Ever thought why we like Harry potter?
Is it the drama, romance, adventure, characters? Or is it just that we wish we were in the magical world?I s'pose you could like it for any reason.
I still can't figure it out. It's strange because when all I read is HP, I still can't figure out whats good about it. I love it don't get me wrong, I spose I'm just kind of weird like that.
Well, share your opinion...
I couldn't find any other topic like this so correct me if I'm wrong.

I read tons of books, and the HP series is by far my favorite. I personally have always been drawn to magical books! For me, part of the fasination is "What if?" As in what if we are all just a bunch of clueless muggles and something like this is going on right under our noses? I'm no conspiracy theorist, but it could explain why a lot of things happen. For example, 30 degree weather in south eastern coastal Georgia in APRIL! Maybe we've been invaded by Dementors LOL!! Great topic by the way!

Maybe because it was snowing in a couple places the week before Easter and it was cold in Hawaii. Scary.
So back to the topic, I guess I like HP so much because I like fantasy and magic books. It's fun to read about kids going to magic school, and HP is the best book like that I've read. They're very well written too, the plot is exciting through out the whole story not like some books where you get bored half-way through.
The characters are realistic. And basically there's this whole world right under muggles noses. I mean there's magical stuff in real places.

I'm surprised this topic hasn't come up before. I've seen how obsessed are you topics and 'is this a phase' topics, but I'm fairly sure there's not one like this...
Interesting question though and you've kind of got me thinking about it now

Truth is that HP really isn't my usual sort of thing at all. I'm usually more of a horror/thriller/crime fiction kind of girl, and fantasy/magic isn't the sort of thing that usually floats my boat at all. I guess I got into it because I was swept up in hype after CoS came out and my nephew was ranting about it, so I figured I'd give it a go.
I think Sirius was the real hook for me, probably because of the crime thing that appealed. I like the idea of the underdog baddie who's actually a goodie, but a complex one. Sort of a lovable rogue. For a long time, the whole magic of the series, the escapism, the idea of a magical world seemed really captivating and I really started to love it. I loved the clever way JKR wove all she had learned about world mythology into her books and I really loved trying to spot all the hidden things I believed were in the text.
Unfortunately, for me, HP really hasn't been the same since HBP came out. People who've been here for a while will understand because I've ranted about it enough and I don't want to rehash it all again, but I'm afraid the magic died for me in that book. I guess it's because HBP shattered a lot of illusions about the series that it was more than it appeared to be - which it's not.
So why do I still like it? In all honesty...I don't know. I think it's more my desire for completion that will lead me to read DH now rather than because I'm pumped up about it. I'm not even going to a midnight opening as I had planned to - I'll just wait for Amazon to deliver it, I'm not all that bothered anymore.
Weird sort of response from an admin, I guess....but loving the fandom and loving the books aren't really the same thing to me anymore. Haven't been for a long time now, I guess. Maybe I'm just a little jaded, I don't know...
Complex answer to a simple question...sorry

at first I liked it because of the fantasy within it
but after I finished the first book I realized it wasn't the magic that made it good
it is full of emotions , at first emotions of children and then teenagers
it kind of made me live inside them
since the first book and I feel every thing they feel
the fear , hate , love , challenge ,worries
it is really great
maybe if I read it when I was younger I might have got obsessed because of the adventures they do , but I started reading it when I was 19 so the feelings got me better

I too don't know!!

.I mean,I started reading it because I didn't have any kind of reading habits at that time..My father forced me to read it..and then you know, what will happen..It was my all time favourite book.I actually got bored reading the first page of the book. The simpler words which did not have very deep meaning, made me to read on and on..But know I can say that characters are the main reason I'm still reading on.The way JK has designed given each one of them an useful role to play..

