more,
James
He leaned back in his chair, balancing it on two legs. He thought it might be better for them if she was at his house when they left and that way they could go to Diagon Alley with him and his parents. Fifteen minutes later his owl was back.
That sounds good… Can you be here tomorrow around 4?
He wrote his reply: Yes, on the parchment and sent it back. He leaned back farther in his chair and fell.
“James, you okay?” His mom yelled.
“Yes Mom, I’m fine!” He called back.
“Six feet on the floor James,” His mom said peeking into his room.
“Hey, I’ve been talking to Lily,” James started.
“Oh, how is she?” His mom asked.
“She’s fine. We were wondering if we could spend the last two weeks of summer together, I’ll go to her house tomorrow and then she’ll come over here for the last week.”
“Okay, can you travel by floo powder to her house?” His mom asked.
“No, she lives in a muggle city, we can’t get there.” James said.
“Well then you’ll have to fly,” She said.
“But Mom, I can’t fly that far, and I can’t just fly up to her house in the middle of the day! Muggles will see me!” James protested.
“Well, me and your father have places to be tomorrow, so you can fly, or not go at all,” His mom said.
“Can I leave tonight? So I can travel in the dark at least?” James asked.
“Is Lily ok with that?” His mom asked.
“I’ll ask her,” James said as his owl flew back into his open window, he scribbled the new plan onto a piece of parchment and sent the owl, that was now getting frustrated, back out the window.
“What are you planning to do with her next week when she’s here?” His mom asked.
“I don’t know we could…”
“Tell your friends that you’re dating?” His mom suggested.
“No, Lily doesn’t want anyone to know,” James said.
“Then she can hide in the closet next week when your friends come over.”
“What?” James asked.
“Sirius, Remus, and Peter are coming over to spend the last week of summer here. Remember me telling you this?”
“No, when did you decide this?” James asked racking his brains for something about his friends coming over this summer.
“You decided this last month.” His mom said shortly. James stared at her with panic in his eyes. “Have fun,” His mom said walking out of his room and closing the door behind her.
James sat there leaning back on the two back chair legs again thinking about his problem with Lily and his friends. The only thing he could do is tell them that they were dating. But Lily didn’t want anyone to know. What could he do? What could he do? What could he do? He could cancel his friends, but then they would want to know why and he would have to tell them. He could cancel Lily, but he already had said yes and he didn’t want to upset her. His only option was to tell his friends that he and Lily were dating. Now he had to figure out to tell Lily…
He figured he could write in a letter and send it to her… But she might hit him… He could tell her when he saw her tonight… But what if she dumped him? He leaned back in his desk chair thinking. His owl flew the window and landed on his shoulder causing him to jump and fall on his back again.
“Six feet on the floor James!” His mom called from down stairs.
“Ok, are you ready son?” James dad asked.
“Yeah,” James said tying his trunk to his broom. It was six o’clock so by the time he got to Lily’s house it would be around seven and getting dark. Lily had told him that they would be going out to dinner with her family.
“Okay, I’m going to put a charm on you so that you blend in with everything. When you get there just tap your wand on your head and it will go away.” His mom said tapping on his head with her wand. He looked down to see his body was transparent.
“Alright, bye, see you in a week,” James said getting on his broom. His parents waved and watched their son fly away.
***
“Dad, please don’t give him death glares all week!” Lily begged as she ran frantically around the house doing last minute cleaning that didn’t need to be done.
“Why would I give Jimmy death glares?” Her dad Harold asked.
“It’s James, and I know you hate him.” Lily said moving a vase over a few inches on a table and then moving it back.
“Lily, I don’t hate James, I just think you can do better than him,” Harold said.
“Doesn’t everyone?” Lily muttered under her breath. This is why she didn’t want her friends to know she was dating. She loved James. James loved her. Isn’t that good enough? No apparently not. They think James should leave Lily alone. They think Lily needs someone who gets good grades and who isn’t in detention all the time. But Lily still liked James. And she couldn’t see why her friends couldn’t just leave her and her love life alone.
“I agree with your father,” Lily’s mother, Tonya, said coming down the stairs.
“Why? What is wrong with him?” Lily asked getting annoyed with her parents.
“He’s just… just…” her mom started.
“Just what?” Lily almost screamed. “Just a really nice guy that I’m not allowed dating because he gets detention? You know, he is really smart, he is a really good student, he just has fun learning but the teachers are so stupid and don’t want to put up with him having fun so they give him detention. I really like him and he really likes me! Why do you have a problem with that?” Lily was close to tears. Her parents were looking for words.
“You know what, just forget, I’m going on a walk,” Lily said after a few seconds of her parents, still searching for words, stutter and mumble meaningless junk.
