Full Version: Quidditch Games: How Many?

How many quidditch games do you think they play each year at hogwarts? In the books I get the impression that they play each house once and then the top 2 teams have a final game to determine the winner. That would mean that they would only play about 2-4 games each year, which doesn't seem like too many given all the time they spend practicing. Any thoughts?
taks
hmm, I think its tornament style, but then that wouldn't seem like enough games, I mean then it could be Gry. V. Sly. and Ravn. V. Huff. and then those two winners (Gry. V Ravn, etc) so there has to be some other way in there.... I guess Quidditch Through the Ages wouldn't have anything about this in there, since its not the broad terms of Quidditch, just Hogwarts Quidditch, oh well... We'll just have to stay at it.

Mmm....well, from what I can gather, each house has to play all the others at some point.....

G Vs R
G Vs H
G Vs S

So that's three matches. Then, from the PoA when they were worrying about Harry losing his broomstick, Fred and George were going on about how the number of points matter. So, if G lose one match, they still have to play the others and then the teams with the highest points would play next, with a house being elimated in each round of the tournament. So it would probably work out something like this:-

Round 1

G Vs R R Vs H
G Vs H R Vs S
G Vs S H Vs S
So each team plays in 3 matches. A total of 9 matches in round 1.
At this stage, the team with the lowest points would drop out, leaving three teams to play 2 matches. Let's say S drop out...coz they're mean... wink.gif

Round 2

G Vs H
G Vs R
R Vs H

3 matches. One more team goes, again the one with the lowest points. Let's say R, coz Cho's there and I don't like her either... wink.gif

Round 3

The Final - G Vs H

Making 13 matches a year. Ooh....spooky.... wink.gif

What do you reckon? Sound reasonable?

taks
hmm, that makes since. 13 games? kinda creepy...

G would win the G vs. H game because Gryfinndor is the best (plus the Hufflepuffs aren't very good tongue.gif)
Louise
Oooh...hang on a second...someone must have put something in my coffee this morning..... tongue.gif

Did I say 9 matches in round 1? blink.gif Shouldn't that be 6?

G Vs R, G Vs H, G Vs S, S Vs R, S Vs H, R Vs H....then all the teams would have played each other at least once, which is only 6 matches.

OMG, my maths sucks, doesn't it?? tongue.gif

So that's 10 matches a year!! Nothing remotely spooky at all!!

Aw....I really thought that was cool then, too.... dry.gif Ah well, there ya go.....that's what happens when you have too little sleep and too much coffee, guys....addles your brain....be warned!! wink.gif tongue.gif

But yeah, Gryffindor would definitely win. biggrin.gif

Well, they might have if Harry, Fred, George and Oliver were still on the team. But the new team suck almost as much as my maths, so unless they have some leprechauns smiling over them, I reckon their chances of walking away with the cup for a second year are about as good as my chances of ever understanding quadratic equations.... wink.gif
zyra123
LOL!! You know what Dana, I didn't notice bout the '9 matches should be 6' either!! Haha!! laugh.gif (but it was late in the night, my brain wasn't on its top functioning condition then.... tongue.gif)

Anywayy, I think you've cover it right there...10 matches altogether. At first, it does seems there's only 2-4 games. Until what happen in PoA when they're counting points and draw out strategies on how many points they have to get before Harry should catch the Snitch.

Good one there, mate!

That's quite possible. What I'm wondering, though, is how the points work. I know that at one point, Gryffindor got 50 points for winning at Quidditch, but are those 50 points what counts for which team has the most points? Or is it the score at the end of the game? Also, there might only be seven matches, if it's:

First Round:
G vs. S
G vs. R
G vs. H
S vs. R
S vs. H
R vs. H

and then the final for the two teams with the most points. I didn't get the impression that they played that many matches in the year, and it was mostly just the practices. It seems sort of strange, though, if they only play seven matches every year. Frankly, it's a bit odd to have only 10 matches, too...

