I'm simply curious to see what fanfiction authors are going to do now. I saw this question on other forums and wanted to see the response here on Veritaserum.
A lot has been uncovered on James, Lily, Snape, and Regulus. Even a little on Sirius. Are you going to try and put new information into your story with the warning of spoilers? Or are you going to continue as if Deathly Hallows never came out?
Same with present day characters. What's going to happen now? Are you going to even continue writing?

Ooooo I was JUST going to start a thread on this!
For me, all fan fiction must now be AU. I am a Severus/Hermione shipper to the bitter end, and refuse to relinquish my fetish for the relationship.
As far as how to make it work, either it must be AU (which I have always previously loathed), or someone would have to do something brilliant like... oh, I dunno... say Severus didn't really die (which isn't really that hard to contrive), and make Hermione either a twin (which would be so FANTASTIC to read! Someone please run with that!), or perhaps fall back on the ever-popular time turner, and spin from that. Perhaps she went back into the past, and her former self saw her, and it created a split in the time line, rendering two Hermiones?
Oooh... I really like that idea... ok, who wants to run with it? Helen... Louise... David... I'm looking at you three on this one...

I haven't written any fan fiction yet, but I plan on it now that the books are finally finished. I don't think this book would change much for me. I was planning on writing about what happened during the early days of Hogwarts, perhaps even its founding. Other than finding out that Godric Gryffindor "stole" that sword, and Ravenclaw's relationship with her daughter, I don't think this book would be much help. Did I forget anything?

Spoilers ahead.
Yes this definitley will put a strain on some fics I've been working on. S'a good thing I never put them up as WIPs eh?
I think Lily/Snape relationship will be hard to incorporate, it's something I blindly ignored as I wrote anything Lily/James.
Seeing Sirius's room kind of added depth to his character, I think that passage will contribute to much needed information on how to mold his character in my fics.
As for Fred's you-know-what-happened- I think it's going to hurt my future fics because I always rely on them for humor when I write a Weasley centered fic. Now it's not so humorous.

I'm not going to change my fan fic at all. I've already practically finished writing it so I'm going to finish with it, without changing a thing. I suppose this might make it more "unique" in a sense.
Once I'm finished with my fic, however, I might right another one that corresponds with the actual facts from the Deathly Hallows.

I think I'll find it very hard to ignore the whole book. There's a much better understanding now of prof. Dumbledore, Harry's parents, Sirius, Severus Snape, etc. It's hard not to put in little hints, because you won't know those are hints you're giving unless you're really searching for it.
I guess I'd like to write more fanfics. I'm not very sure if they'll be read anyway - my last one wasn't

Three words: Third generation Fics. Do I really need to say more? The Marauders were the first generation, the trio was the second and their children was the third. Even though I still enjoy Marauder Fan Fiction, and the Deathly Hallows revealed a lot of information that would help - including Lily and Severus's friendship!
By the way, I had a vision of a giant ship sailing the Atlantic Ocean last night, and it was called RosieXScorpius!

Oh I am very excited to use the new information of Dumbledore's past to make some really great fan fiction. I had always been afraid to show Dumbledore doing anything less than Good because I feared it may have strayed too far from his character... however, my desire to write such things seems to have paid off and I was right in thinking that Dumbledore has a less than perfect past.
I also am eager to include bits about the Hallows, perhaps some Horcruxes, and one of my new favorite characters, Gellert Grindelwald.

Albus, you are after all Albus, so I'm thinking you have a really good angle into the character, you shouldn't have doubted yourself. We all have darkness in us.
I think I'm going to have to go home and do a little rewriting, but not much - I guess I kind of knew there were things that I didn't know, so i only wrote according to the things that I did know, and a couple of them were wrongly interpreted, but nonetheless . . . it felt good to be right about the scantily clad girls on Sirius' bedroom walls.

Yeah, I suppose I was afraid to tarnish Dumbledore's apparance, so I tried to stray away from that. I should have went with it, because at a time, I had wanted to write that Albus and Grindelwald (now known as Gellert) were friends... imagine if I did, how close I would have been!!
I also wanted to show a darker, more plagued Dumbledore in his youth.. now that I have canon to support this, I may do just that.

