NOTE: If this Topic is inappropriately added please lock it/ delete it. I'm sorry if it is. I searched other topics and the only thing i found close to this was the Topic entitled the Weasley's, which is a very good topic, but i thought I'd add a topic devoted solely to the duel between Mrs Weasley and Bellatrix.
Ok so to start it off I really hope you all know which Duel I'm talking about here. I of course mean the one Between Molly Weasley and Bellatrix Lestrangein the last chapter of the book. The one full of rage, profanity, passion, and most of all duelling skill. What do you think about it? Are you surprised? Are you offended at the language? Pity for Neville? Anything just let me know what you think of the duel and the result.
I have already posted on another page how i feel about the duel and outcome but i will reiterate here.
Many people think that it should not have been Mrs. Weasley who killed Bellatrix many people believe that Neville should have been the one to finish her off. I think it's good that it was Mrs. Weasley because:
Molly Weasley
- Maternal
- Caring
- "it will be a miracle if we all make it ouf this alive" OotP
-Sees her family dead as a boggart
- Values life
Bellatrix Lestrange
- no regard for family
- thoughtless murderer
- immersed in evil
- prostrates herself at Voldemort's feet
The two women are polar opposites of eachother. I guess it would have been etter revenge-wise if Neville had finished Bellatrix but I think JKR kills her with Molly to show once again how good and love triumph over evil and hate and/or power. Molly is the classic worrying, caring mother and Bellatrix the classic murdering *itch. Who better to finish off Lestrange than the person who symbolizes that which she doesn't understand and hates?
The only thing weird to me about it is that Molly used a killing curse on Bellatrix. I mean its not like she got crushed underneath something or slipped off an edge. Molly shot a killing curse at her which to me is a little out of character. Oh well i guess it just shows the wrath of a woman.
The comment made by Molly surprised me but didn't shock me or anything. And I'm glad She flew off the handle because of Ginny. I'm a big fan of Ginny and I have no problem with the way Molly reacted. If that curse had hiot Ginny... so help me.
Mod Eidt: You have been here long enough to know that cursing is not allowed. Don't do it again.

I was suprised, and thought Harry would aid her remembering Sirius, but was definately not dissapointed with the match.
I thought it slightly far fetched that Mrs. Weasley managed to overcome such a powerful death eater, although it wouldn't be hard to assume Bellatrix was worn down from her prior dueling.

An amazing, awesome battle. I did think that it was going to have to be Neville who killed her because of what she did to his parents. But as long as she died it was fine with me.

Oh my god this was one of my favorite duels of all time, even though it was short! The second I read [Mod Edited] I got so excited! I was like Yeah, Go Mrs. Weasley! I thought it made sense she went off the handle. She had just lost one of her sons, and almost lost her only daughter, if I were her I'd go off the handle too.
I think the reason Harry didn't help is, for one he was torn between the Bellatrix/Mrs. Weasley Duel, and the Voledmort/Mconagall, Kingsley, and Slughorn and he didnt want to hit any of his friends while trying to help them, and I think he was just in awe that Mrs. Weasley stepped up to duel Bellatrix.
It makes sense, though, that it was Mrs. Weasley, as XDumbledoreX said, they are two opposite woman, one good, one evil, and also they were cousins, and Sirius was also Molly's cousin, and she knew the Longbottoms as well, so she had as much right as Harry and Neville to want to avenge their loved ones' death/tortures. And, well, as I said, Ginny is Molly's only daughter and also her youngest, so I don't think she would have taken it well if Ginny had been killed.
Go Mrs. Weasley!!

True, the series has always made it a well noted fact that Ginny was her only daughter after so many sons.
The duel was well done, and I'm glad Bellatrix saw a definate end, unlike Lucuis (if my memory is right in stating he survived)

Mod NoteCursing is not permitted in any part of this site. We all know what Molly said so there is no reason to repeat it. Especially using asterisks to get around the censor. Louise has made the
Cursing Rule very clear so I suggest you read it.
If anyone else posts up what Molly said their post will be deleted without warning. You all should have read the Rules before so you should have known from the start that cursing is not allowed. If you didn't read the Rule sI suggest you do so at once.

