The movie is great!!!!!!!!I loved it!!!!!! They left out a lot of things I think they should have added. If anyone wants to talk about the movie you can PM me.
Hermione_18
I just saw Harry Potter and the OOTP,and it was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good, I mean it was very compressed and they cut out way to many parts, but for the scenes that they did include, they were fantastic:D:D:D:D I do wish that they had put Quidditch and the House elves in the kitchen, with winky, who they cut out in the fourth movie too. I alsofound that the fight at the Department of Mysteries should have been longer, plus the talk that harry and dumbledore has at the end,but they're talk was only a minute long, he didnt tell harry anything...so that part strongly annoyed me, but the movie was very good considering how much they had to compress into two hours and twenty minutes!!!!

Who has seen the movie?????What did you think about it????
RAB
I have to agree with many here, Luna Rocked the movie. I think if they did not have Luna this movie would have really been boring. I loved how Jenny showed so much power, and a bit of jealousy.

I loved the graphics of the magic. Though seeing more than one class would have been nice.

I thought half way through the movie that Gambon finally played a good Dumbledore, then I realized I had barely seen him. The "don't you have studying to do" crack was a bit out of character, he seemed angry at Daloris. He only was angry with her one time when she tired to shake a student. Anyway, the only part I think he did really well was protecting Harry, I actually felt he was doing some acting there, because I believed he wanted to protect him. The rest of the movie was basic Gambon... The moody old man playing a wizard...

I loved how Harry said concentration is how long you keep the Patronus, and Luna kept hers up for a long time. It just struck me as being "Cool!"

I have some complaints about the movie, I did not leave the movie saying 'wow'. I did not even clap. I always clap when I see a great movie. But then again I did not feel ripped off either. I will buy the DVD when it comes out, but I will not go see it again. Usually a great movie, I go see again at least one time.

People mention the number of people who go see the movie with out reading the book.... So only one, Gambon... /giggle.

I just have to say, they need to give Luna a raise, she stole the show in my mind!
RAB

If I had to rate this movie I would give it an 8 out of ten, because of the CG and Luna!
laughingirl_92
I saw the movie earlier today and it was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do agree with you Hermione_18 the conversation between Harry and Dumbledore should have lasted longer.I didn't like that they cut the part where Ron and Hermione become prefects because I think they should show that everyone is growing there at Hogwarts.I felt so bad for Ginny because when hermione said,"Cho couldn't take her eyes off of you." She looked so disappointed.I was kind of mad because she didn't have a boyfriend.Yeah the fight at the ministry should have lasted longer. The movie was GREATTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In my opinion those few bars of Hedwig's theme for the score is like chocolate syrup, if you have to much of it all you have is a brown mess, which is why I really don't like the score for PS. But I loved the score for OotP, and the bars where there for the most important scenes like when Harry picked up that ball, and you could hear it, I got goose bumps. I'm not sure if I like it more than GoF's score, which was my favorite though.
What did I think of OotP? I love it, loved it, and loved it. It moved quickly but it didn't feel as choppy to me as GoF's editing, no where near as fluid as PoA, true, but it felt like "a place for everything, and everything in its place." Why I think it's now my favorite is that we now have a director that gets it. Especially the trio! Ron has been so played down, but here we see what he really is, the heart part of the group who can't sleep because Harry can't. And I awwed when Harry said sarcastically "thanks Ron" and Ron replied "only for you mate". Hermione's support-o-girl, brainy, and it no longer feels like she's imposing on Ron's character like in PoA. Ron and Hermione have wonderful verbal copulation, which made this shipper very happy.
Evanna really is amazing isn't she? I think she was brilliant made me think "I love Luna" on more than one occasion, which is something for me because I didn't like Luna much at first.
I thought Helena Bohna Carter was really good for the little amount of time she was given, I think that she was in danger of coming off as cartoonish or simply being unthreatening, but she was kind of perfect.
Micheal Gambon seems to be “getting it” much better as well, much more the calmer Dumbledore from the book’s but with a bit of endearing bite.
I cried through the whole thing! No less than 15 times! Dan is better than he's ever been, Rupert finally is given room to breath as Ron, and Emma is as great as always.
Also, something that has not much to do with anything...who else thought Chris, Percy, looked totally hot in those suits! I guess that was my only problem with this movie was they didn't explain Percy. I smell a deleted scene verse there being no mention in the script in the first place.
I have one thing to say about what was cut and how things are different then the books. If you go into the movies expecting them to be the book then you'll be terribly disappointed! Of course the movies won't be as good as the book, that’s just the way it is. You need to see the movies as the movies and the books as the books. It's the way it is.
Corpus_Agnelli
I'll add another voice to the disappointed minority. Like what others have mentioned, things jump around and there were some missing scenes which, granted, required cutting for time but took away from the overall plot.

But that's necessary for movies. I get that. I can move on.

What I was most disappointed in (before I get to the really spectacular parts) were the sub-standard visual elements that Warner Brothers or David Yates held back on. I had a hard time reconciling myself as to whether the movie catered more to the reader audience or simply the movie goers, and I feel that it's attempting to win over the reader. Why? In terms of FX innovation, there were none. The CG elements were basic, such as the fireworks and the flaming dragons and the little After Effects sparklers that popped up around the movie. I'm comparing the standards based on the progressive nature of the previous movies, and must say this is not just a stall, but a step back...quite a huge step back. In the 4th movie, it was odd that the the fireplace scene was rendered with Sirius in the embers, and while the readership may complain, I eventually thought it was quite innovative in the translation and application of the scene. The fireplace scene in this movie seem like a simple overlay of Sirius and stock flame imagery. These are a few among other visuals that I thought was a waste of the budget they must have had. Or, they're really trying to be more conservative with it. Which begs the question: why would they, especially since the Harry Potter world is magical... I don't discount the ending battle, which was exciting...but in terms of visuals and execution...well, it felt like it was done. There's nothing wrong with that, but I expected further momentum in keeping with the prior movies. And what was with the Priory Incantatem liquid effect? Inconsistency...

This is all from a designer's point of view, of course, and I'm aware that the targeted masses will view this very differently.