Deely Heely showed me that the working ship between DD & Snape was far worse than I imagined. I knew it had to be messy but not that bad. I saw DD as this dreadful boss well past his retirement pressing outdated modes. Now post-book, DD’s really is an abusive person. No wonder Fudge was so wary of him!
I will keep my Snape as a writer of romance novels intact!

It won't change any key point in the story, but it does change the story of Severus as a child, now that I know that his parents didn't go as far as attempting to kill each other when he was very young. Hmmm... that could still have been the case...
It won't change my story of Elenor or her friends in any way. The HP characters in my fanfic remain the same.
However, there is one great scene that I had planned near the end of my fanfic that I now have to scrap. I can tell you about it now, because it isn't going to happen any more :
It is late 1999, more than a year after the end of the second war, and Harry is one of Elenor's Auror students in his first year. One day, Snape turns up and corners Elenor. Now picture the following exchange...
'Why, good morning, Severus,' Elenor said, slightly taken aback at his sudden appearance by her classroom blocking the way. 'What brings you here? Anything I can do for you?'
'I would like to have a word with Harry Potter.'
'Why, if I may ask?'
'You may, but it is none of your business. It's personal.'
'Would this have anything to do with what happened last year, by any chance?' Elenor asked suspiciously. 'Because if it has, it must wait. He is busy right now. As you know --'
'You underestimate Mr Potter,' Snape interjected. 'Evidently, you do not know him as well as I do. He will want to see me. In fact, he won't take it too kindly if you interfere.'
'You are being selfish, Severus. I won't have you raking up old sores and opening old wounds. Why now? Can't you give it a rest and let him be?'
'I can assure you, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't important.'
'Right. And he will want to see you,' Elenor said sarcastically.
'Yes, he will,' affirmed Snape. 'Now, if I may --' He stepped forward but Elenor blocked the door.
'I will tell him you're here,' she said. 'If, and only IF he truly wants to see you, 'I'll allow it.' She pointed down the hall. 'You can wait in my office. Will you promise me to go away if he refuses to see you?'
'I will. He won't refuse, you know.'
'My office, Severus,' Elenor said when he wouldn't move away from the door. 'Over there.'
He sighed. 'Very well. I trust you'll see to it right away, I'm not in the habit of being kept waiting --'
Elenor watched him move away from the door and out of sight of anyone inside before opening it.
The story continued with Harry and Snape meeting in Elenor's office, of course, and several interesting things following from there, none of which will be happening now because it isn't canon, more's the pity.

I'm pretty lucky because I just started a new james/lily fan fiction so I can use the new information! So it doesn't really affect me. And my other james/lily, it just happens to be January at the time - lucky for me because of Lily's birthday....so Im pretty lucky. I dont know how it will affect the rest of the fics I'll do. I might try one that is from the end of the battle to the Epilogue because JKR just told us about harry, Ron, Hermione and Luna's jobs...so we have plenty of stuff to come up with on our own!

Hmm, good topic. I posted this on another site, and it's pretty much what I think...
'I actually have a book 7 fiction! Lol. I'm going to ignore book 7 for this story. But yeah, right now, I'm at the final Horcrux, and I have had the final battle planned for months... And it does have resemblence, a bit, to DH. But I've had it planned for a few months, so, I'll just let readers know that for the upcoming Horcruxes, and, Final Battle, was all planned before DH, and I have an AU waring anyway... So I won't be using canon information. That can be for future stories! If it does have any parallels, they're unintentional...
As for any future stories that I don't want to follow canon, I'll just put up an AU warning! Lol. I don't care all to much if my stories don't follow canon. Maybe one day I'll have a huge urge to write a Fred and George story, and I'll just use an AU sign, and pretend Fred's alive. It certianly works for me! I've read plenty of non-canon AU stories that have Sirius, even James and Lily alive! I love those, so I should be fine. The only real trouble I would've had would if Jo killed Harry, Ginny, Ron or Hermione off, but she didn't!! Yay!!
That's me, if something is canon, like a character death, that I don't like, it'll be AU. I love canon, but sometimes, it doesn't work with my story. I'd just use and AU sign...
Sorry if I was repetitive, I tend to be...