Lily ran down her driveway and up her street. She felt hot tears running down her face. Why couldn’t people just accept the fact she liked James. She was upset that she couldn’t trust her three best friends, Taylor, Lauren and Holly, enough to tell them that she even liked James. Lily ran and ran and ran. She didn’t know what time it was, all she knew was that James would be here at seven and they were going out to dinner with her parents when he got here. Lily wasn’t sure she even wanted to dinner with her parents now. Maybe they would let her take the car and her and James could go to dinner on there own. But she couldn’t ignore her parents forever. They were her parents, they weren’t going away. Maybe she should just dump James and forget they had ever dated. She couldn’t do that. She started crying harder at the thought of it. She looked up to see where she was. She was at her old elementary school. She looked at the playground, it was empty. She walked over to the swing set and sat on the middle swing and wrapped her arms around the chains and hung her head. Lily was still crying and didn’t notice that someone had sat down next to her.
“Are you okay?” a guy asked as he put his hand on her back in a comforting way.
Lily sniffed and shook her head, “Yeah.” She didn’t look up, she didn’t want whoever was next to her to see her crying.
“Come on, you’ve been here crying for ten minutes, your not okay,” The voice said.
“I’ll be okay… Do you know what time it is?” Lily asked wiping her eyes on the back of her hand.
“About ten till seven. What’s your name?” the boy asked. Lily looked at him. He looked familiar but she couldn’t remember his name. He looked about her age and he didn’t look bad so she decided it was okay to tell him.
“Lily Evans,” She said. “How about you?”
“You don’t remember me Evans?” He asked with a smile. Who was this guy, she knew she knew him she just couldn’t remember his name. She hadn’t seen him for a while.
“No, I’m sorry, I don’t. I’ve been away for a while.” Lily said with sympathetic smile.
“Do you remember going to school here?” He asked. She wished he would just tell her his name.
“Yes,” Lily said looking up at the school.
“Why did you transfer?” He asked.
“I wanted to go to a year round school and I found a really nice one to.” Lily said which wasn’t a complete lie.
“Do you remember fifth grade? I was in your class.” The boy said.
“JAKE?” Lily said suddenly remembering the boy who had ruined her life in elementary by being a complete jerk to her and getting what felt like the entire school to hate her.
“Yep,” Jake said smiling.
“You’re still living here? I thought you moved.”
“I moved back,” he said shortly.
“Oh,” Lily said.
“So are you still into all that creepy magic stuff?” Jake asked. Lily couldn’t help but laugh.
“Yeah a little,” She said smiling.
“You’re not going to turn me into a toad or something are you?” Jake said jokingly.
“Not tonight, no,” Lily said.
“Look at that bird, it looks like its coming toward us,” Jake said pointing up at an unusually large and deformed bird in the sky that was in fact coming toward them.
“That’s weird. Well Jake I think you better go, I’ll see you later,” Lily said realizing that the bird was her boyfriend coming towards them on a broom.
“No I don’t have to go. I want to talk to you some more,” Jake said.
“No, I have to go to, come on,” Lily said getting up. Jake was still looking at the “bird”.
“It almost looks like a person,” Jake said.
“Jake, I think you’re tired, you better go,” Lily said grabbing his hand and trying to pull him out of the swing. She looked back at James and hoped he realized he couldn’t land here. “Jake, let’s go,” Lily said but Jake was frozen in terror. His eyes were fixed on the “bird” which was diving toward them.
“James no not here,” Lily whispered. Jake started screaming. “Jake hush,” Lily covered his mouth with her hand. James landed a few feet from them. He ran over to Lily and hugged her.
“I missed you sweetheart,” He said hugging her.
“I missed you too,” Lily said with her hand still covering Jakes mouth.
“So who’s this?” James asked.
“James, this Jake,” Lily said.
“He’s a muggle isn’t he?” James whispered so that only Lily would hear. She nodded and James turned around and kicked the pole on the swing set out of anger.
“Jake, I’m going to let go of your mouth and you’re going to be quiet right?” Lily said. Jake nodded. Lily let go of his mouth and he sat there quietly.
“You are a witch, I was right wasn’t I? That’s why you moved!” Jake whispered. Lily took a deep breath, she looked at James. James stuck his hand in his pocket and pulled out his wand.
“James no,” Lily said. James winked at her.
“Listen here Jake, you tell anyone what you saw and I swear that you will wish that you were never born. I can do things with this wand that you can’t even imagine in your worst nightmare. Got it?” James said in a threatening voice that even scared Lily. Jake nodded with a sincerely scared look in his eyes. Lily could tell that James was doing his best not to laugh.
“You don’t know where I live, you won’t be able to find me,” Jake stuttered.
“I know where you live,” Lily said. Jake looked at her with true terror in his eyes.
“Don’t tell anyone,” James said. Jake nodded and passed out.
“Oh my gosh!” Lily said starting to rush over to Jake who was now unconscious on the swing but James stopped her.
“No, he’ll think he dreamed it, it will be okay, lets go to your house,” James said picking up his broom.
“Here let me help you,” Lily said and took his trunk.
“So how have you been?” James asked, walking slowly so that they could talk longer.
“Good,” Lily said not looking at James.
“Come on, you were crying when I got here, what’s wrong?” James asked, he was worried about his girlfriend.
“It’s nothing,” Lily said. She couldn’t tell him that her parents hated him and wanted her to dump him and find some one that was supposedly better.
