Harry's. Because I was sure that his was going to die. Especially, after he went into the forest. My second would be Hermione. Being Muggle born and all. The plot in DH made me more convinced of her fate.
On both accounts I am glad that I was wrong, because I wanted them to live.

I told myself over and over again that Harry was going to live. But deep down I had this sinking feeling that he was going to die. Everything seemed to point towards it. And that's what everyone was saying...it was bad. So, I was shocked and really excited to see him pull through.
After him...I was sorta surprised that Draco Malfoy made it all the way. I'm glad he did though.

I was very very shocked that Ron, Hermione and Harry survived... I wasn't wanting them to but all the hype about people dying just got me to thinking it was going to be one of them and then with JK saying the only way to end it would be to kill him...

To me the biggest shock of all was that Hagrid survived. I thought for sure he would die and even when he had been taken prisoner, not killed, i still thought there was a chance. but Hagrid lived and i guess that's good. I like Hagrid I just thought he would have died and i think it would have made more sense to kill him then some of the ones that idn't make it. I understand many of the deaths and even predicted Dobby's but i really don't think Lupin and Tonks deserved to die, nor Fred for the Matter. I dont think the Parallel between Harry and Teddy is a good enough reason to kill off his parents. There are No reasons at all for them to die.
Overall I'm really Surprised Hagrid didn't die, i thought for sure he was a goner.

I share the suprise that all the three main characters survived, although I suppose if one had died it would have caused too much grief on the other two, echoed by Tonks and Lupin both dying, if one of those two had survived then it would have been a pointless, sad existance.
Other than that, Lucius Malfoy, as far as I can recall his survival or death was not mentioned, I was sure a duel between him and Harry would have come about at some point.

I'm almost positive that Lucius was at the little celebration after the battle with Narcissa and Draco. There was something about the them wondering whether or not they should be there or not. IMO they should have been there for if not for Narcissa Harry would have never survived.

Honestly I was surprised that someone from the trio didn't die. Some people who claimed to have read the book told me one of the trio would die.I also thoiught that Hagrid would die saving Harry.I am soooooo glad that none of this was actually true.

I am most shocked that Hagrid survived. If I didn't think that George was the character who got a reprieve, I'd say that Hagrid was supposed to die.
Everyone who has been any sort of significant guiding influence on Harry dies. His parents (who would have been), Sirius, Dumbledore, Lupin, Snape... Hagrid was a bit of a comical influence - although I guess it could be argued that he was childlike and maybe that's why he survived.
I'm a bit surprised that Draco made it; I'd seen his rebellion as being a bit more active and that he might have died in a fight attempting to protect *gasp* Hermione.
I knew, somehow, that both Ron & Hermione would be safe, but I really thought that Harry might die in the killing of Voldemort. I knew he'd never be able to successfully cast "Avada Kedavra", so I thought it would happen in some sort of "through the veil" sort of thing...

I was pleasently surprised that Harry didn't die. Although I really thought he would. I thought Harry was a horcrux and he would kill himself and bring Voldy down with him. But I was wrong. I was more surprised with who died than who lived.

I was also sure that Harry would die but I'm so happy that he didn't because when he "did" sort of "die" in the book, I wanted to throw it out the window. haha. So needless to say, I'm glad but slightly shocked that Harry is still alive.
I also thought that either Ron or Hermione would die. I wasn't expecting both of them to live. But once again, I'm pleasantly surprised.

I was definitely surprised (and relieved) that Hagrid survived. It was really a shock. I mean, the Chapter's title was Fallen Warrior, so I thought maybe it was him.
Also, Harry's survival was a bit too melodramatic. Not that I am complaining, but how did he survive is beyond me...
Okay, so along with deaths, there were these pleasant surprises

Hagrid: I truely believed he was a dead man walking when I bought the book. I had made my peace with that, and was prepared to accept it. I guess I'm happy that it happen, becuase I genuninely like Hagrid, but I think Dolby took his place, and I am sad about that.

i expected a number of people to die actually:
Harry - now JKR is going to be pestered to write more books, and although i'd love her to write another one, i thought she would kill Harry off to avoid it all.
Hermione/Ron - if Harry didn't die, i was sure either Ron or Hermione would be murdered by Voldemort. I'm so glad they weren't killed, but i thought Voldemort would pull another 'Sirius' - luring one of his best friends somewhere in order to get to Harry. I also though that because of the muggle born theme, Hermione would be a main target for this, and when Bella was torturing Hermione, i was sure she would kill her!
Hagrid & Mr Weasley - After Hagrid went to the mountains to see the giants, i though he was going to die in the 5th book, but when he didn't, i was sure he would die in the 6th or 7th. I was quite shocked by this. The same went for Mr W. When he was attacked by Nagini, i thought this meant he was a target for death sometime.
Mr. Ollivander - When he was captured in the 6th book, i never expected to see him alive in the 7th book, therefore i was quite surprised to find him in the Malfoy's cellar!