I like Harry Potter because it is a mix of all my favorite books, it has love, hate, fear, romance, mystery, action, adventure... everything!! And I never liked magic when I was little, I just never liked it, and then my best friend said "Oh come on, I know you'll love Harry Potter!" And so I read it and now its like I'm addicted to it!! I love magic!! Now the only books I read are about magic... But the girl that got me hooked is no longer my friend because she said I am too obbsessed with it!!
And alos I think that JK is just an amazing author, she puts in just the right amount of details, like not so much to where it is boring, and not as little so that it leaves you wondering...
But I love HP!!

until seeing this topic i never really thought about why i liked the Harry Potter books so much. Then i sat and thought about what it is that makes them so addicting that i spend all night sitting up reading them. The only thing that i thought of as to why they are so addicting is that it has a mixture of so much stuff that its like taking many kinds of books and putting them all together. There is the romance, everyone hopes that certain people end up together and it exciting yet makes you anxious to see who does end up together. Then the adventure of the books. they do so many things and go through so much stuff that in the way it is written it is like you are right next to them doing all that too. what i think makes it so addicting for me is not knowing what is going to happen next, thats why i will stay up til 3 am reading it. I want to find out what happens next in the book and then there is the anticipation to find out what happens in the next book. and even though i've read the books what seems like a million times i always find something new and have to same anticipation to find out what happens next.

The romance in the books has never really turned my head. Shipping has boggled my mind since the first confusing moment when I realized what it was. There are a number of books that get you caught up in seeing what happens next in the relationships far better than HP ever has. The truth is, I find myself tempted to skip ahead when I see romance coming up in HP.
It's not the action that gets me either. I like action. I even think JKR does a decent job with action. But again there are many books that do a much better job with action--if someone came to me for advice on a good action book I don't think Harry Potter would even enter my head (incidentally, if you are looking for an action book, the second book in the Bourne series is probably the best I've ever read).
For me what sets the Harry Potter books apart is quirkiness. The strange names and eccentric characters are what turn the pages for me. Everyone's so over the top. Uncle Vernon is so boarish, Dudley is gargantuanly fat and has to have more and more presents every year, the twins seem to have an absolute disregard for safety in their pranks, Hermione is such a know-it-all, Lockhart is so egotistical, Snape is obsessed with making Potter's life miserable, etc.
Harry Potter's about escapism--catching a glimpse into a world where magic isn't really what makes everyone so different than us. Or maybe it is, but those differences manifest themselves in customs and habits that are not inherently magical (is it magic that makes wizards dress so differently that they can't really dress like muggles, or use a monetary system that's backwards and illogical and barely understand the much more logical muggle system?).
JKR also has a talent for developing a story, as well. She's patient in revealing information so the entire fandom can spend years between books discussing theories.
Louise, you make me depressed sometimes. I hope DH brings you around.

Why I like Harry Potter !!! What is not to like !! The world is beautiful , you can really get lost in it ! JKR is so good at discrabing the Magic world , you really see it infront of you !
And in a strange kind of way the book is really realistic...not everything is just flower and sunshine ...people die and evil lives ! It's a very deep book and has everything in it ! From love conflicts to action . I read the 6th book in just one day ...I couldn't stop !!! Harry Potter is the best book I ever read ...JKR is a genius !!
I like a drog!!! I am really addicted !!

I guess I like HP because it has all of the elements of all good stories, romance, horror, adventure, and mystery. And also I feel as if I relate a little bit with each charactor, especially Draco. The stories are so full of intrigue, and once I started reading HP I was hooked. The romance portion of the books is somewhat dragging on, I don't think that it has any significance to the story overall.
What really gets it for me is like the combo of all of the things that makes for a good book, and in some parts of the books the events leave you hanging on the edge of your seat, leaves you anticipating what will happen next.

Why I like harry potter?...should you even ask?