“Lily, you can tell me anything, you know that right?” James said softly. Lily looked at him and gave him a small sad smile.
“It’s nothing,” She said.
“Alright,” James said. Why was his girlfriend keeping things from him? Was she about to dump him? He had seen this a thousand times with Sirius.
“So how has your summer been?” Lily asked after a few minutes.
“Good,” James said. Should he tell her about his friends coming next week now?
“Have you talked to your friends at all?” Lily asked.
“Just by owl, I haven’t seen them yet,” James said.
“Oh, so you won’t see them until school starts?” Lily said. James didn’t think he should tell her yet… Not when she was already upset.
“Yeah,” James said shortly, he hated lying to his girlfriend, but he had to if he didn’t want upset her more. “So have you seen your friends?” James asked trying to keep the conversation going.
“No, I’ve just been talking to them by owl, but since I don’t have an owl I have to wait for them to send me something first and I haven’t heard from them for a while.” Lily said.
“Oh, do you want to borrow my owl?” James asked.
“They would know it was yours and wonder how I got him.”
“Tell them you killed me and took it,” James joked trying to make her laugh.
“Do I seem like I want to kill you James?” Lily asked.
“No, it was a joke,” James said wishing he hadn’t said it now.
“James I don’t want to kill you, I don’t want you to die, I couldn’t live with out you,” Lily said.
“I couldn’t live without you either,” James said smiling at her. She smiled back and they walked in silence back to Lily’s house.
“Where have you been?” Lily’s mom asked when she walked through the front door.
“I went for a walk,” Lily answered.
“You’ve been gone almost an hour,” Her dad said.
“James is here,” Lily said pointing to James in the door way.
“Hello James,” Tonya said then turned back to Lily, “Don’t run away like that again or you will be in some serious trouble got it?”
“Yes mom,” Lily said.
“Go help James put his stuff away he can stay in Petunias room since she’s spending the summer with Alice or whatever her name is…” Harold said.
“Okay,” Lily said and led James up the stairs.
“Why did you run away?” James asked when they got to Petunia’s room.
“It was nothing, don’t worry about it,” Lily said.
“Oh, okay,” James said even though he knew that she was hiding something from her.
“Well, I guess we’ll leave as soon as you’re ready, just dress up a little because we’re going some where that is really fancy and stuff… I’m going to see if my parents will let me drive so that it’s just me and you,” Lily said and left. James opened his trunk and pulled out khaki pants and a navy blue button up shirt. He put them on and tried to fix his hair but it wouldn’t do what he wanted so he messed it up again. He opened the door to leave and ran into Lily.
“Sorry, I was about to knock, my parents said it was okay for the two of us to go.”
“Okay, that’s good,” James said maybe he could ask Lily about telling his friends tonight.
“But I don’t know what I should wear and I want your help,” Lily said shyly.
“Alright,” James said smiling. Lily led the way to her room down the hall. James liked Lily’s room. The walls were a soft green and her bed spread was a light pink. Her room was very clean. James would have known this was Lily’s room even if she hadn’t told him.
“Okay,” Lily said. James sat down on her bed facing Lily’s walk in closet. Lily opened it to reveal a rainbow of colors on one side, all her muggle clothes, and on the other side all black, her school robes. James stood up and walked in to the closet with Lily.
“So what were you thinking of wearing,” James asked trying to remember that he was in the closet to help her find something to wear. For some reason all he could think about was he was in a closet with the hottest girl in school who happened to be his girlfriend who he had never actually kissed.
“Um,” Lily said turning around to face James, “I was thinking about wearing a skirt,” she said. James turned and found all her skirts hanging sorted by color. He started to go through them and Lily stepped closer to him. She was seventeen and had never been kissed before. James had almost kissed her once in the library in fifth year but then their friends had walked in and they didn’t want to be seen. James tried to ignore her.
“What about this one?” James said pulling out a cute flowing skirt that matched her dark green eyes.
“Okay, what about the top?” Lily said and took another step towards him. He took a step back and began to look through her shirts. He wasn’t going to kiss her. He wasn’t going to kiss her. He wasn’t going to kiss her. He wanted to kiss her, he really did. She was just such a good girl and what if she thought they were going to fast or something?
“What about this one?” James said pulling out a plain white top. It had a low neck and over the shoulder sleeves.
“That’s really cute,” Lily said taking it. Hot was the word that James would have used.
“Okay, well I guess I’ll go down stairs and talk to your parents while you get dressed.” James turned and left the closet quickly. Lily stood there. Did he not want to kiss her or something? Did he not like her any more? Maybe he would kiss her tonight…
She got dressed and pulled her long red hair back into a clip on the back of her head. She looked in her full length mirror one more time. She was pleased with the way she looked so she went down stairs to find her parents and James sitting in complete silence in the kitchen.
“Ready James?” She asked.
“Yeah,” He said quickly hopping up from the table.
“Bye, we’ll be home around eleven,” Lily said grabbing James’ hand and walking out the front door before her parents could ask any questions.