I think that is actually has to do with poit totals seeing that in PoA, They were talking about the match that Harry lost, and were talking about the odds of making up the points in the "two" future matches. there were no "elimination" rounds. after each house plays the other three, the cup is awardsd to the team that had the most points thru all the matches. it just happens to always be down to Gryffindor and slytherin -or- Ravenclaw
a) becuase its the last match of the year, and both are at least les than 150 points ahead of both or
cool.gif because both teams points already surpass the other two, automaticlly placing those two in 3rd and 4th. \

I know, hard to follow, but I think it makes perfect since.

P.S> r/r my fanfic, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince!!!

Each team plays each other once. That's it! Each team plays three games, and there are a total of six games. The team with the best record wins the cup.

If there are two (or three) teams that are tied with a 2-1 record, then the points matter. The difference between points scored by each team minus the points scored against each team is the tie breaker. In POA this is the reason why Gryffindor knew exactly how many points they needed to score to win the cup.

MrLupin
i agree with realbullet. There are a total of 6 games then.I suppose its more like a league then a cup(which would have been a knockout format).First criterion is most no.of wins and then if teams were tied it would come down to points.
Hallia
I agree with realbullet too. At least, thatīs what I gather from reading the books.
swirlctw
i think that there are 4 quiddich games pere season not including the cup. this is because everyone has to have a fair chance to play everyone to see who is playing for the cup(griffindore of course).

but i also read somewhere (i forgot which book sorry) that they where talking about harry and ron losing 50 points or soemthing and that it knocked tehm out of the quidditch cup hopes. maybe house points have something to do with it
Auror37
I agree with realbullet,

I think that each team plays each other once:

G vs. S
H vs. R
G vs. H
S vs. R
G vs. R
S vs. H

So yeah, that would end up totaling six matches. But I don't think that they have a final match to decide the match. They do it all on points. It is all done by points.
quidditch rocks
Ok so from what i understood they play each house once. So lets look at a possible out come?
puff biggrin.gif claw smile.gif griff smile.gif sly tongue.gif
1. 500 50 400 600
2. 300 300 20 10
3. 600 250 300 50
Tot. 1400 600 720 660

Hufflupuff wins! biggrin.gif jerry.gif magic.gif
So each team plays the other team once then the totals from the three games that each team have played are added up so that the team with the highest points wins the cup.

Well, I think each house plays each house once. The two teams with the most points after they go around once square off to play for the Quidditch House Cup or whatever its called.

Gryffindor always seems to play Slytherin, but they rarely mention the other houses, even though we know they do play them. So why would they make sure Gryffindor plays Slytherin and leave the other Houses out? I don't think they would, I don't think Jo would. So each house plays every other houses for a total of four games including the final Quidditch Cup match.

So, for example, Gryffindor scores 100-50 vs Slytherin, 100-25 vs. Ravenclaw, and 50-100 to Hufflepuff, thats a totial of 250 points. (though these scores would never happen, just an example, the snitch alone costs 150 tongue.gif - just an example laugh.gif). Anyways, who ever had the second amount of points, say 225, would play Gryffindor for the final assuming Gryffindor had the first ammount of points.

Thats how I see it at least...
HPChic
I think that every house plays all the other houses, and the house with the most points at the end of the season are the champs. It makes sence because Gryffindors always say thing lyk "We need to beat Hufflepuff by 100 points to win the cup". Even though that's wot I think it is, it seems they do tons of practicing for just four matches a year.
sasuke1247
they're are 3 matches for each house so 6 matches. Its not a tournement. Its like this:

Gry v Sly
gry v H
Gry v R

Sly v Gry
Sly v R
Sly v H

R v H
R v Sly
R v GRy

H v R
H v Gry
H v Sly

Lets a Gry beats slytherian 230 to 150 so Gry gets 230 points and Sly gets 150. At the end of all the matches, they look at the total points and who ever has the most wins the house cup. In the books Gry versus all the other teams once, so it cant be a tounament.