And as lilyluvr pointed out, I thought the score was lacking that connection to the previous movies. Yes, we know this is a different movie and the kids a growing up, but it seems they're trying to cut off consistency in favor of...well, I don't know...

...when I first saw stills of Imelda Staunton as Umbridge, I thought it was a poor choice...

...and then I saw the movie and cannot believe how well she carried the film. I am most thoroughly impressed by her portrayal as the antagonist of the film. Never mind Voldemort, the real threat (at least evocatively) was her, and she owned it! Every time she was on screen, it was so powerful that it made up for the lacking in-betweens. Pity the other older actors didn't have much of a role. It's seems like such a waste. I'd rather the budget have gone to creating a better visual world than pay actors to appear for 2 minutes. Yeah, I'll buy the DVD to complete my collection, but I won't be racing the next person to see this movie again in theaters.

...oh, and Ginny. That was quite a surprise. Those scenes were well done and to establish what will come in the next book. Well done.
ILoveHarryPotter07
I liked it but at the same time there were alot of things I think that could have been better. I think that David Yates said that he wanted the emotion to be clear. While I think we realize he is feeling angst. If Yates wanted to make us feel his emotions Harry should have screamed, he should have broke DD's stuff and cried, and flipped out. I think that the emotion of that would have made things better. I liked the quicker scene cuts, but I thought that the movie itself felt too rushed. Also I think that it seemed a bit out of chronological order. I would also have liked to see a fuller 'pensive' scene, as it wasn't in the pensive in the movie, I think it should have been more detailed. I loved Fred and George though, and I thought that all the actors did an amazing job!
Amyrat151
I liked the visual effects, I agree not as beautiful as the ones in GoF, but you have to look at the source matrile. GoF is more of a blockbuster friendly book, with the Tasks and all, OotP is much more emotional story.
But for me, personally, when I think about movies I love amazing visal effect is not the one of the first 5 thoughts that pops in my head about why I love it. As Gore Vebinski says, CGI is not a verb, meaning "we can just CGI that." Good effect don't make good movies, cause it point the Matrix Reloaded, nuff said.

This review will be choppy and perhaps a bit disjointed, so bear with me if you wish. If not. . .skip it! I don't mind.

This is the movie we've been waiting for since SS and PoA, oh, and okay. . .CoS. Though it is far from perfect (what book based movie can boast perfection?), this movie really got back into the spirit of things instead of just hurrying it along and making it dark for the sake of being dark.

Regrettably, I went to see it in IMAX 3D. Not because it wasn't good in 3D, I'm sure it was wonderful. It's just that my eyes cannot see it. It gave me a blinding headache by the time the red glasses flashed at the bottom of the screen indicating it was time to remove them. I wish I could see 3D because it surely would have been magnificent. Ah well. The two friends that I went with were wanting the 3D experience, and as I'm sacrificial that way. . . I went too. Heh.

After my first viewing (and it will need seen at least a couple more times. . .) here are the things I liked and didn't :

» Click to Show Spoiler - Click Again to Hide... «

And, diatribe over.

I heard Hedwig's theme a bit. I'm good with that. I thought the score was impressive, myself.

Amyrat - I'm with you on Percy. Maybe not the hot part, but if you didn't already know he was Percy, you wouldn't have known he was Percy. He could have been some nondescript actor for all the viewers knew.

Also, thought I'd just mention. . . when I go to see the HP movies, I severly lower my expectations from the book. Why? Because I know if I have too much hope in keeping consistent with the book, I will be thouroughly disappointed. I view them as two separate entities, really. The books are wonderful and will always be my first love for HP. The movies, as I see it, are a bonus. If I went in expecting the movie to follow the book verbatim, even knowing it couldn't, I wouldn't have liked it at all. There's lots missing. Is it important for what the movies are trying to tell? Not so much. The movies are focused on a central plot - Harry's growth and (fingers crossed) defeat of Voldemort. The things they choose and do not choose for the movie are chosen or not chosen all as it relates to whittling down the myriad things that Rowling has brilliantly given us in the books to focus only on what brings Harry one step closer to his goal. I think they did well in that regard with this movie.

they did do very well, did'nt they?
although, something about it gave it kind of

a sad-ish air, like they were all ever so slightly

bit choppy, and i think
''snape's worst memory''

Miss lovegood was ExAcTlY as i

Indeed. And yes, too, about Reloaded...no discussion needed.

I still felt that, for the effects they used (and I'm not saying they need to add more here and there and give us a heap of eye candy overload) it could have been done better. Especially with the track record the franchise has given us. It just feels to me they're pulling their punches. They needn't have gone overboard...but, should've given more. (They DO have the budget after all...)
askingforit
I saw it and was so ecstatic, but kinda surprised because there wasn't much of a crowd. I also felt disappointed because of all that was cut/changed. I think that will be the case for us book-lovers. Yeah I loved it but I felt that people who only watch the movies will be a bit confused. They should have put in the Harry/Neville connection. The many rooms of the DoM would make the film cool. But overall I'm pretty happy (the darkness of the film made it absolutely great, that along with the Weasley's escape!).
You know the kiss was more of a make out, that took me by surprise.

I just got back from watching the movie and I'am very very impressed!!! OOTP is my favorite book and it's now also my favorite movie!!! I liked it so much that me and my friend watched it twice today!!!! The begining jumped around too much... but I'm glad they included what they did.... but it should have been longer!!!! I thought Luna was perfect!!!! She is exactly how I imagined her in the book.... Evanna did a wonderful job playing her!!! I think all the actors did very well with this movie... I really liked Ron's character.... and I loved the Ron/Hermione moments in the movie!!! They made me happy!!!! Umbridge was evil... and that's how it should be!!!! She reminded me of an evil marshmellow peep.... I dont know why but that's just what she was to me!!!!! Bellatrix was creepy.... and so perfect... I can honestly say that she scared me do death!!!!! The D.A. scenes were good too!!! I loved how Ginny kept doing that spell (sorry I can't remember what she kept saying) and she would like destroy something and everyone would just look at her like "Ok I don't need to mess with her" It made me laugh!!! I also like Grawp.... and how Ron sorta got jealous and protective when he picked up Hermione!!! I thought Sirius' death could have gone better.... it kinda bugged me that the veil was kinda invisible!!! And it didn't make me cry like I thought it would... so that was a bit disapointing... But the fight scene with Dumbledore and Voldemort was awesome!!!! And I liked the part where Harry was thinking about his parents and Ron and Hermione while he was being possesed..... and I also really liked what he said to Voldemort when he left his body!!! Well I've probably said too much and I'll just stop now because I'll keep rambling.....But overal.... I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!! wub.gif !!!

