We all have seen the Dementors from the Order of the Phoenix movie,
but did you like them? because they are not exactly the same from
Prisoner of Azkaban.
I like the Dementors from PoA more than those from OotP, and what
about you? they are cool, ok, bad or what?

ladybear1515
I don't like either, it seems like they are both flying. Which of course we all know that dementors cant do. In OOTP they say that dementors glid, not fly not float, glide.
Abraxas
I think they look much better in the OotP. Wish you guys wouldn't get so upset about the flying/gliding/floating thing! I don't think it would really work if they didn't fly. Ok I admit they'd look silly if they like floated along, but they've been done fine in the films.
lumoz
I like the flying Dementors! i think they are better flying than gliding, basically is the same, but they can reach more places by flying.

i like the old ones better!
the ootp dementors donīt look like the creatures that JKRowling discribes in the books. in my opinion the thin layer of cloth over their faces made them look way more creepy.
this new ones reminde me of mummies in a bad horror movie.
i donīt see the use of changing the looks of them anyway!
the poa-dementors were closer to the vision i got from reading the books, so iīll stick to them.
El Barto
I agree, I like the ones from Prisoner of Azkaban more. However, if the ones in the 5th film were in the 3rd film and the ones that were in the 3rd film are placed into the 5th film that I'd probably have the same reaction. To me its just continuity, not a matter of what they look like.
( Half-Blood-Prince)
when first reading PoA i pictured the dementors to look kind of like qurriel/voldy when he was sucking blood from the unicorn..but after watchin the film a few time i got used to the look of them...i really dont mind the new dementors
firefly
I really liked the ones in POA. The just seem more creepy to me. But I can't fully say for sure until I actually see OOTP.
UnknownLocket
I too liked the dementors in the prisoner of azkaban better than these ones in the next film. That little piece of clothing covering their heads I think was better than just showing their faces because as described in the books, the dementors had on hoods on. I don't mind that they fly instead of glide, it doesn't really bother me. I just hope that they don't change anything else.
icesk8erqueen8
i liked the prisoner of askaban ones because they looked scarier, the new ones look like anorexic guys with sheets over their heads (no offense to anyone)

so true! but no offense to anyone too...they looked like mummies wrapped in toliet paper actually..the old ones of PoA are better because they have actual black cloaks..and the new ones dont really have a cloak..just toilet paper laugh.gif
to sum it up..i think that they should have sticked to the old dementors because they fit Jk's description from the books more distinctively and accurately than the new ones dry.gif
crookshanks04
i dont really like either of them, but i deffinatly like the ones in PoA better. i get more of a glidding grimreaper sort of vision when it comes to dementors, they should be misty but decrepid
Animagus_Black
I actually think the new dementers are really small compared to the dementers in PoA. You see them in the tunnel coming for harry and they are not as big. The cloaks cover there whole face and the robes or whatever they wear arnt as ragid.

You can see them in a new trailer Here
dancingqueen8282
Eww! The new dementors are strange, uglIER, and more creepy! They look more like a freaky ghost than a dementor... unsure.gif

Oh that is sooo true! biggrin.gif I don't like the way they are now, I like the POA ones. They were scarier, and looked more like how I imagined they would!! tongue.gif But, I can't really talk badly about the ones in OotP.... yet! I will post a more accurate description I have for them after the movie comes out and I see it! happy.gif

I don't think I like the new dementors. In the book, when lupin described the kiss, we know that the dementor will only lower its hood to perform it. The first round of dementors looks best because, even though they don't lower their hoods to do the kiss, the look still comes close. The new dementors don't even appear to have hoods!, so everyone can see whats 'under a dementors hood', without having to be kissed.

