War Ich Du
now i have been thinking about asking this for a while. does anyone think its possible that JK is lying to us about things in book seven. she has stated several times that DD is dead and everyone just automatically assumes that she is telling the truth, but think of it from JK's position. she keeps getting pelted with questions and she has to answer some of them, but if the answer to the question reveals a huge portion of the plot then can JK really tell us the truth. i would not be surprised if JK is lying to us about things she gives as answers. if she were to tell the truth then the plot of the book is revealed and reading the book is not as fun. anyone agree with me???

well War Ich Du i can definatly see where you are coming from and i understan why JKR would do that to us but...

i dont really think that she would do that to us. we are her readers and she cares about us. plus JKR is a very clever lady and i think that her answers are not lies but clever thought out ways to answer our prying questions!!!!!!
Wednesday_Adams
Pretty much what Crookshanks said. J.K. Rowling doesn't... lie... she basically gives us riddles and such to solve. Bad metaphor... I know, it's late.

Anyhow, you have to pay attention to how she states some facts, whether she turns it into a long sentence that seems to be about nothing, or just a short statement such as "Dumbledore is dead." She doesn't want to lift hopes, or dash them either. She wants us to find out when we should and have it be as enjoyable as possible. Yes.

Wow, did that make any sense at all?
Triad
Hey guys, I'm going to move this to the JKR forum as it would be a better fit in there considering it's discussing her.

On topic though, yeah I believe she's lied to keep us talking. But I don't believe she lied about certain deaths. Note though, this is not a debate about whether or not characters are alive or dead or if they'll come back, this is a debate about whether JKR has been misleading us to throw us off what she's up to. So don't go off topic.

I agree with crookshanks on one bit though. Some things she says aren't direct yes or no answers. They are vague answers which keep us guessing. I think it's in these tha she has seen we've hit on a truth, and possibly a lie, and to cover it or to send us in a different direction she might have given us the answer we want to hear. Or the answer she think will better suit her books ending. Does that make sense? I think she'll mislead us so that come the end we'll all be like, 'Ahhh, so Sirius didn't die behind the veil since he came back in so and so chapter.' You know?
gaburdette
I have long believed she was capable of telling a white lie if it was needed to protect a plot twist from being revealed. Say she was asked about Harry being the Heir of Gryffindor and she answered yes or she would rather not say at that moment. That would be a good indication he was the Heir and ruin a big secret in the last book. By hesitating and then saying no, she has preserved the plot and done something I am sure her fans would forgive her for.

On a tangent, that is exactly how I took her interview where she supposedly shot down the Heir theory. I read it as her being evasive and not really expecting or wanting to answer that question. I am probably being foolishly hopeful here so I will probably be proved to be wrong when the book comes out next month.

So yeah I think she is capable of misleading her fans to keeps the series secrets until she is ready to reveal them to us.
crookshanks04
well i guess after carefull consideration i agree with gaburdette and Triad!!!

JKr could very well be telling us little white "lies" if you want to call them that!!!

but only to protect the books and our reading enjoyment!!!

Let's think about this Jo telling a LIE? She is the the idle of millions of CHILDREN I doubt she would out right lie for any reason what so evershe may dance around the truth a bit but she won't lie it would be to detrimental to her if she did even if it is her last book in this series

Now the real question that got this started was is she Lying about DD being dead no. She clearly said the DD will not pull a Gandolf which we know to be he won't be reborn now she she never said he did'nt pull a Machiavelli who was believed to have faked his death. Now when she say Dumbledore we all assume that Jo means Albus even though she doesn't say Albus she only says Dumbledore if Albus and Aberforth switch places using say polyjuice potion which has already appeared in two of the books and Aberforth was killed she wouldn't be lying by saying "DUMBLEDORE IS DEFFINITELY DEAD" she would only be dancing around the truth by not saying which and I believe that is the only reason she put Aberfortrh in the books we've only heard of him a few times and this way she doesn't introduce "any major characters" because she has said there won't be any new major characters and she can kill Dumbledore WITHOUT LYING

But there is already another thread on this theory I just thought that it deserved mention here since it was brought up at the opening of the thread and it also works into the fact that Jo isn't lying
crookshanks04
well put Luv_n_Hermione that was a good wat to say it all

and i have to agree with you i also do not think that ALBUS is dead, but DUMBLEDOR sure is we know because JKr has told us that very cleverly!!!!