to be completely serious, i was extremely disappointed with the movie. i know that they couldn't include every detail, but they left out the best parts. usually the movies have some funny parts to it, but they cut out all of the funniest parts out. and i hated that they changed some of the stuff. like dobby told harry about the room of requirement, not neville. and cho didn't tell umbridge about the DA, marietta did. and i mean, how did they come up with having the whole DA in detention with "the quill"? i guess i wish that they could have included more of the little stuff rather than adding stuff that wasn't in the book. sad.gif and the rest of my family doesnt read the books, and they were all confused because they didnt explain anything very well. they didn't explain the prophecy......or the weirdness of luna.....i wish it was better cause it was my absolute favoriet book

sorry if i infuriated anyone. my favorite is still GoF.

I saw the movie at the midnight showing, and I was amazed at how great the film was! Yates did a good job bringing the characters to life and the scenes were almost exactly how I pictured them while reading the books. Of course, they had to change a lot of things and cut some stuff out to make the movie a decent length, but it was still awesome. I was dissappointed at a few parts, but overall this was the best Harry Potter movie yet. happy.gif
LittleRed7771
Well, I went in to the film knowing that it wouldn't be as good as the book. Let's face it, the book is always better (at least in my eyes wink.gif ). So, I wasn't disappointed in the least. I know there are a few areas that if you didn't read the book, you might not understand what was going on.

However, when compared to GoF, I think Yates did a much better job sticking to the book. There were areas that seemed to fly by that weren't touched on long enough to get a proper feel of the situation, especially during the first half of the movie. And of course there were things that were changed around a bit from the books, but I expected that with it being the longest book stuffed into the shortest movie. Overall, though, I think the movie did the book justice.

I also think Gambon did a much better job at portraying DD is this film than in GoF. He almost seemed like his portrayal of DD in PoA, but not completely. I agree with Passerby that his interpretation of DD falls more on the director than Gambon himself. After seeing him as DD in OotP, I lay blame for his GoF on the director. Even so, I think the actor in SS and CoS (can't remember his name at the moment) has done the best job of all filling DD's shoes, but that's just my opinion.

Overall, I can't wait for it to come out on DVD so I can watch it again. biggrin.gif
fjkrs
I just remembered a few things.

tongue.gif

I love how Fred and George helped (Nigel was it?) the crying kid who had just gotten out of Umbridge's detention. That was sweet, and the scene showed perfectly how evil Umbridge really was.

I thought the Ministry of Magic was gorgeous and exactly how I imagined it to be. I was a little fuzzy on some of the things like the fireplaces when I read the book but seeing that scene really put it all together for me.

Also I noticed Sirius looked different in the fire. And Dudley was so obnoxious too. He looked really funny when Harry was holding him up though. I love how the movies create Filch too! He was so funny with his sandwich... haha. I prefer the manon Filch to the canon Filch with his chains and what have you.

Did anyone else notice how random Hermione was to be laughing after explaining Cho's feeling to Ron and Harry? Lol.

Oh and the scene in the department of mysteries was perfect too. Perfect I was soo pleased by that. The older actors in this movie were excellent. I loved Tonks though I didn't think I would.
nevillesgirl
Wow. Some amazing viewpoints for the film. I think I should start off by saying that this is the first film that I actually watched after reading the book so in this respect I was left wanting at the end of the movie. I also found myself saying stuff like "Where's... or That's not how ... was said or done" Overall I loved the movie though. I thought it flowed a lot better then GoF and also stuck pretty true to the book. I can see how they would develop HBP as a continuation of this film. I must say, I had my doubts after GoF.

There are a few moments in the film that I completely loved.

1. Irma Staunton as Umbridge. *hiss* and yes the theatre I was in was very vocal when it came to her portrayal of Professor Jane Umbridge. She was fabulous. I hated her in the book but to see on screen the sadist and girlish evil that was the character was phenomenal. I found myself actually gripping the armchair a couple of times because I just wanted to smack her.

2. What can I say about Snape. I love that man. He needed more screen time "obviously" *he he* but what I did see was perfected. His cynical comic flare was great and at the same time I don't think they lost how nasty he can be. HBP should be interesting.

3. I loved the emotional struggle I saw Dan Radcliffe put into Harry's character. It was such an emotional book and Harry's struggle with his temper and with who he is (is he more like voldemort then he thought) was definately brought to the forefront of the film. I think the betrayal of Cho would have been more convincing if they would have developed the relationship more in the film somehow. And they should have at least kept the 'sneak' part. Oh off topic...this is what I liked. wink.gif

4. I think Michael Gambon found his place finally in the Harry Potter films. This was definately his book for emotion and I thought he did a very good job.

Now for the things that irked me.

1. I found Hagrid and Grawp to be almost not a necessity in this film and almost a waste of time to film

2. I would have liked to see a more hysterical Trelawney when she was sacked and also Hagrids fight and Minervas stunners. Thats just my opinion though

3. This is a big one for me. I felt like Harry's possession was done not the best way. I think that I expected Voldemort to antagonize DD into trying to kill Harry a little more instead of the inner struggle that we saw with Harry.

4. More Snape...enough said!

On a side note, I still missed the Quidditch although I knew it was going to be cut. It is just so fun to watch and lets face it...I think some good developments happen in HBP around Quidditch so it will be interesting to see how they accomplish that.

I also thought that the director did a very good job in bringing out the best in his actors and finding the right angle for a lot of his shots. Well done!
BamaGirl08
It seems a lot of people were disappointed, but I loved it! It's my favorite so far, and I think it had a lot to do with Yates being the director.

