To answer Vemon's question, I think it was a mix of bad timing and insecurity. I think that Hermione figured her feelings for Ron in third year, so she knew by the Yule Ball that she wanted Ron to ask her, but didn't think he'd return her feelings, so excepted Victor's invitation. Ron had feelings for her, but didn't know/was to happy denying them. But at the Yule Ball he was forced to admit to himself that he wished he was the one dancing with her. Bad timing.
After that, even though both knew their feeling they weren't ready to see if the other would return them, insecurity. Than 5th year came around, they were able to get along well, cleaning, trying to hear what the Order was up to, and worrying about Harry at Grimauld Place at the start. And then they went back to school that had a full stock of stresses, OWLs, Prefect duties, Umbridge, Voldemort, CAPSLOCK! Harry, and Keeping goals on Ron's side. Not exactly a conducive environment to build a relationship, Bad timing. Hermione showed signs of being frustrated at Ron's lack of action to do something, but she failed to act as well, save for kissing him on the check.
I think that at the battle in the DoM, Hermione figured that they could die whenever, she loves Ron, and life's to short. That's why she was going to ask him to Slughorn's party. Which they were going to go to together, but... Ron found out Hermione did kiss Krum, and really didn't wait around for him, like Ron may have done for her. I'm sure Lavender wasn't the first girl to eye him. And another attack of bad timing! We know what happened then. At the end of HBP, I think Ron knew he loved Hermione, and knew she had feelings for him, and Hermione knew his feelings, so they reached an unspoken agreement not to be with anyone else.

The holding pattern of DH was caused by half insecurity, half wanting to focus on looking for the Horcruxs. Till Ron said what he said, and Hermione knew there was nothing to gain by not being with Ron, so she kissed him.
That's how I see it.
I agree with MissRandom and cristi, that whoever is directing, Steven Kloves, Rupert, and/or David Heyman will come up with something before the moment. And I can see Daniel saying something very like that as well.
Moon, thank you, I was kidding with that before, you know.
cristi, the way you described it, it sounds really funny.