But I'm fine with AU, sometimes to put in new canon information is a hassle for me. '
Yep, thats me! I love AU stories, by the way. I like Remus, Tonks, and Fred, so for all I know, they're living in my story!

I think I'll reply to my own topic...
The days following the release of Deathly Hallows were different. I couldn't stand fanfiction for a while. I didn't actually start writing again until yesterday. The thing is, that I really really like my stories to be as cannon as possible.
My Lily and James story is nearly over, and I wanted to have mentioned the friendship between Lily and Snape. I never would make a romance out of the two of them, but I wanted to talk about it a bit. I can't really now, just because their friendship deteriorated during their fifth year.
Deathly Hallows also gave us a little more background on Sirius, given we saw what was in his room. I would have liked to talk about his rebellion.
Anywho, over the last two days, I've just about exploded from the amount of plot ideas that have gone through my mind. I want to write about Regulus, since we learned quite a bit on him, Draco Malfoy and his wife, how they came to be, Teddy Lupin and what he was...and also Scorpio Malfoy. This is different because I've never wanted to touch the trio era or whatever comes next. It doesn't really matter though, because I'm not starting any more fanfictions. I'll just have to hope that someone writes a good story with less common characters.
So...I can't really do much with my Lily & James story. I could probably put a bit in there. The thing that really bummed me out was seeing the night they died in Deathly Hallows. I was looking forward to writing that and making my own scene out of it. But now we know what really happened...so it's not going to be as cool. I have a little comfort with the fact that in Deathly Hallows it's from Voldemort's point of view. When I write it, I'll do it from James and/or Lily's point of view.
Deception is only in about three chapters, so that still gives me plenty of time to add spoilers. It'll be fun.
Good luck to anyone starting new Fan Fictions.

Oh man, my fan fic is so AU now it's driving me crazy! Normally I can't stand AUs but I really don't plan on rewriting it or stopping so I guess I'll have to deal.
I'm deffinitely excited about writing another one though after Deathly Hallows so that should be good.
There's so much more new information now it'll be hard for me to forget about it and continue writing my fic without DH spoilers.

Haha, i had a DH story planned, but now all my ideas are completly ... wrong. I mean, my story included the sword being a horcrux, the wedding going without a hitch, Harry trying to be optomistic, Ron trying not to become so ... depressed, and Hermione just poured over books.
As you can see, mines pretty AU, so i don't think i'll write it. Oh well, any stories i write now will take palce between final battle and epilogue.

PS. AU stands for Alternate Universe. Where the HP world is completly different to canon, EG. The marauders are girls, harry has a twin ... you get the picture.

Okay, 1, what is AU?
And, 2, it depends on what story I am writing. I am currently writing a fan fic about the locket Horcrux but that was before I read DH. Maybe I will write one about Lilly, James and Albus Potter at Hogwarts or something like that.

As for me, it'll be BERY hard not to include DE into my fanfics. Of course, there will be some stuff that I'm going to put in my fanfics that are in the book, but I was already planning on doing things, so only people who've really read DE will know. Yet, my story's so AU, that I highly doubt people will be looking for stuff like that!

I think now that HPDH is out and we know what happens with Voldemort, it leaves it wide open for the imagination to write what happens after Voldemort is gone. What do they all do now? I think it leaves things open to write about how it could have happened instead of how it did happen. I think it is left wide open for fan fics.

I think despite her best efforts, JK left a lot of openings for stories to be written. I know there are a lot ways you can go from the end of the epilogue, but she also left it open to write stories about Lily and James from the past. I would like to see some fics about them and dig deeper into their story. I think she also left it open for fics about Snape and Dumbledore's pasts. There is more that can be written about Malfoy as well. I would love to see where the imagination can take these characters.
