JK Rowling was asked the question, ‘did you feel the actors suit the characters of your books when you first met them?’
To which she responded “Yes. Emma Watson in particular is very, very like Hermione. When I first spoke to her, I knew she was perfect, from that first phone call.
So here’s a similar question for you all! Which actor/actress do you all think is the best suited to their character?
I agree with JK in that Emma is perfect for Hermione, I’d also point out Alan Rickman as Snape, I think his speech is so unique and perfect for Snape. Alan is such a good actor and has the characteristics and poise of Severus Snape down to a tee! My choice would be Emma though, topped off by her Oxfordshirian accent, exactly as Hermione would sound in my opinion.
So, which actor/actress do you feel is the best fit for their character?

The old dumbledore(the one for PS and CoS) was the best.Hermione and Ron are pretty good too.Harry should wear contacts or something to make his eyes green...i mean,Dans eyes are blue.Snape and Rubeus Hagrid really look and speak like their parts, too.

I think that a lot of actors fit their roles pretty good. Emma for one, and Maggie Smith, I like the way that she portrays McGonagal(sp?). I also like Robbie Coltrane playing the role of Hagrid. Oh, and Richard Harris of course who played the first Dumbeldore. He was just perfect for the part! The best person though to me who fits their role is of course Alan Rickman who plays Snape. I love Snape now because of him. Sneaky, conniving, and never knowing whether to trust him or not, he plays the part real well.

Did you lot know Tim Roth was originally gonna play Severus Snape in the films? He turned it down, opening the role for Alan Rickman. I bet he regret it now though lol, 4 highly successful films, 1 on the way and 2 to be produced, and a film franchise that will go down as one of the most successful ever.

Hehehe. Yes, Emma was super in the first two films, and Rupert in the first. Then...
Gah, perhaps I'll feel ranted out about this at some point, but for now I'm still awfully ticked off with both Emma and Rupert. They were so spot on in the first film, and now they've somehow turned Ron and Hermione into emotional freak shows. Sigh. I'm reading through the series again, and seeing the characters progress like they do in the books puts what is happening on film into sharp perspective. Emma was horrifying in GoF. Rupert too.

I watched it again the other day on TV and I was cringing in every scene. My friend's mother saw it too and actually asked my friend what on earth I saw in the story - and she's a cool woman! She just didn't get it and I understand why.
But yeah. I think Dan is a good Harry, and Alan Rickman a superb Snape. Although I pictured Sirius differently originally, Gary Oldman has replaced the Sirius I had in my head, he's so good! I think Neville (what's the guy's name?) is really a great actor too. I can see him making it as an actor. He seems to be very smart too. I'm glad they've fattened him up for OotP.

Neville just has to be chubby, and then he's really exactly as I picture him.
Oh yes, and Robbie Coltrane. Jo asked him to play the role, so he's obviously perfect.

I completely agree with you about Emma, she was perfect in the first film...but they made her prettier beginning with the third film. I think that Rupert was so hilarious in the first few films..when I first saw him, I thought that his facial expressions were perfect for Ron...he still does have funny expressions! Hedwig, I agree with you on the fact that they should've made Dan wear green contacts..it would have been really easy to do! And they are really important!

Maggie Smith is awesome as well...she is stern and a no-nonsense character...she fit it perfectly!

It's kind of amasing because Cho is exactly like I pictured, the casting gods smilied when they cast Katie Lang. I think that the casting people have made very smart choices so far about everyone, really. I so enjoy wacthing Dan, Rupert, and Emma grow. And think that they just keep getting better and better.

I dont know if this is true but I heard that they tried to get Dan Radcliffe to wear contacts but he had a bad reaction to them that made his eyes go funny so he couldn't wear them.
I love Emma as Hermione, although perhaps that's from the memories in my mind of Hermione from the first two films. Thinking about it, her character has "lessened" a bit. She is not as annoying as i think I would find Hermione and is not AS geeky. It looks a bit fake in GOF.
I agree with UnknownLocket that Maggie Smith is great. Im looking forward to her rebellion against Umbridge in OOP film! I think the way she balances being stern with having a soft spot for the trio is really perfect for McGonagal!

