Full Version: Why Wasn't Veritaserum Used?

I've been puzzled about this for a while: In the first war, why wasn't veritaserum used on suspect Death Eaters? Mad-Eye Moody said: "Scores of witches and wizards have claimed that they only did You-Know-Who's bidding under the influence of the Imperious curse ... how do we sort out the liars?". Well, veritaserum is an antidote to lying, so why wasn't it used? Surely desperate times would have called for desperate measures. Any answers anybody? blink.gif

thats a realy interesting suggestion. and i wouldnt have a clue why not only that it may be really rare.... or jk just didnt think of it...

This was answered in HBP by Dumbledore when Harry asked why he didn't use it on Slughorn to retrieve the memory. Although I can't quote DD said that wizards can take a potion to block the effects of veritaserum. Highly accomplished oclumens can also.

Along with what David said, I think Dumbledore or Rowling said that if you know that you're going to be administered veritaserum, you will have the will power to stop yourself from revealing the truth. I think this was posted on Rowling's site but I can't find it at the moment

EDIT:

Found it

QUOTE
Veritaserum works best upon the unsuspecting, the vulnerable and those insufficiently skilled (in one way or another) to protect themselves against it. Barty Crouch had been attacked before the potion was given to him and was still very groggy, otherwise he could have employed a range of measures against the Potion - he might have sealed his own throat and faked a declaration of innocence, transformed the Potion into something else before it touched his lips, or employed Occlumency against its effects. In other words, just like every other kind of magic within the books, Veritaserum is not infallible. As some wizards can prevent themselves being affected, and others cannot, it is an unfair and unreliable tool to use at a trial.

Sirius might have volunteered to take the potion had he been given the chance, but he was never offered it. Mr. Crouch senior, power mad and increasingly unjust in the way he was treating suspects, threw him into Azkaban on the (admittedly rather convincing) testimony of many eyewitnesses. The sad fact is that even if Sirius had told the truth under the influence of the Potion, Mr. Crouch could still have insisted that he was using trickery to render himself immune to it.

Ok thanks guys smile.gif . You're right, a captured Death Eater would probably assume that they would be given truth potion, and take measures against it. I forgot that bit in HBP, and I'd never seen that bit that JKR said about it.

True! Veritaserum probably doesn't work 100% of the time against certain wizards who are magically skilled enough to defend themselves. It's just a hit-and-miss kind of thing I guess.

Well I am glad that is cleared up. I have been thinking about that alot the last few days, and I was going to create a topic and ask, and while I was searching the forums I saw this. I am really glad that this is cleared up. It had buugged me alot, and I always thot it was a mojor whole in the books. Thank you for "showing me the light" I can now sleep easier...Haha
After the Burial
I think the better question is why don't they employ a fool-proof method of interrogation?

Have the person make an unbreakable vow. If you make an unbreakable vow to tell the complete truth for the next 10 minutes (or as long as the interrogation lasts), would you lie? Anyone who did would receive instant punishment.

i remember reading jkr's answer somewhere...
something like veritaserum works best if the person isn't suspecting...it they know it's coming then they can like transfigure it or block their throats or what not...and i belive voldy would be a tad suspisious if the ministry offered him a drink during a court case.

and maybe it just isn't stroung enough, the curse would over power it
