ok....i was posting on something and i got this idea.....more like a question....but oh well.....anyways....does anyone else think that it may be possible that the sorting Hat is able to die or be killed??? i mean....in the post that i was on when i got this idea, the person who started it was sayin that the Hat had a brain like a human and that he can think and speak for himself just like a human....so i was thinkin....what if, just like a human, it could be killed or it can die of old age or if it can die at all....so what do y'all think??? it was jsut somethin that popped up into my head....

hi snapesgirlforlife, thats a good question, i had never thought of that!
i think that it is not possible to kill the sorting hat, i mean its a hat! ye it has a brain but it doesnt have a heart or lungs so how could it be killed?
when ever i think of the sorting hat i think of just a normal hat that has had a magical spell put on it to bring it to life for ever.

Actually a hat can be shredded, burned, or other normal things so it could die. There is just no reason why anyone should, no one can have a grudge against him and he can't defend himself so really I don't think JK would waste pages on his death

Okay. First of all,
I don't think you can kill a hat..... that's beside the point.
I don't think the Sorting Hat will die because there would be no reason for it, if you know what I mean. That would show Hogwarts in serious turmoil, but it already is, and then it would impossible to truly sort students, which must happen!
Also, in the grand scheme of things, the sorting hat isn't likely to be extreemly important again. It was extreemly important in Book 2, and I think that was its shining momment. As for the hat being a serious threat to Voldy worth killing...
Of course, one could argue that it doesn't have to be a DE and that it could turn out that the sorting hat was working for Voldy in DD's office, but I am not a supporter of that theory.
Thoughts?

that is one thing that will be left to harry by dumbledore.
the hat will end up being another key part in harry's battle.

i know...i am not sayin that the Hat is worth killing....but i am sayin that is it possible that you could kill it becuz it can speak and think for it's self so maybe it could die or somethin
i'm not sayin that i am havin this theory that the Hat is a thret to Voldy or anything...btu i am simplly stating that i want to know whether or not other people think that you could walk up to it and like, stab it or something and then blood would come-out or somethin liek a Human since it acts like a human....or if you could possiblly through it off a cliff or something and it would die from that....not that anyone wants to kill it or anything...that's not what point i was tryin to get across....i was tryin to get people's opinions on whether or not the Hat is so Human active that it could die just like a Human.....you understand yet??? i hope so becuz i'm not tryin to say that anyone would want to kill it or that Voldy wants to kill it or JKR is probablly gonna kill him becuz she doesn't see any other uses for him and you can't make another HP without people getting sorted you know??? so maybe she will....but that's not what i am tryin to say...get it now??? becuz i don't know how to explain this anymore than what i have already....sorry!!!!!

I do not think that the hat could be killed
It is a hat into which the four founder members had put all their ideals into after they had decided to join together and found the school.
At this time they were still very much friends and Slytheryn had not fallen out with the other 3.
Too the four founders it was important that once they were gone that the school continued to be run how they had set it up.
This was when they bewitched the sorting hat for it to continuing picking the best people for to match up with the ideals that the founders had for each of their houses.
The hat offered advice when it felt that Hogwarts was in danger.
I do not think the sorting hat has a brain
When at the sorting it asked the four houses to stick together and by doing this they would beat the dangers that Hogwarts was up against. It was again the founders ordeals that had been bewitched int to hat that made it give this advice
The hat cannot be killed, it can be destroyed

I agree with Loopy_Luna totally. The hat isn't a living thing, so, therefore, it can't be, persay, killed. However, I think that a well aimed curse could destroy it. Handy little tip there, for a first-year unhappy with the house they were placed in...

I don't think you can kill a hat...
I agree with potterprincess. I image that the Sorting Hat is bewtiched. To think, analyze, and sort. I believe that the hat can be destroyed, yes, but I don't think the hat is alive to begin with. However, the hat is pobably not an easy thing to destroy. It has survived over 10 decades and by all the patches on it, I think it's been through, and survived through a lot.

I think that no one would bother using ' Avada Kedavra ' On a hat -.-
Its already life in Azkaban... who would waste life in the most horrible place in the world ON A HAT!?

Good point there, I mean who would really waste their time killing a hat. But the thing is, would you go to prison for killing an object?
I don't think so, the hat has no or very little human characteristis, all it can do is think and speak. Killing a hat will not land you in Azkaban.
I don't think you can really, kill the hat. He is not necessarily alive, yeah sure the hat can be destroyed, but that doesn't make him dead. Think about it, it's like trying to kill a lamp, you have to destroy it.. but it was never alive.
I don't think Avada Kedavra could kill a hat, sure the hat is enchanted to seem alive, but aiming spells trying to hurt it in a way or end its "life" is pointless.

First off - the hat is not actually alive.. it is bewitched..
and second: It doesnt matter what you use Avada Kedavra on.. even if nothing: It is an UNFORGIVABLE curse... anyone that uses it would be taken to azkaban.
Hehe, so harry should be in Azkaban for using Crucio x]

I don't believe that the hat can be killed. You can torture it by burning it, cutting it, shredding it, but why waste your time doing that?
This is a very interesting that you bring this up. It's definitely a question I have never thought of. It's very original and I applaud you on that

Just another thing to add. Does anyone else think, like me, that the Sorting Hat is probably the most accomplished legilimens in the world? It's got to be at least one of he best. I would also think that the founding fathers were all probably very accomplished legilimens as all great wizards seem to be because before the hat was created I'm sure the way they sorted was by looking into the minds of students like the hat does now. I don't know how this could possibly apply to the book and I'm pretty sure it isn't important at all but the thought came to me and I thought it was cool.
