Anyone else find that clown more scary than the snake? I just watch the dvd (yet again) and it really bothers me how creepy it is. I'm fine with the spider, snake, even the dementor doesn't make me flinch. *shudders* That clown is evil.
Oh on that note, I want it as a background to try and get over my phobia, does anyone have a 1280 x 1024 size version?

yeah, I totally agree with you about the clown. When we saw the movie on IMAX, which is an extra large screen, kids screamed when they saw the clown, or I guess it was a jack in the box styled to look like a clown.

You know, the first time around I watched PoA (and only watched it once before I bought this wonderful, fascinating, hard-to-believe-price DVD!!!

), I didn't really realise that clown. But I know there's a clown somewhere....
And then, later on I saw people creating avatar from the clown and I seriously had thought 'Who's boggart is this?' It didn't occured to me that the snake
was the boggart and the clown was
supposed to be funny!!

Well dazzo, can't you just right click and select "save as background" or something? Then, in the display properties, you can change it to multiple tiles, a center picture, or a stretched out version of the picture that covers your whole desktop.
It was Parvati Patil's fear (the Arabic one, not exactly ugly

). Really, how is a clown in a jack-in-the-box
funny?! Clowns are creepy people. . .

It took me a while to realize that as well! Oy. Children have such strange sense of humor. Clowns aren't so pleasant-looking. I don't know, maybe it's because we all know about Chuckie? (Is he a clown-dummy, or just a dummy. . .?)

Yes, it was Parvatil's boggart. Only realise it last night, when I was watching the movie!!

Ooooo....Chuckie creep me out!! And 10 times fold!! I dunno...but I think he's more a dummy than clown anyway...but this one movie that makes me go all twitchy around clowns....
'It' by Stephen King!! Nasty clown in that one...

Yeah, I know how to change my background. actually, I was looking for like a full screen (full screen dvd printscreen to be more specific) version of the pic, something with a very high detail level.
But thanks to everyone agreeing with me that clowns are creepy. :-)

Lol, sorry dazzo, I guess I misunderstood. You never know: some people really don't know how to do that. Did you "Google" it?
Oh yeah! That was the clown, Zyra, that everyone was scared of. It was from "It"! But I've never really watched it. . .
I think in an interview on the DVD, they were describing dementors and other scary things, and in the middle, they show a collection of shots from the movies - one being the picture of the clown.

AH!!! How did they think the clown was less scary than the snake?!?! Honestly! Steven King's "It" is a very scary movie and it has traumatized it seems the entire population. Myself included. I don't mind clowns in person so much as movie clowns b/c they always seem to be bad. (maybe it's the whole "you-have-no-idea-of-my-real-expression-which-is-undoubtedly-
evil-because-my-face-has-a-perma-smile-made-of-greasy-paint" thing) Plus it was huge and LUNGING at the students. Yes. LUNGING. CREEPILY. LUNGING. *shivers* hmm. maybe my phobia was bigger than I thought!

Yeah that clown is freaky. It's more scary than the dementors. I think that it was meant to give us a feeling of forboating.

Dec 8 2004, 04:19 PM
Yes, I really thought it was weird for the clown to seems like lunging at the students... no, actually it didn't really lunging at the students really, more like lunging at us , the audience... didn't it?
Funny eh? Why ever so? Do they mean to show that someone else's laughter can be someone else's fear?? Hmm... weird....

The movie "It" is one of my favorite all time movies! I had to beg my parents to get a bigger tv for I could watch my favorites on a big screen.

I have been afraid of clowns since I watched It.

So yeah, I *did* find that clown in the Boggart scene a tad creepy...

Oh god, me too!!! I remember the first time I watched that film...totally creeped me out!! I really hate clowns....always have. Anyone remember that film that Brian Dennehey made about that serial killer who used to dress up a clown? John-Wayne Gacy or something, I think....*shivers*
Whoever thinks that clowns are less scary than a cobra...well, sorry...give me the cobra any day..
I liked that avatar that was floating around a while ago....you know the one that had a picture of the clown that said 'Parvati...what were you thinking?!'....that's kind of my thoughts about it too....

I don't usually think clowns are scary, but that one was definetely possessed...and the kids just laughed at it! Crazy wizard children. I think maybe they put that in the movie as a joke

Aug 11 2005, 05:48 PM
I kinda think they intended it to be creepy... the way it was filmed, sort of 'looming' over the characters, and the scary music... I think it was probably meant to be a sort of reflection of Harry's feelings at the time- because he's next in line, and he knows it's about to become whatever he fears most- so he's already afraid of it.

Wasn't the clown supposed to make you laugh? Well it gave me nightmares! No not really, but it was totally scary! I mean, did you see that things eyes? Not such a pretty sight. A funny thing is, I read an interview with Dan a while ago that said that he's scared of clowns! So I wonder how he reacted to it when he was on set and rehearsing and stuff.

