Full Version: Should/will Jk Receive a Damehood from The Queen?
Veritaserum Forums > General > News Discussion > All About JK Rowling

JK Rowling has certainly turned many, many people to reading, especially a generation of children, not just in the UK but all over the world, she’s been an ambassator for the country and has surely done her part in tourism: with many people coming to see the scenes of the Harry Potter movies and the influences for the places in the books.

I think she is very deserving to be knighted as a Dame and hopefully one day, she will be.

Dame Jo Rowling has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?
( Half-Blood-Prince)
yeah i think she should be knighted other people have done alot less than her and have been knighted....ur completely right she has turn millions of people back onto reading and is a great embassator for the country..i would actually be surprised if she doesnt at some point get knighted.

I think knighting JKR would be a little premature. Unless the Queen's grand-daughters are pestering her to do so - I sense crushes for Dan and Rupert behind the princesses' motives! rolleyes.gif

I had heard that the Queen was pestered by her own children (I guess they were in their teens) about knighting the Beatles back in the '60's, or whenever they were knighted. And so, she did. Fortunately for Queen Elizabeth, the Beatles, despite their very public drug abuse, proved to be prolific in the music industry, and worthy of their knighthood(?).

But, seriously, I do think that knighting JKR is a bit premature. JKR will have to write another book or two that become best sellers, or prove herself to be a true philanthropist.

Just as a point of fact, only Paul McCartney is a Knight and despite anything the Queens' children may have said it didn't occur until 1998.

I think JK will recieve a Damehood from her maj at some point. This year maybe next year. Lesser people have recieved this honour. I think there is a way to recommend someone for this...making a recommendation to the house of commons or Clarence House or something. I'm not sure but I'll find out. It is not personally up to the Queen, but her subjects!

Incedently, I am going to tweak the name of this thread slightly to fint with JKR's femininity biggrin.gif

Edit: Here is an explaination of how to get a Knighthood, I was right. Anyone from the pulic can nominate somene for this honour so I say we get nominating!!

Oh yeah she defiently deserves a knighthood as a dame. Yeah like was said she has changed and shaped a whole new generation of kids into reading and becoming imaginatice. I just can't imagine life without Harry Potter it just shows how myuch of an achievement she has made. Wel ldone J.K and i hope it comes really soon. biggrin.gif
And not to foget she must have gone over alot of stress the past 17 years getting all of the books done for us lot. So that adds to the reason why she should become a dame.

hpangel94
Oh of course! She definately should! She has shaped an entire generation's minds, she has turned many kids to reading. Her books changed my life. Now, if I'm every bored or upset I pick up a Harry Potter book and any pain I feel just goes away! I think something like that definatley deserves a Damehood!

All 4 of the Beatles were honored as "Members of British Empire" (MBE) in 1965. John Lennon renounced/returned his MBE as a protest in 1969.

Paul McCarney was knighted in March of 1997 while George Harison was given knighthood posthumously. It appears that John and Ringo are the two Beatles that were not knighted.

I googled all this (various sources) as I don't follow who all the Queen grants titles to.

Maybe this title should be given only after the individual has gone through a stringent process, sort of like the Catholic Church's process of becoming a Saint. Otherwise, too many people - deserving or not - end up with the title. It is no wonder that many have refused to be knighted.

I don't remember George Harrison ever recieving the award. I even rang my sister who was a huge Beatles fan anbd she doesn't recall that happening. Still who knows.

There are a few who have refused, quite a lot actually, but there is usually some political reason behind it.

The point is, as a British Citizen, I can nominate anyone who I believe has made a difference to society, and I believe that JKR is as good a person to nominate for the award.

Just an FYI: here is the link where I got the information on George being knighted.

She has bought happyness into millions if not billions of homes. She has revolutionized reading throughout the world. She does deservce damehood IMO.
LunaMoon
I would really like it if she became a Dame, it would be really cool, but people might be a little snobby about it, liek "What's she ever done?"
etphonehome
So, Jo didn't get the honour in this years list but a few Hp actors did.

Julie Walters (Molly Weasley)has been awarded a CBE

Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon) an OBE

Leslie Phillips(Voice of the sorting hat) also an OBE

Congratulations to them all!

NB...All hope is not yet lost, another british author of childrens books was made a dame...Jacqueline Wilson, so there still hope for another year!