I agree that Robbie Coltrane is deffinitely perfect, especially if he was picked! Along with him, I love Dame Maggie Smith's portrayal of Professor McGonagall. She's exactly as I imagined. Aside from the older actors, I love seeing Emma play Hermione. I think some things should be changed about Hermione's character in the films but nonetheless, Emma fits the role.
Almost all of the Weasleys are perfectly portrayed in my eyes. I have nothing at all to complain about with them because they're just like I pictured.
However, as much as I love Alan Rickman and his character Severus Snape.... I don't think he's really what the character was supposed to look like. Snape is described with negative descriptions, and with Alan Rickman playing him, it's impossible to find anything negative! I'm not saying I'd want anyone else to play Severus, or that I'm upset, I just think that there's a further gap between his film character and his book character by means of appearance.

rupert grint is definately most suited out of the main 3
alan rickman is fantastic
as is robbie coltrane
maggie smith is good, but i think she needs to be slightly more stern
lupin (sorry i cant remember his name lol) is brilliant as well
james and oliver are also perfect for the role
and matthew lewis as well
emma watson used to be suited to the role, i dont think she is any more, i think her acting skills have dropped dramatically
and i never thought daniel suited the role
*Priori Incantatem*

yea i agree with emmaj21 with rupert grint being the best suited for his role, where the trio is concerned and also on alan rickman - the man is simply amazing!
lol and robbie coltrane makes me laugh so much, hes brilliant
and i really loved richard harris, the first dumbledore - i think he was perfect for the role, his voice his actions and just everything was perfect for him to be dumbledore

I think that all of the cast are perfect! The trio are great, as is Snape and McGonagall. I also thought that Umbridge and Luna in OotP were perfect. I also thought that Richard Harris as Dumbledore was perfect. Hagrid.. and all the Weasleys are great too.

I think they all do a fantastic job playing their roles! I don't think they could find anyone better to be honest.
Daniel Radcliffe as Harry - He does a really good job portraying, especially in OOtP, Harry's feelings and that's what makes a character.
Rupert Grint as Ron - Hilarious. He's perfect. I can't wait to see him in the next two movies. He's lived up to all my expectations so far and I don't expect he'll let me down.
Emma Watson as Hermione - She makes a great goodie two shoes slash know it all. She's great. The only critisim I have for her that has nothing to do with her character is that she used her eye brows too much. Aha.
Evanna Lynch as Luna - Aha. She was wonderful. I won't post anymore because I don't want to release big spoilers.
Maggie Smith as McGonnagal - Perfect stern-ness. She's a great strict teacher. Love her.
Alan Rickman as Snape - He's probably my favourite as far as how accurate they are to the book. He is right in there for the character. I really don't know what else to say. He's fantastic.
Michael Gambon as Dumbledore - He's the one I don't like too much. I prefer Harris' Dumbledore a million times more than him. He didn't carry on with Harris' Dumbleodre which was, ultimately, the perfect Dumbledore.
Olliver and James Phelps as the twins - They are hilarious and wonderful. They couldn't find anyone better.
Bonnie Wright as Ginny - We haven't really seen to much of Ginny so I hope we do in HBP. For what she has done, I think she's been great.
Tom Felton as Draco - He's the perfect evil. He does an amazing job and he better stick with it until the very end. I can't see anyone else in his shoes.

Rickman for me is the perfect Snape. I can't explain why, I just think he's the perfect actor for Snape. Same goes for Maggie Smith as McGonnagall, she is absolutely perfect. She is as stern as I imagine McGonnagall to be in the books, and looks like how I thought McGonnagall would look like. And Richard Harris was just brilliant as Dumbledore, he had the character to a tee. Shame Gambon had to come and spoil it after Richard Harris' very sad and untimely death.