Back on topic.
I thought that part was good. I liked that Bella was brought down but I had hoped it would be Neville to do it. I was surprised to see Molly so fired up. We;ve seen in previous books how angry she coudl get bgut I never thought she'd be the duelling type. But for the love of a child a mother can do extraordinary things. I didn't like the fact that JK wrote that she was laughing just like Sirius did when she was hit. They are nothing alike and for JK to say that was horrid.
I don't have a clear memory of the fight but I do remember certain lines. But did Molly use an Unforgiveable at all? Or did she stick to the Good Side spells? I'd assume that considering they were both fighting to kill that the curse she hit her with was the AK, unless there's another killing curse I don't know about? And to say Molly used the AK puts her in a whole knew bucket! It was fantastic! Absolutely fantastic. One of my favourite parts of the book.

Jul 26 2007, 02:10 AM
The book really doesn't say that Molly used the killing curse...it just says that her curse "hit [Bellatrix] squarely in the chest, directly over her heart." I wonder if Molly did use the killing curse? It seems out of character -- and goes against the whole idea that Molly wouldn't stoop to that level, but it was a war and Bellatrix would have killed Molly had Molly not killed her first. I was really surprised at the language she used, too...although I guess Molly was in a state of shock and grief over Fred. It was a good fight...but I think that it might have been just as good if Neville had killed her. Maybe JKR didn't have Neville kill her so that he could maintain his innocence?

I was really surprised when Mrs.Weasley came forward to fight Bella and at the same time I actually thought that it was quite good. And yeah, in the book it does say that "Molly's curse..." and I'm pretty sure that it meant Avada Kedavra. I was quite surprised and amused at the language she used. My theory, was too that Neville would kill Bella but I think that she came to fight because Ginny, her only daughter, was there fighting her...and Molly, obviously, couldn't afford losing another family member. Overall, it was simply amazing.

Yes, Molly vs. Bella was the best duel of the book. I don't believe that Molly used the killing curse, however. There are probably so many different spells she could have used. The only way to know for sure would be to ask JK Rowling herself.

[font=Verdana] I thought it was so amazing when Mrs. Weasley ran up to Bellatrix and yelled the profanity. I've always wanted Mrs. Weasley to truly show her skill and I think she finally did. I'm shocked Neville didnt kill her but I think Neville defiently had his part in the book.

I too enjoyed reading about this duel, it was very exciting!!!
We do not get much info on the curse that Mrs. Weasley used, and I do think that in most cases the killing curse would be out of character, but I am going to go back to much earlier in the story to support my belief that she did use the killing curse.
Lupin was trying to figure out how the Death Eaters knew who the real Harry Potter was when the ambushed the "Seven Harry Potters" and it was because he was using the expelliarmus curse, not anything more serious or lethal. Lupin explained to Harry that it was a war and they were aiming to kill, so that is how you need to respond and fight back. Remember that Lupin was in The Order, as was Mrs. Weasley and I feel that this was the belief of all most of The Order members.
Additionally, Bellatrix's killing curse missed Ginny by an inch so I think that is what put her over the top. Having just lost a son, she was not about to lose her only daughter, not when they were that close to the war being over.

I was really moved by the battle between Molly and Bellatrix. That line- which I am sure will be infamous- is one of the best in the entire series. Mrs. Weasley had just lost her so to these foul death eaters. She had seen Bellatrix's curse miss Ginny and she was going to pull everything out so as to not lose another family memeber that night. I was pleased that Mrs. Weasley did kill Bellatrix but I did think it was going to be Neville and maybe it could have been a different Death Eater almost killing Ginny but it worked out really well I think. I love Mrs. Weasley.

I really liked that Molly ended up battling Bellatrix. I was not surprised that she had skills as a fighter. She was in the order of the Phoenix. I always thought she was probably a good dueler.
(Didn't she duel at the MOM in OOTP? I'll have to go back and look that up.)
It would have also made sense for Neville to do it, but he had is moment of glory with the snake and that was one of the BEST moments in the series to me. I've really loved Neville all along. I think JKR wanted the other characters to all have a part in the destruction of the Horcruxes and the Death Eaters. Destroying a Horcrux was a major feat for Neville, so Molly got to do Bellatrix.