As for the flying thing, I don't mind it that much. When I read the book, I was able to picture something quite creapy, however, I don't think it would have been easy to do for a movie, so the flying thing worked for the POA movie.
HP#1_wee_lil'
I way liked the old dementors better. They were a lot scarier and they looked more like the ones I imagined from the books.
But, one thing bothering me, neither of them really have a hood that could be "lowered" yet this is what the Dementors do when they are going to kiss someone. The POA dementors have a hood thats covers their whole face, so the hood would actually have to be removed not lowered. the new ones don't even have a hood, just a load of cloth wrapped around their face. I wish they would stop changing things that don't even need changed anyway.
I always imagined the Dementors a bit like the Grim Reaper and I think the ones in POA looked more like that. The new ones just look like mummies that can fly.
Felipe_Black
I totally agree, that the old dementors were better, more like those in the book. But generally its a continuity thing. I get really annoyed when details are changed for no good reason. In the future I want to be able to sit down and watch all the films back to back, and not be "hacked off" by all the little errors......... I hope I wont be
Padfoot123
Personally, I also liked the "old" dementors better... I thought the HP5 dementors too creepy. Also, they didn't have cloaks!! Well.. not long flowing ones anyway. Grr! They were too unlike those in the books.
Spork2
No, I prefer the old dementors. The new ones weren't as scary. The new ones probably would have been as creepy as the older ones, but I think the reason being was the lack of build up. In the other movies there was always this big build up for the dementors...Like slowly moving and you know it was coming and they would drag it out a bit and then it would be like bam. I just don't think the build-up wasn't done up enough to take the effect.

But yeah, they didn't really have cloaks...So it was..I don't know they just weren't scary. The 'formless' first type were better in my opinion. I think maybe because it left a lot to the imagination still. Made you wonder what was under that hood and these...Didn't have that effect.

People are more afraid of what they can't see or define and I believe that is why the other ones were creepier, these were just too well defined.
Seriouslysirius
I liked the new ones the best becase to be one when they jumped out stagelingn Harry i jumped outof my seat and two it shows how much a grip Voldemort hads over them. They are changeing so much it's like Voldemort is inventiing new types of them. It's a powerful effect. I like them both but i prefer the new ones just slightly.
Voyager
I preferred the ones in PoA, but I still liked the ones in this film. I don't think there was anything wrong with changing their look slightly.
c_collins_09
i definately think that the ones in PoA were much better. they were closer to the book which is how we or at least i pictured them before the movies. the ones in OotP didn't have hoods or anything, just a head with only a mouth. i think the way jkr wrote it is much more scary because u don't know what exactly is under the hood and it adds more mystique.
David
I hated them. Thats one of the reason I didn't like the movie. Dementors don't have heads! They have lips. The flying part didn't bother me as much though.

Whoa thats one scary picture!

I perfered the OoTP dementors..they looked more evil being thinner and carrying less baggage like the big cloaks..although they wernt as described in the books
Ladie Lily Potter
I prefer the old ones but honestly, I don't think it matters all that much. It's just one of those little things that people become obsessed about. The old ones were cooler for me but I'm not going to make a big fuss about it or anything because I really don't care.
Layla
I liked the old ones. But actually, I never really liked how the dementors acted in any of the movies. Lupin said that they only suck out your soul as it's last and worst weapon...but in the movies...that seemed like the only thing they did. I also thought that they would have to be provoked. But, it doesn't matter too much.

The new ones seemed a bit too skelital. I think I spelled that wrong.

-Layla-
Lauren0891
I really don't like these new dementors! I know that they didn't really have a big part in the film, but I much prefer the old ones in PoA. Like it says in the book they glide not fly. When I was reading the books I pictured the dementors like they were in PoA, not like these new ones.
ILoveHarryPotter07
Well, glad I'm not the only one who realized that there were new dementors. tongue.gif
I really liked them, in my opinion they looked loads better. I really thought that they were scarier than the ones in PoA, which was was cooler. I also think that the way that they attacked made it look like they were sent there on someones orders.
hermione rox
I like the ones from Prisoner of Azkaban better, they seem more much more like the dementors JKR described in the books. The new ones look like they really aren't wearing the big black cloaks.. to me they look more ghostly and grey. Which realllly creeps me out!
They look like something from a bad "horror" movie like the Mummy. They just do not look like dementors to me.. If you look closely, you can kind of see it looks as though the new ones have eye bone type things.. dementors don't have that. They just have the giant hole as a mouth. Yes it's true it looks like someone sent them opposed to the ones that attacked in PoA (well... that's the huge difference with these ones)
They looked like they were on a mission of some sort.
But I still don't like how creepy and ghostlike they are.
They look like they're meant to scare children.
I'm a teen that loves horror movies, those dementors scared the pants off of me! (not literally)
About the gliding thing, I think in PoA they looked fine when they just flew at Harry, gave you a more.. they're going to kiss him aren't they? kind of feel.
I think if they slowly glided, it wouldn't be so suspensful and a bit lame.. it's like move faster you stupid hooded creature!!!
So basically, I reallly don't like the new ones. They don't look like something from Harry Potter.
and Seriouslysirius:
I don't think you can invent new types of dementors. Even if you're Voldemort.
Antonio
The new dementoids? Er- I mean Dementors? I kind of liked the PoA better, because they have that mysterious, hooded, evil, scary, erie, feeling to them. Unlike the new one, they were skeletal, and their "scaryness" was all out, I would have preffered a subtle type of fear to them.