I personally think that Rupert is very Ron-like. He is exactly like how I pictured him. His hair is the perfect color red, more orange actually. I pictured Ron kind of nerdy in the first films and got better looking as the years went on. I also think Alan Rickman is absolutely perfect. Mostly because of his voice. Maggie Smith IS McGonagal. Emma and Dan are great too. I loved Katie Leung as Cho and Bonnie Wright as Ginny.I loved Chris as Percy in the fifth movie. I almost screamed in the theatre when I saw him with Fudge. I admit I didn't like Evanna Lynch at first when I saw her picture. But when I saw her in the movie she was amazing. Her being Irish was perfect.

I imagined Ron's hair a little more firey, but I think Rupert is great as Ron! Not just in looks, but in the way he acts. Kinda nerdy, always kinda awkward, always a loyal friend, and quite funny!
I love love
LOVED Gary Oldman as Sirius!!! Played him perfectly! Aside from the fact that they made him up a little different than I liked (okay, allot), still AWESOME!
David Thewlis is a great Lupin. Love how he plays him. But he ain't at all what I'd imagine him [Lupin] looking like....
Daniel is getting better and better as Harry. In GoF I think he tried a little too hard at some points....but he's really good.
Emma...oh, dear. I really liked her in the first two films, but now she's a bit less Hermione-ish than I had hoped. But I think part of that might be the directors fault.
Evanna I didn't know very much about at all! I wasn't sure how she'd do. I didn't like her at first- I thought they were making her hair too bleached. But now I think it really fits the character by giving her a more dreamy feel. And I think she pulled Luna off just PERFECTLY!
QUOTE
Maggie Smith IS McGonagal.
YES! I see her in other films and I still can't help but expect her to take away points!

She's just perfect as McGonagal!
I'm still uncertain about Bonnie as Ginny. She pulled off the secretive little girl in the first movies very well! Acting all shy and such...I think Ginny needed a larger part in the 5th movie, but Bonnie was also great then, too. Ginny gets more brave, and more bold as she ages. That's why I wish she had a bigger part in movie 5, because she was dating around and such and we could tell 'This girl really is changing!'. I'm really curious to see how she pulled it off!
Alan Rickman IS Snape! He just is. Perfect for him. He's just sooo awesome as him. I am not watching a movie when he comes on- I'm watching Severus Snape!

I think the trio, Dan, Emma, and Rupert are perfect for their parts. I feel they play those characters just the way they are in the books. I think there is a lot of chemistry between Emma and Rupert, so it makes the romantic relationship between Ron and Hermoine believable. I completely think that Dan has come full circle with Harry. I think he has really gotten in touch with what Harry is feeling and all that he is going through. I feel that he really captured Harry's emotions in the 5th movie. I love his blue eyes, but yes, for Harry he should have green.
Alan is completely awesome as Snape. I could not have picked someone any different to play that part. He is so convincing, and just molds that part. He has got Snape nailed, and there is not another actor out there that could play Snape any better. I love him as Snape.
Tom as Draco is perfect too. Every time I read Draco in the books now I think of Tom. He has him perfected. It is like he was born to play that part. I love him as Draco, and he looks and sounds just like I pictured Draco would. I love him, he is what made me love to hate Draco, ha ha.
I have way to many favorites to pick just one.

I think that My choice is
Ron( out of the Trio) is the best. Not, only as an actor but, actually fits his role. Out of all of the kids RON is the most Natural when it comes to acting.
As for the Adults.
Alan Rickman is THE MAN

he is truly an amazing actor.
Maggie Smith( Wishing her luck with her health) Is also great. She does look & sound like the Spinster Governess/ # 1 Female witch at the school. I must say though. That her voice does get on my last nerve

That schrill(sp) drives my crazy.
Richard Harris was good( too bad that he was ill) Dumbledore as I read him is more like the OLD wise man( a step or 2 under Gandalf) But, Michael G. seems to play him like somekind of Old Man Hippie.
Tom Feton( I hope that I am spelling their Names Right) is the Perfect Draco. Same goes for his father.
Jason Issac is the perfect man for the role. I have been watching james for years now ( he has been around for a very long time). He is the perfect villian/bad guy. But he does get carried away sometimes. He even mentions this himself after the COS movie. They had to tell him to reel it in with Dobby.