Did anyone else expect Bellatrix to win the duel? I don't remember ever reading anything about Molly having dueling skills and such... and Bellatrix seems to be quite a skilled witch.
XDumbledoreX
Jul 26 2007, 09:39 PM
Bellatrix was a skilled witch and we never did know anything about Molly's skills but maybe JKR chose this moment to reveal Molly's duelling prowess?
We do know that Molly lost family to Voldemort during the first war because DEs killed the Prewetts and she was a Prewett. Plus her son was dead and her daughter narrowly missed death so I'm sure that fired her up a lot.
Plus when they duelled it was just the two of them and you knew Molly was going to win because it would be foolish for her to die and then Bellatrix just be overcome and killed by every other person in the room.
I just like the idea of a really mad Mrs. Weasley finishing off Bellatrix. I mean right from the start it says the women were duelling to kill, how much more intense can it get?

I was actually really surprised at the skill Mrs. Weasly showed against Bellatrix. I never thought that Mrs. Weasly would be really good at dueling. I enjoyed the language she used because it was in character with her, and how she can lose her temper. I aslo liked it because Rowling showed that this is not just a children read, all ages can enjoy it. I really don't think that if Neville dueled her he would win, because Nevilles magic skills are not the best, especially to bellatrix.[size=7][font=Century Gothic]

I believe the duel between Bellatrix and Molly was one of the funniest scenes in the book. I can imagine the look on everyone's faces when it starts, but Molly is the epitome of the loving mother--willing to kill for her children. She's the fierce lioness--we just haven't seen it til now. Can you imagine how this will play out on the big screen. Harry's trying to figure out which battle to help in.....Voldemort or go help Mrs. Weasley. I think her actions speak for t hemselves. She's a very skilled witch when properly motivated.

Mrs. Weasley isnt a nice women when shes mad. Weve learned that in most of the books. with her daughter almost being killed i imagine that she had a major adrenaline rush and went a little overboard. I doubt her only purpose in the order was to clean Grimmauld place.

You know,
as I was reading that chapter and got to the famous shouted line of Mrs Weasly about her daughter, I got kinda confused - just for a second.
I really had no idea who was shouting at who and about who's daughter.
Really, had I been drawn as a cartoon at that very moment I would've had a number of questionmarks over my head
But, as I read on, I was delighted to know who it was about.
The adrenaline that went throught me while reading that part was unbelieving
I really had no idea that Molly Weasley - the soft, lovable, caring housewive - had such great power. Truly amazing.
As for the curse that killed Bellatrix - maybe Bellatrix threw a killing curse (not avada kedavra) and Molly blocked it some way so it rebounded on Bella.
Why do I think this? Well because I find it very very very hard to believe that Molly Weasley is capable of killing someone.
And everybody that keep's talking about Neville... I get why you think that he should have been the one finishing Bellatrix off, but how on earth was he supposed to be doing that.
He had never really shown exceptional duelling skills has he? If he had taken on Bellatrix at some point I am sure that he would not have survived - and that would've been a very big blow for me personally
Well, that's all
have a very good night my dears
Bye bye

I really wanted Neville to be the one to kill Bellatrix so I was mighty disappointed when Mrs Weasley did the deed. But the whole series is based on love and to some extent a parental love as well Lily Potter dying for her only son, Mrs Weasley killing Bellatrix for nearly killing her daughter. I was quite suprised Mrs Weasley managed to kill Bellatrix if Bellatrix didnt underestimate her opponent im pretty sure she could have blown Mrs Weasley away.