I loved how Gambon did a better job as Dumbledore in this one, because in GoF he just did not portray Dumbledore very well. When he is talking to Harry as Voldemort is inside of him, I fell in love with the character all over again.

Yes, a lot of things were different than the book, but it's understandable due to the length of the book. I wish they would have shown Petunia getting the Howler from Dumbledore, because I think that is significant and we're supposed to be finding out more about that, NEXT SATURDAY! smile.gif

I loved how the Black Family Tree was a whole room by itself. It was wonderful, and I might kick myself for saying this, but it was better than a tapestry hanging on the wall. shutup.gif Sorry, Jo!

Even though the Department of Mysteries scene was cut a bit in the beginning (the room of doors, brains, time, etc.), I still loved it. And I love how Lucius drops the prophecy. Even more of a reason for Voldemort to hate him, and a better way to portray that for those who don't read the books.

I know I'm rambling, but I just can't get over how great the movie was! The effects weren't as good as previously they were, but I can live with that. I loved the Ron/Hermione-ness throughout, and how Ginny looks back at Harry as he's lagging back to talk to Cho wub.gif And even though I don't like Cho, I think the kiss was wonderful smile.gif I love how the mistletoe appeared. Like they said, "The Room of Requirement equips you with what you need at the time." biggrin.gif
Nimbus
Almost everyone I've spoken to has said they loved the movie, and I gotta say, I agree! After GoF I really wasn't expecting much from this movie so I really didn't have too high of expectations for it (it also seemed as though they weren't doing as much promotion for it as they have for passed movies). But then earlier today, before I saw the movie, I kept hearing from people that it was "soooo good" and "the best yet" so I got my hopes up and I wasn't dissapointed!

I REALLY liked how past films were incorporated into this one. If there's one thing previous directors have made little to no effort to do, it's provide continuity between the films. Yates does this wonderfully.

The music is also awesome. I had no idea who Hooper was before this movie and really hadn't heard any of his other stuff, so again, I wasn't exactly expecting a lot out of the score, but I thought it was brilliant. He use of leitmotif via "Hedwig's theme" at just the right times was great. And the piece "The Sacking of Trelawney" I thought was amazing-- gave me chills.

I also think this one did an excellent job of not adding things that weren't in the books just for the sake of adding them <cough> 5 minute dragon chase <cough>, and not directly contradicting stuff that's in the books. And the things that were cut really didn't take much, if anything away from the movie.

I could go on and on about other good things, the acting was great, the pacing was good, etc..but I think I'll leave it at that.

I was a bit nervous when I first heard Yates and Hooper were also going to be taking on HBP but now I'm excited and really can't think of anyone better for the job.
Weasley's_Wizarding_Weezes
I don't know what to say exept that I LOVED IT!!!

I thought that Yates is a complete genius and should be given everything in the whole world! The movie was by-far the best and I am SO glad that he is directing HBP! I can't wait to see what he will bring to the table.

As for somethings went a little astray from the book... nobody is perfect and I think that Yates has done the best so far! I am still thinking about the film, I'm s glad I work at a theatre and can watch it any time within the next couple of weeks!!! tongue.gif

I would have to say that my favorite scenes were the Azkaban breakout and the patronus scene! I loved them!

I have to say it once more... I LOVED IT!!!

I thought that Luna pulled off Luna perfectly! I had my doubts for a while, but she exceeded my expectations just like Bellatrix! I didn't know whether they could capture her cruel personality and bitter looks, but they certainly did! Snape, like always was brilliant! And I must say, I have been extremely disappointed with DD in the last two film, but this movie makes it all better biggrin.gif . I did rather expect a little more of Tonks, but oh well.

The prophecy room was, lack of any better word, absolutely amazing! It really captured something that I saw when I read the book, and not many directors can do that!

This movie alsomade up for information not told in the previous films... it told the viewers of Neville's parents for example. And it also brought the house-elf Kreacher in which i did not expect at all! Since they have yet to bring in Dobby in needed areas, I didn't expect to see Kreacher in this movie at all. And now that I am on kreacher, I might as well say that they did a fabulos job with him!

I'll be on tomorrow to talk more about this, but for now... bed. tongue.gif

Moon(I luv you Luna)
Wow.

It was-wow.

Golly freakin' goshly.

It was-wow.

I have to say i wasn't exapting much. I was expecting to come out all "They left out so much! That didn't happen in the book!"

I didn't. I came out going-"Omigod! That was soooo much better than i thought it would!"

David Yates did an excellent job. best director we've had i reakon.

Where on earth to start? Luna was ... perfect. Evanna i love you! I definatly remember why Luna's my favourite character. She had the misty voice, the and i loved how she'd skip off all happily. And her shoes appearing on the ceiling! Ha-that was wonderful, she gets an outstanding.

Bellatrix gets an outstanding too. Along with the Sirius.Harry moments. they were so sweet, i almost cried when they were in the room with the black family tree.

And Tonks rocked. I loved how they made her trip over something. But i wish there was more of her.

I also wished there was mroe Lupin.

The Harry/Cho kiss was ... hmmm ... longer than what i thought. Haha, and i loved Ron's reaction. laugh.gif

I also reakon the Grawp scene rocked. Hermione-"Put me down-now!" and Ron getting all protective-so cool. cool.gif

I remember when Umbridge slapped Harry, everyone in the theatre was all "Oooooo!" It was so funny, but she was the perfect Umbridge-i wanted to strangle her. She also reminded me a lot of my music teacher ... dry.gif

Sirius death was sad, Harry yelling for him. But i really cried when Harry was all likie "I have friendship and love, Voldemort. I feel sorry for you" or something like that. I was just like "Awww!" and my dad was going " huh.gif "

David Yates was the best director-he didn't add in useless stuff and change lines and what not. Awsome. I'm so glad he's doing HBP. I hope he does DH as well.

Fred and George apperating was funny, and I loved how they showed Ginny as powerful.