I thought Percy was doomed after he reconciled with the Weasleys. But it seems Fred took his place
I am positive that Hagrid was the character that got the reprieve. After he was dragged away by the spiders but it seems JK changed her mind. Hagrids death would have needed much more space than any of the other deaths in the book (bar lupin and tonks they definately needed more space) Hagrid was the one Harry knew longest and cared for the most after all and one of the first wizards we meet in the series.

I was also surprised, but very happy, that no one from the trio had died. I was hoping for a "Happily ever after" ending, but was not expecting it at all. I just felt like that would be the easiest way to finish the series, knowing "All was well..." instead of something sad.
I was also surprised that Hagrid had survived because, as already mentioned, he was an adult who was close to Harry. I actually read up to the "Fallen Warrior" chapter, then took a break, sort of preparing myself to sit back down and read about how Hagrid fell to his death protecting Harry. I was surprised to find out that Hagrid was alive and Moody was the Fallen Warrior.
Sorry to add another one on, but I was just thinking to myself, what about the Malfoys? I was really surprised that all three of them survived considering all the people that were upset with them, on both sides of the war. Voldemort wanted to punish the family, they had upset the Weasley's, Harry, and Hermione, among others, many, many times, and still they made it through. I thought for sure that one of the Malfoys were going to die somehow, either in the final battle or somehow showing remorse and trying to save Harry.
We have all been focusing, naturally, on the "good" characters in the story so I didn't even think of the Malfoys at first. I thought for sure that at least one of them would not have made it through...

I was at first surprised that Harry, Ron hermione and Ginny survived, I thought that one of them died in the attempt to shield someone from a death eater's (or Voldie's) spell.
Yet it still is a book which requires a happy end, therefore none of the mentioned above could have died.
I never really thought about Hagrid being killed, because very few charcaters would have been able to kill him, maybe only the giants and Voldemort himself.

Honestly, I was shocked that all of the Malfoys made it through. I thought for sure that Draco was a dead duck.
As for Hagrid, I thought he would die. I just had a feeling he would and when i read that part about the spiders i thought he was a gonner for sure.
I thought that Percy would be the one to die. I thought he would die in a redeeming matter, like for one of his brothers or something. I did think he would come to his senses but I thought he would be the one to bite the dust.

I am very very surprised (and delighted) that Hagrid survived Book 7. Multiple times, and most likely purposely, JKR had me thinking Hagrid was dead. I was almost positive (and dismayed) with the thought that Hagrid would die in Book 7 because he is so fiercely loving and loyal to Harry, and that he is one of Harry's last really close adult figures. I am glad I was wrong and shocked about Hagrid's survival... and I am tickled pink to hear he is still Gamekeeper at the place he loves most.

Hmm... I had four characters down for the chop that subsequently made it:
Harry
Draco
Narcissa
Umbridge
I was fearful that Ginny was going to die, but I think it was always forgone that Ron, Hermione and Hagrid were going to survive because JKR simply loves them too much to kill them off.

In my opinion, it was Lucious Malfoy's survival. Although they were using his home and everything, I was surprised Voldemort didn't just kill him for all the failures he's been through. From the diary to the prophecy, etc. it all just seemed like Voldemort to kill someone like that, especially after hearing about those who have served under Voldemort that have died for a lot less.
I also agree that it was kind of shocking that Hagrid didn't die, what with being caught and everything in the end.
Among others.

Harry and Hagrid's non-existant deaths shocked me the most. Okay well Harry did die but came back to life but its not the same thing as just being dead.

Hagrid, there was one point I thought Hagrid was going to go and in the moment I was worried but also thought Jo might kill him off. Luckily both lived but then the death toll for everyone else....