I think we are now so used to seeing the main characters in their roles that they all fit perfectly. I guess there are always going to be some exceptions like Michael Gambons version of Dumbledore, but even then I'm used to him now so wouldn't change him.
The voices are what make it for me with some of the adult cast members. Jason Isaacs superior, aristocratic, clipped, English voice is brilliant. And Alan Rickmans, well he just is Snape isn't he. Whe I first read PS, I didn't put accents on anyone except MacGonnagal, being a MC she had to be a Scot and for me Maggie Smith does the best accent, just a little exaggerated...perfect!
The jury is still out on Ralph Feinnes, I guess that's because Voldemort so far hasn't had a massive speaking part. He's a great actor and I expect that by the time he and Harry have had their final confrontation in DH. I'll be convinced.

I have to agree with Elaine. Having seen these actors play their parts all this time make them all appear perfect for their roles. We're just so used to seeing them that someone else coming in to take over would just be hard to swallow.
At first, I found the actress who was chosen for Luna as all wrong. But now that I've seen her in OotP...several times

... I couldn't imagine anyone else doing a better job. It's just what we become accustomed to.
I'm sure that the actress who is to play Lavender will appear strange at first, too, but I bet she will appear perfect for her role as time goes on.
So, in essence, I think they are all perfect for the parts they play. Granted, there's one or two people I think could be a better actor/actress, but I still couldn't imagine anyone else filling his/her role.

Hi!

I have always been curious about this and thought I'd start up this topic. Talk about if you think the actors portray their characters good/bad. Was it the way you pictured it while reading? Do you think they look like the characters? Feel free to start new questions about anything else!
Ali_Jesus_Freak
Jul 6 2008, 10:22 AM
Okay, well, the thing is that once you've seen even movie 1, you cannot picture the characters any way else. The only exception to this is the minor changes made in the films, such as dan's eyes and hair, emmas hair, and various other differences with physical appearance. Of course, you can't get everything right, and acting ability is generally more impartant than how they look. Also, a director may interpret a character differently than we did, and made appropriate changes. Personally, I think most characters matched up with how I imagined them, some even more so! In terms of acting, I think, for the first few films, Emma Watson wa perfect in her portrayal of Hermione. I've given a massive post on how that changed in the thread dedicated to her, so I wont go into details. Alan Rickman, Rupert Grint, Maggie Smith.... all perfect! All in all, I think they all played their characters really well.... and I'll stop rambling now

Most of the characters measure up to my general image of the character. I'm not terribly good at picturing a person in my mind, so I generally get my ideas on the character from the movie. This may explain why I agree so readily! But there are definitely things where I'll look at or hear an actor and go "Oh, he could have played Dumbledore!" or something. I think the casting people for harry potter did a good job.

I think the best fitting actors and actresses are...
Evanna Lynch for Luna Lovegood, she looks the way I imagined her, and she has that certain unusual wisdom. I think that was 100% a perfect match.
Alan Rickman as Professor Snape, he looks right, he is cruel to the perfect extent, and still completely awesome and I cannot wait to see how he does in Deathly Hallows when his true character is finally revealed.
Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagall, has the appearance down, and she seems perfectly strict but you can also sense how much she actually cares about her students in the movies.

All the actors seem to fit how they would act to a tee (in my mind at least). As many have mentioned there are excellent examples as well. Snape blew my expectations. McGonagall also is a super fit. Again yes, Dumbledore was loads better in 1 & 2.
I was wondering, since the characters now have physical personality and features, does anyone feel the books have lost some of their splendor? I have lost a little of the magic. Now when I am visiting the Wizarding World I find it too movie like, I find myself picturing the scenes directly from the movie. Some of the nostalgia has been lost. I loved the openness of the world. Now it has been lost to Hollywood.
The movies are wonderful and done with the best in mind. I just can't help but feel that somehow Harry has lost something since he made the transition to the big screen. I treasure HBP and DH as they are the only books not to have preconceived notions now. I just dread the day I see the film and lose the memories forever.
I know I could avoid the movies, but I find that there is something that is added from them. It does outweigh the loss I will undergo when I go back and reread, but I like all things Harry so I will go to the theater come release time.