But out of the ordinary, the Ring Wraiths from Lord of the Rings would have been better Dementors, they have those scary, dark hoods, that really personify the word FEAR shutup.gif!

hermione rox
Yeah see, and they were not anorexic looking!!! The new ones look like freaking solid ghosts.
I think for me, the old ones were slight creepier for the sense of wondering what was underneath the cloak, the floating black space that wrapped around them.
As for the gliding issue.
Remember back in PoA (the movie), when it shows them outside of Hogwarts floating around and the flowers turn icy? To me, they looked like they were actually gliding then.
I think when they attack, it's more of a chasing after you flying sort of thing, since if they were gliding like they do when they're not trying to kiss somebody, they would be extremely slow and would hardly be able to catch the person.
aleja23
No I like better the Prisoner of Azkaban dementors, they were more similar to the ones I once imagined, and I like them better hooded and with this kind of black cloack, they were more scary to me the PofA ones.
Drinotonks
Hmm well to sit on the fence, I like a combination, I preferred the more 'cloaky' look from the third but I found these new ones utterly terrifying in their movements like you didnt know what they were going to do next, because they moved a little faster, you were unsure of their next action whereas the other ones, on account of their slow movements you could prepare yourself for what was coming! In OOTP they just pounced on them it was scary I thought these one's looked a little more solid, whereas I picture them to be more ghostlike, than humans which are deformed.

I thought that the underpass scene when they're getting Dudley, if you look at Harry in the background it looks horrible when it holds him up against the walls, made me shrink with discomfort in my seat!
DoubleD
I liked the "old" dementy-things more, I think they were more scary. And they have this final gesture, the taking down their hoods before kissing someone, the new dementors couldn't do that...
etphonehome
I preferred the 'old' dementors. They had much more in common with JK's original cloaky description. In PA they sort of reminded me of the Grim reaper drawings I have seen and that is very much how I imagined them when I first read about them.

The new ones were a bit like sack cloth, it looked as though they had been made from old patato sacks...rubbish.
pureblood_narcissa
the old dementors are terrifying...
the new ones kinda look too solid[?] if you know what I mean!?

The new Dementors don't do the book justice. I mean, what's the point in making the Dementors different from the way they made it before? PoA (Movie) was way closer to the discription of Dementors in the book than in OotP (Movie)!

To answer my question above, there is no point. The book described Dementors as: "a cloaked figure that towered to the ceiling. Its face was completely hidden beneath its hood. Its hand as it protruded from the cloak was glistening, greyish, slimy-looking and scabbed, like something dead had decayed in water." It does not say that the head is always exposed, like in the second picture in the very first post. Good job getting those by the way, they're great.

Anyway, what I'm saying is that I think I like the old Dementors better. And I'm really mad because they changed the Dementors' look. No longer are the movies acceptable. The effects and drama and overall - well, everything - has been torn apart. The only acceptable movies are HPatPS, HPatCoS, and HPatPoA. (The first three)

Okay, I swear this is the summary: All of the newer movies aren't very good, in my opinion. Of course, that's my opinion. You can have yours, but I'm sticking to mine. sleep.gif

*Priori Incantatem*
cool picture by the way but is it just me or does anyone else find the ootp dementor in that picture hilarious! lol its eyes look funny not scary!