I also liked the memories. They were done so cool, but i wished there was more marauders! I didn't even see Lilly-i don't think she even spoke! dry.gif

My only let down was no "Weasley is our King". I knew it wasn't in there, but i really wished there was. But overall, i'm glad about the movie, and thought it could have been better, but it was better than GoF. happy.gif

PS. Whoa, i rambled. Sorry if that was a bit long. rolleyes.gif

Ok, I think it's safe to say that those who are commenting in these forums have read the book Order of the Phoenix. That being said, I've heard a lot of people say "if you haven't read the book, you wouldn't understand the movie!"

Well, my sister hasn't read even one of the books, and she understood it just fine. In fact, she offered to come with me to see it again in the theater! (and she is far from being a huge hp fan. She simply has seen, and liked, the other movies)

So, I think it's safe to say that the movie is able to be liked by readers and non-readers alike.

Aubrey, I'm surprised by your reaction. That part made me tear. The silence and Harry's reaction... it was powerful. But I agree, they could have done a little bit more with Sirius's death. His reaction alone was not what I expected.
Maybe I need to see the movie again, but it seemed like Lupin grabbed Harry before he could even begin to start running to Sirius. And I didn't pay attention to Lupin's face I watched Harry's and I think Daniel's acting is generally cheesy, though good enough. And I was still stewing over Bella saying Avada Kedavra and Sirius's crummy death.

I don't think I'm too let down by anything that was completely left out. Dobby was annoying enough in the second movie with all his third-person talking, and Quidditch isn't necessary for the plot. I wish Kreacher would have said something a little more hateful though. I found him sort of funny in the book. Same with Mrs. Black.

And about Hedwig's theme...that's not really a reason to hate the whole movie. I mean, it wasn't in the books or anything. And you can always download it as a ringtone to satisfy your cravings. Kind of like I did... whistling.gif

Man. I can't wait to go back and see it. I need to.

I just returned home from watching the opening night showings of OOTP. As I left the theater (I watched both showings back to back) I sat in my car for a couple of moments and tried to ponder just exactly what I thought of it... brilliant was my main thought, followed by disturbing and lastly unsettling. Now before everyone gets into a lather about this let me say... none of these descriptions are meant negatively. On the contrary, David Yates took me to the next level of what J.K. Rowlings presented to me in her book. In the book I grieved unmercifully for Harry's loss of Sirius and for the injustices that befell him in his fifth year and related completely to him during his moments of constant rage and abandonment. I connected with the characters on a very emotional level while reading OOTP and never in any other book in the series did I laugh and cry so much. However, while watching the film Yates truly slammed me with just exactly what Harry and the rest of Hogwarts and the Order were facing. His brilliance of imagery showing Fudge (don't anyone scream) very much as (please don't scream) **** dictator. I am a history major and I am sorry... I felt like I was sitting in the middle of an oppressed country.. and again this is not negative... I was flabergasted at the similarities and the hopelessness that Harry was constantly hit with. The parallel was truly inspired. Imelda Stanton... who I have always admired... gave an Oscar worthy performance...showing many layers to the "evil" Professor Umbridge. Daniel has always portrayed Harry brilliantly but his final scenes at the Ministry brought me to tears.. his struggle with Voldemort...the eternal battle... there are no words. I only have two criticisms... and my son will tell you I am a broken record but it is true... the movies need to be longer...2 hours and 18 minutes for 870 page book is criminal..though I have to say Yates really hit most the points I thought should be covered from the book but just like Goblet of Fire the scenes were choppy and there was not enough time spent making the scenes as personable as possible. The supporting cast, which lets face it... was every one except Harry... was not given there moments to shine as they did in the book. I am not saying to make Harry Potter into 4 hour movies with an intermission but come on .. if Titanic can do it as well as LOTR... why can't WB... it's not like Harry doesn't deserve it... he has earned it... (Deep Breath and Jumps off of Soap Box). smile.gif

I went to the midnight premier, and OMG! the movie was so fantastic, the whole people were claping and cheering, when the WB logo apears with the Harry Potter's theme, everyone was screaming (including myself).
Well, I really loved, the final battle was so good! also Umbridge, I love her, I mean, I hate her, but I love her performance, it was so good, you really want to kill her, she is such a pain in the a-ss!
The Room of Requirement was cool, and that little moving pictures of the Order, and Cedric aaaaw! tear!
The Department of Mysteries was kind of creepy and dark, awesome!!!
I liked that gigantic fire snake.
Once again I creid with Sirius's death, why? why? also Cedric, why? why him???
I really liked those scenes from past movies, like the Mirror of Erised with Harry's prents, all of young Ron and Hermione, and the graveyard scenes (once again, poor Cedric).
I think it's a good way to keep a bond between all movies, and the story itself.
Pity, they cuted some things, less than I expected, but I would love to see St. Mungo's Hospital.
NanC816
Oh, one thing I did want to mention... this movie is not your typical HP movie... parents need to know this... I sat in a row with a lady who brought three of her children...ages 4, 6, and 10.. and they were fairly shaken up over the final scenes particularly and they did not understand the plot. This is just an FYI... as an adult I thought the movie was great just know that the movies are following the books and they are getting more intense.
Dumbledore'sArmyMan
i thought it was awesome, but the only problem was the amount of stuff they left out.Well,i guess you cant put a 700 odd page book into just 2 and a half hours. The part with Harry being possessed was freaky....looked like something from the exorcist.
Some people were saying in the theatre..."huh..what the hell",but i was just thinking that you might not have got the movie if you hadn't read the book.
But,other then that,it was awesome.
lumoz
As you all know it's imposible to make a movie exactly as the book, so the filmakers must change some things just to make them fit in 2 hours.
So, if you already saw the movie, tell what things were changed.
By changed I don't mean that it was bad, only different

I'm first:

Harry meet Luna in the Hogwarts Express, not the carriage.
Miss Meghan Lou
i thought the movie was really good, considering it was only two hours. what i didnt like is that they cut out some major seens and changed orders of things. what really bothered me was when harry heard the prophice in the department of mysteries, noone else was supposed to here it, and it wasnt the entire prophice that JK had written. BEcause he didnt here it with dumbledorr, he doesnt know that it could have been him or neville, and he doesnt know that someone heard part of the prophice, which harry later finds out in HBP is snape.

i also felt that harry wasnt really angry, he seemed upset, but never really mad, like in the book. harry was supposed to be, in my oppinion, more short tempered and yelling all the time.

my favorite part by far had to be when voldemort possessed harry. i thought it was incredable. it captured exactly what i imagined and i loved it.

all in all it was a great film
Miss Meghan Lou
ok,

1. ron never met grawp in the book.
2.cho didnt leak the DA to umbridge.
hermione/emmafan
Okay, like quite a lot of other people here, i absolutely LOVED the film. As much as we would have loved it to be the same as the book, it can't be so i guess we have to look at it in a totally different way. Anyway...