I would ahve to say that most of the actors/actresses play their role very well.
A few from my top list would have to include the characters Severus Snape, Albus Dumbledore (Harris not Gambon), Minerva McGonagall, Luna Lovegood, Dolores Umbridge and Hagrid.
I really don't think people give the actor (sorry but I don't know his name) who plays Hagrid enoguh credit. He plays it so well and is so passionate about his role.

I think Rupert is perfect as Ron. The way he looks, and his expressions are very Ron-like. I also thought that Richard Harris was the most amazing dumbledore! I actually think most of the actors and actresses are really well picked for their roles. Surprising really, as that isn't always the way it turns out.
My favorite is Luna played by Evanna Lynch. She's exactly how I imagined Luna in every possible way. From her looks, to her voice. She's perfect. Also Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagall. She's amazing! And Richard Harris as Dumbledore! (Not Michael Gambon.

) Alan Rickman as Snape too! He's perfect! I think Ron's pretty close to perfect too. Hermione was great in the first three, but I don't like her in the fourth and fifth. The last 'perfect' I'll mention is Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy. Perfect!

I think Richard Harris as Dumbledore was the most accurate. His voice and body language were awesome. When J.K described Dumbledore she put him as a very pacific guy who was very human and Harris portrayed that perfectly in my opinion.
As I remember the other actors in the films I can't think of another that has done as good as R.Harris.
I think they lack credibility.

I didn't start reading the books until after the movies were out, so I can't say the characters I imagined in my head matched up to the people who played them in movies. However, I will say that both Ron and Luna play their parts very much like the characters in the book! I think they do a good job of portraying them. I also think Mrs. Weasley is played very well my Julie Walters. I know that I saw these people while reading the book, so its easy for me to say that I liked their portrayals. However, I don't like that Emma Watson acts with her eyes. That bothers me. I think she is starting to look less and less like Hermion but she plays the part good. All the actors are really great at what they do. No one acts corny or over the top, which is a good thing in my opinion.

Oh and let me add that I think Imelda as Umbridge was pure genius! I don't think anyone could have done a better job! She made me cringe in the movie!

I think that in the first 3 movies Rupert Grint did a fantastic job of Ron. In GoF and OoTP he quiet down a little bit, which to me was unlike Ron. The same thing happened with Emma Watson as Hermione a little bit. Until GoF, she was perfect. Now that she is older things seemed to have changed. And I agree that Julie Walters does a great job of Molly. Alan Rickman is the PERFECT Snape. I was also very impressed with Evana Lynch's performance as Luna. I look forward to seeing her again in HBP (once it is released! grr!). Tom Felton defiantly pulls off Draco. better than anyone else would anyway.

Evana Lynch plays great for her role. I think Luna is Evana... Alan Rickman did a good job as Snape. I like the way he speak. calm and cold. Rupert and Emma were great too. They're just perfect. And I like Richard Harris played the first Dumbledore. He looked so wise in Dumbledore's robe. What a pity he died... but Michael Gambon did a good job as well. Anyway, my favorite one is Thewlis as Lupin. He was just what I imagined.

Rupert is perfect as Ron!