maybe its just me... but yea i prefer the POA ones, they look more how i imagined them to look and i hated the fact that in the new film the dementos actually grab harry by the neck - why?! they dont go around doing that!
oh yea and i agree with what people said, they look a bit too solid-y in ootp and thers not enough 'gliding' going on tongue.gif
Drinotonks
I'm with you *Priori Incantatem* I wasn't too sure why they grabbed Harry around the neck, that was a little odd. They were still scary I thought but not true to the book description. I really liked the cloaked floaty look of the ones in the third, probably because I watched all of the making of features on them deciding how best to represent their persona, the cloaks moving underwater was the best but a little hard to do in the movie. I just don't understand how people ie directors can make such dramatic changes to the appearance of characters or locations, for people who haven't read the books you could think they're a different strand of demenors.

Also you can make out more of their face, hallf the terror of the old ones were their faces were more cloaked rather than covered in fabric so you didnt know where they were looking, its the unknown we fear, but the new ones almost had expression does that make sense?
2loveandhate2lose
I like the dementors from the PoA better because I imagined them to look like the PoA movie. Hooded. I agree that the ones from OotP look more solid ghosty. Why are they flying? In OotP the dementors look scabby but arent there hands supposed to look scabby. Werid. They are more scary in OotP but they suck the happiness from a person there really not supposed to be that scary are they?
Ginny Weasley Potter
I didn't like the dementors in this movie. They didn't look anything like they were supposed to; they were just more like strange, skeletal beings with practically skintight black clothes. Especially their faces/heads - at the risk of sounding redundant, you got a look at their faces and they were just SKELETAL. It was just weird. They looked so much better in PoA, not to mention their appearances were faithful to the books, what with their long, flowing robes and big hoods shielding their faces completely, and their sleeves were billowy, so then all you could see was their hands, and even that was all the time...wasn't Harry questioning their sudden change in appearance? XD

I also agree with others about the whole 'grabbing Harry by the neck,' and also on their 'solidity' and more...well...what would be the appropriate word? Groundedness? Well, they weren't as floaty. So, yeah. To further explain the three points in this paragraph I'm writing right now -

(1) No grabby. They're more "we'll float past you and suck out your soul in the process." Not so physical. I cannot see them actually doing that - except I did in the movie. O_O
(2) Not so thick, solid. They're supposed to be more wispy and ghost-like.
(3) Not so "down-to-earth," so to speak. More glidey-floaty-flying.

And I already mentioned the other physical aspects in the first paragraph.

In short...

3rd movie Dementors: Good.
5th movie Dementors: Bad.
3rd movie Dementors: Stuck to the book's description. Fit perfectly on everything from appearance to movements and characteristics.
5th movie Dementors: Screwy. Everything the 3rd movie and book Dementors weren't. Just totally inaccurate. Didn't match up at all.

Drinotonks
Hmm yes as I've said I do like the representation in POA better, however, I was reading OOTP today and whilst we think its odd that in the movie they grab Harry by the neck in actualy fact in the book the one attacking Dudley physically grabs him by the wrist and tries to remove his hands from his mouth so he can kiss him so they are actually physical to get what they want, but because in POA they never actually touched anyone that might be where the perception came from? Sure their appearance was more accurate in POA but there actions towards humans seems to actually be almost correct in this film?

What do you think?
professor_mcgonagall
i honestly prefer the old dementors, but i guess they were trying to show that the dementors had "changed" or something... oh well...
zack tonks
it semm they took off their cloth so there in a small differance in the two but i like the thind movies demetors better
ella_L
I think the ones from POA were much better. they looked so scary and haunting. I think the under water puppetry that inspired them really works for these characters. The new ones seem cheap looking compared to the old ones.
Battlefield2142
i don't care if they fly, glide, float or use a jetpack to get around i think these from OoTP look sweet! i don't care what they do as long as they look good and scary.
utvolsfan15
didnt like the new technology in the film. they should have kept it like the old movies. when i watched it, it didnt seem like a harry potter movie because of the new tech and special effects. it looked too modern. it didnt look like the old ones at all which was a dissapointment

i completely agree
HermioneClone
I preferred the ones from PoA. They are much more how I picture a dementor. The ones in OotP didn't even have hoods; they were like totally different reptilian creatures.
MoonLight
I think the new ones are a bit too skinny. But I don't think there're a lot of other things different.