I like it because it has the main element that I dearly prize in all books that i read...fantasy! but not just the normal happy dappy fantasy that you get in books like narnia (although I luv narnia as well!)...it's like a real life fantasy...unpredictable & unexpected & daring & action & empathy...it's everything that I could possibly want in a book...plus I also like it, because I can actually relate to it & understand all the terminology & action going on...and I also absolutely love the mystery & complete suspense of it all...nearly every page pops out with completely unexpected & wild things! And I love it because it's my form of escapism...it's a time when I avoid the rest of my annoying world & exlore into the curtains of another...and...*sigh*...so many many many more reasons why I love it...but if I were to sit here & type it all out...I might as well be writing a fan fiction!

I think the reason why everybody loves HP is because it's not one of those books that ends in "They all lived Happily Ever After." Rowling has made these books to where they are sometimes far sketched (sp?) but Harry, Ron, Hermione and the rest of the gang go through struggles that many other people face in their lifetime. She writes it in a realistic way that is easy for readers to understand whereas some other books don't do this in a good manner.

I think that the reason that Harry Potter is so appealing is all of the mystery and magic. In present day world, there are so many problems, and when you get really into a book, nothing else really matters. In a book like HP, you're not only leaving your own world to get lost in a book, but you're getting lost in an entirely different world! JK had created an entire world in her works, and to me its that that has sucked me into the HP relm. (sp?)

Id like to elaborate on what i said before because two lines doesnt do the reason why i like it justice. In every book, theres a new twist, or a big surprise. None of it has really been predictable. Also, although it is about magic, its realistic. In the book we see harry make choices, between good and bad ( an onward battle even in our world). The book isnt like normal books that just use the happy things in life. It faces death, it shows us real life reactions. In some books where there is a death its like, the death happened, but thats it. In these books we see the effects they have on harry. He doesnt mourn once and get over it, hes scarred by it emotionally like you would be in real life. The romance in the books is also another reson for why we love them so much. Another reason we like them, is the love throughout every single book in the series. The love between friends, the love between family. The humour is the books also ensures that they arnt all drag and dreary ( which they're not anyway) but the humour carries the characters through. These books are like a word unto themselves.

First - I love the way tis written. with little hints in there and whatnot.
second- adventure runs through my bloood.
third- magical things make me so excited. Just taht feeling as someone said before "what if" I would love magic
I think taht the reason i love HP so much is because not only cause of its excitemnt but because i like escaping from the world and pretending that there is a magical world out there and things happen there and you can do differnt things there.

Everyone has made great points.
I think there are so many reasons people like Harry Potter so much.
It's an alternate interesting world that we can only dream of and can enjoy with lots of enthusiasm. Every bit of is so unique and unlike any other fantasy books that it's intriguing. The depth of the characters, the details of Hogwarts, the many stories and details about spells, magical creatures, and wizards and witches draws us in and is so unique; it makes us want to learn more.
The way JKR writes the characters is humorous and truly lets us get to know them and predivt how they would react as another situation would arise. We get invested in them and have feelings about them and favorites and some that irk us, whether they remind us of someone that bothers us in our lives or they just plain sound like characters we wouldn't like.
JKR's decriptions are humorous and humor is something else that draws us in.
Though the books are fantasy and pretty far off from our lives, their youth and the challenges related to that is something people the ages of the characters can relate to as something they are going through, as can adults who were teens once upon a time.
It's also an emotional roller coaster. Sometimes the books are sad and have us tearing up, feeling pity or even bitterness toward character, have us relaxed and vicariously experiencing all the Harry Potter food while they're on the train or in the Great Hall, or sitting on the edge of our seat in anticipation of what is going to happen next.
It's really the whole package in a wonderful, amazing series and I will die a Harry Potter fan.

Hey,great question! I think that people all over the world love HP beacuse it draws the people that enjoy fantasy, and people can relate to Harry and his friends. Not so much the magic part, but the aspect of being human and dealing with troubles and mountains in our lives. Also, we love it because JK did an amazing job of making the story real and entertaining!

