The other thread had quite a lot of posts in it, so I thought a new thread would be a good idea.

Padfoot12 is up, because he/she got the last riddle. Give it a day or so, and if he/she hasn't turned up, please feel free to post your own riddle.
The rules:
Once a riddle is given and a member answers correctly, confirmation must come from the person who originally gave the riddle. When the answer is deemed correct the member who answered is allowed to post a riddle.
Exception to this rule: If the guesser or confirmation never come, the thread is allowed to be "bumped" with a new riddle. But we're talking several days here, not hours. If you want to check out how that works, our original Riddles and Jokes thread can be found
here.
Have fun!

I'm as small as an ant, as big as a whale. I'll approach like a breeeze, but can come like a gale. By some I get hit, but all have shown fear. I'll dance to the music, though I can't hear. Of names I have many, of names I have one. I'm as slow as a snail, but from me you can't run. What am I?

What about a shadow?? It can be small or big depending on the person and if you dance so does your shadow, but it can't hear. And a shadow can have many names since there are lots of people, but only one because each person's shadow has their name I guess (??). Oh, and you can't run from it! I don't know about the hit part or any of the rest, but am I even close?

Ok, here's my riddle (sorry if it has been done before):
A man was to be sentenced, and the judge told him, "You may make a statement. If it is true, I'll sentence you to four years in prison. If it is false, I'll sentence you to six years in prison." After the man made his statement, the judge decided to let him go free. What did the man say?

i got this answer on the internet:
He said, "You'll sentence me to six years in prison." If it was true, then the judge would have to make it false by sentencing him to four years. If it was false, then he would have to give him six years, which would make it true. Rather than contradict his own word, the judge set the man free.

What I came up with is God. I don't know if this is a religious riddle but that's what I came up with. Cause God was in the beginning of eternity and will be till space and time ends and every place. So is God the right answer?

is it darkness because there has always been some since the beginning and always will be and when the world is ending it will be dark and when places are ending it is dark... once again probably wrong

What about life? I'm running out of ideas. I have another idea but I don't think it's right. Because there's been life forever cause God is alive. But I'm not sure. I'm thinking along those kinds of lines. So is it life?

Let's get this thread started again. Remember, only one riddle at a time, and whoever gets the riddle right has to (gets to) give the next riddle. Here we go.
Abe, Ben, Cory, Dex, and Emmy all belong to a very exclusive club which only admits a small percentage of applicants. Allie, Bob, Charles, Dan, and Ella were all denied membership. Can you name two Harry Potter characters that would get in? Your answer is correct when you can name two that would get in and explain why. There may not be enough information contained in this riddle to answer at first, but as more people guess more information will be available as I will tell you if your characters would or would not get in. Good luck!

ginny and bill because the letters of their names are alphabetical
for example in Allie's name, i comes before l in the alphabet, Bob- b comes before o, and so on, but abe, ben, cory, dex, and emmy's names all contain letters in alphabetical order.

I'm not sure if this has been done before, but ya..
Ok, so you are extremely ill and you have nine pills, eight of them will kill you, and one of them will cure you. The one that will cure you is slightly heavier than the others. You have a balancing scale and two measurements. How do you decide which one to take?
Albus-wan
Aug 7 2007, 01:18 PM
Let's see. If you only needed half the pill to get better, you could cut all the pills in half and start feeding them to your friends. When a friend lives, you take the other half of the pill that they took.
Or, if you like your friends and if it requires an entire pill or even a quarter pill to kill you, then you take less than the amount that will kill you, then wait to see if it makes you sicker. If it doesn't, then you take the rest of the pill. If it does, then you wait a reasonable time period and try again with another pill.
What was the stone that you get from the gut of a goat that reverses poisoning? You could have 8 of those on hand.
I guess if you absolutely didn't want anyone to be taking poisonous pills, though, you could split the pills into groups of three and put two groups of three on either side of the scale. The heavier group contains the pill so you've narrowed it down to three. If neither is heavier than the third group contains the pill and you've still narrowed it down to three. Now you take two of the three and weigh them on the scale, and take the heavier one. If neither is heavier, then take the one that's not on the scale.