But isn't this somewhat appropriate? Sirius only died because he didn't take the threat of Bellatrix seriously. If he had, he wouldn't have been laughing as she shot her red curse at him, and he wouldn't have fallen through the veil.
Bellatrix, with the arrogance of the Black family, did the same thing. She underestimated Molly Weasley, didn't take her seriously as a threat, and *bam*, she died laughing at Molly, just as Sirius died laughing at her.
A lesser theme in the entire series is that everyone can be redeemed. All they have to do is learn from the mistakes of others and want to be. Sure, Bellatrix was never going to be "redeemed" in the full sense of the word, but if she'd only learned from her cousin Sirius, she probably would have won the duel with Molly rather than died.
Sirius' death was (in part) caused by his own arrogance. He probably was a duelling match for Bellatrix, but he treated it like a game. Bellatrix was definitely overmatched to Molly, but didn't learn from Sirius, and didn't take Molly seriously. It was her own arrogance that caused her to die.
(I don't think I'm reaching, either, because the way Bellatrix's death is written, JK Rowling beats the reader over the head with the similarities... Harry knows whats going to happen before it does.)

I loved that duel! I loved it when she screamed ' NOT MY DAUGHTER' ' OUT OF MY WAY' ! It showed the other side of Molly Weasley, that she isn't just the typical mum who cleans and cooks and heals people.
But I think that is what took Bellatrix of her guard. She laughed when Mrs Weasley arrived and was shocked to find that Molly could duel. It was a great match for a duel as well. The two of them couldn't be more different. Mrs Weasley is kind and caring and warm, where Bellatrix is cold and heartless. And of course Mrs Weasley won, which is how it should be, revenge for Harry and Neville, even if none of them actually harmed her.
I loved it!

To be honest, I wasn't surprised at all, seeing Mrs. Weasley holding her own against Bellatrix. I've always been under the impression that Mrs. Weasley was a very powerful witch (though we've only witnessed her magical prowess through her household activities, not exactly in a duel).
We know that Neville really shined in this book, but would he really have been able to defeat Bellatrix? He's powerful, but is he that powerful?
Also: Voldemort's reaction to Bellatrix's death was an eye popper in itself. Wow.

It was one of my favorite duel ever.
First because it links to Harry's own mother, who sacrified to try and protect him. This is a second example of what love can do, especially love for your own children. I think any parent on the forum realise he/she could do unusual things to protect his/her threatened kids.
And also because Molly using that b-word is just so contrasting with her image of polite lady. I can imagine her turning red and furious. I can't wait to see that scene in the movie!

I loved that Bella got snuffed! Unlike Narcissa, I've always hated Bellatrix with a passion. but I always thought that Neville should have killed Bella because of what she did to his parents, but I think that he wouldn't have had the nerve to kill her. Molly was already in grief because of Fred, she couldn't bear to lose another family member - meaning Giny - so she freaked out like ay mother would do.

The duel between Bella and Molly was just wow. I never expected anything like that word to come out of Mrs. Weasley's mouth. Then again, she just lost her son, and nearly lost her daughter. That would enough to make me snap any day, and I htink that's exactly what happened Mrs. Weasley snapped after Fred's death.
I snapped after Fred's death come to think of it. I forgot it was a book for a second and jumped up off my bed muttering curses at Bellatrix. Which is kind of stupid, but hey, I got really into the book!

I LOVED it -- it showed the power of a parent's love plus come on -- where do you think Jenny got all her power from (???)
I'm glad Bellatrix got the axe by Molly -- it was so fitting. I actually think that Molly had those skills all along -- why else would she be in the Order she just didn't have a need to express them.
I think Mr. W went out in the the field more for the Order because of the nature of his job with the ministry - plus he probably didn't want his wife to - just any case anything happened. Who knows.
But when Harry popped up and blocked LV -- that was the best!! It's like he was protecting his mother and in a way -- he was!

Aug 1 2007, 04:07 AM
Wow. I must be the only one who, when reading DH and came upon the duel with Bella and Molly, was not cheering. Yeah, the use of the b word was different and as a mother I can totally understand how Molly would be furious and want to defend her daughter/children...however for the last few books now, actually since the beginning of the series at least one of her children has been in danger...Ginny was almost killed, Ron was almost killed...George's ear...and then all of a sudden a spell flies near her daughter and Mrs. Weasley goes nuts? That just didn't make any sense to me. I felt that she could have battled her but not killed her...
See, I had this expectation that really left me disappointed I suppose and that is my own fault. Neville had such a vendetta against Bella that I expected him to fullfill destiny to avenge his parents, to pay her back for Bella putting the Cruciatus curse on himself even...that was Nevilles fight and in my mind had been built up that way by JKR. When Molly did the honors of killing Bella I felt cheated in a way. I don't know I just wasn't all that impressed with it...maybe the movie will be different and change my mind about the event but I doubt it.