I was surprised that the trio came out of it all alive and had their happy endings. I was pretty sure that one of them was going to die and each time they came close to it I thought "here goes one of them now", but it never happened. I don't know whether I should be disappointed about it though....
I was also surprised that so many Weasley's came out of it alive. I had a good feeling that Ron or Ginny were going to have their dramatic deaths written in somewhere, but once again, nope. It might seem rather cruel, but I actually sort of wish that bigger characters died besides just Voldemort. I was hoping for someone's detah to turn mountains upside but it never came. It surprised me.

Like everyone, I was surprised that the trio made it. I mean, pleasently so, but i expected one of them to die (mainly ron).
I don't want them to die but I thought they got off too easily in the end. If it is a war and people die, then those closest to harry are expected to die.
I don't want to sound like a jerk like I wanted one of them to die because I don't, I was just...I dunno...kind of shocked at their happily ever after. i expected some really giant death that would rock me to the core like harry or ron.

Hermione did have me worried a few times throughout the book. It had me holding my breath. The scene in Malfoy's Manor especially had me worried because they had been separated. I was hoping that Dobby would not have just apparated with them, leaving Hermione. No way would Harry and Ron leave her behind. I was holding my breath for her and was glad to see that she made it through.

I was extremely disappointed to see that all three main characters stayed intact throughtout the whole book series. Harry, Ron, nor Hermoine died and I was hoping that at least two if not all three would die.
I wanted Harry to die most, because I felt the series really wouldn't have been complete without the main character dieing. Especially how all the readers were led on of how if Voldemort died, than Harry would have to too.
I think JKR should have at least made it, so that since Voldemort died, Harry should have gone with him.

Jul 26 2007, 03:44 AM
But Harry did die, and it was Voldemort's selfishness that brought him back. Most people who supported the Harry is a Horcrux theory thought that Harry would die. Everyone who didn't support the theory simply refused to believe it because they wanted Harry to live. I think it was very clever writing that was able to allow both theories to come into play. I for one thought Harry was dead once I read the Prince's Tale and heard Dumbedore telling Snape that Harry was a Horcrux and had to die. I said, "Oh no" out loud and was scared to read on. Needless to say, JKR did a nice job fooling me and many other readers (so I've read in other forums) into believing that Harry was to be sacrificed.
Lets remember that this is children's book and not everyone had to die. Lets be realistic, this is Harry Potter we are talking about, the Boy Who Lived, and who continues to live. He couldn't die after never having a real family. I think it is important that people read that, after all of his sacrifices and everything he had to endure, he was able to go on and live a normal life and start a family of his own.

I was personally most suprised that Mr. Weasley or Hagrid didn't die. There were the ones who I thought were going to bit it. JKR just announced the it was Mr. Weasley who did get the reprieve and I am glad he did but I for sure thought he was a goner. I also thought HAgrid was going to die before the book came out and also after I started reading there were about 3 times I thought Hagrid died and was already bawling before the next paragraph when you realize he is alive.
I am very glad all the trio made it through I didn't think one of them were going to die but I thought if it were to happen it would be Ron. I just had a feeling a Weasley had to die. But so Happy he didn't.

I was really surprised that Hagrid and the trio lived. Before i read the final book i was so sure that Hermione would get killed. I don't know why though. Maybe because she Muggle born? Hagrid i thought wouldn't stand a chance if he came up against a whole group of Death Eaters. Even though his giant skin would have been a help, he wouldn't have lasted very long after that. Another one was that the Draco and Lucius lived. I was sure that Voldemort would have killed Draco and that a member of the Order would have finished off his father.

I was sure that either Ron or Ginny would have to die... mainly because i didnt think that it would be plausible that during a time of war the trio plus Ginny would all survive (plus one of the Weasleys had to die but I've thought that was coming since like GoF). I was leaning towards Ginny because I didnt think that JKR would actually sacrafice one of the trio... but if she did i was sure it would be Ron. I was shocked that all four of them managed to make it (not to mention all the people who died that i didnt think would but this isnt the place for that)... i guess i was wrong

I thought Hagrid was a goner... JKR seems to like killing off people who are close to Harry so I thought it was inevitable that he would die. But I was wrong

Like everyone else, I was surprised when Hagrid survived, especially as he almost died twice. I was honestly crying both times, since it didn't seem fair for Harry to lose someone else who cared for him so much. I'm also surprised that neither Lucius or Draco died either, since they both had lost favor with Voldemort so badly.