Hooho, I had to said that ... again. He acts really well, and he's the kind of Ron I would have imagined (well, I imagined him a bit slankier, but never mind), the voice and all. Daniel is good too, but sometimes he overrreact his crying scenes, and that's not very Harry-ish, I think. And Emma, I agree in that Emma sometimes act more girlish than Hermione, since she'd have to be bookish, and more stern sometimes.
When I first Evanna in the movie, she didn't resembled at who I had in mind, but now I think that she's the perfect Luna in looks. The only thing I find slightly annoying is the
toooo dreamy and slow voice, I know Luna had it but not so pointedly.
Alan Rickman is perfect as Snape, there's no doubt about it: he sound evil and cold and paused.
Maggie Smith is good too, but I think she should be sterner, and Michael Gambon is sometimes more rude than the real DD, it was spotted in GoF, and I didn't like that scene too much, when he asks Harry whether he put his name on the goblet or not.
Imelda Staunton was ... like too revolting, and I suppose she would have to be more rude.
Then ... the man who plays Filch, don't remember his name, his the perfect Filch! Disgusting and all, he sucked (in a good way) in OotP!
And aunt and uncle Dursley, they could be ... different, but anyway, I don't complain about any of the actors because I get they do their best
And Tom Felton is very good too!

I didn't start reading the books until after I saw the first 5 movies, so now I have all the actors faces in my head when I read the books. But I have to agree with almost everyone... Alan Rickman IS Severus Snape! I thinks he's perfect as Snape; looks, voice, body language.
I think almost all the actors fit their characters really well; especially Rupert; he has great comedic timing just like Ron. Robbie Coltrane too. He's a great Hagrid. I really like Emma and Maggie Smith and how could I forget Tom Felton. He has the perfect face for Draco-just like JKR describes him in the books. He has that drawl and scowl down pat! I really love Dan and Rupert. They really play the roles quite close to the book versions of the characters.
I also love Emma in PS and CoS. She is a good actress but I think Hermione's portrayal in the later films doesn't do Emma much justice (or possibly the other way round).
Alan Rickman goes without saying as do Miriam Margoyles, Maggie Smith, Julie Walters, Imelda Staunton, Richard Griffiths, Tom Felton, Michael Gambon as did Richard Harris, well basically the whole cast bar one or two.

I think the people who best fit their roles are Evanna Lynch and Alan Rickman. They just are their characters. Evanna looks just like how I imagined Luna to be: the way she looks, and the way she speaks is perfect. And Alan is the perfect Snape. The way his voice is; it's perfect for Snape. And he can be evilly suave as well. It is so fitting. I also like Richard Harris' Dumbledore was perfect as well. Too bad he passed away. He was amazing as Dumbledore. The lady who play Umbridge was spectacular as well. Her name escapes me at the moment, but she could be mean, while being 'innocent' at the same time.

I think the people who best fit their roles are Evanna Lynch and Alan Rickman. They just are their characters. And he can be evilly suave as well. It is so fitting. I also like Richard Harris' Dumbledore was perfect as well. Too bad he passed away. He was amazing as Dumbledore. Kel, awesomly said!!!
Alan Rickman is the one that almost always stands out for people. My dad hasn't read the books but saw all the films except PS and one of the most memorable performances for him was Snape. Another memorable one is Hagrid.
P.S you mean Imelda Staunton, she played Umbridge

Alan Rickman does a wonderful job at playing Severus. I could never imagine anyone else playing him so well. Whenever I see an illustration of Severus, I can't believe that's how J.K. pictures him. I always picture Alan as the best Severus.
Helena Bonham Carter is my favorite actor in the movies. She pulls off the cruel and wicked persona of Bellatrix nicely. Especially in the Department of Mysteries when I first saw her, and she was taunting Harry. It made me hate her almost immediately. I fell in love.

Seriously, she is a very nice actress and I also liked her in Sweeney Todd and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (despite the small part).

OOh yes! Helena is awesome in Sweeney Todd! She did a great job there with the songs and she's that interesting type of person, not your average Hollywood plastic barbie so I really enjoy her roles. I thought she was overtop in HP at first but she does suit Bella.

I have five who I think are pretty much the epitome of what I expect their character to be:
Alan Rickman-Snape
Evanna Lynch-Luna
Maggie Smith-Professor McGonagall
Helena Bonhman Carter-Bellatrix
Imelda Staunton-Professor Umbridge