The parts that i liked where:
1. The flashbacks. When Harry is having lessons with Snape and just generally everytime. I think that it was really well done, and Yates did well to incorporate all movies into these short spaces. But with Snapes worst memory, it could (SHOULD) have been longer and in more detail i think.

2. The connection between Hermione and Ron. Especially when Hermione has been picked up be Grawp. Ron is very protective and it is building very good foundations for movies to come.

3. The scene after Harry and Cho's kiss. That was hilariously done. Their laughs are soo genuine.

4. The scene where Trelawney is being sacked. I wish that Emma Thompson had made it a bit more emotional, but none the less, it was a pretty emotional scene.

5. Fred and George being their usually rather funny (but somewhat annoying) selves. Apparating everywhere and so on.

6. EVANNA!! She was amazing. words cannot describe her performance. I think she grasped the whole idea of a very airy person quite well. *congratulations*

7. Umbridge. yes, i Hate the woman even more than i did when i read the book after watching Imelda Staunton play her. Imelda added a sort of sweetness to the outside and an evilness to the inside that i couldn't picture any other person doing.

8. Ginny and her reducto curse. That showed how strong she was. It will lead up to the next movie quite well. I was worried about this, but David Yates has seemed to work it out.

The parts that i didn't like where:
1. The scene with Harry and Dumbledore at the end. This scene in the book had a lot more emotion and yelling in it. In the movie, there was no smashing of ornaments, or yelling, and the scene just barely went for more than 5 minutes.

2. The scene were sirius dies. Now, this one is a tricky one, I LOVED what they had there, script wise, but, it could have gone on for a bit longer. I very much so loved Lupin holding back Harry in slow motion. made me cry big time. *tear tear*

3. The fact that practically no adult actors were in the film for more than like 10-15 minutes. Well, that may be an exaguration (sp?), but anyways, I felt that there was a certain loss.

4. The family tree. Sorry, but in the book, I felt like you had a much better idea of the whole family and its connnections to other familys (Malfoys, and Weasleys), but in the movie. we only see about 5 different people's names because the tapestry goes around the whole entire room! (Mind you, the scene with Harry and Sirius was very good)

5. The Harry and Cho kiss. That wasn't what i had imagined it to be. And even though I am a Harry/Ginny shipper, I still would have liked this kiss with Cho to have been good. --- Two words = TOO LONG.

Probably more for both cases, but it's late. And i can't remember.

So, yes, It was a very good film, and I am very happy to see Yates move on to the 6th movie, seeing as that one is also a very emotional one.

Cannot wait untill the next movie.
But now all my excited energy must be forwarded onto HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS!!!

hayley.

p.s. Sorry for my ramble. :]

Ok i dont post much on here but i got to see the movie last night! Now i will agree with most of what yall are saying, the book was long and it would have been hard to have put everything in the movie but come on people the scene where Sirius dies was not done well at all! I feel like that is one of the most dramatic scenes in the entire series and it gets what 10 mins of air time! Then at the beginning of the whole movie with the scene where Dudley is attacked by the dementor, by the way one of my favorite scenes in the book again completely cut it to short! They showed only one owl come to the house and the part where Harry is explaining about the dementors to the Dursleys and how Puntuna sorry probably not spelled right, knew all about them should have been in there because i think that it is an important part of the series! anyway My last complaint is with my favorite characters Fred and George i think got a raw deal in this movie!! ok ok i am dont venting, my opinion on the movie is this if you havent read the books then you will love it because it was a good movie but if you know what is suppose to happen and what is suppose to be in it then i think it will leave you dissappointed!!!!!!!1
crawford_todd
How about Harry starts taking occlumency lessons from Snape much earlier in the movie than in the book. He doesn't start until after Christmas in the book - in the movie he starts right after he says Arthur Weasley attacked
fany_monkey
oh gosh i loved it! when you get over the bits that are missing it's a great movie! i mean we can't expect it to be just like the book because well that's not possible but it was a good job! i would have enjoyed to see dobby or the brains, maybe even a bit of quidditch but over all it was good! i will agree that gambon did a much better job this time!
i didn't really like sirius death sceen because i didn't feel it much! when i read the book i'm sobbing but this just made me gloomy! but over all great movie best yet!
lilyluvr
Ahh! I think something's wrong with me! I really didn't like it at all! As you can see in my previous posts, I said how much they left out. I would like to add to that.

For the whole hearing thing, they just showed Mr. Weasley and Harry going to it. They never explained that there would BE hearing. Well, maybe instead of showing the random parts of Argus Filch snoring and eating a sandwich, they could actually put a scene with an owl flying in and explaining that there would be a hearing. It would only be five minutes longer!
And it seemed to me that the whole point of the movie was Harry having weird dreams and Umbridge and her Squad trying to get into the Room of Requirement. Nothing else! So instead of showing so many scenes of that, they could show something else like a date with Cho and Harry, or maybe all of them visitng the hospital to see how Mr. Weasley is. Or maybe the train ride to Hogwarts which they completley ignored! Or even, like a lot of people said, the talk with DD! I was looking forward to that the most! And they also ignored Hermoine and ron becoming prefects! What is this???
In all the other movies, they seemed to cover mostly everything, but sometimes it was a little brief. In this movie, they ignored so much important stuff I wanted to scream! Okay, now im getting a little spastic. *calm down rachel, calm down*
Okay, I'm good.

And was it just me, or did it seem like Harry liked Ginny in the movie and not so much Cho? That's how it felt...

So, as you all can see, I went into that movie with super high hopes, and had them crushed to the ground.