I don't usually think clowns are scary either but that one was just....weird. It was all like.....wOOO! in your face, then it leaned back the it was like WOO! in your face! and the music made it kind of more creepy. Plus jack-in-the-boxes just aren't cool in general. Yeah.

HAHAH! Oh wow, I completely forgot about that scary clown!
Well, I would say that I completely agree with Zyra on page 1....It did not even occur to me that the snake was the boggart and the
clown was the "Riddikulus" funny boggart-transferrer-thing

.
I do not know how somebody can find a clown like that to be
funny....clows are one of those really freaky things that give little kids nightmares

.....but whatever floats your boat I suppose!

I've never liked clowns, though I have no idea why, so I thought I was the only one who found that clown scary!

So glad its not just me. How could anyone find it
funny? It was more likely to be my boggart than any of the other things there! It had such an evil grin on its face, and the way it kinda lurched forward ... shudder

May 25 2006, 09:57 AM
Me too!, it was horrible especially the way it sort of bent down toward pevarti (sp?) -I can't believe that the clown itself wasn't the boggart.
Clowns are terrifying, I hate the miserable crying clowns AND the menacing smile clowns (so I guess all of them

)
I just remembered watching an episode of the simpsoms where homers makes a clown bed for Bart and Bart sits rocking back and forth goig 'can't go to sleep the clown will eat me, can't go to...' - that pretty much sums up how I feel about clowns

When I was little, about 5,the family across the road from me had a ventriloquists(?) dummy that was a clown with ginger hair. One day the daughter who was about 15 at the time , hid around the corner from my house when she knew I was coming home from school. As I approached the house all I could see was this clown with its beady eyes, ginger hair and its mouth opening and closing. I was terrified, I had nowhere to run except into the road and the path of a car. Luckily I only recieved bumps and bruises, but to me, clowns and funny do not go in the same sentence they are menacing and horrible.

Yeah, totally. There's something inherantly sinister about clowns at the best of times and when you know Harry's next in line I think this really helped to set a mood. I think Cuaron did that well throughout the whole film in fact, using the principal that since-everyone's-read-the-book-we-know-what's-coming -but-creating-the-mood-to-give-it-extra-clout. (Also again with the patronus at the end)
The clown still made me soil myself though, obviously.

lol ... i so understand what you mean about the clown being scary!!
i think it was the fact that it was like really close infront of the camera, and that it was in a depressing/dark room!

I really didn't find anything scary. The spider was a bit scary, I guess. The snake wasn't scary. The clown wasn't scary, either. The spider was just a bit too big.

Clowns in general are just plain weird! I was never afraid of them, nor my son. In fact, he practically fell in love with this female circus clown we met when he was little --her name was Shenanigans. lol But I think people have a fear of clowns too! I mean, what was with that clown in Stephen King's
It! *shiver*
The clown in PoA was creepy like that...not just because it was a clown, really, but it was a leering, scary clown! Who knows...maybe those wizard kids are just not like us poor, suseptible muggles!

et--Isn't it strange, the things from childhood that remain? My friend is petrified of frogs because older siblings used to chase her around threatening her with them when she was little. I can see where that clown would really freak you out!

Well, yes. I found the clown turned quite nasty.
It's all Stephen King's fault, people. But there's other horror movies with evil clowns. Wasn't there an evil clown in "Poltergeist" as well? . Maybe they are so scary because "a smile is a scream turned upside-down", to paraphrase Stephen King's "IT".

Yeah, I totally agree about the clown. I love snakes, and would love to have one for a pet, except that I wouldn't be able to handle feeding it (I'm a bit of an animal lover, and couldn't handle feeding mice and rabbits to a snake). But clowns are different. I have always had a huge fear of them. When I was little, my parents took my brother to the circus a few times (He loved the circus), but I would stay with my grandma, because I couldn't stand to watch the clowns. I'm almost 30 now, and still terrified of them, and I don't even know where it comes from, as I don't recall any bad situations involving clowns. Anyway, back on topic - I definitely found the clown to be much scarier than the snake.

I would still prefer that clown to the snake though.

I used to be scared of clowns. I was maybe five years old when I watched Stephen King's IT (of course, I wasn't supposed to...I didn't follow rules). I don't remember the movie anymore, but I know there was a clown that scared me mightily. I understand why a perosn could be afraid of a clown.

That clown was pretty disturbing to look at. Just like the clown in IT. But I think that all clowns in general are pretty scary/disturbing to look at in my opinion. I mean its whole face and the eyes portrayed a murderous look to me in some way. Umbelievably though!

But I thought that the clown was pretty scary looking.

It was really scary because it looked like it was going to grab Harry

You know, clowns are suppose to be funny but there was
nothing funy about
that clown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