There were a few times in the book where i was sure Hermione was about to die. I'm so glad she didn't, but i really thought she was going to. also, i thought hagrid was dead when they fell off the motorbike! i was thoroughly convinced that he was dead or going to die. i love hagrid and im so glad he didnt die, but i thought he was going to. finally, when neville killed nagini, i thought voldemort was probably going to kill him right there, but he didnt. i was amazed. people that actually died i never imagined would die. i wish fred didnt die, he was one of my favorite characters. oh well. :'(

I was convinced that Draco and his family were going to be killed. After Voldemort was killed and they just sat there with their family and nobody paying attention to them, I was angry. They had done such awful stuff and they just got off free? Meanwhile, innocent people like Fred, Tonks, Lupin, and Colin Creevey were being killed. I think that is wrong. So definitely the Malfoy's shocked me the most. I also thought that Hagrid was going to die but I was glad that he didn't!!

I, too, was surprised that Hagrid did not die. I'm sort of disappointed, though, and I'm not quite sure why. Maybe I was just so sure that he was going to die that when he didn't, I was kind of let down.
I was also surprised that George survived. I had a theory that since Fabian and Gideon Prewett died, and Fred and George had the same initials, that they would both die. It's really sad though to see George still alive without his sidekick, I kind of wish George would have died, too.
The last group I was really shocked to see live were the Malfoys, but I'm glad that they lived. I think Lucius got into the whole Death Eater thing, looking for power and stuff, but then realized he was in way over his head and couldn't back out. I really think they're changed for good, and they'll think twice next time.

I thought like Daniel radcliffe that harry was going to survive but pay some awful price which i saw as either Hermione, Ron or Ginny dying. But i did not expect as many deaths as there was so mayve that many people dying was the price to pay for keeping hermione and ron and ginny. Cant wait to see it on the big screen. It will be an absolute breath taking performance i think. cant wait to see how they adapt it!

I was (postively) surprised that Harry lived. I did want him to live but the whole story seemed to be drifting towards his sacrifice "for the greater good" as Dumbledore would say.
I was relieved to see he survived at the end!! Was good to see a happy-end epilogue.
I didn't expect Ron or Hermione to die but I did expect some of the members of the Order to die in battle. Mad-Eye seemed like an obvious choice but I didn't expect (maybe didn't want would be a better term) Lupin and Tonks to die, especially without really knowing what happened to them...one moment they were there...the next one all we know is that they are dead!!
Probability-wise a Weasley had to die. I though Mr. Weasley could die, but we now know he got a reprieve in book 5 so that kind of answers that point. I hoped that Ginny would not die trying to protect Harry (that would have been very like her!!) so that left us Charlie, Bill, Percy and Fred and George. Charlie hadn't appeared that much in the books and Bill had already had his share in Book 6 so it was all down to Percey and the twins. George loss an ear in the process so it was then down to Percey and Fred...and well we all know what happens (one of the saddest deaths in the books!!).
I was on the other hand extremely surprised that McGonagall and especialy Hagrid survived. I thought that if Jo wanted to kill one of the main characters she was more likley to kill Hagrid than Ron and Hermione, and that it would be an equally huge blow to Harry. Like Harry he seemed to be destined to death at the end of the book...but he also escaped!! And McGonagall seemed to me also a likely choice given her boldness and willingness to protect all students.
Finally, although I did expect Bellatrix and Snape to die I was very surprised the way it happened. Mrs. Weasley defeating Bellatrix?!?! I was sure that Neville was a sure lock for that battle!! And I though Snape would kind of be more interactive, i.e. die by trying to protect Harry or something like that.
By all accounts although I'm very sad by Fred, Lupin and Tonks deaths I think the end result given what could have been was quite positive!! So thanks for that also Jo!!

And dracos survival was a bit of a shock because after nearly killing dumbledore in book six, and then at the beginning of deathly hallows when hes with voldermort and all that. Voldemort may have let Draco live because he wanted leverage on Narcissa and Lucius. He probably felt that they were slipping away from him and maybe he felt needed them (Narcissa and Lucius) alive and healthy for some reason or another.

I was amazed when Harry found out he wasn't really dead. I wonder if that dying baby at King's Cross wasn't the piece of Lord Voldemort's soul that was in Harry? After reading the last half of the book twice, I'm thinking it was.