haha for a minute there i thought you were serious. your last one was correct, i take it youve heard that one before? haha.
Albus-wan
Aug 8 2007, 02:44 PM
I've heard a variation of it.
All right, I've given a version of this one before, but it's been long enough that either no one remembers it, or if they do remember seeing it, they won't remember the answer so I feel no guilt giving it again.
Fred and George use a 15 pound weight to measure out bulk quantities of Canary Creams, Pygmy Puffs, and Instant Darkness Powder on a balancing scale. Ron borrowed the weight to try to plug up the hole in the wall where the garden gnomes would climb back through after the garden had been de-gnomed. Unfortunately, he broke the weight into 4 pieces. When he brought the weight back, to his surprise the twins weren't upset at all.
"With these 4 weights we can now measure every weight from 1 pound to 15 pounds in 1 pound increments," Fred explained.
How much did each of the 4 weights weigh?
HP'sPrincessFiona
Aug 8 2007, 11:22 PM
The weights are 1,3,4,and 7 lbs
i've explained using a chart following the format: desired weight of substance- left side of scale/ right side of scale
*x= substance being measured
1- 1 lb weight/ x
2- 3 lb weight/ 1 lb weight, x
3- 3 lb weight/ x
4- 1 lb and 3 lb weights/ x
5- 1 lb and 4 lb weights/ x
6- 7 lb weight/ 1 lb weight, x
7- 7 lb weight/ x
8- 1 lb and 7 lb weights/ x
9- 3 lb and 7 lb weights/ 1 lb weight, x
10- 3 lb and 7 lb weights/ x
11- 4 lb and 7 lb weights/ x
12- 1 lb, 4lb, and 7 lb weights/ x
13- 3 lb, 4 lb, and 7 lb weights/ 1 lb weight, x
14- 3 lb, 4 lb, and 7 lb weights/ x
15- 1 lb, 3 lb, 4 lb, and 7 lb weights/ x
sorry if its a little confusing.

This is a continuation of my last one.
Hermione visits the joke shop and notices that Fred and George are using a 40 pound weight for bulk items. After hearing about how they made the best of Ron's mishap, Hermione tells Fred and George that they could break the 40 pound weight into four smaller weights that would allow them to measure every increment from 1 to 40 pounds in one pound increments. George says it's impossible because you'd need at least 6 weights to do that. Who's right? How much does each weight weigh?

Almost. I would give it to you because I was careless and forgot to mention that the new system cannot depend on any other weights (including the weights from the previous riddle), but a major hint was already given in HP'sPrincessFiona's answer to my previous riddle. Also, if you like sequences, the answer to this one is a sequence very similar to the sequence of the weights in the previous riddle.
Good luck. This one's slightly harder than my previous riddle.

OK...a nice easy one from the me......
A Long Bustrip
A doctor and a bus driver are both in love with the same woman, an attractive girl named Sarah. The bus driver had to go on a long bustrip that would last a week. Before he left, he gave Sarah seven apples. Why?
Albus-wan
Sep 21 2007, 04:59 PM
Let's attack this logically. Her name's Sarah, right? Sarah means princess. What other princess do we know that was given an apple? Why Snow White, of course! So he gave her 7 apples like the one the witch gave to Snow White so that she would fall into a deep sleep. The doctor, not believing in magic, would spend his time trying to bring her back to consciousness using medicine, which would of course fail. She won't wake up until the bus driver gets back and gives her a kiss and they live happily ever after. Why 7 apples instead of one, you ask? Well her name is Sarah, so being fully aware of the other time a princess was given only one apple, she would be suspicious if he gave her just one, but 7 apples would catch her off guard. No one would bother making 7 magical apples!
Just in case the first answer is off, I've thought of a second answer. The key lies in the interpretation of apple...or should I say, Apple? The bus driver didn't giver her 7 fruits--he actually gave her 7 clones of Gwyneth Paltrow's daughter, Apple! Since Apple is only three, it would look like she was surrounded by 7 dwarves. The doctor, while not believing in magic, would not be ignorant of the meaning of Sarah's name, and upon seeing her surrounded by 7 dwarves would immediately spend all his time following the dwarves around. Why would he follow the dwarves around? Because of their profession! Dwarves spend all day mining jewels and gems, and doctors are greedy. Why else would the become doctors if not because they want to make a lot of money! He'd spend so much time looking for jewels that he would not even notice when the bus driver came back and swept Sarah right off her feet.
But perhaps the girl's name is a red herring. In which case, the first two explanations no longer make sense, so here's one more explanation. The apples he gave her were all products that Apple makes--you know, like an iPod, iPhone, MacBook, iPod Touch, iPod Shuffle, etc. With all those new gadgets to figure out, Sarah would be too busy to do such mundane things as answer the phone or the door, much less go out on a date with the doctor, so she'd still be available by the time the bus driver got back from his trip. She'd answer the door or phone for him--since he gave her the gadgets he should be able to help her use them!
Of course, this riddles probably been around for a while--maybe even longer than all those Apple products--so here's my last possible answer to the riddle. Perhaps the apples are actually Adam's apples and the bus driver gave them to her anonymously. What could poor Sarah assume except that they were from the doctor? He has the easiest access to such things doesn't he? So Sarah would conclude that the doctor was at best quite creepy, and at worst a cold-blooded killer who thought he could win her favor by showing off his "trophies". Surely, she wouldn't let the doctor anywhere near her after that, so he would never be able to convince her that the apples weren't from him? Clear sailing for the bus driver after that!
If it's not one of those, then I don't know what it is and someone else should give it a try.