I think JK Rowling deserves it, she created a whole new fantasy world for kids and adults alike to get lost in, and got an uncountable number of people interested in reading for the first time. HP has become more than a simple book series to so many people.
C.P
if anyone deserves it JKR does..she has worked so hard to get to where she is today and she has turned a whole new generation to reading and a few of the older generation aswell smile.gif not only should she be knighted for this but she also does so much charity work..and a few people have been knighted for their charity work alone..i say we nominate Jo
jelly_amulet
Well, I definitely think she should. For goodness sakes, she should be Queen! Has the Queen devoted ten years of her life to made up fictional characters? No! Has the Queen spent years of her life caring for her kids while going through a financial depression? No!

J.K. Rowling is richer than the Queen!

Besides, it is a right.

Well, not really, but she deserves it! tongue.gif
Dumbledore's Widow
No. I don't think she should. She still needs to prove that she isn't just a one hit wonder. I'm sure that there are plenty of other writers who are much more prolific than she is and who have been waiting in the wings, so to speak, for Damehood. There are also other far more talented writers, poets, actors (stage and screen), scientists, etc. The Queen shouldn't hand out the title so freely, otherwise, the title loses it's importance and significance. Besides, as the cliche goes, good things come to those that wait.
muggleview
Bearing any faux-pas against the Queen, Jo Rowling will one day receive Damehood. It may not be from the Queen, but from King William, who might have enjoyed her books. Someone writing at least 7 worldwide bestselling books in a row won't go unnoticed.

Excuse my several months absence to come back ranting, and at the risk of sounding like one of the Olsen twins, but OMG, I've *so* got to get this off my chest...

A damehood? After what she's done today? I sincerely hope not. £1 million donation to the Labour party? What on earth is that woman smoking? So she's condoning the war in Iraq, condoning that the soldiers are coming back from there and have to take out life insurances because they can't survive on the benefits that this government would rather give to illegal immigrants and fat, lazy trough-snufflers who can't be bothered to go out and get a job, condoning the ridiculous level of taxation that the ordinary, everyday people of this country who aren't on the Sunday Times rich list have to pay...and the reason for this? Because she approves of Labour's record of improving child poverty. Has she totally lost touch with reality? How is Labour helping improve child poverty, exactly? When people are struggling to make ends meet, can't feed their families, can't afford to put petrol in their car, can't afford to buy their kids clothes...how on earth are "poor and vulnerable" people benefiting from Labour's current policies? She has absolutely no bleeping idea what the average family in this country is going through right now.

Grrrr...."Gordon Brown has consistently prioritised and introduced measures that will save as many children as possible from a life lacking in opportunity or choice." Really. Yeah, right...well, I'm in £15,000 worth of student debt with a degree that has not helped me get a job that I actually wanted because the competition for them is so intense because of the "priority" this government has of statistics over quality of education has resulted in thousands of people coming out of university with qualifications that are virtually useless. Never mind the legions of kids coming out of school with 20 A grade GCSE's who can't spell properly, compose a sentence, or even recite their times tables.

I had very little respect for the woman before, especially since her rather ascerbic comments to H/Hr shippers (yeah, I have a very long memory, and I hold grudges), but this just about takes the biscuit.

Ms. Rowling - if I could take back all those Harry Potter books I bought that have put you in the position to be able to throw your money around on one of the stupidest and ill-conceived causes I have come across since London's bid for the 2012 Olympics, I would. I feel dirty that my hard earned cash that has contributed to your wealth has been used in such a way.

I really need to go scrub myself in bleach right now...
etphonehome
I didn't know that! What on earth is she playing at. The Labour party need kicking out not supporting. Thanks JKR, now I know where all that money I spent on books has gone...helping my mortgage go up, the price of petrol go through the roof and keeping my kids on the unemployment line!

Louise, great to see you post again!

What did she say??? ohmy.gif I tried looking for it, but I haven't found anything...

On the current topic, well, I think that if you really like the books, you shouldn't regret buying them. Everyone has some kind of lack of discernment is some areas of life, and people can't always judge correctly. I mean I agree with the fact that a person who always supports such noble and charitative causes, and, well, created a whole world with the main themes of noblety and values shouldn't chip in politics. Not that politics is something entirely different, but it's much more complex than that- one party's good the other's bad? huh.gif
It's true that you can reward a person who did something good, even if in other things he/she isn't exactly moral or polite, but with parties and especially, being a celebrity, rewarding them is different I think. It would mean the person agrees with most things they do in politics. I think their personal vote is just enough to show support.

About Rowling and damehood, I think what she does is very impressive and unique, but it would be too soon... Let her show that she can grow and perfect her amazing abilities more.
harryjpotter
She should receive the highest honours available! She has done so much to help good causes, she has inspired new generations of reading and has given so much to people like me who needed the magic and inspiration of the books.