I doubt JKR would intentionally lie or mislead us. She pretty much stated her position about this in an interview. The link is here if you would like to read the interview in its entirety. However, I'll paste just the section concerning her position on lying or misleading for you to read if you don't want to read the whole thing.

ES: Can you give us any clue, without misleading us [Emerson misspoke; he meant "without giving too much away"] --?

JKR: I've never, to my knowledge, lied when posed a question about the books. To my knowledge. You can imagine, I've now been asked hundreds of questions; it's perfectly possible at some point I misspoke or I gave a misleading answer unintentionally, or I may have answered truthfully at the time and then changed my mind in a subsequent book. That makes me cagey about answering some questions in too much detail because I have to have some leeway to get there and do it my way, but never on a major plot point.

So, I don't think JKR would have done anything like that on purpose. I think she has done her best to be as honest as possible, but you can't expect her to answer every question with a straight answer or there wouldn't be any surprises left when the book came out.
Seriouslysirius
Harry Potter is the hugest book series in the world i beleive. So i quess J.k wants to keep it magic for the fans. So no spoilers etc are found.

I quess at times she may just have to say a tiny little white lie to stop fans getting exactly spot on the plot. Though i doubt that is possible.

Though i believe her firmly when she says Dumbledore is dead.

I'm sure we all wish she was lying about Dumbledore, and as she puts it herself she may have made a mistake at some point of time. Still if she's told us categorically that she wont lie then I'm sure she wont lie. Whenever she may have felt that the answer to a question may give away too much of the plot, she's refused to answer that question. So I really dont see any reason for her to have lied to us at any point
Momentum
If she is lying about the questions people ask her, I wouldn't mind. I personally don't read interviews and stuff where she might possibly talk about DH. Why would you want to spoil anything by accidentally reading a detail that you didn't want to? I'd lie too, if I were her. Also, she kind of has the right to, because it's possible that she could change it. You never know.
PottyHead
I think that she would have to lie about some tihngs. I mean for example if DD wasn't dead...that would be such a give away, and people would start asking a lot more questions like 'How isn't he did' 'How does he return' and things like that so it also makes it easier for her to keep the secrets to herself until we find out for ourselves.

Also, if she is lying to us then I like it, its a lot more exciting to read it and find unexpected things in the book than to find out that you already know most of what is about to happen.

I think that it is possible that JK would lie to us, but it's not that likely. I mean, she's probably smart enough not to plant a huge lie in our heads, just to have us figure out that it was fake, and get all mad at her. It would probably hurt her popularity a lot if she lied to us.
Dumbledore's Widow
This topic was appropriately asked back in 2007 BEFORE book 7 was published. But, I'll throw in my two cents worth anyway. tongue.gif

I don't think Rowling deliberately LIED, she might have stretched the truth so that she would not give away some things from the final book prior to it being released.

I remember once in some interview a little girl asked her whether or not Harry and Hermione would be getting together. Rowling tapped the book on her lap, which was HBP, and told the little girl that "half of her answer was in this book and the other half was in the final book". Totally confused the little girl, but Rowling didn't give anything away. Those who like the R/Hr and H/G ships assumed what turned out to be correct. Those of us who favored H/Hr interpreted it differently, and incorrectly as it turned out. rolleyes.gif But she didn't lie.

harryjpotter
I always loved reading her FAQs and from that I deduce that she only her told us a little white lie about onoe thing - that Harry was a Horcrux. There is one point where she totally refutes the claim but in DH Dumbledore tells Harry at King's Cross that he IS the final horcrux. Or has someone confunded me?