Okay, now I'm getting all...sensitive, so I'm just going to stop typing now wink.gif

This is without a doubt my favorite movie because this is probably the most faithful adaptation to the books yet. Even characters or subplots that weren't explained explicity were alive in spirit, which I loved -- for example, Fred and George's joke shop ambitions, Hermione and Ron's evolving relationship, and Harry starting to view Ginny as more than just Ron's little sister. Characters that I honestly thought were going to be cut, like Percy, were there too, even if they didn't have lines -- their presence made the movie feel the most complete for me. Many of the lines in the film came directly from the book, which was awesome.

He did an excellent job of really highlighting Harry's alienation and anger without going overboard. I could feel the tension and hostility when Harry sees Ron and Hermione for the first time all summer. The actors did an amazing job, especially Evanna Lynch. She did a great job portraying Luna, and I loved how Evanna's voice matched Luna's personality.

Although a few scenes were much too short (i.e. Snape's Worst Memory), I'm glad OOTP was a very fast paced film, since there's not much action until the end, and there's so many subplots and emotional moments that could easily bog the movie down.

I can see why Warner Brothers decided to keep David Yates on for HBP. I think the reason Yates didn't try to explain many of the things going on in the background is that there's an implied expectation that you have previous knowledge of the films. It seems as though Yates made this film not for the general public or critics, but real HP fans, which has made him my favorite director of the series so far.

emmaj21
i was really looking forward to the film
but i didnt enjoy it that much to be honest
firstly i thought emma watson's acting stank, i dont want to be attacked for saying this, but i think shes a terrible actress
daniel radcliffe was ok, but i did cringe a few times at him
the harry and cho kiss...i dont know why there was so much fuss, ive never seen such little chemistry, i felt sorry for them, it was so awkward, and so unbareable to watch
also the film seemed very rushed, everything was very snappy and quick i found
sirius's death was a let down, it wasnt remotely sad, and they really didnt get enough out of that end scene
not only that but i hate the fact that now death eaters can turn into vapour,
moody can block spells by banging a stick, and make the headquarters of the order of the pheonix appear (again by banging a stick) when they are supposed to be secret,
they suddenly stopped deciding that you need words to perform a spell, i know you can do non verbal spells, but in the book they dont, and they should have kept to that in the film, i didnt like that they used no words in any of the spells
also they completely ignored the room of requirement and just made it a room with a magical door that they banged down
also a lot of characters got hardly any screentime

on the uphand some bits were funny and some of it was enjoyable, but i found a lot of weak spots in the film, it wasnt nearly as good as i thought it would be
i do love harry potter, but i still prefer the books to the films i have to say, that was a bit of a let down

i dont want to be attacked for saying all this, it is just my opinion

lilyluvr
i agree with everything you said, it was a total let down
ahorsofadifcolor
I thought this movie was wonderful. I'm pretty sure it's my new favorite but i'm not sure if anything can ever replace PoA as my favorite because of my love for Lupin. But I thought they did a wonderful job. I'm one of those people who go see the movies as a seperate thing from the books, because if I put all my expectations on these films i know i will be dissapointed. And since OotP is my favorite book i lowered my expectations dramatically for this film and was not dissapointed.

Not that there weren't some things that I was bothered by. The lack of Lupin, Snape, and Tonks really irked me, but what little they were there was great. And the death scene...it jsut didn't feel right to me. I thought the lack of sound was weird and didn't like it, though I understand what they were trying to do. But I did think Lupin's look of grief in that scene was spot on and just loved that.

Having said that, I loved Luna and Umbrige. Imelda Staunton played her wonderfully and really made me hate Umbrige which was exactly how i felt when i read the book. And Luna was just how I imagined her!

All in all, i loved the movie, I'd give it an 8 out of 10
sockr24
that was soooo awesome. throughout the whole movie i was just waiting for the battle between DD and Voldy. it was so cool. my cousin was up at MIT when we saw it yesterday so we're going again when she gets back. the part when voldy made the giant fire snake was so cool and then DD just flicked his wand and the thing went flying up and hit the ceiling.

did bellatrix hit sirius with the avada kadavra??? i kind of missed that part a little. i too was a bit upset that lupin wasnt in it a little more. i know that he isnt in the book much either because he's with the werewolves but he said tose like 5 words and then was gone.

Michael Gambon was so much better this movie though. he was actually relaxed in the last battle like he was supposed to be.

i didnt like the flashbacks that much because, truthfully, they weren't that good. they had about 3 different james potters from pictures and the mirror of erised and that just really bothered me. it was still a great film though.

GO FILCH
he was so funny in this one and GOF
white_bumblebee
oooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee i rather liked this film biggrin.gif
i really enjoyed it, although it is very different from the previous films. things are getting serious now! but i loved it nonetheless!
Gambon's acting of DD has improved alot i feel, he is acting much more likeable than before.
luna was miles better than i expected, she was brilliant and fantastically weird! she didnt let the book character down! biggrin.gif i love her even more now!
i liked the way harry and sirius's relationship was portrayed, they are so lovely!
i thought sirius's death could have been a bit more emotional, when i read the book, even though ive read it soo many times, i always cry, but the film didnt have as much of an effect on me, but it was still very sad of course.
sirius was good in this, really caring for harry and more like the real sirius in the books!
Kreacher was nothing short of revolting, ergh he looked gross, which is good i suppose as he is supposed to be hated.
omg, was anyone else competely freaked out about how Dudley looked? i dont think i saw any pictures before the film of what he looked like because i was completely taken aback by him, he looked so different and horrible! he looks such a chav!
umbridge was brilliant at being a cow! i love to hate her!
fred and george were awesome
there was little of lupin and hagrid unfortunately
ron was funny as ever and it was an ooh moment in the cinema when he said tosspot!
i liked the flirtiness between ron and hermione
mrs.fig was nothing like i imagined
i appreciated the showing of harry hugging mrs.weasley a few times and including the bit where she says shes practically his mother, so sweet!
i wasnt sure on the bit when harry hits lucius? with a spell and sirius says good one james, i dont know why, most people probably thought it was good and sweet, but im not sure whether i think its touching or bad? ? ?
so all in all i really loved it biggrin.gif it all went a bit quick tho, cant wait till its out to buy!
oh and i absolutely loved DD awesome magic in his duel with Lv, the ball of water was amazing biggrin.gif!!!! go DD!!!!
HarryPotterIsMint
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT
it was simply the best
i laughed, i cheered and i cried

I really would of liked it to be longer simply because i'm addicted to Harry Potter and would of loved to see more..
but it was amazing

I wished that we would of seen more of 'Snape's Worst Memory' and i wished we seen the bit with Minerva and Hagrid against the Ministry people + also i wished Sirius+Lupin were in it more as they are two of my favourites and now Sirius is gone (well maybe).