It is easy to visualize and fun to get lost into this world that supposedly, in the books, lives right under our noses! Us poor muggle people!

that is a good question. as for i am the type of kid who hates to read. but i can pick up a harry potter book and read all day. i think for me it has to do with the romance and how it is based on a bunch of kids growing around. i have always loved magic.

I think we like Harry Potter so much because J. K. is such a good author, she draws you into the book from page one, word eight. And she picked a character who's life is horrible, until he finds magic, and kids everywhere are going "yeah, maybe it is real", because you're just sucked into this realm that you never thought about before. So that's my theory.

i am huge lover of fantasy adventure novels.

that is part of the reason, but HP books are just so incredibly written : the detail is incredible, the plot is difficult

but very interesting and gives lots of topics to discusss. i think the books are spectacular. and im betting, even though we probably dont want to admit it

, we were all secretly disappointed when we didnt recieve our hogwarts letter at age 11.

JK Rowling is a wonderful authur, and she is dedicated and puts so much into every detail, but still making it easy to read. She took something that people in the past, and even now, ponder, and that is the existence of witches and wizards. Not only did she do that, but she made it humorous, adventurous, and exciting. She made it relateable and at the same time exotic, and it captured the attention of the world, left us with cliffhangers (for the time being), because everyone knows you can't start something unless you intend to finish it.

I personally love how its written. You just dive into the adventures. Also making fiction realistic is very hard to do but JKR makes many 11 years olds await their Hogwarts letters. Also the books just keep getting better and better and as you keep rereading them you find more and more things that make you say "oh, so that's why it happened. I can't believe i didn't notice that" I lovve it when i discover new stuff in the books.

I have a list of things that explain why we are so obsessed:
-It's extremely creative and original. We hadn't seen or read anything like it before until JKR wrote it!
-It's an escape. When we read it, we are no longer in our world, we are taken to Hogwarts.
-The characters are fascinating.
-The boys are cute. (Haha ... for us girls. Sorry boys..)
-The fact that you become hooked as soon as you pick up the book.
-The fact that we have to find out what happens to everyone in the final book.
-Everything about it!

I think it is because we all want to be part of the magical world. Every one of us want to be part of the Harry Potter world, at least a little. We would love to attend to Hogwarts and stuff, because it is so appealing to us, very beautiful.
I think that's probably the main reason.

At least I think that's why I like it. Because I know everything there is about it and want to be there because of it

I agree with fragglecomegomibayas, I think it's because everyone wants a little magic in their lives, and everyone wants to be apart of it. I mean, to me these books have everything, adventure, fantasy, romance, and its really funny. Or maybe its Jk's way with words. I don't know. Plus, there's so much mystery, it makes us wonder and are brains have to work, it just doesnt solve itselves, and we have to think of what happens. At least, thats why I'm addicted!

I think the reason I am so obssesed is that first of all, I love fantasy, so at first, HP was just another book. When I was in 1st grade, the first movie came out, and I had only read the first two books, but I loved sitting in the theatre pointing out everything that was different, and during the sorting scene I was guessing (correctly) what houses students were sorted into (I was only 7). After seeing that I knew the book so well, I got even more into it, got my friends into it, began theorizing and slowly, I became totally obssesed. And know, here I am, posting away, listening to a John Mayer cd, when I should be outside doing something active. Oh well!

awesome, i think about this ALL the time(sad i know) always trying to pinpoint something. i believe:
-- magic world equals escapism. we all love to escape to a magical land and temporarily believe again in the things we are too old to believe in, like wizards, fairies etc.
-- but at the same time JK has written the books to be completely believeable so we can get into the plot without thinking, "that could never happen," which would ruin the story.
-- adults like to go back to their childhood with harry and his friends, remembering what they got up to/ what they wish they'd gotten up to in school. Adventures are things you can only really have when you're a child because your imagination isn't restricted by what you know. children who read the books won't have this nostaligia, but they will be able to relate to the characters instead, ditto the teenagers as the books progress.
-- they are easy to read, not bogged down with metaphors and long words.
-- also it must be all the hype around the books. i wouldn't find HP nearly as exciting without all the anticipation for the next book, midnight queueing, debating theories, fanfiction etc. without wanting to sound cheesy (even though i undoubtably will), sharing the story of Harry Potter with millions of other fans makes it a million times better