i think it is a clash of different opposite character, one is a loving caring mother another is a psychopath murderer. Neville is not the one that duel, because he already did his job with the Nagini and revenging is to sink as low as Beatrix. I think Molly is a good choice since as i say it is a clash of character. I also think Neville main plot is the character development from a useless forgettful witless boy into a brave daring leader(he is also the commander of DA).

Just like HPFan792, I didn't expect Molly to be that good of a witch. This would have been the perfect opportunity for Rowling to have Ginny show us those strong powers that she
supposedly has. But, she didn't do that. Ginny narrowly escaped death and Harry was ready to help his
damsel in distress, but was shoved aside by ALL CAPS, Molly, the
she-bear!
In the American edition of DH, the scene where Molly screams profanity and begins to duel with Bellatrix came at the beginning of a new page. When I turned the page and read this, I thought it was quite comical. I literally laughed out loud. I'm sure this wasn't the response Rowling wanted to induce with this scene. The way Molly just shows up and begins to do battle with Bellatrix. I guess that it just goes to show that you don't mess with a mother. Molly was like a she-bear who becomes viscious when it thinks her cub is being threatened. And yeah, Molly bared her teeth and claws! Quite the adrenaline rush!

JKR haven't commented this in an inteview has she?
I'm not convinced Molly used the Avada Kedavra om Bellatrix.
First off, Molly is one of the sweetest and most caring characters in the book, secondly, have anyone else from the good side ever used the AK curse in the books before? Of course, we don't know what happened in every battle, but I don't remember them ever having used it. It would have surprised me if Molly of all people would use it so late in the book.
True, Lupin says that they have to use anything to defend themselves, and the two other unforgivable curses are often used, but never the AK.
JKR specifically write that the curse hit Bellatrix in her chest above her heart, could this be an indication trying to tell us that she just used a spell which was strong enough to kill if it hit on the right spot? It would not matter where the AK hit, seeing as it's abilities would kill the reciever anyway.
Avada Kedavra is the only killing curse, but surely other spells would be able to kill if it hurt the reciever strong enough. Many people have been injured during fights throughout the books, if someone was to be struck in the chest/stomach region by a powerfull, could it be strong enough to kill the person?
Whenever the AK has been used in the books, JKR has always told us so. Either by the pronunciation of it or the green light from the wand.
JKR write as follows:
"both women were fighting to kill."
Surely this could mean that all stakes were out and that Molly were using any means possible, but then:
"Molly's curse soared beneath Bellatrix's outstretched arm and hit her squarely in the chest, directly over her heart. Bellatrix's gloating smile froze, her eyes seemed to bulge: for the tiniest space of time she knew what had happened, and then she toppled..."
Is this not a bit out of character of the AK? I don't recall those being hit by the curse ever being aware of it, they just die and fall over. Bellatrix however, actually have time to realize what has happened and react to it.
What do you think?

Ooh, good topic! I personally think that Neville did enough showing his toughness when he killed Nagini, and it was satisfying to see Mrs. Weasley show off her tough, motherly instincts side. While I was reading, I almost laughed with satisfaction when Mrs.Weasley pushed the students aside to fight Bellatrix. It was awesome to see her finally stepping up to the place and revealing herself to be a little more than a good housewife. Also, it was funny to see her cussing when she's such a kind person.
Zeph, in my opinion, I think that she did use the Killing Curse, because after all, JK said they were, "Fighting to kill." And that "Bellatrix's gloating smiling froze...for the tiniest second space of time she knew what happened." You say that AK people are not supposed to realize they were hit, but for the "tiniest second" she knew, and I don't really think that she reacted to it, besides of falling over. True, Molly Weasley using the AK curse isn't her typical behavior, but when a war is going on, things change. People change.
It was one of my favorite sequences; the battle with Molly and Bellatrix.