*SIGH*
but suppose Sirius isn't really dead now, how can they bring him back in the film... in the book it never mentions what colour spell hits him or the Bellatrix uses the killing curse... it just says a spell hits him in the chest!

i cried so much when he died
and when Lupin was holding Harry back

i really can't wait for the book now
+ the next two films
they will be really amazing

it was such a good film
i really can't get over it
i just came out today where i live
but i saw it today (thursday)
and i'm going to see it friday, saturday and sunday

ahhhh
it was amazing
anyone who hasn't seen it yet go see it!
whoop
fantastic film

also just to add
The trio were amazing as usual and really made the film
the weasley twins were hilarious as were ron and luna at times

Emma Watson looked beautiful as did Ginny and Cho
Harry and Ron whooo they are so HOT!

All actors were amazing and lived up to their brilliant characters :]
dead good!

x
white_bumblebee
1) lupin is part of the group of order members that collect harry from privet drive, but hes not there in the film.
2) dobby finds the RoR for harry and the DA to use in the books, not neville!
laughingirl_92
I absolutely loved the movie!! It was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really think for the amount of time the movie lasted they put a lot of things.I thought it had everything comedy, romance, and the fight.I loved the fight between Volemort and Dumbledore it was increible the ball of water and everything.WOW!I started to cry when I saw Sirius die.It was really sad.I felt bad for Ginny because you could tell she likes Harry and he was always looking at Cho.Also the kiss between Cho and Harry lasted a long time.Well, they didn't show a lot of the things, but I loved IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lauren0891
Just been to see it and I thought it was great and fantastic! But I do have a few complaints...

I agree that it was very rushed and I think that they should have made it a few minutes longer just to allow the movie to flow a bit better.

I also was annoyed that Qudditch was cut from the movie! I know it is not vital to the plot of the film but it would have made it a lot better.

I also agree that the ending was a bit of a let down. Sirius's death was good but it could have been better and there was pratically no explanation about the prophecy at all! If I hadn't read the book I would have had no idea what the deal with the prophecy is. They didn't mention that it could have been about Neville, that it was Trelawny that made the prophecy or that the prophecy was overhead and Voldemort only heard a small part of it. I think these are essential to the plot and really needed to be added in.

I thought that Snape's Worst Memory should have been made a lot longer as well and it didn't really show Harry's thoughts about his father's treatment of Snape in a big way like it was in the book.

Other than that I thought it was quite true to the book and the acting was great. I thought Umbridge was perfect for the part as was Luna. I thought it was much better than the last movie but I don't think it was the best movie. It's my second favourite book and I must say it is one of my favourite movies. I thought Dumbledore was a lot better than he was in the last two movies as well. I thought the kiss was handled well and the scenes showing Umbridge's changes to the school were good and there was some humour in the film which was good. However I do think that it would have been better if they added the St. Mungo's scene but I thought that for such a long book they did a really good job of shortening it.

I would definately recommend that you see it if you haven't! It's really good and if you were disappointed in the last one (like I was) then you won't be with this one! biggrin.gif

My first post biggrin.gif

Dumbledores Army-united07
i sorry to say... that i was disappointed. very much so. i hated how much they cut out! it was practically like half the book. they also added stuff that really didnt fit. they only think they added that i liked was when sirius called harry james. that was touching. that was one of my favorite books and my least favorite movie. it was wayyyyy to short, and a bit choppy.

i think that the cast did a good job with their characters. i think harry[dan] could have done a better job with getting emotional.

i was really upset on how they cut out the whole quidittch season with ron.
i dont like how they made sirius's departure so short.
i dont like how they end conversation between harry and dumbledore ended. if anything that they left in that movie from the book it should have been that conversation. that would have ended the movie well and somed up everything.

i'm sorry. i just got so frustrated. they left out sooooooooo much. and for one of my favorite books. i expected that the movie would have been alot better.

i dont think that david yates did a good job directing. and i'm worried about the HBP because he's directing that one too.

i was sooo stoked for that movie and i was yet sooo disappointed.
it wasnt worth that 10 dollars.

well on a happier note. dumbledore was better in this movie.
and there was great effects.

and if you havnet read the books. it might have been enjoyable for you. but the people who read, and re-read the books and know how it goes and what is supposed to be in it, will be dissapointed.
idk. i was.

=[
lumoz
-That gigantic fire snake was awesome, but Voldemort did't use it in the book, he used a real snake to attack Dumbledore.
-Dumbledore didn't use the golden statues to protect Harry.
OHyea
I loved it.

pretty simple, huh? biggrin.gif
I't was amazing, showed many emotions and did justice to the books.
i loved the lines, no cheesy ones, i just really didnt like the part where sirius dies...not a lot of people understood that and it wasnt elaborated enough.
overall, i thought it was great the DoM scene was awesome with the spellwork and daniel radcliffe's acting was SPECTACULAR and he has improved dramatically. Staunton played Umbridge extremely well and i LOVED luna, she was my favorite character in the movie! and she always had that "dreamy" characteristic that Jo described. happy.gif
the mirror was left out....what does that mean? wasn't it supposed to be a big part in the next book?
Oldman played his part marvelously and i loved when he said "NIce one, James!" that just made me feel fuzzy because i knew he was going to die. eeek.gif
and the length of the film could have been longer, i mean it was the longest of the series. I did not feel like it was choppy at all, but some of the scenes were in different order compared to the book.

well, overall, it was pretty great. I think it was the best in the movies being my least favorite book (so depressing!) and it did do the book justice in crucial points except for the end... dry.gif i wanted Harry to yell.