I think that we have a facination with all the magical books because it is something that us as humans only dream we could acheive. I mean who doesn't want to grap a wand and start casting spells? We can also see that living in a magical world would make our lives so much easier we think. And also who doesn't want to live forever? I think that if we could do these things many of us would be more like Lord Voldemort than we think! Just a thought

I personaly love Harry potter because of the things in this exstensive list;
1. Jkr has a wonderfully comic and moving way of expressing feelings and suroundings.
2. The charecters are amazingly diverse and complex. They contain many things that make a charecter good and well-developed.
3. The dioluage is compeling and very life like. It's like there are real people talking to you from the book.
4. It's long. That may sound odd but it's true. Theres more she can put into the book.
5. The plot is very compeling. There is alot that happens in this series.
6. It sucks you in and never lets go.
7. It's amazing.
Thank you.

I think we all just love it because it is just such another world and has inspired us so much. It has changed all so much because our additcitions are to the magic world and Harry. Hiis story is in all our hearts now. It goes down the generations. Children in the garden playing Harry Potter with toy wands. Teenagers and adults inspired to right Fan fictions and read the books with such respect for the auothur J.K. Rowling.
I think when it comes to it. We all like it because it's just such a gripping story with all clues stash inside it. It's like a game of cludeo where you have to find the clues to the outcome.

I think a book stands or falls with the way it is written. You can have an amazing idea but if the writing isn't good, there won't be many people wanting to read it... J.K. Rowling is a very gifted author, the way she writes just sucks you into the story. And off course the idea of Harry Potter is really good.
Another thing I think that matters as well is the human will to believe that there is a supernatural world out there. How can you else explain the many books and movies about magic, vampires, zombies and all of that...

There are so many reasons as to way people love this series so much.
Teenagers may love this book beucase in some ways we relate to the characters in it alot, relationshiop problems friendship problems even the lose of family and friends. As a teenager I think that I can relate to the charaters in one way or another.
I also love these books beucase I love reading about magical worlds and then, this was said on the first page, there is that "What If' factor. my friend and I were discussing this the other night, what if there WAS a magical world and we WERE just abuncha muggles, what if JK is writing this from personal experience. I mean it just makes you think and if you have enough imagination you can belive it.
I love the action, romance and drama in these book and I will be sad when it it over.!

Well, I never really thought of it but I guess one of the reasons I like it is because it's so well written, another would most likely be that it just captures my mind, another, it's just so unique, another, it sort of shows the power and intelligence of women (seeing how a woman wrote it), and last, it's goes way past teen angst.

I have already posted on this topic, but I will post again, as my opinion has changed slightly. I think that everyone likes the series so much because of the fact that it is not just an everyday "fantasy" book. It has drama, romance (but a little too much in book 6), action, and humor all woven into one teriffic series. That's my opinion anyway.

Personally, I think it's because the writing is better than a lot you see nowdays (even the parents like it), the characters are extremely believable, and because it's about magic. There are other books, but they just aren't as good. Plus, it's a very long series and something you can really get into. Every plotline is different, and each book has new settings and new characters.

some of you may think that i'm completly bonkers/insane, but one of the main reasons i love harry potter is because whenever i'm having a bad day, i can read one of the books and it sorta takes me to another place.
the books arent like a lot of the other books now-a-days, and the wrighting is so amazing and JKR knows how to write a page turner, definetly. another reason is because once you get hooked onto one book, you cant put it down!

) i dunno, i just really enjoy reading them, and trying to figure out what happens next chapter.
all i can say is HarryPotterIsLife

and i cannot wait until Saturday!!!!
